Chapter One: Neighbors

"Hey cuz are you sure you sure you don't need my help?" Gill asks as he comes outside while Alexis is trying to put together a pool.

"I'm sure Gill. Thanks anyway." Alexis says.

"No problem." Gill says as he goes inside.

"Ugh. Why won't this darn thing stay up?" Alexis asks frustratedly from being unable to get the pool to stay together.

"Uh what are you doing?" A female voice asks.

"Who said that?" Alexis asks as she looks around .

"I did. Who are you and what are you doing?" A red haired girl with a moon barrette says by the fence.

"I'm Alexis. I'm Gill's cousin. I moved in with him recently because my parents are out of town for the summer." Alexis says as she stands up.

"That's cool. I thought you were a friend of his." The girl says.

"No. I'm his cousin. Anyway I'm trying to put up this stupid pool. Gill was wanting to go swimming later this evening and I volunteered to to put the pull up for him." Alexis says as she gestures to the pool.

"How's that going for you?" The girl asks curiously.

"Not well. Starting to wish I kept my mouth shut. These instructions don't make any sense." Alexis says frustratedly as she hands the girl the instructions.

"Why didn't you let Gill help you when he offered?" The girl asks.

"Because no offense to my cousin but he's not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer." Alexis says.

"Oh. Yeah I get what you mean." The girl says as she chuckles.

"And plus I told him I didn't need any help. So I wanna stick to that." Alexis says.

"Don't wanna admit you need help?" The girl asks.

"Possibly." Alexis says as she blushes and looks away.

"No worries. I'm like that too sometimes. You know I can help with that." The girl says as she comes around the fence to Alexis.

"Unless you can make sense of these instructions I'm not sure you can." Alexis says as the girl looks at the instructions.

"I can help. Just wait there a moment." The girl says as she leaves before some robots quickly come toward Alexis as the girl walks behind them.

"What are those things!?" Alexis asks in alarm.

"Don't worry. They're my robots. My sister and I built them ourselves. We built them to help us with projects or occasionally around the house." The girl says as she holds up a remote.

"Okay but how are they going to help?" Alexis asks curiously.

"Watch this. Robots build pool." The girl says as the robots quickly make short work of building the pool.

"Whoa. That was fast. And the pool is pretty sturdy looking." Alexis says in surprise.

"Told you I could help. Thank you robots that will be all." The girl says as the robots leave.

"That was pretty impressive." Alexis says as she smiles.

"Thanks." The girl says happily as she smiles.

"Thank you for the assist. Um I never did catch your name." Alexis says.

"It's Mary. Mary Test. My sister is Susan Test. We look a lot alike but you can always identify us by our hair barrettes. I always wear a moon barrette while my sister wears a star one." The girl says as she gestures to her barrette.

"What was that!?" Alexis asks in alarm as she and Mary hear a loud crash from the other side of the fence.

"Probably my little brother Johnny doing something stupid and dangerous... Again. He does stuff like that all the time with his talking dog Dukey." Mary says as she shrugs.

"Talking dog?" Alexis asks curiously.

"A little side experiment. Made him more human like. Nothing more." Mary says.

"Oh. That's pretty impressive." Alexis says.

"Thanks." Mary says.

"Hey um I should go let Gill know that the pool is done but um would you want to come over and swim sometime?" Alexis asks curiously.

"Sure. That sounds nice. Maybe you can come over sometime and I can show you some of my other inventions." Mary says as she smiles.

"Sure but to be fair I'm not much of a science person in terms of understanding it." Alexis says shyly.

"That's okay. I can explain things to you and show you how they work if you'd like." Mary says.

"I'd like that. Well see you around Mary." Alexis says kindly.

"You too Alexis and welcome to the neighborhood." Mary says as Alexis watches her leave before going inside the house.
