What do you know, two chapters in one month. Now I am officially ahead of Masakox and doing my own thing. A little word of warning for this chapter and maybe the next, I never did see episodes 2-3 of dragon-ball. I saw everything else, but not those two. It's a little off the mark of what happened, but this is an AU so that's fine. Anyways, enjoy!
Dr. Briefs waited for Gohan and Gine to prepare for their journey, as this was going to be a long one even with the radar. Briefs didn't have to wait that long. Gine and Grandpa Gohan only had one set of clothes each, and tended to sleep in such clothes. No, the only thing they were bringing with them was a red pole Grandpa Gohan kept on hand. Gohan figured this journey would be the proper time for Gine to learn how to use it.
"Well that was fast," said Dr. Briefs. "Are you sure you won't be needing a change of clothes? This journey might take at least a few days, and if you're going to be 'body guarding' me, who knows how dirty you'll get."
"We'll just wash them," said Gine. Dr. Briefs started blushing at Gine's innocence.
"I guess that's alright if it's between you and your grandfather, but are you sure about the chance of a strange man seeing your underwear."
"What's wrong with that?" asked Gine. Dr. Briefs got as red as a tomato.
"Don't worry," said Gohan. "I'll make sure she has her privacy, so you don't have to feel weird about anything." Gine recognized one of those big words…privacy: it meant lonesome time or secrecy. Yet, Gine wasn't sure what she had to keep secret. Was it just because there was a difference in gender? She always washed her clothes and went swimming in front of gramps just fine and he was a man. Then again, Briefs was worried because he was a strange man. Guess strangers weren't allowed to see other people naked.
"Gramps should have his privacy too, then," said Gine firmly. "If that's how you feel about it."
"Alright Gine," Gohan chuckled. "We'll take turns washing our clothes."
According to her grandpa, girls were supposed to be treated nicely. Gine thought that wasn't fair, as her grandpa deserved to be treated special and nicely as well. As for Gohan, he wasn't an indecent man, and he at least bought Gine underwear to wear when she wasn't wearing her regular clothes. They lived in the mountains, so there wasn't a chance of anyone coming to target young Gine, but even so, if Gine did run into anyone nefarious she could take them just fine. When Gine got a little more mature, he might give her the birds and bees talk.
"Alright," said Dr. Briefs composing himself. "If that's all settled, let's be on our way. My jeep has enough room for the three of us." Gine still took the vehicle in with curiosity. She'd never seen a jeep before. She'd seen scooter cars back on Vegeta, but those were for transporting vehicles not people. The spaceships had been more compact, they certainly didn't have wheels nor open roofs. She did her best to take in the entirety of the vehicle before getting inside it. When it took off, Gine was lurched into the back.
"Better put your seat-belt on, young lady."
Gine had only been in one vehicle in her life, and that traveled up not forward. This was new. Saiyans never needed land vehicles very much, as they could fly or run super-fast. Gine bet if she jumped outside she could race the thing. She was tempted to do just that, before she could jump out her grandpa caught her shirt.
"You don't want to get left behind if you get tired, now do you. This thing won't get tired so fast, so it won't stop so soon."
"Please grandpa, I don't want to just sit around in here all the time."
"Not that I don't think up you can keep up, Gine, it's just its better if the group stays together," said Gohan.
"Fine," said Gine, as she sat in her and began twiddling her thumbs.
"Your granddaughter really is something," said Dr. Briefs. "Fast enough to race a car, strong enough to lift one, despite her tiny frame…is she even human?"
Gine froze in her seat. All this time, her gramps had never asked about where she came from, never even asked what she was: had he not put together the alien thing, if not the Saiyan thing? These days, Gine didn't remember much about her parents, as far as she was concerned her Gramps was her only family. She might as well be a human, with some strange abilities. It was weird to her that normal humans were so weak, as her Grandfather was a strong man, someone who could rival her strength.
"I'm pretty strong myself," said Gohan, noticing Gine's unease. "I trained with a pretty impressive master, who happens to be the strongest and most skilled martial artist on the planet."
Gine sighed, so humans could be strong; her first statement still applies, she might as well be human.
"So you passed these skills onto your Granddaughter I take it," said Briefs.
"I taught her what I knew; it's a dangerous world out there, I'd like her to be prepared."
"I prefer not to fight if I can help it," said Gine.
"Really," said Briefs. "With how strong you are I thought you would have trained non-stop."
Great, thought Gine, the Doctor thought she was a freak.
"Every little bit helps," said Gohan. "We must be prepared for anything Gine might face in life."
"Poor girl," said Briefs. "At least you seem very capable for the world will throw at you Gine."
Gine chuckled to herself; she knew her strength was nothing compared to adult Saiyans.
"Gine is a gifted child," said Gohan with pride. "She is both strong and smart."
Gine blushed; no matter what her grandfather would always accept her.
They drove for a while until Dr. Briefs made a pit stop by the side of the road.
"Sorry folks, need a pee break," says Briefs as he exited the vehicle. Briefs went to hide behind the tree, which meant they were already starting to take the privacy thing seriously in Gine's mind. They waited for several minutes, longer than it usually takes for one to pee as they both knew.
"What's taking him?" asked Gine.
"I'm not sure," said Gohan. "Something might have happened. Stay here Gine."
"Why?"
"Because he might have his pants down, that's why."
"Ah, okay," said Gine, going back to twiddling her thumbs. "Hurry back, alright."
"I will," said Gohan, making his way towards the tree. "Doctor Briefs, are you alright?"
Just as he said that, he heard the sound of the man crying out in alarm. Gine heard the cry and her first thought was 'Oh, some action's happening.' She went to go see it, but remembered Dr. Briefs might have his pants down. She decided a good compromise was to get close enough so she could hear the action.
Gohan could see the trouble; Dr. Briefs was in the claws of a giant flying dinosaur.
"Release that man at once," said Gohan.
"I don't think I will," said the Dino. "I think I'll get to know him better…over DINNER!"
"HELP ME!" cried Dr. Briefs, as the Dino took off into the air. It was too high for Gohan to jump. He pulled out his power pole.
"POWER POLE…EXTEND !" cried Gohan. As Gohan cried these words, Gine peeked from behind the tree to see her grandpa take off into the air after the dino, vaulted by ever extending pole. Gine's eyes shone with excitement as her Grandfather prepared a kick, and along with the pole's help, knocked the wind out of the Dino's lungs; the Dino released Dr. Briefs. The pole in sync with Gohan's mind stopped extending as Gohan dropped and caught the falling Dr. Briefs, landing safely on the ground. The flying Dino landed not too far away, unconscious or probably dead.
"Power pole…retract!" said Gohan, and the Pole reverted to its smaller form. Gine, pleased with what she saw, went back to the jeep. 'So that's how the power pole works,' Gine thought to herself.
"Well…" said Dr. Briefs on the way back to the jeep. "You certainly weren't kidding when you said you could protect me from any dangers out here. That is quite a curious pole you have Mr…uh?"
"Gohan, my name is Gohan."
"Gohan and Gine…that should easy to remember; Anyways, quite a pole you have there? How does it work?"
"The best explanation I have is that it's a magic pole that can extend and retract as the user pleases, also it's indestructible."
"Where did you find such a stick?"
"My master gave it to me when I finished my training with him."
"Your master must have been an incredible man in order to have access to magic sticks."
"Quite, it's not the only magic he is said to be in touch with."
"And yet he taught you martial arts?"
"He's not magic himself; he just has magical items on him."
"I'd like to meet him one day," said Gine, popping out of the jeep.
"Were you listening in on us, little one?" asked Gohan.
"Kind of hard not to," said Gine. "I have amazing hearing."
"Add that to the list," said Dr. Briefs. "We better get going, we don't want that Dino coming back, or who knows what else?" They jumped back into the jeep and took off.
They drove for quite a while; the sun had started to set.
"Where are we going?" asked Gine.
"Not sure actually," said Dr. Briefs. "The point is to just drive around until a new blip shows up on the radar; that will mean another dragon ball is nearby. You see those two blips on the screen, Gine?" he said pointing to the screen. "That is us and our two dragon balls we have on us. Once a new blip shows up on the screen, we head in the direction of the blip."
"What if there's something guarding the ball, or what if the balls are hard to get to?"
"I did ponder that for a bit; if the ball is hard to get to do not worry, as I have come prepared. If something is guarding the ball, well I don't doubt the capabilities of you two in the slightest."
Suddenly, Dr. Briefs released a huge yawn. "Well, I'm apparently done for the day."
"But there's no blip on the screen," said Gine.
"Well I don't want to push myself too much, we can continue searching for the balls tomorrow."
The three got out of the jeep next to a large clearing by the road.
"I guess we should make camp," said Gohan. "Gine, you can go get firewood whilst Dr. Briefs and I set up the blankets."
"What?! Oh no," said Dr. Briefs. "We are not sleeping outdoors, it is too dangerous."
"You're going on a journey, did you think there would houses all along the path to sleep in?" asked Gine, wondering how anyone could be unprepared to sleep outdoors. "Do you want to sleep in the jeep instead?"
"Oh no, neither of those," said Dr. Briefs, reaching into his pocket. "I told you I came prepared."
Dr. Briefs pulled out a container filled with small capsules. He stopped short of a larger capsule, big enough to fill his entire hand. "This should do the trick," he said with a smile. He pushed a button on the capsule and threw it a couple yards in front of him. With a puff of smoke, suddenly there was a small house in front of the group. Gohan and Gine's eyes were wide, having been the first time they've seen something like this.
"Whoa," said Gine. "You never said you could do magic; are you a wizard?"
"Oh goodness, no! I don't dabble with magic…except to figure out how these orbs work. No, no, this is just an invention of mine. It's called "the capsule;" a nifty little containment device that allows easy transportation of goods and resources. With this invention I can carry a house, vehicles, even feasts and great supplies of water and medicine, all inside my pocket with little hassle."
"It still seems like magic," said Gine.
"Actually," said Gohan. "I heard about this recent invention when I was last in town. They're becoming quite popular."
"Yes," said Dr. Briefs smiling, and puffing out his collar. "I've quite outdone myself. Let's go inside shall we."
Inside the building were the amenities of a modern household, which Gine had never seen before, some not even when she was on Vegeta such as the television. Gine stared at it with wonder, she read about it in books but never saw one work; she always believed these sorts of things were works of fiction.
"Moving pictures in a box with sound," said Gine mesmerized.
"It's called a television," said Dr. Briefs as he watched the news.
"I know," said Gine, "I've just never seen one."
"Did you ever leave Mt. Paozu before?" asked Dr. Briefs. Gine thought about how to answer that question. There was a time when she wasn't on the mountain, but you can't leave if you've never arrived.
"No, I haven't," said Gine.
"How old are you?"
"I'm eleven," she said proudly.
"Your grandfather has visited towns before, but you haven't?"
"No, I like it on the mountain…mostly."
"Mostly?"
"Well, now I get to go on an adventure, and see other places."
"Maybe we should eat," said Gohan.
"Food!" cried Gine excited.
Dr. Briefs prepared some instant food, but it was very lacking. Seeing as he thought he'd be going alone on the trip, he did not account for the bottomless pit that would be Gine. Not to mention, Dr. Briefs prepared a pot of Coffee. Gine thought it was too bitter.
"What is this stuff?"
"It's coffee, young one."
"Coffee," said Gine. "I read somewhere people like to drink it to wake themselves up, but it's late at night."
"I just think it tastes good," said Dr. Briefs. Gine looked at him with a puzzled expression.
"I'm going to go get some more food."
"Are you sure you'll be okay Gine," said Gohan. "We don't know the area too well, what if you get lost."
"I don't get lost Grandpa," said Gine. She thought about it though. "On second thought, give me the power pole; I'll use that to find my way back if I get lost."
"You know how to use it already?"
"I watched you earlier," said Gine.
"I told you no peeking!"
"I could see it from the jeep," fibbed Gine.
"I'm still not sure," said Gohan.
"What moon is it tonight?"
"I believe it's waxing," said Briefs. "Why is it important?"
"It's fine then, the monster won't show up." Gine then bounded out the door.
"Monster!" cried Briefs. "What monster?"
"Gine believes there's a monster that shows up on the full moon," said Gohan.
"Why does she believe that?"
"Because I told her," said Gohan.
"Why did you tell her that?"
"So she doesn't go wandering outside at night."
"I guess that's fair," said Briefs. "If you have a problem with Gine being outside at night, you could go with her."
"I can't leave you alone, that was made evident today," Gohan huffed.
"You act like I'll be attacked in my own house," said Briefs.
"You might." Gohan had little faith in Dr. Briefs, the man seemed pretty incapable of defending the balls with his life.
Gine had wandered outside for some time, and eventually she came across a large centipede. She was no stranger when it came to hunting; she whacked that centipede on its head, killing it. Gine still wasn't sure if that was enough food. It'd be nice if see could share her find with her Grandpa and maybe that Briefs guy too. She looked overhead and she heard something loud in the sky. Maybe it was bird…or better yet a dinosaur! That'll be lots of food. She rushed over towards the sound, following the sky creature.
That loud creature was a plane, and inside this plane were two beings. They went by the names of Won and Ton. They were the loyal subordinates of the Emperor Basmati. Ton looked like a soldier man, whilst Won was a dog in a ninja suit. They were sent by the Emperor to find the Dragon balls themselves with their own radar. The emperor was not content with his small empire; no, he wanted to rule the world.
"Emperor Basmati, we have detected not one, but two dragon balls nearby," said Ton over the radio.
"Excellent news Ton, but don't just stand there…you two better get out there AND GET ME MY DRAGON BALLS!"
"Yes sir!" they both said nervously. They quickly landed the plane and exited it frantically with their radar. Back in his palace, Basmati was chuckling to himself.
"Yes, soon the whole world will bow to me!"
Gine approached the large creature, sneaking up on the beast in the dark.
"Power pole…extend," she whispered. It grew just long enough to take out the large creature. She ran up and smacked down on the creature's head. Instead of hearing a squishy crack of a creature's skull, she heard a metallic clang. "I don't think it's alive." She ran up towards the thing, and tapped the thing's wing; it made more clanging noises. Gine pouted,
"That does not sound like meat." She heard some growling and panicked yelling in the distance.
"That however, does sound like meat."
Following the sounds of the yells and growls she came upon a couple strangers surrounded by a pack of wolves. Well, Gine hadn't had wolf meat for a while, and luckily her power pole was long enough to take them on. She ran up on the wolves and smashed the pole hard on one of them. The wolves suddenly turned their attention to who was now attacking their pack.
"Come on, guys," said Gine. "I only need one of you; I can't take you all back with me."
They all started growling at Gine. "Well, if you insist."
Gine took out a couple by extending her power pole; she then spun the pole around taking out all the wolves surrounding her. The surviving wolves ran off. Gine turned to the strangers.
"Are you guys okay?"
"Oh yeah," said Won, "We're fine…thanks to you."
"Yeah," said Ton. "We'll just…go…we're going…bye." They then dashed off, freaked out by the immense strength of the little girl.
"Okay, bye," said Gine. She looked at the bodies of the wolves. "Food!"
"Gohan," said Dr. Briefs.
"Yes," said Gohan.
"I have some questions."
"Such as?"
"Why does your granddaughter have a monkey's tail? Also, she's never been to civilization, in the eleven years she's been alive?"
They heard a knock on the door.
"That must be Gine," said Gohan. He went and opened the door for her.
"The power pole works like a charm," said Gine smiling.
"Well then it's yours," said Gohan returning that smile.
"Thanks Gramps!" Dr. Briefs came to the door.
"So did you bring back food?"
"Yep, I brought back this guy," said Gine holding the centipede.
"That's something…" said Dr. Briefs. "I don't think that's suitable though."
"That's okay, I figured it wouldn't be enough, that's why I also got one of these guys," she said showing the body of the wolf. This made Dr. Brief's eyes go wide. He kept forgetting she was strong enough to pick up a car and knew how to live off the land. He was expecting her to find berries or something.
"This is lovely Gine," said Gohan, "I'll make these into a delicious stew, you go and wash up."
"Okay," said Gine, heading off to the bathroom.
As Gohan began to prepare the stew, he turned to Dr. Briefs.
"I don't know where Gine lived before I took her in. All I know is I found her on the mountainside four years ago. She had no family according to her, and she had nowhere to go, so I took her in, and we quickly became the family neither of us had."
"So the tail's not hereditary then," said Briefs.
"Nope," said Gohan. He turned and got busy with the meat. "She has amazing abilities, and I believe part of that is because she has a tail."
"Maybe she was abandoned because of her tail."
"I don't know," said Gohan. "Gine looked like she had just been through a lot when I met her, but she also said she hadn't had parents for years, so maybe she never knew them."
Dr. Briefs leant back in his seat. "Gine certainly is a fascinating and strange creature, but she's also quite endearing. You're lucky to have her."
Gohan smiled, "I believe the same."
That's that...okay this might take a while. So, for some context: Won and ton are named after Wontons, another type of dumpling. I was debating wether to make Mai's counterpart a guy or a girl, but I figured I'd make 2 of the genders the same, and one different, so they're all guys. Basmati of course is named after another kind of rice. This takes place 30 years before Goku, I figured these would all be the parents of the original guys. If the Pilaf gang is around here, they'd be very little. Heck, Emperor Basmati might be a father already. Should Shu and Mai be born though, I don't know. How are Nanxiang and Bao for wife names? Anyways, stay tuned for the next chapter!
