Arizona's phone rang early the next morning and she rolled over and grabbed it off the charger on the nightstand, it was Lynzee calling.
"Hey, good morning. How are you feeling?"
"I'm starting to feel like I've been hit by a truck."
"That bad huh? Are they giving you anything?"
"Yeah they gave me some painkillers to help this morning. I woke up in a lot of pain so they put some stuff in my IV to help. I'm trying to get discharged but they're taking their sweet time."
"Please don't rush it babe, I'd rather have you all better."
"I think I'll be headed back today but I'm not sure on the time yet."
"I'll be at the hospital today, any chance they'd bring you straight to the hospital from the airport so Amelia can take a look at you?"
"I think that's the plan. Ugh, I wish they'd stop showing the damn thing on tv. It's embarrassing."
"Yeah, once was enough for me."
"So…" Lynzee talked quieter, "What are you wearing?"
"Oh my God, stop," Arizona laughed. "You need to get better woman."
Lynzee sighed, "You know what will make me better…"
"Uh huh, well you're going to have to wait."
"That's not exactly one of my strengths."
"Well it sounds like you need some practice then, and this will be good for you."
"Keep it up, I'm just gonna make you pay for it when I get back in town."
"I'm counting on it."
"Hey, hold on a sec," Lynzee said and Arizona could hear her talking to someone, she guessed Rebecca. "No, I don't want to stay here another day! If the team docs want me evaluated any further I'll get checked out at Grey Sloan back home. Just figure it out I don't care if I have to fly Spirit, get me back to Seattle today." Arizona could hear Lynzee come back to the phone. "Sorry about that."
"Everything okay?"
Lynzee sighed, "Rebecca feels like I should stay here another day just to double-check everything is on the up-and-up before I fly 3,000 miles at 37,000 feet."
"Well what did the doctor say?"
"The doctor said I could fly."
"Okay, so then why does Rebecca think she knows better than the doctor?"
"Because Rebecca knows everything babe, haven't you figured that out yet?" Lynzee said sarcastically as she sighed again, "Seriously, she's driving me crazy."
"Tell her to leave babe, she can still be your agent and not be with you 24/7."
"Yeah, I know."
"You're not going to say anything are you?"
"No, I don't want to hurt her feelings. She really is just trying to be helpful."
"Uh huh"
"What"
"I told you how I feel about her."
"And I told you I don't think of her that way."
"I'm not worried about you babe, I don't trust her."
"Do you trust me?"
"Yes, of course."
"Then trust me that if I ever felt like she was crossing the line, I'd put a stop to it, okay?" Lynzee pleaded.
"Okay. I should get going, I need to get ready for work."
"Arizona…"
"Yeah?"
"Are you mad?"
"No, I just need to get ready. I'll see you later I hope?"
"I'll do everything I can to get on a flight back home today."
"Okay. I love you. Let me know if you're coming to the hospital when you get in."
"Alright. I love you too. Bye babe."
"Bye." Arizona hung up.
Hours later Arizona was scrubbing out of a surgery when Amelia stopped by.
"Hey are you about done? I'm heading down to talk to your girlfriend, you want to come?"
"She's here?! I never got a text! Yes, give me a minute I'm almost done." Arizona quickly finished and the two headed down to the exam rooms.
Rebecca of course was standing in the room busy on her phone as usual as Lynzee sat on the bed flipping through a magazine. As Arizona entered the room with Amelia, Lynzee looked up and made eye contact with Arizona and the two smiled. Lynzee slowly started to get up but Arizona rushed over to her before she could and wrapped her arms around her. Arizona could see some scratches and bruising on Lynzee's face and arms. Lynzee inhaled deeply taking in all of Arizona as she held her closely. Arizona put Lynzee's face in her hands and looked her over.
"I'm glad you're okay."
"I'm glad I'm here."
"I thought you were going to text me if you were headed here."
Lynzee spoke loud enough so everyone in the room could hear, Rebecca included, "I didn't have a charger at the hospital and it died on the plane. Someone was supposed to text you for me but I guess they forgot."
Rebecca looked up from her phone, "I'm sorry were you talking to me? I was answering an email."
"Does she need to be here?" Arizona asked quietly.
"Definitely not," Lynzee whispered.
"Dr. Shepherd, you need to examine Ms. Miller privately for doctor patient confidentiality right?" Arizona asked Amelia.
Amelia was quick to pick up on Arizona's subtle hinting towards Rebecca.
Amelia began nodding, "Yes! Absolutely, uh Ms… we'll let you know when we're done." Amelia escorted Rebecca out of the room.
"Wait!" Rebecca protested. "I need to be here! Lynzee!"
Amelia shut the door and closed the blinds. "Okay that solves that problem."
Arizona sat down next to Lynzee on the bed and held her hand.
"Okay," Amelia began, "So, G.W. sent over your scans this morning and I took a look. Everything looks okay on the scan they ran last night but I'd feel better about running my own scan here. Also, I want to ensure there were no developments. Also, I think Linc wants to do a full x-ray to make sure everything is good on his end too, so I'll give you two some time, you can get undressed and into a gown and we'll get you scanned and hopefully out of here as quickly as possible!"
"Thanks Amelia," Arizona said as Amelia headed out of the room.
"Alone at last," Lynzee said pulling Arizona in close. "I missed you."
Arizona kissed Lynzee gently and Lynzee started to kiss back slightly aggressively. Arizona pulled back, "Easy there, tiger. We need to get you scanned and make sure you're all good first."
"I'm fine, I promise. I feel okay, just sore."
"Okay…" Arizona leaned in and whispered in Lynzee's ear, "well, I'll feel better about making you cum when I know I'm not going to hurt you by doing it." Arizona took Lynzee's earlobe in her mouth and sucked.
Lynzee exhaled sharply and cocked a half-smile as the shivers ran through her body.
"Alright, alright!" Lynzee got up and started to undress. As she took her shirt off Arizona could see more of the extent of her injuries. She had bruising all over her front ribs and backside.
Arizona lightly touched Lynzee's body where her bruises were, "Babe…"
"It's okay, it's not that bad."
Arizona handed Lynzee the gown and she put it on. Amelia knocked and came in with a wheelchair.
"A wheelchair, really?"
"Just get in and enjoy the free ride," Arizona said, guiding Lynzee into the wheelchair.
About an hour later, Dr. Callie Torres and Amelia walked into Lynzee's room.
Arizona, surprised to see her ex, sat up and Lynzee, who had fallen asleep in Arizona's arms on the bed awoke.
"Callie, what are you doing here? I thought Linc was taking a look at Lynzee's x-rays."
"Yeah, he got caught up in an emergency surgery. It's good to see you too, Arizona." Callie said a little cooly.
"Callie, I didn't mean it like that, I was just surprised to see you is all."
"Well, while I may not have the same background in professional baseball Dr. Lincoln has, I am still a leading orthopedic surgeon in this hospital."
Arizona rolled her eyes and Lynzee inserted herself into the awkward exchange, "Hi. Uh… so you have my results? All good? I can go home?"
"You can go home," Amelia smiled.
"Awesome," Lynzee started to get up.
"But…" Callie cut in. "You have two non-displaced fractures in your ribs, so you're going to have to take it easy for a while and you'll likely be on the injured list for a little bit longer than originally anticipated."
"Damn," Lynzee said, "I guess that's why its been hurting when I breathe."
"It's been hurting to breathe and you haven't said anything until now?" Arizona asked.
"I don't know, I figured it was just kind of normal considering."
"Oh my gosh, if you weren't already hurt, I'd hurt you myself."
Callie interrupted, "You're uh, friend out there has been harassing the staff asking for updates, should we send her in now that you'll be leaving soon?"
Lynzee looked at Arizona, "If you must. I'd rather she harass me than the staff."
"It was really nice meeting you in person," Callie said as she and Amelia left the room.
"You too, doc. Thank you."
"Give me a minute, okay?" Arizona said as she headed out the room following Callie.
"Callie!"
Callie turned around and Amelia headed over to the nurses station.
"What's up?"
"I'm sorry about earlier, I really didn't mean anything, I just was surprised, is all."
"It's fine, Arizona, really. It was good to see you."
"Yeah… you too." The two lingered for a moment and then Arizona said, "Well, I should get going."
"Yeah… okay… take care, Arizona."
"You too, Callie."
Arizona headed back into Lynzee's room. Lynzee was just finishing tying her shoelaces.
"So… what was all that?" Lynzee asked.
"What was all what?"
"You and the other doctor."
Arizona played innocent, "What do you mean?"
"Nothing. Forget it." Lynzee stood up and headed for the door.
"Lynz…"
Lynzee turned towards Arizona, "Yeah?"
"We briefly dated."
"How long is brief?"
"Almost a year, but that was over 3 years ago, we wanted different things so it didn't work out."
"What things?"
Rebecca ran into the room, "Finally! They said I could come and see you! I heard you're getting out, we should get you home to rest. What's the verdict?"
Arizona and Lynzee kept eye contact, both ignoring Rebecca.
"Hello?" Rebecca announced. "Anyone?"
"I'm taking Lynzee back to my place." Arizona said.
Lynzee looked at Rebecca, "Head is fine. I have two broken ribs. Can you call Keith and let him know?"
Lynzee and Arizona headed out of the room and left Rebecca in the room. As they headed out of the hospital a few reporters were standing by waiting.
"Lynzee, what's the report?"
"Are you okay? Will you be joining the team tonight against Houston?"
Lynzee and Arizona put their heads down and headed towards Arizona's car and made their way out of the hospital parking lot.
"I'll take you to your place first so you can grab some stuff but you're going to stay with me for a while okay?"
"You don't have to put me up at your place."
"Well your place doesn't have any furniture, or food I'm betting, and I'm not leaving your side. Not up for negotiation, okay?"
Lynzee cocked a half-smile. "You're the boss."
"You're God damn right I am."
Arizona and Lynzee had the game on the tv while they sat together and ate pizza. Lynzee grabbed the remote and muted the tv and put down her slice.
"So what were the different things you and your ex wanted that it didn't work out."
"Kids."
"Oh." Lynzee paused a beat. "You want kids?"
"No, I don't. That was the problem..."
"Huh."
"You want kids don't you?" Arizona asked, worried.
"No, actually... I'm just uh... surprised you don't. You're... a pediatric surgeon, isn't that your jam?"
"That's exactly why I don't want kids. I deal with kids everyday who are sick and sometimes die and parents who are a wreck and it's awful and I don't want that. I don't need that kind of stress and anxiety in my life. I like my life the way it is, and I don't want it to change. I want to be able to go on a vacation whenever the thought moves me. Wait, you don't want kids either?"
"Getting pregnant isn't exactly on my bucket list. Not to mention I wouldn't be able to play for like... forever... I just don't have any desire. Don't get me wrong, I love kids, I think they're great but I had a horrible childhood. I try not to think about it at all, and I feel like having a kid of my own I'd be constantly reminded of trauma and experiences I don't want to rehash day in and day out."
Arizona reached up and touched Lynzee's cheek and brushed her thumb down the side of her face.
"I'm sorry you had to go through a rough childhood."
"Do you still have feelings for your ex?"
"Callie was very special, I'm not going to lie. I really loved her, and I thought we would spend forever together, but we wanted different things and because of that we grew apart. I went to Africa for three years and she had a baby with her best friend, so, we both moved on. She got what she wanted and so did I."
"Wait so, over 3 years ago you ended your relationship with your ex, and then went to Africa for 3 years? So… I told you I don't do math but…"
"I broke up with Callie, went to Africa shortly thereafter, came back after the 3 year stint, and met you a month later."
"So, this is all kind of raw."
"None of it changes the way I feel about you, I promise. I do love you. It's not like I didn't get any information while I was away. I heard about Callie and Mark while I was in Africa, so I've had time to adjust to that information, I just don't see Callie in person everyday."
"Do you think she still loves you?"
"I don't know, babe. I doubt it. It's been a long time, and she and Mark are happy with their daughter. Mark didn't really have a family so, he has one now. You have nothing to worry about, okay? I love you."
"I love you too, I trust you."
Arizona caught Lynzee's image on the tv screen and grabbed the remote and unmuted it, "Look they're talking about you."
"Oh great, I have to watch this crap again." Lynzee and Arizona watched as they showed the replay of her collision at first base from the other day, yet again.
We did get word today that Lynzee Miller was checked out locally here in Seattle and it was determined she has two non-displaced rib bone fractures which will unfortunately extend her time on the IL. Sources close to Lynzee have expressed she was frustrated with the diagnosis but also grateful there was nothing more serious found and will be taking it easy so she can make as quick a recovery as she can.
"I don't recall you saying anything to anyone," Arizona said as she turned the volume back down.
"Probably Rebecca. Her philosophy is, if they're still talking about me, I'm still relevant. She'd put bad news out there about me just so they're still talking about me," Lynzee said jokingly.
"Doesn't that bother you?"
"I was mostly kidding, I mean… it hasn't happened yet so… look I know you don't trust her, but I… for the most part do."
"Sounds like you have reservations."
"I have trust issues in general so the fact that she hasn't broken my trust yet, I'm still okay with her doing what she needs to do to get the job done."
Arizona raised an eyebrow, "Need I remind you she lied to you about me when we first met."
Lynzee hung her head, "You're never going to let that go are you?"
"She blocked me!"
"She didn't know you!"
"I can't believe you're defending her…" Arizona said softly.
"I'm not defending her, I'm just…" Lynzee threw her head back and let out a heavy sigh, "I try to put myself in her shoes in that scenario. She's holding my phone, gets a text, she responds with a thumbs up, which was kind of rude, she blocks the number…" Lynzee trailed off.
Arizona looks at Lynzee, "And…"
"Okay, I see your point… She hasn't broken it since then…"
Arizona's voice got soft and quiet, "You know… you say you have trust issues but I think you're being awful trusting of Rebecca. I just don't want to see you get hurt by her."
"I know you have your reservations and I respect your opinion and I trust you completely, but you've got to trust me too. I'm keeping an eye on Rebecca, I promise. I appreciate that you're looking out for me. If no one else in this world has my back, I know you do."
"Always."
A/N: Okay, so before Chapter 3 I said there was no Calzona history... my intention behind that was not necessarily to say they had never been in a relationship, I apologize if that was misleading. What I meant to imply was there was not the full elaborate Calzona history as we know it from canon. There is SOME Calzona history (as explained this chapter). I did want Callie in this story at some point and this was where the story was taking my brain so here we are, love it or hate it.
