"Well, if you want to, I think we should go home and come back. We still need to find tansy!" Mousepaw mews.
Specklepaw simply nods again. After that, the two brothers are quiet on the way back. They don't run into any problems, so there wasn't much to talk about, even if they could talk while carrying herbs. However, they do stay close the whole journey.
Soon the two apprentices reach the familiar rocky shore of the place they called home. As usual, RainClan camp was low on activity, plenty of fish had already been caught, so the warriors were free to relax in the sunshine, share tongues, and tell stories at their leisure.
Angel was sharing a trout with her mates Sandclaw and Lillacstream. Brookpath and Tansystream were grooming each other in a patch of sunlight, their white fur shining even more than usual. Goldenthroat was telling a story to Irisheart's kits, Lilystream lying at her side, and Brambleheart at the other end of the kits.
When Brambleheart notices Mousepaw arrive, she slowly gets to her paws and follows him. Mousepaw gives her a slight nod, knowing what the elder needed.
"I see we're well prepared for Greencough this season." The old molly chuckles.
Mousepaw nods again and puts his bundle down for a moment. "Let me put these away, I'll get your alder ready at the same time." Mousepaw says.
Mousepaw quickly crouches into the cave entrance and puts his herbs in an outcropping of stones were he and Petalstripe put unsorted herbs. They were still out gathering more, so they would sort through them later. "Just put them right in here!" Mousepaw explains to Specklepaw cheerfully. He then carefully slips the cobwebs off his own tail as Specklepaw sets the catmint down.
"And now for Brambleheart!" Mousepaw purrs and grabs some of the bit of alder bark. He was glad Petalstripe come back with more of that soon.
"Thank StarClan, my old tooth was right killing me." Brambleheart purrs gratefully as Mousepaw comes out of the den. "You're very welcome!" Mousepaw purrs and gives the bark to her to chew on. The medicine cat was glad he could help her. He was fortunate that not every medicine cat task mean dealing with a life threatening injury or illness.
As the apprentices turn to leave, Brambleheart calls out to them.
"You're going out again?" She asks in surprise.
Specklepaw nods. "Ya, we are."
"Well don't you have itchy paws?" The elder chuckles, "I was the same way when I was your age. But after a while you learn it's okay to take breaks. Relax. Enjoy yourself."
Specklepaw shakes his head.
"We need to find tan seeds."
"Tansy." Mousepaw corrects.
"Tansy." Specklepaw says.
Brambleheart purrs and shakes her head, still chewing the bit of alder bark in the side of her mouth. "Alright, alright. But next time I will make you stay for one of my stories."
"W..we'll be happy to!" Mousepaw purrs, waving his tail goodbye, "Bye!"
Something about the day was incredibly peaceful. On the return trip to the Twolegplace they run into no problems, no twolegs, no monsters, no dogs.
But when they reach the garden again, Mousepaw smells a cat scent. A kittypet must have been here. The tabby steps out cautiously, trying to see if they were still around. If there was, maybe he should look in a different garden to prevent confrontation. The scent wasn't that fresh though, so maybe the cat had already left. The medicine cat follows the scent, and it lead towards the row of plants where he found the catmint earlier. But just then, he hears a yowl from Specklepaw.
Oh no, did the cat run into him first?
Mousepaw hurries towards the sound, brushing past rows of leafy plants. When he reaches the edge of the rows, he spots Specklepaw. He was bristling angrily at something across the yard. Mousepaw follows his gaze to see what he was glaring at. Another cat. White with long fur. They were looking at Specklepaw with an odd look.
Mousepaw's eyes go round, realizing this cat had the exact description of the rouge cat, Bacon.
Was this Specklepaw's father?
Before Mousepaw can think, Specklepaw rushes at the cat, claws unsheathed. Mousepaw doesn't have much time before his brother would reach the cat. The little tabby medicine cat was a little afraid to move. He decides to...
