Chapter 5
As Ash and his companions don their Team Alpha uniforms and set foot in the village of Viridale, the first thing that strikes them is the stark contrast between the past and present. What was once a thriving haven of lush, ancient forests now bears the scars of relentless human progress. The air is tinged with the scent of freshly hewn wood, a poignant reminder of the ongoing agricultural expansion, logging activities, and rapid urbanization that have transformed the landscape.
As they survey the scene, Ash's expression darkens at the sight of felled trees and barren patches where verdant canopies once flourished. "There's no denying it," he mutters, his voice tinged with disappointment. "This used to be a paradise for Grass-type Pokémon... Now, it's just a shadow of what it once was."
Mark kneels down, offering a comforting hand and a gentle stream of water to the Lotad nearby. "You're right," he murmurs softly, his eyes reflecting a mix of sadness and determination. "This is simply unacceptable... Why would they destroy such beauty?"
Lillie chimes in, her voice tinged with sorrow. "It's probably quite straightforward... just look over there."
As Ash and the group turn their attention, they witness the villagers toiling in the fields, planting vegetables with forced determination. The air is heavy with a sense of discontent, evident in the villagers' weary expressions.
Their focus shifts abruptly as a commotion erupts nearby. A woman, desperation etched on her face, pleads with soldiers who are forcibly taking away a large sack of vegetables. "Please! This is all I have left!" she cries out, clinging to the soldier's leg in a desperate attempt to salvage her sustenance. However, her pleas fall on deaf ears as the soldier callously kicks her aside, callously dismissing her as an inconvenience.
On the other side of the field, Sewaddle munch on the tender leaves of the newly planted crops, unaware of the impending danger. To the group's horror, they observe some villagers applying pesticides with reckless abandon, resulting in immediate harm to the innocent Pokémon. The scene unfolds like a tragic tableau, highlighting the clash between human necessity and the natural world's vulnerability.
Ash's fists clench tightly, a visible manifestation of his frustration and sorrow at the unfolding scene. The cries of distressed Pokémon only serve to intensify the feeling of helplessness that grips them all. Among the chaos, there are individuals callously plucking leaves from Oddish, Petilil, and even Sawsbuck, disregarding their well-being entirely.
"Why would they harm them like that?" Golly's voice trembles with disbelief as he witnesses the cruelty firsthand.
Lillie steps forward, her expression grave yet determined. "I've read about this," she begins, her voice steady with knowledge gained from her studies. "Oddish's leaves are known for inducing sleepiness, Petilil's leaves possess medicinal properties, and Sawsbuck's leaves are used for making tea. These Pokémon rely on their leaves for various reasons, and stripping them away so forcefully is not only harmful but also disrupts the delicate balance of nature." Her words carry a weight of understanding, emphasizing the interconnectedness between Pokémon and their natural habitats.
"I wouldn't be surprised if they're planning to sell those leaves for profit," Minami remarks, a mixture of disappointment and resignation in her voice as she shakes her head at the greed-driven exploitation of nature.
"Look, there's smoke in the air," Golly points out, his expression troubled as they all take notice of the haze drifting through the village. Trenor's curiosity prompts him to inquire, "Where's that smoke coming from?"
A woman approaches them, her badge of Team Alpha glinting in the sunlight. "That's from the factory generating electricity," she explains, her tone carrying a hint of weariness. "Why don't you come to my house? We can discuss everything there."
Accepting her invitation, Ash and the group follow her to a quaint wooden house. Inside, the woman offers them tea, a small gesture of hospitality amidst the chaos outside.
"I'm Jane, and as you can see from my badge, I'm with Team Alpha," Jane begins, acknowledging Ash's return with a note of astonishment. "Prince Ash, your presence here feels like a miracle."
Ash remains humble. "I wouldn't call it a miracle just yet. Can you shed some light on what's happening in the Viridale Kingdom?"
Jane nods, taking a moment to recount the kingdom's true history. "Let me first share the origins of the Viridale Kingdom," she explains.
Jane delves into the past, recounting how the first queen, Alice, becomes the ruler of the Kingdom. The Viridale Kingdom was once known as Wonderland, a magical place where mythical creatures known as Pokemon roamed. Alice's journey was guided by a Buneary dressed in a waistcoat, clutching a pocket watch — symbols that drew her to this enchanted land. She soon discovered her destiny: to vanquish the menacing Hydreigon named Jabberwocky and overthrow the tyrannical rule of the Red Queen.
With courage and cunning, Alice infiltrated the castle, locating the legendary sword destined to slay the Hydreigon. Her actions, however, provoked the Red Queen, leading to a fierce confrontation and the demand for Alice's execution. In a dramatic turn of events, Alice faced off against the fearsome Jabberwocky, wielding the vorpal sword to deliver the decisive blow. This act of bravery turned the tide, rallying the Red Queen's own knights against her oppressive reign.
In the aftermath, Alice ascended to become the rightful queen of the Viridale Region, her rule solidified with the blessing of the King of the United Region. The tale of her triumph over adversity and tyranny had become a legend passed down through generations, shaping the history and spirit of the Viridale Kingdom.
ane's expression darkens as she delves deeper into the kingdom's history. "Unfortunately, a thousand years ago, everything took a drastic turn due to the betrayal and overthrow of the 18 regions," she explains somberly. "The once-mystical Wonderland, lush with forests and teeming with life, was transformed into fields for agriculture and sites for industrial factories. This rapid development came at a steep cost: the destruction of habitats crucial for Grass-type Pokémon."
She pauses, her eyes closing briefly as a wave of sadness washes over her. "Grass Pokémon that once thrived here faced dire fates. Some retreated deep into hiding, while others were commodified for profit. Tragically, some even became slaves or pests, subjected to cruelty that ultimately led to their demise."
Insey's question echoes the group's confusion and dismay. "Why did it come to this? What were the king and queen thinking?" she asks, searching for answers in the midst of this troubling revelation.
Jane begins her explanation, shedding light on the factors that led to the kingdom's transformation.
"Centuries ago," Jane starts, her voice carrying the weight of history, "the kingdom faced pressures that reshaped our landscape. The need to grow food and cultivate crops like rubber and tobacco drove extensive land clearing. Forests, once teeming with life, were converted into vast fields to meet the growing demands of a changing world."
She continues, "Additionally, the demand for timber skyrocketed, not only for construction but also as fuel for burgeoning factories. These factories, in turn, produced more tools designed to expedite tree cutting and agricultural activities. The cycle of extraction and production accelerated, leading to a rapid depletion of natural resources and habitats."
Trenor furrows his brow, concern evident in his voice as he addresses Jane's explanation. "But what about the pollution caused by using timber as fuel for these factories?" he inquires, drawing attention to the environmental repercussions of industrial practices.
Jane nods, acknowledging the valid point. "Indeed, using timber as a primary source of fuel has its consequences. The smoke and pollutants emitted from these factories contribute significantly to air and water pollution, affecting not only the natural habitats but also the health of both Pokémon and people in the region."
Before Jane can elaborate further, Mark interjects with a question of his own. "What about the Pokémon that were being treated as items for sale?" he asks, his concern directed towards the exploitation and commodification of Pokémon in the kingdom's transformation.
"The illegal trade of Pokémon has been a dark underbelly of our kingdom's history," Jane begins, her voice tinged with sadness and frustration. "Rare and valuable Grass-type Pokémon like Bulbasaur and Lileep were often captured and sold to collectors for exorbitant prices. Their uniqueness and rarity made them highly sought after, leading to their exploitation and endangerment in the wild."
She continues, "Similarly, Pokémon like Parasect, known for the medicinal properties of their mushrooms, were harvested in large numbers for profit. The leaves of various Grass Pokémon, each with their unique properties, were also traded illegally, fetching high prices in the underground market."
Jane's tone grows heavier as she delves into the grim reality of these practices. "The sad truth is, the allure of money blinded many to the ethical considerations. The potential profits from selling rare Pokémon and their parts were immense, yet the majority of the people in the kingdom remained impoverished. It's a stark contrast — the value placed on these Pokémon in terms of money versus the dire economic situations faced by the populace."
Ash's expression darkens as he recounts the troubling incident they witnessed. "We saw a soldier mistreating an elderly woman and confiscating her vegetables," he informs Jane, his voice tinged with disbelief. "What reason could they possibly have for such cruelty?"
Jane's response is laced with bitterness and frustration. "Those vegetables are taken as taxes," she explains, her tone dripping with disdain. "The food grown in these fields is meant to line the pockets of greedy merchants and government officials. They impose heavy burdens on us common folk, forcing us to toil in the fields for meager rewards while they reap the benefits without lifting a finger."
Her disgust is palpable as she continues, "The wealth gap is glaringly evident. These affluent individuals enact oppressive rules and regulations, while we struggle to make ends meet. My husband, August, is a testament to this injustice. He dared to rebel against this tyranny, only to be met with surveillance and suppression."
Golly's question reflects the growing sense of unrest and desperation among the commoners. "Didn't the farmers and ordinary people unite in rebellion against the government?" he asks, his voice carrying a hint of defiance. "Would you be willing to submit to their rule in such circumstances?"
Jane's response is tinged with resignation as she elaborates on the harsh realities faced by the populace. "When there's barely enough money to put food on the table, buying weapons becomes a distant dream," she sighs heavily. "Many are suffering from hunger, lacking the strength to rise up against the oppressors."
She then turns to Ash, her gaze filled with a glimmer of hope. "But amidst this darkness, there's a beacon of hope, and that's you, Prince Ash," she declares.
"Me?" Ash's confusion is evident as he tries to grasp the significance of his role. "Is it because of the prophecy?"
Jane nods solemnly. "Yes, you are our only hope," she affirms, placing her faith in the prophecy that foretold of Ash's pivotal role in bringing about change and liberation for the oppressed. "Please save us."
Lillie's practicality comes through as she asks for the plan. "So what's the plan?"
Ash's determination shines through his response. "First, we need to neutralize the soldiers in this village," he begins, his voice firm with resolve. "Once we secure this village, we'll move on to liberate others, ultimately reaching the capital. Our goal is clear: to dismantle the oppressive regime once and for all, ensuring a brighter future for everyone."
The group's unity and determination are palpable as they set their sights on a daunting yet necessary task — to confront injustice and pave the way for a new era of freedom and equality.
I'll end the first chapter right here, and this is the situation of Viridale Kingdom. I hope you like it.
