Chapter FIVE
Mary Evans or M as she preferred to be called held few things near and dear to her. Her family was one of the top things. When she met Dwight, she was just out of the academy and he was so different than her. She was straight laced and always slept with one eye open. Dwight wore his heart openly on his sleeve and trusted too easily for her taste, but she fell in love with him and three months later she was pregnant with Sam.
Dwight never tried to change her, he would say "You are who you are and that is who I fell in love with." Though raising children while being an agent was hard, she credited a lot to Dwight. With Sam being 28 and Stevie and Stacey falling at 22, it was never a dull moment.
And while all the kids knew that Dwight and Mary fell in love almost immediately, what they didn't, was that Dwight was an assignment. She risked everything to not only protect him but to love him. It broke all the rules and yet she didn't care. She fell for him the moment she read his file. And seeing him, seeing how caring and thoughtful he was in person sealed it. She hadn't ever felt that way about anyone. And that is what she feared was happening to Sam.
She hadn't wanted her children to follow in her footsteps, and yet Sam was determined to do it. He applied without her knowledge and without letting them know he was her son, he wanted an even playing field and earned everything on his own. She was proud of him in that aspect. And he was just like she was. Determined and unwavering. So having him falling for this Mercedes woman wasn't a good thing. He needed to settle for someone like Quinn, someone who was okay with him coming and going as he wanted.
Looking over Mercedes Jones' file she sighed. On paper she really was pretty damn amazing. It was no wonder Sam fell for her. And if she had it her way, Puckerman would have caught this case. But knowing Mike Chang was after this woman, meant they needed the best, they needed Sam.
"Worried?" Dwight asked, walking into the room and looking at his wife.
"She's beautiful…Smart…a teacher. And they were having sex on the side of the road…yeah I would say i am worried."
"They weren't having sex." Dwight laughed, then stopped when he saw her face. "Wait seriously? Sam has that kind of game? He's more like me than I thought." He smirked.
"Dwight! This is serious."
Dwight moved over to her. "What are you really worried about? That he will be like you? Would that be so bad?"
"You were in a completely different situation, she has some heavy hitters after her and Sam will literally do everything to protect her if he gets in more involved with her. I have to shut it down now… it's been a day and he's… pulled a full blown Mary." She answered, shaking her head.
"I'm still not seeing the issue, I got you in bed in six hours… he's an Evans and he could've fallen in with worse."
"This isn't love Dwight, you know it won't happen that fast. Lust always comes first and you knew how crazy it was for us. Being away from each other for more than ten minutes was horrible, he's not focused and his head is not where it needs to be… I won't lose my child because of this." Mary said.
"Hate to break it to you but that's not your decision."
"Actually it is, she will be reassigned. There's one more person who can keep her safe and I intend on using all the pull I have to make sure it happens."
Dwight shook his head knowing this was a horrible idea. "Calling Roz isn't going to fix this, he's already got his hand in this case…"
"Roz is the best, she may be a veteran in this game but even the cartel won't cross her. She has a good team too, they can get her out safely and to a proper safe house out of the country. I have to do this… Sam isn't ready for what will happen if he remains her case agent."
"So taking away his one chance to prove he is more than capable of handling tough assignments is how you plan on keeping him safe? Samuel Evans? Our son? You know it won't work, he has defied you many times and will do it again. It would be better if you just helped him navigate this rather than snatch it away from him." Dwight reasoned and Mary just shot him a knowing look.
"No. It's my call and I'm doing this. He has a week before she's extracted to Holland, I already called Roz."
Dwight looked at his wife in disbelief. "Your job and your personal life isn't supposed to dictate how you handle cases or are you forgetting that this same tactic was used on us? Do you remember what you did to your superior?"
"Sam won't do that to me…" She said biting her lip.
"The hell he won't." Dwight said walking out of the room.
Mary took a deep breath, "He won't…this is the right thing." She said to herself. "I hope."
Mercedes sat in the back of the SUV, Sam wouldn't let her sit up front, staring outside the window trying to make heads and tails of this situation. Last night was really hard for her, because she wanted to stay away from him, wanted to push him off of her but the man gave her so many orgasms she lost count.
He stayed true to his word, after going down on her and giving her three orgasms back to back, he took her basically in every room of the safe house. And every time she was ready to tell him to get off of her, he would kiss her or touch her and she would lose her damn mind. She chewed her bottom lip, looking up at Sam in the rearview Mirror and caught his eyes.
"Don't."
She raised an eyebrow. "Don't what?"
"Look at me," He breathed.
Mercedes felt herself blushing and heat pooling in her core causing her to shift in her seat. "Don't flatter yourself. I just wanted to know where we were."
He smirked. "Really? Because I think if I were to pull over and bury my head between your thighs, you would let me."
Mercedes looked away from him and shook her head. "That was your first and last taste." She replied, shifting again because her damn body was already addicted.
"Are you sure about that? I can smell you from here sweetheart, just the thought of me inside of you, has you soaking."
Mercedes flashed her eyes at him giving him a challenging look before looking away. "You think so highly of yourself…" She said squeezing her thighs together and biting back the moan that was begging to be freed.
Sam smiled, shaking his head, "Come up there then." He said issuing his own challenge.
Mercedes looked at him knowing no matter what she did she would be playing into his silly game, so she wanted to flip the tide in her favor. "Pull over." She countered a little shakily.
Sam smirked. They were in his home town and he knew exactly where to go to not be disturbed and he was close to a spot. Turning into an abandoned parking lot he smiled while parking the car.
Mercedes shook her head, "After what happened yesterday you really did pull over? Surprising."
Sam shrugged. "What can I say? I like a challenge and you, you are both a challenge and trouble for me Mercedes."
She scoffed. "Trouble for you? Why? afraid your mom is gonna perv drop in on us again?"
Sam caught her eyes in the mirror. "My mother is not like your typical mom, she's been an agent since she was 21 years old, right out of college. She is dedicated but also very serious."
"And let me guess, she already hates me because we got it on." She said matter of factly.
"Well basically."
"Come on, it's not like I am the only one you have ever done this with." She said both wanting to know if it was true but also hoping it wasn't. Being one of many wasn't something she liked to be.
"You actually are. I don't…some agents get too close, I never have." He said honestly as he gripped the steering wheel.
"And why is that?" Why did she care? She asked herself but she knew the reason.
Sam took off his seat belt and turned to face her. "Because, there is just something about you that makes me forget myself. You are dangerous to me Mercedes, but that also means I am dangerous to you, I can't keep you safe if I am distracted…and knowing my mother, she will get that and have a plan B by the time we get to the house."
"Plan B? Are you going to not be with me anymore?" That upset her in a way she didn't realize, she should be glad to be rid of him.
"Pretty sure you will be reassigned." He said. "And that's a good thing, I am no good to you in this position. The things I want to do to you…I can not effectively take care of you."
"And what if I refuse to go with them? You are a lot of things, a jackass, jerk, punk…you get the drift, but I feel safe with you. I won't go with whoever she chooses…"
"That won't matter." Sam sighed. "The person she will probably hire is not above drugging you."
Mercedes looked at him in horror before shaking her head. "I will just have to talk to your mother then." She said firmly.
"There is no talking to my mother about things she's already set her mind to, I should probably get you something to wear before we get there." He said turning around and putting his seat belt back on before pulling off.
Marley had been sitting in a dark room for days before they let her out. She was basically dragged down a long hallway before being shoved against a wall and water was thrown at her.
"Get cleaned up, you stink." A voice said before leaving her with another bucket and some clothes.
She fell down to her knees and sobbed, she wasn't sure how much time had passed but one thing she knew for certain. She should have left with Mercedes when she had the chance but her stupid loyalty to Justin kept her there and now she was somewhere.
"Hurry up!"
She quickly scrubbed her skin with the water and bar of soap then rinsed off. There was a shaggy looking towel that she grabbed to dry off before slipping the tattered clothes on.
"I'm dressed." She said softly and the door opened.
The large man just grabbed by the arm and walked her down another long hallway before they entered a room that had six other men all sitting around a large table. At the head of it was Justin, he was battered and bruised but alive.
Marley gasped and tried to break free from the man's hold but he just gripped her tighter making her wince.
"No need to try to run now." Justin said. His voice sounded strained but still as threatening as before.
"I… why am I here!" She asked, feeling tears filling her eyes.
Justin looked at her in disgust. "I need to find that bitch and you're gonna be the bait to get her here."
Marley shook her head. "I won't help you!" She shouted and Justin just scuffed.
"You don't have a choice. It's either help me or die."
"Then kill me because I would never betray her!" Marley said sobbing.
Justin nodded at the man that was holding her and he let her go. "Get her some real clothes and prepare her some food, the rest of you can leave."
Everyone did as instructed and when they were all gone Justin walked over to where Marley stood shaking. He gently caressed her arms and kneeled down so he could see her face.
"I would never really hurt you, I just need to save face around them. Here you're shaking." He said softly as he draped his jacket around her arms. "I won't ask you about Mercedes again okay?"
Marley looked at him and saw that he was being sincere. "You won't?" She asked.
"I won't and no one will hurt you here. You are protected and are my woman so they will treat you like a queen, whatever you want they will get for you." Justin assured her.
Marley wasn't sure what to think so she only nodded. "I want to go home."
"I'll get you home but I have to handle a few things here first. There's plenty of rooms for you to choose from and I won't make you choose mine. Let's get you showered and fed first okay?"
"Okay." She said softly and allowed him to lead her upstairs. She was surprised to see they were actually in some sort of mansion. It was beautifully decorated and there was a woman sitting on the sofa, she only glanced at them once before returning her attention back to whatever she was watching on TV.
He led her up another flight of stairs before they reached a hallway that had several rooms on each side. He led her to the fourth door on the right and nodded her inside. It was a wonderfully decorated room with a large queen sized bed in the center.
"You can shower in there and I'll have them bring you some food and clothes. No one will disturb you, get some rest and we'll talk tomorrow." Justin said with a soft smile.
"Why are you being so kind?"
"You mean a lot to me and I don't want you thinking I'm all bad anymore." He answered before walking out of the room.
Marley looked around before walking over to the window and seeing that there was no way in hell she could jump and make a run for it. She didn't even know where she was or how many people were actually in the house. She was also too weak to put up a real fight and a small piece of her wanted to trust Justin because that was the guy she fell in love with.
She went into the en suite bathroom and took a hot bath allowing the water to wash away her tears as she cried. She was still shaken up by the fact that Justin was still alive, she only remembered bits and pieces of what followed after Mercedes left.
The cops were called but the ones that appeared didn't say a word to her, they just placed a rag over her mouth and everything went black. When she woke up she was in a dark cellar that was cold and smelled horrible.
She was weak and tired, the hot water was refreshing and though she didn't want to like it she was going to sleep then plan on a way to get out of there.
After her shower she walked back into the room and there was a large selection of food waiting for her. She grabbed some of everything and ate in peace but her mind started to wander about Mercedes and if she was safe or not.
After they'd stopped by a local shop and gotten her some clothes, he took them to his parents. Sam wished he could avoid doing so, but it was unavoidable. His mom was Mercedes best bet and he knew it.
Mercedes looked over to him and noticed Sam seemed tense when they pulled into the driveway and based on the expression on the woman's face standing in the doorway she understood the tenseness. She was downright scary.
Sam turned and looked at Mercedes. "Whatever you do, don't mouth off."
"Excuse me!"
"You heard me, you are strong willed and hard headed and she, well she is too. Now when she mentions us sleeping together, don't feed into it." Sam informed her, before getting out.
He walked around and helped Mercedes out then led her up to the door where his mother was waiting.
Mercedes looked at his mother and felt immediately intimidated but she wouldn't show it, so she stood as tall as she could with her leg injury and pushed her glasses up.
Mary eyed the woman in front of her, her files didn't do her justice. While the photos made her look like a school den mother, she could see why her son fell for Mercedes. Shame, they would have had gorgeous kids. "So this is her? The one who all this trouble is following."
Sam nodded.
"I didn't ask for trouble, I was just trying to protect my friend. I didn't know self defense would cause all this." Mercedes said.
Sam rolled his eyes and Mary raised her eyebrow. "Excuse me?"
Mercedes didn't budge. "You act as if I asked for this. As if I did this on purpose. I didn't! I have never done anything wrong in my life and to be treated like a criminal…"
Sam nudged her but Mary shook her head at him. "Sam go take the bags inside."
He hesitated. "She got hurt by some glass. I am helping her inside."
"I got it, don't worry." Mary said, taking Mercedes' hand. Sam took a breath and walked away as Mary guided her inside.
"So you're telling me you have not had any affiliation with the Tres' or the Cartel."
"I haven't. I have never done drugs in my life. I have never wanted to take them either."
Mary guided her to the living room sofa. "So you really were just trying to protect your friend?"
"Yes."
Mary let out a sigh, she was studying the young woman and she could tell she was telling the truth. That said, Sam was still her child and whether either of them realized it they were already attached to each other on a deeper level.
"I assume he's told you that I'm having you moved to another agent already?" She asked looking at Mercedes to gauge her response.
"No disrespect but I'm not going with another agent." Mercedes replied.
Mary could tell by her body language she meant every word and would fight tooth and nail to stay with Sam.
"None taken, however your new agent is already here and after dinner you will be leaving with him."
Mercedes shook her head hard. "No I will not so you can send that person away."
Mary just smiled before getting up and walking away, though she stayed right outside the room to see how Sam and Mercedes interacted with each other. Mercedes sat there angry and tired, she didn't like his mother and that was saying a lot considering she liked everyone.
"Told you not to mouth off." Sam said sitting next to her.
"She is not a nice woman." Mercedes replied looking at Sam.
He shrugged. "She just doesn't trust you or me."
"Yeah the fact that she doesn't trust her own son, that is saying something."
Sam glanced at her. "And why is that?"
Mercedes stared at him. "Sam, you are this bad ass Agent of Shield/Avenger looking dude who came in and saved me. You went above and beyond and let's be honest, the fact that you got me in that car and on that plane was pure skill all on its own cause I was not coming with you. If I can see your worth and talent after two days, and your mom can't see it after all these years, then that's on her. But for the record even if she doesn't trust you, I do."
Sam smiled shaking his head. "Bad ass Agent of Shield/Avenger?"
She laughed. "You give off Captain America vibes, though Cap was too pure to hook up with anyone he was protecting."
"Had they looked like you, I am pretty sure he would have at least considered it." Sam said without thinking.
Mercedes blushed looking at the door then back at Sam. "I won't go. No matter who she has here I won't trust anyone but you."
"She isn't going to let this go and I won't be able to fight her…" He admitted.
"Then I will fight her."
Sam looked at her amused. "I'm sure you would but she is the person above the person above my head, the minute I get my reassignment papers I'm no longer your agent."
"Then I will leave. I don't trust her or anyone else. Period. I am not stupid. I know you guys are just protecting me out of the kindness of your hearts. You want something from me. I won't give it if I am not with you."
Mary walked back in the room. "Is that a fact? You are prepared to die on that hill? The hill which is my son?"
Dwight walked into the room, smiling before seeing her and Mary speaking and Sam on the sofa.
Mercedes stared at her. "Absolutely. 2000 percent."
"That answer alone let's me know that you will get both you and my son killed." Mary replied, shaking her head.
Dwight moved to sit next to his son. "How you doin' Sammy?"
"Do you not see this?!" Sam said, frowning.
Mercedes shrugged. "And if you send me with whoever the hell you think is better, I am dead anyways."
"Look I understand my son put it on you and you are sprung or whatever."
"Ma!" Sam yelled as Dwight snickered. Oh this was good.
"No! That doesn't mean you can put your life at risk because of good dick."
Mercedes shook her head standing up. "You think I am doing this because of good orgasms? I was having them with my vibrator at home. I am no stranger to doing it for myself."
Sam slumped back onto the couch. "Oh my God."
"Sam saved me. Twice. When they shot at the cabin he covered me so I wouldn't get hurt. He is really good at his job and I see he gets that from you. I won't go with whoever you have for me. They can drug me, they can tie me to a radiator but the moment I get free, I will run and whatever you need me for will fall apart."
Mary smirked. "What makes you think we aren't just doing our due diligence? Keeping you safe, which is indeed what we are doing."
Mercedes stared at her folding her arms across her chest. "As I said I am not dumb. If this was just about my safety I would have probably given a statement then shipped to my new place. With a new identity and all of that. But you, you are missing something. If I had to guess. It's Marley. You can't find her and you want me to help her flip on her lame ass boyfriend." She couldn't be sure she was right but she was 80 percent sure she was.
Dwight leaned over to Sam. "Oh I like her."
Mary narrowed her eyes at Mercedes. "So you know where she is then?" She asked.
Mercedes smirked. "You want information, Sam remains my agent and you back the hell off."
Mary balled and unballed her fist because for the first time she was in a corner. "If you knew something and didn't say anything you obstructed justice."
"I'm a witness and you need me, those are my terms. I might know something, I might not but you'll never get to Marley without me." Mercedes countered and the room fell silent.
"Well, looks like little Oprah knows her shit."
All eyes turned to the dining room where Roz Washington was standing. "You didn't tell me she had a backbone Mary." Roz said, eyeing Mercedes.
Mercedes looked over to her. "Little Oprah? Who the hell are you?"
"Who I am doesn't matter little girl but you best learn to respect me. I know twenty two ways to dispose of a body with no traces left. I held my first gun at 13, had my first kiss at 14 and killed my first bad guy at 20. Guess which one gets me off to this day? I am the best and am second to none."
Mercedes looked at her completely unimpressed. "Respect is earned and that's a bit sad that you're proud of those traits because you clearly lack the social skill to hold a decent conversation. You may be the best but your attitude makes me not trust you."
Mary's eyes grew wide because no one had ever spoken to Roz that way nor had anyone held their ground this long against the two of them.
"Well that's settled." Dwight said standing up and walking over to Mercedes. "Welcome to the family, do you like steak?"
Well seems Mary has met her match lol
Marley... Justin is an asshole!
