Chapter 4
It was already nighttime. Lena walked around the graveyard. She held a stake in her hand, walking around. Then she sensed a vampire around. As they seemed to start getting closer, she quickly turned around to stake them until she felt her arm being grabbed.
"Hey, watch it," Spike had her wrist.
"It doesn't help that you're sneaky," Lena sighed. Spike let her wrist go, keeping his eyes on her.
"Still watch where you're bloody waving that thing," Spike reminded her.
"Maybe it's you who should be protecting me. Look, my brother and I had a scare once a vampire bit me, making him stronger than most. He was hard to kill until my brother was able to catch him off guard. Giles worked with me for a while, and he said that my blood apparently serves a purpose."
"I'm not so sure if it would do me any good love. I appreciate you asking me, but I highly doubt I'd ever need it," Spike got close to her, taking her hand.
Lena looked behind Spike, seeing a vampire right behind him. "Behind you."
Spike took the stake, punching them and driving the stake into the vampire as he turned to dust. "That was fun," Spike said, brushing the dust off him.
"Offer still stands, just let me know," Lena offered.
"You know, I'd never let anything happen to you. I've done the whole watching thing. I always protect the ones I care about most," Spike said, getting close to her.
"I know."
Another vampire took a step closer, he noticed her scent being different. The smell of her blood was like a sweet scent. He tried to get closer, and Spike took the stake, killing him. "That was easy," Lena replied.
"Well, let's move on," Spike led her into his place.
He shut the door, locking it behind them. Lena turned to look at him, seeing him removing his jacket. Spike tossed it on the chair, getting close to her.
"I know your history. Giles showed it to me in some book he had," Lena said, remembering.
"Not that I'm proud of it pet, what's your point?"
"Every so often, I've had these dreams like I'm fighting someone. He was a vampire but a different kind. Whoever he was, he ends up making his own breed of vampires. I tried killing them with stakes, but it didn't work."
"It was just a dream, nothing more."
"Having a soul helped you rationalize?" Lena wondered. Spike didn't seem to mind that she was asking about his history.
"Yes, having a better grasp on right and wrong." Spike felt like he was almost having a moment when Buffy rejected him. He had hoped that Lena wouldn't. He knew would wait for her forever. She was so beautiful with her long hair and green eyes. It had been a long time since he had seen a woman around her that looked this in a long time. There were plenty of women but not what he would be looking for.
The next morning, Lena made it to the office doing work at her desk. She knew Spike was near by probably bugging Angel. When Lena got done with the paperwork, she headed into Angel's office, handing him the paper he needed. Spike was sitting in the chair in front of Angel.
"I have a meeting to run soon," Angel said, looking over the paper.
"There, it will help you present it," Lena replied.
"There is a really cute guy out front, really short dark hair, built, girls swooning him," Harmony said, coming in the room.
"That's just wonderful," Lena said, rolling her eyes at that walking out front. She stopped recognizing him. "You're here already," she hurried over to him, giving him a hug. He hugged her back, glad to see her.
Spike felt a tad bit of jealousy. "Who's your friend?"
He kissed her cheek, and Spike wasn't too fond of what he just did, staying calm.
"Your breath stinks, but this is my brother Derek, and this is Spike, and the other guy is Angel," Lena introduced him.
"These are the guys you told me about?" Derek looked at her.
"Don't worry, he knows about you guys. I filled him in," Lena assured both Angel and Spike.
"That's a relief, I was almost ready to have a little bone to pick with you kissing her," Spike said, coming up to him relieved.
"So you two are together? I'm not sure why she didn't tell me," Derek said nicely.
"Like it matters. I've known Spike for a while now. Remember vampire with a soul?" Lena nudged Derek.
"You're her brother. Nice to finally meet you," Angel said nicely.
"Same, so what is it you guys rebelling to protecting the innocent?"
Angel led him to his office so they could talk more. Spike and Lena followed behind going into Angel's office. Angel had Spike shut his double doors. Spike sat down on the chair and Lena sat next to him.
Angel explained to Derek about who he was and what the whole agenda was about. It was nothing Spike hadn't heard before. His attention was on the woman he loved feeling like after so long he finally wasn't alone. Part of him wanted to give up on finding anyone. Luckily, he met Lena in time before deciding to do so.
"It's nothing I've not heard before," Spike whispered in her ear.
She turned to look at him. "Right, you've told me this before."
"Love, it gets old," Spike replied.
"I find it funny how you almost had it in with my brother." Lena said finding it humorous.
"I've been through hell when it came to trying to have a relationship."
"Spike, I'll be honest, the last guy I was with, well, he hurt me. We were together a little over a year. He cheated on me with some other girl. I get it," Lena assured him.
"One thing we may have in common." Spike looked at took a phone call, and Derek noticed how Spike looked at his sister. It wasn't just your typical guy wanting sex. He could tell he was completely head over heels for her.
"Spike, come here for a second," Derek got his attention.
Derek led him out of the room. "My sister has dated, and she's only had one serious relationship. It really hurt her, so she hasn't really had much to do with wanting to be with anyone. Just treat her well, the guy she was with thought his career was more important," Derek explained.
"I fought for my soul trying to get a woman's approval, which didn't work. A fella like myself bloody knows what it feels like being rejected," Spike replied.
"What do you want from her?" Derek questioned him.
"Just to love her and be loved back. She's the only one who has treated me normally. I'm not just some damn thing." Derek listened to him attentively.
"You're aware of what she is?"
"Yes, she told me. I'm over 150 years old, mate. A lot of run in's are mostly new vampires or inexperienced." Spike wasn't surprised that her brother questioned him.
"I could tell by the way you looked at her that there was more than just sex." Derek said," Bring the protective brother. "
Spike sighed at that. "I'm in love with her. She's the sweetest woman I met who doesn't want to kill me. She's not ready to be serious."
"Buffy right? I've heard of her," Derek said knowing her name.
They talked a little longer while Lena sat in front of Angel helping him organize his stuff. Spike came back in the room with Derek seeing Angel and Lena organizing his files.
Lena knew that Derek must have questioned Spike. Derek was her only brother and both of their parents were gone. Spike stood next to her watching her putting things in order. "Derek, you didn't grill him that bad did you?"
He couldn't help but snicker. Lena took a crumbled piece of paper throwing it at him. "My brother is nosey," Lena said annoyed.
"Love, I'm not surprised," Spike looked at her.
Lena sighed. "Don't take it personally."
"Oh no, pet, I'll just get used to him grilling me every time I piss you off." Lena couldn't help but give him an annoyed look.
"Hey, come in here," Angel lectured them to come in the office with the television on.
They stopped watching the news about a mysterious killing. People were found dead, and their bodies were shriveled up like a raisin. They sat there listening a moment. The incident happened not too far from where they were.
"Well, it looks like we got some new baddies out there," Spike said, listening.
"Derek, where is your book of vampires you stole?" Lena asked him.
"I didn't steal it," Derek protested.
"The book is over three hundred years old. I might be able to find something," Lena replied.
"There's a book about us?" Spike asked her.
"A book about different kinds. You all drink blood, but there are different kinds. My brother stole it from an abandoned museum he was stationed near," Lena explained.
"It was abandoned no body there," Derek said, trying to convince both Spike and Angel.
"Idiot," Lena rolled her eyes. Spike looked at Lena then at her brother listening to them bicker.
