Lois Lane woke up with a headache she never ever experienced in her life before…
It's happening again, she thought and jumped out of the bed to rush into the bathroom and throw herself over the toilet-bowl. The third day in a row she felt sick for some reason. Only shortly after waking up. After some tea, aspirin and some fresh air she always felt better quickly for the rest of the day. She was convinced that today will be the same.
Clark was not in bed. That meant he was either out on a safe or in the kitchen making breakfast. As a farm boy he was an early raiser.
"Lois?!"
"I am fine!" Lois said quickly when she realized that Clark was indeed in the kitchen.
Lois flushed away what she produced, washed her face and mouth, and went straight back to the living-area where she was greeted by the scent of fresh brewed coffee and fried eggs.
"Good morning, Clark!"
"Morning, Lois!" Clark said a bit worried while already handling her a cup of peppermint-tea for her stomach. Lois innocent smile faded quickly. "Lois, please go to the doctor!"
"I am fine, Clark!"
"You're not! I am not going to argue with you about that! I am just worried! This is going on for days now!"
"This is nothing!" Lois said and turned around to change and prepare to work.
Clark is so cute when he is worried, thought Lois. They knew each other for 4 years now! They are married for 7 months. Yesterday they celebrated their seventh-month-anniversary with a picnic on the top of the Daily-Planet globe. Except the fact that Clark is Superman, too and often out in the action to save the day, they live a pretty normal life here in their cozy one-bedroom apartment in Metropolis. Both have exciting jobs at the Daily Planet, they are successful, and they have great friends and experience many adventures together…
For some reason, Lois was even though she had to throw up and was as pale as a vampire, in a very good mood…
At least until the moment, their chief-editor Perry White ordered her to his office harshly… only one hour after arriving at work.
"Close the door!" Perry ordered.
Lois closed the door after her and turned to her boss. Over the years, Perry learned to value and to respect Lois for her ambitions, her hard work, and her great articles. She was not the naive intern anymore, who disobeyed his orders and didn't do what was to expect from normal interns. After Lois sat down, Perry showed a piece of paper to her.
"I want you to go to this place. You are already expected there!" Perry ordered.
"What is that?" Lois asked. Her smile faded when she saw what was written on the note. "That's the doctor down the street!"
"Yes! You are obviously sick. If this is contagious, we can't risk you infecting the entire place." Perry ordered. "I know you are stubborn, Lane. See this as an work-order…"
"But…"
"No discussion, Lane!"
Reluctantly Lois went to the doctor that was only two buildings away. On her way out of the office, she passed Clark's desk to tell him that he won! And Clark smiled satisfied when he realized that Lois finally goes to see a doctor.
After waiting a while in the waiting room, forced to read old magazines, Lois indeed got an idea for an article: How doctors make their patients sick with outdated information? When she finally got into the office, she was greeted by a doctor who had the same grumpy expression in his face as Perry. Lois wondered if they were brothers…
"So… where is the problem?" he asked.
Lois explained everything, and of course blushed it off. The doctor start to examine her…
"And other symptoms?"
"No! And I don't even know why I am here!" Lois complained.
"How is your diet?"
"I watch my diet closely! I am not focusing on fast food if you believe that. And I make sports!"
"And you have this for days? And only in the morning?"
"Yes!"
"No fever?" the doctor asked before looking on the thermometer she had in her mouth. "No, looks good! Lay down their and pull up your shirt."
Lois obeyed and laid down on the lounger. The doctor start to feel her tummy.
"Does it hurt when I press here?"
"No!"
"Or here?"
"No!"
"Hmm…" the doctor then start to use his stethoscope to listen on her stomach. "…I think we can eliminate a viral infection! I also don't think it is a food poisoning!"
"Good, that means I can go!" Lois said and already raised but the doctor stopped her.
"Not so fast, Ma'am!" the doctor ordered harshly again. "I will prescribe you something against the sickness! But one more question, have you been sexually active lately?"
"What is this question meaning?" Lois asked offended. "My private life does not concern you!"
"Well, I would have to run some more tests! But we can't eliminate the possibility of a…"
"WHOA… STOP STOP STOP!" Lois sat suddenly upright. "Are you going to tell me that I am pregnant?"
"You seem so surprised? You are married, are you?"
"Yes!"
"And you and your husband are…"
"Okay, okay… Yeah! But…"
"But what?"
"We both honestly didn't expect this?" Lois said and blushed.
"Why? Is one of you infertile?"
"No! Incompatible!" Lois murmured abashed.
"What?"
"Nothing!" Lois said. She couldn't speak out loudly that her husband was actually an alien, and that both simply don't expect to be even able to get pregnant, have kids together. "I mean… ehm… when I make this test, when do you get your results?"
"By tonight!"
"Let's get over with it…"
When Lois left the doctor's office, she was even paler than before. Could it be? Is it really possible? Is she pregnant?
She loves Clark! She loves him more than anything else! And she can't imagine being with someone else! Sure she was not really a family-oriented person. More a career oriented! But Clark… what will he think? He is Superman! He has powers! How will he react? Will the child have powers? Clark wants to be normal! But… oh this was too much for her to think now…
There was a pharmacy right below the doctor's office. Silently she handed her prescription to the clerk…
"I have to look in the rear. One moment please!" she said and left.
Lois used the chance to look around. There was only one other customer and another pharmacist inside. Lois eyes wandered over the various special offers and one of them was for pregnancy-tests…
Is it a coincidence that the light over the pregnancy-tests was flickering to catch her attention? Is some odd ghost sitting in the lamp to lure people there? Why they cost 15 % less than normal now? Lois head was spinning again while she, without realizing it, rubbed with her hands over her tummy. It felt like something kicked in her tummy and out of reflex she went to the shelve with the tests. She took the test, showed it under her jacket and went back to the counter, right when the pharmacist came with her prescribed medicine.
"Anything else?"
"Ehm, yes…" Lois said, and discreetly showed the test on the counter. "This, please!"
"Oh… Understand! Would explain why you got prescribed the pills with the…"
"Yeah, yeah… just hurry up! I have to get back to work!" Lois said and looked around to keep sure that nobody was watching her.
"Hey, now I know where I know you face from!" the pharmacist said when she saw the name on the prescription. "You are Lois Lane, the Daily-Planet-Reporter who knows Superman!"
"Yes!" Lois confessed.
"How is he?"
"Nice!" Lois smiled and thought about her husband Clark again.
The pharmacist looked back and forth between Lois and the pregnancy test and Lois realized what the woman was thinking about.
"HEY… I am a married woman! What do you think about me?" Lois said when she realized that the woman imagined her in bed with Superman. Well, that was the truth! But the people don't need to know that!
Lois left the pharmacy in a rush and went straight back to the daily planet building. In the lobby she slipped discreetly into the lady's restroom and hid in the cabin that was farthest away from the sinks.
Every passing second felt like an eternity, when Lois looked back and fourth between the test, her wristwatch and the user's manual she read at least 10 times. She looked up to the ceiling, thinking about Clark who was most probably up at his desk, if he was not out somewhere on a safe. Lois wondered if the test will even work? Maybe she bought a broken one? That's why they were on special-offer? Yes… And the test can't detect it because the father is an Kryptonian? But suddenly… Lois realized that the test was not broken!
In clear black letters, the word 'pregnant' appeared on the small screen…
"Oh… my… gosh… I am pregnant!" Lois murmured before her face color switched immediately from pale to red. And so she start to scream: "I AM PREGNANT!"
