Chapter 3 The center.

Mia runs through the forest, pushing through branches. She stumbles and lands on the road, shaking her head to get the leaves off her. "Man, that was quite the journey, I thought those beedrills would never stop chasing us," she utters as she sees a couple of paws standing in front of her. She lifts her gaze to Umbreon's red eyes as he sits down in front of her.

She looks to the side and sees Viridian City gate. "We made it, Umbreon. Now we can get to the Pokémon Center and make sure that Bulbasaur is all right," Mia says with a relieved smile as she gets up to her feet and brushes herself off. "Umbre-Umbreon," her Pokémon replies, and they head on their way.

They walk around town for quite a while, and she looks around. "I wonder where this Pokémon Center could even be," she asks out loud. Umbreon begins to sniff the ground. "Umbre!" he says, and Mia turns to her Pokémon, who proceeds to point its nose in a direction.

"Oh, you can smell the medicine, I bet," Mia replies. They walk around a corner and see the big center in the middle of town. "The Pokémon Center is bigger than I thought it would be," Mia says and walks up to the entrance, where the door opens up. She steps back to avoid colliding with the person in front of her, who stops and looks at her. "Oh, Mia, I'm amazed you made it here so fast. I mean, obviously, I got here first, having a ride and all, but I did spend some time catching Pokémon, otherwise, I would have been here even sooner. That reminds me, have you caught any yet?" Gary brags more than he is interested in the answer, and Mia blushes.

"Well, no, I haven't caught anything yet," she says, tying her hands together. "Ha! Well, that rules you out of the competition like that. Becoming the Pokémon Master will be a piece of cake," Gary laughs and pushes past her, followed by a bunch of cheer-leading ladies. "Gary, Gary, he's our man! If he can't do it, no one can!" they cheer. Mia waits a moment for them all to pass and looks to Umbreon, who seems just as unamused as she is.

"Well, becoming a Pokémon Master was never my goal to begin with," she mumbles before a smile comes to her face, and she heads inside and steps up to the desk. "Hi, uh, you must be Nurse Joy," Mia asks the lady behind the counter, who is wearing a nurse's uniform and a hat. She has big red hair that ties into big loops hanging just behind her head, and her bangs are neatly cut and flow over her forehead.

"That I am," Joy answers before her face draws in surprise. "Oh, Mia, look how much you have grown," Joy says. "Yes, right, it has been a while since you last made the trip to my family's farm," Mia replies. "That it sure has. Oh, I am thrilled to see you finally stepping out into the world, and hopefully, you choose the right profession for your skill set," Joy tells her. "My skill set?" Mia asks. "Why yes, with your intellect and care for Pokémon, I know you would make a splendid pair of helping hands around here. You have done a great deal of studying on your adventures as well, of course. I even bought books for you to read once I heard from your parents that you were heading out soon," she says and crouches down and lifts up a big heavy load of books. "All that is for me?" Mia asks as Nurse Joy hands her the books. "I sure did. Whatever path you choose, we all have high hopes for you," Nurse Joy says and watches as Mia puts the books into her backpack.

"You have high hopes?" Mia asks, and Nurse Joy nods. "Of course, we do, dear. Now, what was it that you needed help with?" Joy asks. "Well, it's my Bulbasaur. I did give her some medicine, but I want to make sure that she is all right. We encountered Beedrills, you see," Mia explains the situation. "I see. Of course, I will have a look at her. Just place her Poké Ball on the tray, and we can begin," Joy explains, and Mia looks down at Umbreon. "Do you want a check-up too?" she asks, and Umbreon only shakes his head. "All right, if you are sure," Mia says and places the Poké Ball on the tray. "Well, if that is all, then we will check on your Bulbasaur and get back to you soon," Joy informs Mia, who nods. "Right, thank you, Nurse Joy," Mia replies, seeing the nurse head into the back with the tray.

Mia looks around and sees big boxy-looking phones lined up in the corner of the room. She walks over to them, seeing the screens. "I suppose we should call home and let everyone know that we are all right," Mia mentions, and Umbreon nods as she sits down in front of the phones. She picks up the line and dials the number. She hears a ringing and sees her brother pick up the phone. "Hello?" he says. "It's just you," he says, disappointed, and turns his head. "Dad, Mia is on the phone," he says, and she hears a noise and sees her father run up to the phone, worried and with his hair messier than usual, covered in dirt.

"Uh, Dad, are you all right?" Mia asks. "Huh? Oh, the dirt, yes. I hate to tell you this, but... but..." he says, sounding frantic as he begins to shed tears. "Dad, what's going on?" Mia asks, concerned, and she can see her father turn his head to the door. "Oh, Lila, Mia is on the phone," he says, and her mother runs over too, looking equally worried and covered in dirt.

"Could someone please tell me what's going on?" Mia says, concerned. "Well, how do we say this, dear?" her father says, looking to his wife. "Well, you see, dear, you... uh," she says, not wanting to be the one to say it. And her younger brother rolls his eyes and looks into the camera. "Your Umbreon is gone," he says plainly. "My Umbreon?" Mia utters. "We swear we have looked everywhere," both her parents say at the same time.

"Don't worry, I believe you. It's actually one of the reasons I called," Mia says, and it catches their attention, and they see their daughter pick up Umbreon and place it on her lap. "There he is! Oh, gosh, we were so worried," her mother says. "You can say that again," her father replies. "Well, apparently, Umbreon followed me, and we were too far to go back home with him, so, you know," Mia says. "Umbreon!" her Pokémon says. "Well, I'm glad to see that both of you are all right," her father says, and her mother nods. "I told you guys that Umbreon was fine," her brother adds.

"That is true, you did. Come to think of it, you and Umbreon have been inseparable ever since you got him in an egg that Kelsy sent you when you were just half as little as you are now." "I'm not that little," Mia mumbles in defense.

"Anyways, we have been together for so long; this kind of feels right that he is with me on my adventures. And maybe someday I will get to meet Kelsy on her journey and witness one of her discoveries for myself," Mia says eagerly. "Well, right now, she is in some snowy alps. I'm not sure where she is headed off to next, but I am certain she will be in contact soon," her father tells her. "Yes, you know Kelsy; she is never in one place for too long," her mother adds. "Anyways, have you called Professor Oak yet?" her other asks. "No, I haven't."

"Well, be sure to do so. He will want to make sure that everyone who has been to him for their first Pokémon is doing all right, and he will know how you are doing as well." "I will, thank you, Mother. And thank you all for looking for Umbreon. I know you must have been worried," Mia says. "Pah, I wasn't worried," Marci tells them. "Oh, Marci won't admit it, but he was worried too. I saw him look around as well," her mother says. "I did not," Marci says and blushes a little.

"Well, thank you for calling in, and be sure to do so soon, all right? I will be calling Kelsy and tell her everything is fine," her mother says. "Wait, you called Kelsy too?" Mia asks. "Of course, I did, dear. Now, make sure to change your underwear and don't talk to strange people, all right?" her mother adds. "Yes, especially men. Got that?" her dad adds. "I will. Thank you." "All right, love you, honey. Bye," both her parents say. "Whatever," Marci says. "Love you guys too. Bye," Mia says and hangs up.

"Whoa, they are a handful at times," she says and looks at Umbreon in her lap. "You sure had everyone worried. I suppose we should call Professor Oak next," she says and dials the number, waiting until he answers. She sees him looking at all the surveillance screens in his office, seeming busy. "Uh, Professor Oak?" she utters, and the gray-haired man turns towards the screen, his eyes widening as he runs over. "There he is! Umbreon is fine after all," Oak says. "Wait, they called you too?" "Of course, they did. And I had as many Pidgeottos and Spearows fly around to look for him as soon as we hear thet he was missing last nigth, and I even had turned on the extra cameras around the area to look. Has Umbreon gotten to eat? Is everything all right?" he asks. "Umbreon is fine, Professor, and so is Bulbasaur," she reassures. "Good to hear, and thank you for calling in. I like to keep tabs on the trainers who were sent off with Pokémon from this center. Oh, and especially you since you are aspiring to be a Pokémon caretaker, and a skilled one at that. It would be a shame to lose such potential and those skilled hands of yours. Well, seeing as you were raised on a farm and made to take care of many kinds of Pokémon, I am not surprised," Oak rants on.

"Right, skilled hands. I am not sure, sir. I mean, I didn't even catch anything on my way over here where Gary caught three Pokémon already," Mia utters, feeling unsure. "Now, don't you go doubting yourself. Remember, your family has helped me out on many occasions, and vice versa. I have watched you grow up, and I know for a fact you have a knack for the care of any kind of Pokémon. Your Eevee would never have evolved into an Umbreon the way he did if it wasn't true. Believe it or not, but you are strong and more skilled than you realize, so I do not want to hear any more down talk, got that?" he says.

"Right," Mia replies. "Now, when it comes to Gary, he is a special case, and he has plenty of support going with him as well as talent," Oak tells her. "Thank you, Professor. I needed that," Mia says.

"Well, if there is nothing else to report and the both of you are all right then I have done my part. Umbreon really had the whole town worried, you know," he explains. "The whole town?" Mia says in surprise. "Why, of course, you have helped take care of many people's Pokémon alongside your family all these years, so when people get the word that your Pokémon might be in trouble, everyone wants to help out to return the favor, you know," he tells her.

"It sounds like I have to call everyone in the whole town and thank them and tell them what happened," Mia tells him. "No, that is all right. I will take care of that part. It's good to see him safe in its rightful hands, and I know they will all understand once I explain everything." Oak reassures.

"Thank you, Professor, for looking for him too, and I apologize if it caused you any trouble," Mia apologizes. "Right then, you two take care now. I will be eager to hear from Ash. Hopefully, he will get there soon as well, but knowing Ash, one never knows what he is up to. Oh, and there are other trainers that I hope to see soon as well. Uh oh, I am getting another call. See you soon," he tells her. "Right, thank you again, Professor," she replies and hangs up.

Mia takes a deep breath. "The whole town? I am surprised they haven't got the authorities involved," she thinks out loud, with an awkward bubble forming on her face. "Right, I better call Kelsy as well," she says and dials the number again, and it answers quickly.

"Mia! Umbreon, there you two are, all right. Oh, I was so worried when I heard. I insisted that they call the authorities on the matter, and we made the compromise that if we hadn't seen him by the night, they would call," Kelsy says, her blond hair bouncing above her eyes as it brushes over her forehead and goes to her shoulders. And she is wearing a pink furry coat. "Authorities," Mia utters.

("So, they were planning on calling them,") she thinks to herself as another sweatdrop forms. "Oh, but I am delighted to see my protégé is all right. Have you caught anything yet?" she asks. "No, I haven't. Things got kind of rushed over here," Mia replies. "Oh, that is surprising. I had expected more of you. Well, I guess a little hiccup at the start is understandable. You are still very young, I mustn't forget."

("Right, the expectations again,") Mia thinks to herself as a worried lump forms in her gut. "Well, like I said, I am delighted to see that you are both all right. I mean, I got your Eevee, which is now your Umbreon, from a very special friend of mine who had heard so much about you, from me of course. She said she had a good feeling about the egg and sent it to me to deliver to you on your seventh birthday. And just from seeing Umbreon with you, I know that we are all correct in expecting big things from you. As you are well aware, Eevee only evolves into Umbreon for a skilled and caring owner who is showing great potential and promise, and you must have a great bond as well. Oh, I am so thrilled! Oh, what may you become? No matter what it is, we are all cheering for you," Kelsy tells her with so much eagerness she is barely sitting in her seat right.

"There is a lot to live up to," Mia says hesitantly. "Oh, pish posh, do not let the big talk get the better of you, dear. We all already know that you are going to do great out there in the world," Kelsy adds. ("Yeah, her words aren't helping,") Mia thinks to herself as she gulps. "Well, do you know when we can get to meet?" Mia asks. "Huh, oh, right. Well, I am not sure as of this moment, but I will tell you when a good time for a meeting arises. I have to go, dear, and again, I am glad to see that both of you are doing well. No toodle-oo," she says and hangs up.

"Right, bye," Mia says, but the screen is already dark, and with a heavy heart, she puts the phone on the machine and she looks down, her head filling with doubt, and she feels a tongue on her cheek. She looks to Umbreon on her lap. "Thank you, I needed that, and you are right, I just need to take this day by day and give it my all in the meantime," she cheers up. "Umbr, Umbreon," Umbreon says cheerfully.

"That is right, let us greet the day," she says, and Umbreon jumps out of her lap and onto the floor as Mia stands up eagerly. "That is right, let us head on to the next place," she claims, and Umbreon cheers as well. "Mia," she hears Joy say, and she turns around towards the counter. "Yes, ma'am," she says eagerly. "Your Bulbasaur is ready, and I am happy to report that she is doing great. Just as I thought, the Pokémon in your care always get the best care," she adds as Mia goes up to the counter and picks up her Pokéball. "Right," Mia says shakily. ("I nearly forgot to pick her up, I must be more responsible than this,") her mind yells at her. "Thank you for taking care of Bulbasaur, Nurse Joy. I am off now," Mia says and puts the ball on her belt.

"Of course, anytime," Joy replies, and Mia turns around and heads to the door, which opens up and a tall guy who seems to be a year older than her walks in. "Move it there," he says and heads for the desk, nearly bumping into her, but Mia narrowly avoids his shoulder. ("Well, that was rude, or maybe he is just in a hurry to help his Pokémon,") Mia reasons for a moment and brushes it off and heads outside.

As she gets out she emidietly feels her gut rumble ''that is right I dropped my lunch, and I haven't eaten in a long time'' Mia mentions holding her stumac. She walks through town and wonder where she should get a bite to eat. "Someone help!" she hears someone yell running from the woods. ''Now what?'' she wonders as a kid with dark brown hair runs up.
