Walking through the door to the staffroom she hoped she appeared relaxed despite her heart pounding in her chest. Trying her best to focus on something else she begins to do her hair, twisting it up like she'd done so many times before. Only once her hair was up did she glance at her reflection in the mirror and sigh before placing the lipstick in her locker into her pocket. As much as she always more makeup to work, it was just part of the uniform really, she never kept any on her but today was different. She didn't need anyone questioning her, this was safer. Or so she hoped anyway.
Walking into admin she glances around her, expecting to see Charlie walking towards her but she was wrong. Only then did she realise it was her name on the board as the nurse running the shift. She could have sworn he was in today? Still rather than question it she breathes a sigh of relief, the pounding in her chest reducing greatly. The last thing she needed was Charlie, he could read her too well in ways her newer colleagues never could. As much as they were a great bunch they were just colleagues, they didn't know her or much about her, she was just their bosses friend he'd insisted on getting back. She's a mystery and one they didn't seem too intent on solving, something she was happy to leave that way. Although despite this she knew if she'd walked in today with a split lip Eve would never have let her off without inquiring about it. Just as well she was away wasn't it?
He was supposed to be updating notes but the figure in front of him was proving distracting as she reaches up on her tip toes to get something out of the unit. He can't quite hide the grin taking over his face as his eyes wander, his imagination wandering with it. He knew he should behave, she was married with he presumed young children but he was only human. There was something about her, something enchanting that pulled him in and he didn't just mean her figure (although christ that was something) but those eyes of hers. He wasn't sure if he'd ever met anyone who could look into your soul the way she seemed to. She didn't need to utter a word, just look at him and he was hooked. Mentally berating himself he tries to focus just as she turns round to face him. Good timing. He opens his mouth to update her on her favourite patient, the prisoner, when he realises something was different, frowning he steps forward.
"Christ Duffy what did you do to your lip?" He asks, reaching out to her.
Those wide searching eyes were back, staring right at him. "Oh nothing, just an accident."
That wasn't answering his question, frowning a little more he tries again. "A patient didn't do that did they?" She hadn't been thumped and not told someone had she?
Forcing her usual smile, one she was confident he'd fall for, she shakes her head. "Oh god no, my youngest." She starts with what she hoped was a knowing smile. "I was trying to tie his shoes and yeah...Just an accident."
"Ouch!" He replies with a grimace, now paying more attention to her complexion as he checks for bruising hidden under her makeup. "Did you get someone to check it? Did it need a stitch?"
Rolling her eyes she shakes her head. "I have told you my husband is a doctor haven't I Max?" She laughs. "Don't fuss, it's nothing."
Smiling now, more reassured, he lets out a little laugh. "Sorry, bad habit."
Only once he'd left admin, leaving her alone at the board did she let out the breath she was holding. She had to be careful now, she couldn't have them suspecting anything. Not that she intended to upset her husband so much again, her emotions had got the better of her after finding that letter, she forget herself. It wouldn't happen again, she told herself anyway.
