The Brooklyn Bridge 1946
[Bing Crosby's "The Way You Look Tonight" plays]
Peggy stood at The Brooklyn Bridge, the cold morning breeze dancing against her cheek.
Someday, when I'm awfully low
She recalled Edwin Jarvis's words as he gave her the vial. "I owe Howard Stark a great deal, but he does not own my integrity."
When the world is cold
"I am quite certain there is only one person in the world who knows what to do with this..." She knew in her heart he was completely right. It's what saved New York, saved Howard Stark, if only she could have saved…
I will feel a glow just thinking of you
She couldn't save Captain America, but she could preserve his legacy, keep fighting in his name, make sure his strength didn't fall in the wrong hands.
And the way you look tonight
Peggy uncorked the last vial of Super soldier blood. Her hands shook a little as she realised this was all that was left of her beloved. This was her final goodbye.
Oh, but you're lovely
A tear ran down her cheek as the blood ran down the vial walls, hurtling into cold icy water, to be lost forever.
With your smile so warm
She recalled the first time they'd met. The skinny little recruit determined to make a change.
And your cheeks so soft
It was funny to view such a horrible time in a nostalgic light, but she couldn't help but remember fondly what she once had and miss what they had lost.
There is nothing for me
This was the end. The end of her hope for Steve Rogers. "Bye, my darling." She whispered for him to hear.
But to love you
"Hi, Peggy." She gave a gasp as she turned and saw an echo from her kid from Brooklyn gave her a soft smile. Peggy thought that he looked perfect-
Just the way you look tonight

Author notes:
This idea/headcanon is definitely not my own but I still wanted to give it a go.
This was meant to be the final chapter of 'The Star Spangled 90 pound asthmatic' as a nice epilogue but I never wrote it in time. (I was also going to write old Steve rogers as Stan Lee but that's more of a headcanon then an actual story)
My next fanfic will be a big one and will also be my first attempt at a romcom. (Kinda wish I released them both around valentines day) Hope you enjoy!
