When Arizona woke up the next morning she rolled over to snuggle into Lynzee but realized her bed was empty. She listened for a minute thinking maybe Lynzee was already up and working out but didn't hear anything throughout the house so she got up, grabbed her robe, and made her way through the house but didn't see Lynzee anywhere. Rebecca never got back with Lynzee the night before and Lynzee had seemed on edge, not knowing if Rebecca had received her message or not.
Why the fuck isn't she answering her phone?! Arizona recalled Lynzee saying last night. She'd never seen her so stressed out and it was making Arizona on edge not knowing where she was. Arizona went back to her bedroom and grabbed her phone. Arizona rolled her eyes at herself when she realized she should have checked her phoned first. She had a couple text messages on her phone from Lynzee that were 30 minutes old. The first message Lynzee had sent her was an article from TMZ titled, "Lynzee… I am your father" and had a photo of Lynzee and the unexpected visitor Lynzee had received the day before. The other text message said she had gone to find Rebecca since she wasn't answering her calls and would be home after a while.
"Oh no…" Arizona said as she clicked on the link for the TMZ article. Arizona read through the article quickly which seemed like it was mostly click bait. It didn't have any quotes in it from Lynzee's supposed father. It only mentioned a source who had explained Lynzee's long lost father had come back into Lynzee's life recently and that Lynzee wanted no part of the relationship. Arizona shook her head. She knew Rebecca had to be behind this. Arizona closed the article and tried to call Lynzee but it just went to voicemail. Arizona navigated to her contacts on her phone and tried calling Rebecca herself. She was surprised when she picked up.
"Arizona! Sweetie! How are you?" Rebecca beamed.
Arizona scowled her face and looked at her phone a moment to make sure she had clicked the right name on her phone and then rolled her eyes when she confirmed she had in deed dialed Rebecca's number.
"Listen, bitch. I know it was you. You are the only person who could have leaked that story to the paparazzi and—"
Rebecca cut Arizona off, "I'm really hurts that you both think that I would do something like that. As I was just telling Lynzee, I would never do anything to hurt her like that."
"Oh give it a rest, I don't buy your bullshit for a second. You would do anything to ensure Lynzee is still in the news, whether it's good or bad. You think we don't realize you're always the 'source' whenever someone in the press has something to say?"
"Arizona, there are a lot of people around Lynzee constantly. Any one of them could talk to the media anonymously whenever they so choose, I can't control that. As for this latest article, for all I know it was her dad that leaked the story!"
"He's not my fucking father!" Lynzee yelled in the background.
"Put Lynzee on the phone," Arizona demanded.
"You know… you both have a lot of nerve coming at me like this. I don't have to take this kind of harassment. I could quit you know."
"Go ahead, Rebecca, I don't care anymore, I'm fucking exhausted with having to deal with this kind of shit from you!" Lynzee yelled.
"You won't quit because you need Lynzee too much," Arizona rebutted. "You're like a leech!"
Lynzee continued, "You know what Rebecca, I'll do you one better. You're fucking fired."
"You can't fire me!" Rebecca yelled as the call ended.
Arizona tried Lynzee's number again. It rang a couple times and then went to voicemail.
"Dammit!" Arizona paced around the house. She didn't like not knowing what was going on. Rebecca could be capable of anything. Would she try to hurt Lynzee. It had just occurred to Arizona she didn't even know where Rebecca lived.
About forty minutes later Lynzee came in the door. Arizona ran up to her and wrapped her arms around her.
"Thank God you're okay!"
Lynzee hugged Arizona and rubbed her back gently, "Of course I'm okay."
Arizona pushed away from Lynzee, "Why the Hell didn't you answer the phone or call me back?! I thought she was going to hurt you or something!"
"I had to turn off my phone cause I'm getting bombarded with messages and calls to comment on this fucking story."
"You left this morning without saying anything! I was worried!"
"I'm sorry, I woke up early and just wanted to deal with this, you were asleep, I didn't see the sense in waking you," Lynzee reached for Arizona and pulled her back into an embrace. "I'm sorry I worried you."
"What happened after you told her she was fired? She hung up the phone and I didn't hear anything after that."
"Technically she didn't hang up. She actually threw the phone at me, but because she's a worse pitcher than she is agent if you can imagine, she didn't hit me like she intended. It hit the wall and shattered, so that's probably how the call ended."
"That bitch is fucking crazy! We should call the police."
"It's fine babe it's done. I left after that, she didn't hurt me. It's fine."
"She didn't grovel to get her job back?"
"No, she actually threatened me. She said if I fired her it was a breach of our contract, which okay fine so I'll have to pay her a severance or whatever, I think I can afford it, and then she said I'd regret it. I told her the only thing I regretted was having not done it sooner than now, and I walked out. And then I think I heard something else break after I closed the door so… my guess is she's doing a clean up on aisle five right now."
"You probably need to get ahold of Chris and let him know to be on the lookout for Rebecca."
"Oh yeah, good call. Also, his paychecks will start coming directly from me now instead of Rebecca."
"Why would they come from Rebecca?"
"Cause she was paying for them."
"Then why weren't they being paid directly from you?"
"I don't know babe, cause I don't like math and money and I just didn't want to mess with that stuff, so Rebecca said she'd handle it. I would pay her more than her usual fee and then she would use the extra money to pay those guys."
"Lynz, you need to call the bank right now."
"It's Sunday… they're closed."
"Then we go there first thing in the morning. Do you have a financial planner or someone that looks over your accounts?"
"Rebecca did all that."
"Babe!"
"You think she was stealing?"
"I wouldn't put it past her!"
Lynzee threw her head back exasperated, "I'm such an idiot."
"You're not an idiot. You're just a really great person who trusted the wrong one. It was a mistake, but we're going to fix all of this okay?"
"You think that's what she meant when she said that I'd regret firing her?"
"I don't know what she meant. I'm actually concerned she means something else. Like, harming you in some way, like physically."
"Well now you got me worried she might hurt you cause that would hurt me and you both. Two birds, one stone."
"Call Chris and let him know what's going on. Tomorrow, we go to the bank and get that all sorted and we'll go from there okay?"
"Okay. Thank you."
"You're welcome. I love you. We'll get through this, I promise."
"I love you too, Arizona." Lynzee stood there looking at Arizona with a pained look on her face.
"What is it?"
"What about the other thing?"
"How would you feel about me going to talk to him?"
Lynzee's body tensed up at the thought of Arizona going to talk to this stranger.
"If you're not comfortable with it I completely understand, but I could take Chris with me if you're worried about safety."
"It's not just that… I just…"
"I know… if you don't want me to I won't, but as someone you trust and love… and someone you know is only looking out for you and your best interest, I would do that for you."
"Let me think on it okay?"
"Of course, take your time."
The next day Arizona went to the bank with Lynzee and they were both relieved to find out Rebecca had not been siphoning money out of Lynzee's accounts as Arizona had feared. However, they did learn from Chris and Jason that the amount Rebecca had told Lynzee she was paying for their services was significantly more than what Chris as Jason were being paid. It seemed because Rebecca had been paying Chris and Jason through her she was skimming off the additional cost to herself. Arizona also helped Lynzee get set up with a financial advisor to assist with her accounts going forward.
Jason dropped off Lynzee at T-Mobile Stadium so she could go meet up with the team doctors. She was getting ready to head down to Tacoma for her rehab assignment and needed to check-in with them before she met up with the Rainiers for their next series against the Las Vegas Aviators. After Jason dropped off Lynzee, he took Arizona to The Edgewater Hotel to meet up with Lynzee's unwanted guest. Lynzee had decided to let Arizona go find out more information as long as Arizona agreed to let Chris go with her. Jason pulled into the circle drive and dropped them off at the front. Chris got out of the passenger seat and opened the door for Arizona and she climbed out and walked into the building with Chris as they both headed to the lobby together.
"How are we going to find out his name and room or anything?"
"Let me worry about that, and just let me do the talking okay?"
"Oh, yeah sure of course!" Arizona looked up at Chris and was glad she was on his side. He was kind of scary but she always felt like he was a giant teddy bear.
Chris walked up to the front desk and was greeted by a slender clean cut gentleman.
"Welcome to The Edgewater, what's the name on the reservation?"
"No reservation," Chris pulled a picture from the TMZ article out of his sport coat jacket pocket and slid it across the top of the desk. "We understand this gentleman is staying here. He asked us to reach out to him. We need his room number please."
"I'm sorry, The Edgewater Hotel is not in the business of divulging the information of its guests to non-guests."
Arizona was a little defeated. She understood but he didn't have to be such a smug ass about it. She thought that was going to be the end of it and looked to Chris for guidance who remained calm and without saying anything removed his wallet from his back jean pocket and removed five $100 bills and slowly laid each one down on top of the other on the desk.
"Sir, no amount of money is going to make me change my mind."
"Is Frank working today?" Chris calmly asked.
The man at the front desk seemed a little surprised Chris mentioned someone he must have known. Who was Frank, Arizona wondered? Did we like Frank?
"Just a moment, please."
Arizona watched as the man left the front desk area and headed to an office area and it sounded like he was talking to someone, possibly Frank? Arizona waited and watched as he returned.
"Mr. Holtz will be down shortly."
A moment later the elevator dinged and a very flamboyant, very well dressed man came out of the elevator and with arms wide open said, "Oh my God, Christian!"
Arizona watched as Chris smiled and hugged and was kissed on each cheek by this guy Arizona imagined was Frank.
"How are you darling? You look fabulous! You do not come and visit as often! What can I do for you?! And who is this lovely? Don't tell me you're playing for the other team now?!"
"Frank, this is Dr. Arizona Robbins. Dr. Robbins, this is Frank Holtz, manager of The Edgewater Hotel. No Frank, Dr. Robbins is the girlfriend of a client."
"Ah, well, so lovely to meet you Dr. Robbins," Frank said embracing Arizona's hands gently. "Any friend of Christian's is a friend of mine. So, Christian, darling. What do I owe the pleasure?"
Chris grabbed the photo from the front desk and handed it to Frank who looked at it briefly and gasped as he put his hand over his mouth.
"Is your client Lynzee Miller?! Oh my God it is! And you're her girlfriend! Oh my God I am so fangirl-ing right now!"
"Apparently this guy said he was staying here. Have you seen him? Have a name? Room number?"
"Just a moment," Frank moved over behind the counter and went to the computer and was typing away furiously. As Frank was busy working on the computer looking up the guest information the other guy who was rude before stood behind Frank trying not to look pathetic. Chris looked directly at him as he casually grabbed his $500 and put it back in his wallet and put his wallet away. The guy behind Frank looked bummed as he just realized he lost out on $500 for nothing. "Okay, here we are! Mr. Everett Jackson is in room 417! It looks like he last swiped into his room late last night and hasn't left yet this morning so you should be in luck if you go on up!"
"Thank you, Frank. I owe you one."
"Uh huh, you do. I'll take 4 Mariners tickets and an autograph and photo op."
"I think I can arrange that."
"Oh my God, I love you! Caio!"
Chris smiled and guided Arizona to the elevator.
"I didn't know your name was Christian," Arizona said quietly as they headed into the elevator.
"It's not, it's Christopher but Frank can call me anything he likes, as long as he keeps giving me information when I ask for it."
Arizona laughed and Chris smiled.
"Okay, now it's my turn," Arizona said. "You let me do the talking this time, got it?"
"Yes ma'am!"
They reached the fourth floor and headed to room 417. Arizona knocked lightly and Chris stepped over to the side so he wouldn't be seen through the peep hole. Arizona waited a moment as she heard someone come to the door and then watched the door open slowly.
"Dr. Robbins, good morning," Mr. Jackson said as he opened the door wider. "Won't you please come in? Is Lynzee with you?"
Chris stepped in front of the door and Mr. Jackson stepped back a bit.
"Don't worry," Arizona said. "He won't bite, but Lynzee insisted he come with me."
"Oh, uh… of course. Please, come on in, both of you," Mr. Jackson stepped back and moved over to the small table in the room and cleared off some clothes off of the bed in an attempt to clean the place up a little. "Please feel free to sit down."
Chris stood by the door, as Arizona moved over to the other chair at the table and Mr. Jackson sat down across from her.
"Would you like any coffee? I could make some."
"Oh no, thank you though," Arizona said politely.
"I know it probably wasn't appropriate or ideal for me to show up at your house, and I do apologize for that but I knew there would never be an opportunity for me to see her at a game. At least not up front."
"Mr. Jackson…"
"Please, call me Everett."
"Everett… Lynzee is really having a hard time with all of this. I mean, how are you so sure that you are her father?"
"I never meant to cause her any harm. Whether that was twenty plus years ago or now. I've been following her career for a long time though, but I've not been in the right place to ever feel like I was good enough to reach out to her. I'll admit, at least what I can remember anyway, I knocked up her mom and whether her mom threw me out or I left, I can't really say. We were both on a lot of drugs back then and I wasn't the nicest human being. After I knew Chloe must have had the baby, I went to visit her and she said she left it there in the hospital because she was in no condition to be a mother. I was furious, beat the shit out of her and then went to jail. When I went to jail I vowed I'd get clean so I could get my baby back but it was hard to get off the drugs, even in jail. You'd think you could get clean there right? Well let me tell you. It's easier to get drugs in jail than it is on the streets. By the time I got out I was strung out again and knew I couldn't be a father. I figured wherever Lynzee was had to have been better than anything I could give her. Apparently that's not the case, at least that's what I've read anyway. By the time I finally got clean for good Lynzee was in college. I went to a few games, watched from afar but never had the guts to insert myself. I'm in a better place now. I've been going to narcotics anonymous meetings for the last year or so. I have a solid job these days. I don't want anything from Lynzee. I meant what I said before. I didn't come out of the woodwork looking for a hand out or money. I'm just trying to make amends. If I can't do that, I understand. But I had to at least try."
"Wow, you've definitely been through a lot. But so has Lynzee. I can't even say if she would even entertain the idea of doing any kind of test to find out. Lynzee has made it clear she does not want to pursue any kind of relationship. I can't guarantee anything, all I can do is tell her what you told me and see what she wants to do."
"I understand. I don't expect anything, certainly not for her to forgive me. I just want her to understand. It's not an excuse, but an explanation. There's nothing I could ever do to fix it, that's for damn sure." Everett got up and headed over to the nightstand next to the bed and grabbed the notepad and pen that were on top of the Bible. He scribbled down a phone number and handed it to Arizona. "I'll be here one more night and then I'm headed back down to Oakland. If she changes her mind about anything please let me know. Or if you just want to give her my number and she decides she wants to talk or text or whatever. Like I said, I also get it if I never hear or see you again. Well I imagine I'll see you, but you won't see me. Kid's pretty big in the major league huh? Who would have thought. Deadbeat dad and shitty mom put together a great kid with a killer arm apparently. Must have been something in those drugs you think?"
Arizona felt awkward about his weird joke, "Thank you for taking the time to sit down with me and provide some more insight on all of this. It was definitely a surprise. Again, I can't promise anything."
"I understand. I appreciate you stopping by."
Arizona got up and headed out with Chris. Neither one said anything until the elevator doors closed.
"Do you think he was telling the truth?" Arizona asked.
Chris wasn't smiling anymore like he was on the elevator ride up, "Unfortunately, I do."
