Bedtime

Hanna getting told about her bedtime in season 2.

David stood from the couch and turned off the tv. "Okay, time for bed."

"What?" Hanna asked. "It's only 9:00."

"And it's your bedtime," Snow said.

Hanna raised her eyebrows at her. "I don't have a bedtime."

Snow reached out her hand towards Hanna. "Come on."

Hanna crossed her arms. "I'm not going to bed."

"Hanna, let's go," David said.

"But you never made me go to bed before."

"I know. I was a little too preoccupied when your mom and sister were gone, but I should have."

"You're a young girl. You need a proper night's rest," Snow told her.

Hanna shook her head. "I've always gone to bed when I wanted to."

"Yes, and do you know how many times you fell asleep during my class because you were so exhausted?"

Hanna avoided her mother's gaze. She knew there were several times when she nodded off in class. No one at the orphanage cared when she went to sleep, so she stayed up past midnight a lot of the time.

"Hanna, listen," Snow sat down beside her and held onto her hand. "I know this is all new to you."

"It's new for us too." David sat down and put his arm around her.

"But we're your parents, and we have to do what's best for you, sweetie."

"I think going to bed whenever I want is what's best for me."

"We're sorry, but that's not going to happen," David said.

"But that's not fair," Hanna whined.

"How about this," Snow said, "you go get ready for bed and you can read one of your books until you're tired."

Hanna looked up at her parents and could tell they weren't going to budge about this bedtime thing. She didn't want to admit it, but she knew she felt a lot better the mornings after she went to bed earlier. Maybe they were right, but she really didn't like being told what to do. At least they were willing to let her read. "Fine." Hanna got up from the couch and walked towards the stairs.

"Do you want us to come tuck you in?" Snow asked.

"No." Hanna went up the stairs and into her room. She would do what they wanted, but she wasn't going to be happy about it.
