I had been floating for so long.

Somewhere, but not anywhere particular.

I would catch glimpses, powerful visions of-

A girl. A woman.

Me.

"Do you know where you are?"

The old man in a wooly sweater and lab coat asked me as I stared straight ahead, standing firm and at attention.

"The Institute." I said, my own voice calm, breath in and out.

I had always wondered what this would feel like, to breathe, to exist.

"Do you know my name?" He asked next, smiling, waiting for my response. Slowly, I turned my head to look at him and I knew-

He is not one to be trusted.

"You are Father." I said and at my words he gave a satisfactory nod before folding his hands behind his back.

"It is nice to finally meet you, X1-09."

Such painful memories.

I could feel them slipping away.

So I let them go.

There was no before.

So there could be no after.

Only now.

That is what I've told myself since coming to be, since waking up on the cold slab of a medical table within the Institute.

I knew previously I had been just a script, a powerful algorithm designed and coded, meticulously engineered and put within a synthetic body. Tall, visibly young and female, pale, long wavy hair nearly white, eyes clear blue. Designed to be lethal, faster, stronger, more resilient than normal. It was just a vessel to me.

But even in that simpler form I knew one day I would be able to feel the air on my skin and the sun on my face.

One day.

Until then, I was studied, trained, and conditioned to be the next Courser. It was tedious and repetitive work, but I was fine with that.

I am a patient being.

Until then?

I will wait.

A/N:

Hello! Thanks for reading! This is an updated/new version of an older fic I published years ago called Furie, I left it up so you can read how bad it is lol. But with the new show and me diving back into the games the past few months I wanted to return to this idea and see it through. So I hope you enjoy! There will be more characters and I will dive into romantic pairings as the story progresses into several parts, but for now it will be pretty cut and dry and focus on the main story mostly. I published this on AO3 under the pen name Ashybury so don't worry, thats me lol but tbh im not a huge fan of that site so figured I'd publish it here too.

Enjoy!
