Minutes to Heaven
Part I
Izuku tried to get through the days with as little thought to what had happened to her as much as possible. She was able to function normally at UA, while she trudged through her work study with a heavy heart, unable to keep up the pretense long there.
Part of her just wanted to disappear, not exist for a little bit so she'd stop feeling like she was living in hell. She didn't want to even acknowledge what was happening to her, to what she had in her stomach.
If she was in denial, then she was fine with that.
Unfortunately, she couldn't live in her denial nor fully immerse herself in it, when her employer and mentor decided that he was going to involve himself and make sure she was taking care of herself. She was no longer being made to carry things, especially heavy things including any boxes. He was also constantly keeping an eye on her and almost hovering, ready to help her with something or take a heavy load from her if he saw her trying to pick it up or already carrying it.
It could've been annoying, but she admitted it was actually endearing. Nighteye wasn't the type to be outwardly showy or at least obvious with his concern, so that he was actually somewhat overt with it now meant a lot and was kind of…sweet.
"Midoriya-kun, can you come here?"
Speak of the Devil. Nighteye had leaned out of his office and looked for her, looking normal to everyone but extremely tense to her. Inwardly frowning, she made her way to him, clutching onto Sir's jacket still worn by her.
"Is something wrong, Sir?" she asked nervously, standing in front of him in his office. She glanced at the now closed door and wondered if the privacy meant that Nighteye was going to address the elephant in the room.
"Midoriya-kun, you're…pregnant. Please take it easy. While your work and help is appreciated here, I don't want you to strain yourself," he told her sternly, though it was softer than he usually was. "I will still assign you tasks, but allow the rest of us to take on the more heavier load around here.
"For that matter, have you been eating? I don't think I've seen you eat much during our lunches —you're eating for two now, so if there's anything you're craving or anything that'll help your appetite, please let me know. I will see what I can do. Have you been going to the doctor? Is it alright if you tell me what they said? If you don't want to, that's fine, but I'd like to know if there were anything specific they said that I should accommodate for you."
She grimaced and shook her head, pulling his jacket around herself tighter. "I haven't gone," she muttered. "I don't…I don't want anyone else to know. I don't want…I don't want to be be pregnant."
Izuku closed her eyes tightly, hating the thought. She started rocking on the balls of her feet, feeling herself withdrawing and even physically hiding into Sir's jacket. Then warm, large hands gently touched onto her shoulders, giving her a slight press and then fully landing onto her shoulders.
"Midoriya-kun, breathe."
She struggled through it, trying to bring herself back to the present. The hands on her shoulders softly moved to her face, cupping it and gently massaged her into awareness, giving her movement and feeling to anchor onto. When she opened her eyes, she was looking right up into his face, visible concern actually shown. His eyebrows furrowed and he was quiet, but he was there and still grounding her.
"The others don't know and I won't inform them, if that's your wish. But while I understand your reticence to accept and acknowledge the situation…you can't deny the truth. There's a child growing inside of you and it'll keep growing, whether you want to think about it or not. Unless," he hesitated. "Unless you would like an abortion? If that's what you would want…no one would blame you. Especially given how you got pregnant in the first place."
She froze still. Could she? Could she really choose that? Would she really be able to abort the baby inside of her? It wasn't too far along, she could get rid of it and it would be like it never happened —
"I don't have the money for that kind of thing," she muttered, wringing her hands.
His hands, still gentle around her face, pressed lightly. "I'll take care of it."
She blinked and then stared up at him in wonder and hesitation. "Could we do it now?" she whispered.
Nighteye nodded sharply, hands leaving her. Her face felt cold all of a sudden.
"I'll inform the others of our leave," he told her. "Wait for me by the elevators."
Izuku swallowed harshly and gave a small nod, moving away from him and leaving his office behind as she made her way out the office doors and to the hallway, where she headed to the elevators. Not too long after, Nighteye joined her and then they were entering the elevator in silence as it headed down to the garage level. Step by step, they headed to his car, as nondescript as Nighteye can become.
He unlocked his car, heading to the passenger side and opening the door, waiting for her. She scurried forward and slid onto the seat quickly, the door closing carefully after her. Then he'd headed towards the driver's side and went in, starting the car without a word. And then they were setting off and Izuku was clutching onto her seatbelt tightly.
Mirai knew that while he looked and acted calm…inside he had no idea what he was doing and was a mess of nerves. This was crossing all sorts of lines between them as employer and employee, professional mentor and student, as a regular relationship between a Pro-Hero and their intern.
It may have been the responsible choice to offer the abortion (and maybe even the expenses), but the option itself as well as the situation had gone on to be extremely personal and gone on beyond professional boundaries.
And something he had no experience in.
"I'm sorry for dragging you into this," she muttered.
He glanced at her before focusing on the road. "You did not. I forced my way into this situation and your problems, so I should apologize for my stubborn nature."
She didn't say anything for a moment, but then… "When we were playing 'house', Chisaki-san would have me cook for him, clean, and serve him like a wife. He demanded I call him 'Anata' and we slept on the same bed the two nights that I had been with him before I escaped. Part of me is wondering if I really left there," she admitted.
They stopped at a stoplight and it was silent until Mirai turned to her and grabbed one of her hands.
"You're not there anymore, Midoriya-kun. You're not with him," he told her firmly, squeezing her hand.
"Really?" she replied solemnly. "It's hard to believe when I remember everything so clearly with him, and then there's that the Sir Nighteye I know doesn't like me and I don't think would help and be this kind to me."
The minute flinch he'd made was so tiny, he doubted she noticed. But he understood where she was coming from, even if it made him chagrined and unhappy.
"It was never my intention to make you…doubt me," he said carefully, the light changing and he beginning to drive again. He didn't let go of her hand yet. "Yes, in the beginning, when we first met…I challenged your worthiness in regards to One For All…but that had nothing to do with you as a person. Even from that first meeting, I found you as someone likable and considerate. The two of us could have even been friendly from the start, at any other meeting.
"However, no matter the circumstances, I would always have been someone willing to help you and offer what kindness I can in this situation, Midoriya-kun. I hope you understand that."
She didn't say anything at that and he didn't expect her to, but feeling her bring his hand closer to her, clutching it to her chest, spoke more than she needed to allowed.
"I believe you," she whispered.
Still, hearing that made him feel like he could take a breath of air.
When they reached the clinic, she got out of the car before Mirai could reach her. However, she stood by the car and didn't move, as still as a statue. It made him uneasy, but he just went to her side and stood there and waited. When she finally turned to him, he held out a hand and she took it and shuffled closer to him. He squeezed her hand in comfort and hesitated a moment before he pulled her even closer, tucking her into his side.
Together, they walked towards the clinic and entered it silently. Mirai brought her to the waiting room and sat her down on one of the chairs, before going to the front desk to take care of things. After he'd settled what needed there, he headed back to Izuku, the two of them sitting away from everyone in their small, quiet corner in the room.
His steady breathing was belied by the nervous and anxious energy that thrummed through him in truth, but her stilted breathing made it clear that she was obviously fraught with nerves.
"Midoriya-kun?" he questioned, even as he tried to soothe her by rubbing a hand on her back and holding her hand with his other. But she just continued to grow more distressed, breathing irregular as she started to quietly cry. "Midoriya-kun, please talk to me."
She shook her head and made a quiet, wounded keening sound that made him start to become distressed, not knowing what was wrong or how to help her.
"Do you want to leave?" he asked gently and when she didn't say anything, he was about to scramble for anything else that could help her, until she gave just the slightest of nods.
He let out a small exhale of relief that there was something he could do and stood up slowly, carefully pulling her up with him. Without another word or look around, he brought her close and tucked her into his side again, leading the way out of there and back to his car. It was a split decision but Mirai brought her to the back seat instead of sitting upfront, and together they sat huddled in the back with only her quiet crying interrupting their silence.
For a moment, they just sat and collected themselves. Mirai was also fraught with his own nerves, wishing he could touch her and see into the future, be able to know his next steps and what he had to do for her. But he refrained, knowing it wasn't the time and that she needed him to be there —right then and now, to be present with her.
"I can't-I can't do it," she muttered, staring at her feet, her hands wringing together on her lap. "I can't go through with it."
Mirai nodded and didn't say anything to that. Her choice was her own and he wasn't going to talk her out of it or into it. He wasn't even going to ask why. Her feelings, her reasons were her own and he had no business to them if she didn't want to share with him.
"Then what do you want to do? Where do you want to go now?" he asked instead and she fidgeted in her seat.
"Can we just drive around?" she pleaded and though Mirai had never been one for aimless driving before, he acquiesced to her request and got out of his car and went to the driver's side.
She stayed behind in the back seat, but he didn't expect her to move much after such an emotional toll being visited on her. In fact, she just lay down and huddled into his jacket that she still wore for all this time.
"You should tell Toshinori," he said quietly as he backed out of his parking spot.
"I don't want him to know. I especially don't want him to know."
Mirai stayed silent to that, but he thought that she shouldn't be alone in this.
"Good evening, Toshinori," he greeted stiffly into his phone, not only because it had been too long since he'd talked to the other man (civilly at that) and because of why he was calling him.
"…Ah, Mirai. Good to hear from you. Is something wrong? Did something happen with Young Midoriya?"
Mirai hesitated but in the end decided to push through. For all that Midoriya didn't want Toshinori to know, she needed the support that Mirai couldn't give alone and the comfort that someone she was close to could provide.
Even if this further upset her against him, for going against her wishes.
