There was a commotion of an intruder. Reyna was reading a novel while drinking some hot cocoa when her peace got disturbed. Buccaneer was supposed to get the intruders, but he dragged a reluctant Reyna along. She really wanted to know what happens next in the novel she was reading...
Reyna sighed as she watched Buccaneer fight a little blonde boy. It seemed like his right arm was automail, and compared to Buccaneer's, his wasn't adapted to the cold snow. She trailed her eyes to the metal armor that was freeing himself from the net he was trapped in. Reyna did not expect the guy to throw his armor head and gasped lightly as she noticed there was nobody inside.
"Are you okay?" The armored guy asked the blonde.
"That freak... I would've been killed by Winry before I froze to death out here!"
"Not bad, brat." Buccaneer grinned, "You did well for having a regular automail." His eyes trailed to hers as a sign.
Her turn now.
"But this is it for you."
Reyna walked silently to the two intruder's back and aimed her steel swords to both of their necks, as the other Briggs guards aim their guns. The blonde seemed a little shaken as he turned around and saw her eyepatch, but sighed in defeat.
"Security personnel from Briggs?!" The metal armor assessed.
"Geez, at gunpoint again?" The short blonde sweats.
"Brother," the armored guy motioned to the wall.
Brother? And his automail... Then they must be...
The Elric Brothers that she had heard of from Gracia. What were they doing in Fort Briggs?
Her deduction was correct as the short blonde introduced himself as Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist. He explained to Major General Armstrong, but she still didn't trust him as Armstrong motioned to Reyna to do body checks. Reyna obeyed with a nod.
"Just get along with it," She whispered softly to Edward, hoping he'll follow instructions to avoid more fighting. Edward gulped and nodded as he was reluctantly searched.
They found a letter in his suitcase, and one of the men gave the letter to her to give it to Major General Armstrong. The letter was from her brother, and she simply ripped it apart.
Reyna looked at the blonde as he looked up to the Wall in awe.
He was just like her when she first came here.
The Major General interrogated the two Elric brothers for their motives. She eyed Miles from the side of her eyes as the interrogation went on as she was bored and sleepy. It was obvious that the two were hiding information. Miles just gave her an eye roll, knowing that she had spent her night reading and tried to ignore her. The boys seemed to discuss their true motives about coming to the Wall. Miles was trying to focus on the interrogation.
"...Is what I'd like to say, but me and my ward are highly interested in Eastern Alchemy."
Reyna blinked at this, and turned to the Major General who was looking at her with a pointed eyebrow stare. Reyna gave an apologetic nod and started focusing on the topic, now that they're talking about stuff that she likes. She had always been interested in learning more about alchemy, and Olivier had shared the same sentiment, albeit for different reasons.
"You two are acquainted with that girl from Xing, right?"
"Yeah, I guess you could say that..."
"It's technology we don't have in this country. I want it."
Olivier was straight to the point. And to be honest, Reyna also wants it too.
"You can never have enough technology. Especially in this land, where we frequently combat Drachma, a large nation. Depending on how we apply it, Eastern Alchemy may become a useful combat tool for us."
"Hang on! Eastern Alchemy is especially versed in medicinal purposes. Using that for war--"
He has a heart. Reyna doesn't want to go to war either. She loves how alchemy creates objects, but hates how it can destroy too. It was like two sides of the same coin, and Reyna would never flip it.
"I assure you, Fullmetal, that Alkahestry can do much, much more than for medicinal purposes only." Reyna had cut him off mid sentence and stepped forward, "Even if Major General wants it, I would be the one entrusted with such knowledge to execute plans regarding the alchemic arts. And I assure you that it would be used as a... 'last resort' if we ever need it. We do have morals."
"...Who are you?" Edward had asked confusedly, staring at the eye patch that she wore, oddly reminding him of the number one man of Amestris.
"Reyna Mustang," She held out a gloved hand. The two brothers gasped at the surname in familiarity.
"Steel Alchemist." She gave a polite smile. Ed's eyes widened as he took note of transmutation circles from the inside of her gloves, and finally noticed the silver pocket watch on her belt, and also several blocks of steel tied like a lasso on the other. Her two swords from earlier was gone, and based on Ed's analysis she decomposed them back to blocks.
"Edward Elric, Fullmetal Alchemist." They shook hands, "This is my brother, Alphonse."
Reyna had turned to the armored guy and held out her hand. Al had shyly shook it as Reyna gave him a comforting smile.
"She's Mustang's sister." Olivier stated smugly. Reyna deadpanned at their rivalry, a little bit annoyed being related to Roy.
"I didn't know he had a sis--"
"Don't ever mention him in front of me, he's nothing to me." She gave off a sweet smile for warning. The two brothers shuddered. "I am under Major General Olivier Mira Armstrong, and trust me, Fullmetal, you better talk before the Major General feeds you to the bears."
Reyna followed behind Olivier and Buccaneer as the interrogation finished. Miles were left with the two brothers to give them work. Thoughts were on Reyna's mind at their newest arrivals. From her letters with Maes, he had explained to her that Roy had picked up two strays...
"Reyna, are you listening?" Olivier stopped and turned to her ward.
"I'm sorry, Major General. I've had things on my mind." Reyna bowed.
"Is it from the new arrivals?" Olivier assessed, "Do you know something about them?"
"Nothing much. I just know from... Maes... That Roy took them in." Reyna shook her head. "Edward Elric is one of the youngest State Alchemists to get the license."
"Oh, so he almost took your record." Olivier scoffed. Olivier and her rivalry with Roy.
"Check on the brothers. I want eyes on them, and tell me if something happens." Olivier ordered.
"But it's supposed to be my break time..." Reyna muttered. Olivier stared at her disappointedly.
"You've been like this ever since the death of Maes Hughes." She pointed out and took a step closer to her ward. "I've tolerated you long enough. You used to be so determined. Eager to learn, and smart. Now you're lazy, and you don't take work seriously."
Reyna looked away.
"Where was the smart young girl that begged me to take her under my wing? The one thay dreamed to be the greatest alchemist to ever live?"
Reyna's knuckles tightened. Olivier took notice.
"You had a dream. Tell me, if you're still like this, how can you move forward? You can't let one death be the end of your life. You need to move on because if you stop in the snow, you'll freeze and die."
With that, Olivier turned around to go, but looked backwards to her ward.
"Get your head together, Reyna. You hear me?"
"Yes, ma'am!" Reyna saluted and watched her mentor go on her way with a lot on her mind.
