Chapter 1: State and federal regulations
As Chell slowly wakes up she looks around and notices she is in what looks like a bedroom. She removes the covers and gets out of the bed stretching as she does. She notices an object with the aperture science logo. Seeing this she decides not to make the bed as she decides to be a little rebellious. A robotic announcer says "Good morning, you have been in suspension for fifty days. In compliance with state and federal regulations, all test subjects in the Aperture Science Extended Relaxation centre must be revived periodically for a mandatory physical and mental wellbeing exercise." Chell groans at this and just assumes that it will be some press ups and a written paper.
The announcer interrupting her thoughts says "You will hear a buzzer. When you hear the buzzer look up at the ceiling." The buzzer goes off and Chell stubbornly looks at the floor, a couple minutes later after the announcer has still not spoken, she decides to look at the celling. A ding goes off and the announcer starting up again says "Good. You will hear a buzzer. When you hear the buzzer, look down at the floor." The buzzer goes off again and Chell looks at the floor as she thinks This seems way to easy, I bet there is something big about to happen. The announcer then says "Good. This completes the gymnastic portion of your mandatory physical and mental wellness exercise." This makes Chell surprised since she thought she would at least have to jog on the spot or something.
The announcer says "There is a framed painting on the wall. Please go stand in front of it." Chell wonders why she would have to look at a painting, but she decides to anyways since she has nothing better to do. When she gets there the announcer says "This is art. You will hear a buzzer. When you hear the buzzer, stare at the art." The buzzer goes off, as Chell stares at the painting she feels annoyed that the announcer felt the need to mention that the painting was art since a child would know this.
The announcer then says "You should now feel mentally reinvigorated. If you suspect staring at art has not provided the required intellectual sustenance, reflect briefly on this classical music." Classical music starts playing and surprisingly Chell kind of likes it, but it is interrupted again by the buzzer and the announcer saying "Good. Now please return to your bed." Chell doesn't feel tired until all of a sudden, she starts to feel a drowsiness. She stumbles to the bed falling asleep again wondering what is in store for her.
An unknown amount of time has passed since Chell last woke up, she wakes up again and the room looks ruined, the lights are off and the tv is showing an error message, the room also looks like more of a mess. The announcer glitching out says "Good morning, you have been in suspension for nine nine nine nine nine-" A loud banging is head on the door as someone says "Hello? Anyone in there?" The voice is male and sounds British. This makes Chell confused, but she is still getting her bearings so when the tries to walk to the door she has to steady herself on the bed. The voice again says "Helloooo?" Chell this time is able to get to the door. It bursts open and a weird sphere on a rail comes in. "HA, I knew someone was alive in here, I'm Wheatley who are yo- AH! Oh. My. God. You look terribl- ummm... good. Looking good actually." Chell glares at the personality core as Wheatley again starts speaking saying "Are you ok? Are you- Don't answer that. I'm absolutely sure your fine. There's plenty of time for you to recover. Just take it slow." Chell realises she was stumbling the entire time while walking towards Wheatley, so she tries to steady herself, she leans on the wall to do so. The announcer says, "Please prepare for emergency evacuation." Chell gets concerned at this and is stressing out internally, but Wheatley doesn't seem concerned as he says "Stay calm! 'Prepare'- Thats all their saying. 'Prepare.' It's alright. Don't move. I'm going to get us out of here. You MIGHT want to hold onto something. Word of advice, up to you." Wheatley goes into a compartment at the top of the room that then closes, Chell feels the room start to move as a loud engine starts up, the room jostles since Wheatley can't move the room that well, so Chell falls to the floor. Wheatley hears this and "You alright down there? Can you hear me? Hello?" When Chell doesn't respond the room stops as he leaves his compartment and thinks for a moment before saying "Most test subjects do experience some cognitive deterioration after a few months in suspension. Now you've been under for... quite a lot longer, and it's not out of the question that you might have a very minor case of serious brain damage." Chell gets alarmed and tries to find something to write on so she can communicate and there is paper but no pen.
Wheatley continues what he was saying by saying "But don't be alarmed, alright? Although, if you do feel alarm, try to hold onto that feeling because that is the proper reaction to being told you have brain damage." Chell doesn't hear this as she continues to find something to write with and makes do with some blue paint in a draw and writes I can't speak I am mute. Wheatley says, "Ah right ok that makes some sense erm just hold on again, would you?" Chell nods wondering what is going to happen but as the room starts shaking again all those thoughts go out of her head as she tries to hold on.
