He felt a tug - a rough tug - on his sleeve.

He looked down to find Guideau's graceful hand gripping the fabric of his shirt.

"What's the matter?" he asked in his usual gentle tone.

"Give me that book." she gestured somewhere behind her.

"My, always so demanding," he joked. Guideau glared at him. "It's not something I can just grab and hand to you. I have to buy it."

Predicting her intentions, he pulled out his wallet before she could rifle through his pockets in search of the money herself. Even if Guideau wasn't quite familiar with the way the world worked, she'd seen him pay for her food and other things on several occasions now. He gestured to the shopkeeper, who immediately rounded the counter and offered his help.

"How much is that book over there...?"

The train journey was quite peaceful. No arguments about an unsatisfactory job, no name-calling, or complaints about the food. Guideau spent most of the journey reading, lost in the thick volume.

Ashaf smiled to himself, thinking that maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to spend a little money on books after all.

Someone must be paying for all those books Guideau has in her room... I wonder how much oney Ashaf earns considering ALL the things he has to pay.
