Chapter 1: Shut in
"My life used to be simpler. Started out as an average teenage kid in Queens. Only to be given powers of a spider from one bite of one. I made a promise to my uncle I'd use them for good. With Great Power Comes Responsibility. But it was before things shifted for me…in the worst way.
Who am I? I'm Peter Parker. But I was known as New York's Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. But no more."
My best friend is dead. The woman I love has broken up with me. And I quit my job just to give pictures that make me look bad. But I lost my apartment because of that. But my aunt took me in till I got my life together. But the truth is…I just gave up." Peter narrated.
Peter had hung up his Spidey suit since his relationship ended and lost his apartment staying with her aunt: May since but she has worried about him since his mishaps.
May came in a robe in concern.
"Peter? You've been in here all day. How are you holding up?" May asked.
"I don't know." Peter said.
"I still wish you and MJ could work things out." May said.
"Me too. But…I really hurt her, Aunt May. I mean we tried to talk after Harry's funeral. But…she didn't seem…she didn't feel very safe with me anymore." Peter said.
May sat next Peter trying to comfort her depressed nephew.
"Remember what I told you before Peter. You start by doing the hardest thing. You forgive yourself. I know deep down Mary Jane knows you still love her. And whatever comes around I will stand by you. Your Uncle Ben will always be looking down at you supporting you." May said.
"I'm not so sure anymore. There's…something else I…gave up with." Peter said.
"What's that?" May asked.
"I promise I made it to him. It was from that talk we had before he…he tried to teach me something about responsibility. And I…threw it away after I broke up." Peter said.
"You just need time sweetheart. You'll never disappoint him. Or me." May said.
May gave Peter a kiss on the head and she got up walking away leaving Peter to his thoughts.
He stood up and opened his closet where he stored his Spider suit but hadn't worn it for six months.
Peter looked at it in frustration and sadness. He took it out to observe it, remembering everything he went through since he became Spider-Man.
He then threw it back in the closet and shut the door.
Peter went to sleep but it was hardly well...
He had nightmares…about the Green Goblin.
And Venom.
Peter woke up gasping as it was already morning with car horns honking and birds chirping outside.
He walks out in the living room to find May left him a note she left his breakfast in the microwave.
Soon after he was doing the dishes but then…the phone on the kitchen wall rang.
Peter answers.
"Hello?" Peter asked.
There was no answer.
"Hello?" Peter asked.
Still no answer but on the other side…
…it was Mary Jane Watson.
After Spider-Man not being a show for six months she got tempted to check on them but after the break up…she didn't know what to say.
"Hello?" Peter's voice asked.
Hearing Peter's voice made MJ's heart sink as much as she wanted to speak she couldn't find the right words…
"Is anyone there?" Peter's voice asked.
MJ hung up in guilt and depression.
Confused Peter put the phone on the holder as his depression sank again.
Soon he saw May leave the TV on a news report hearing about a murder at ESCU. A young woman was found butchered to death in an alley on campus.
Peter just casually turns it off.
He just didn't think the city was his problem anymore.
Later that afternoon when May was home from work they were having tea as they talked more.
"Have you found a new job yet?" May asked.
"No." Peter said.
"Peter, this behavior isn't normal. It's really scaring the hell out of me. Talk to me." May said.
"I can't." Peter said.
"Have you at least thought of calling MJ?" May asked.
"Yeah everyday but…she probably would just hang up on me." Peter said.
"What really happened between you two? I won't know how to help without details." May asked.
Peter looked down and he didn't know how to tell May what happened without exposing himself as Spider-Man so he tried to explain without mentioning it…
"I cheated on her with Gwen, Aunt May. She…saw us kiss. It meant nothing but…she saw us at the club she worked at and…I tried to make her jealous…that's how I hurt her. And then…I got into this fight there and she tried to stop me but then I…" Peter said sadly.
May was in shock.
"Peter…" May said.
"I screwed up everything Aunt May." Peter said.
"No Peter, no…your Uncle Ben and I had our hand times too. Some were worse than a fight." May said.
"Really?" Peter asked.
"Oh sure. Your uncle was a hard head like you. There were times we thought we couldn't work it out. You and MJ are no different than any couple in a fight." May said with a smile.
Peter smiled briefly for the first time in a while as if May just pulled the blade in his heart out but the wound was still there.
Soon Peter was in his room again looking at a picture of him and MJ.
Peter sighed and then he layed back down on his bed…
