Infallible Logic
"I will think about it," Mother was saying politely when Itachi rounded the corner, finding her in the aisle of the canned goods.
She was speaking to another woman, who was wearing her dark brown hair in a high ponytail. While mother carried that polite smile she only wore when she wasn't interested in the conversation, the other woman looked delighted, smiling widely.
"Thank you very much, Uchiha-san. My daughter would love nothing more than to have him join her and the others!" she gushed before she checked her watch and blanched slightly. "Oh, I'm terribly sorry, but I have to go. I had almost forgotten that I still have an appointment! You have a nice day, Uchiha-san!"
She hurried away; her heels click-clacking on the tiled floor of the supermarket.
Mother pursed her lips, but she relaxed when Itachi came to stand next to her. She glanced at the box of cereals he carried with him and nodded for him to put it in the shopping cart, which he did.
Curiosity unable to be retained any longer, he asked, "Who was that?"
"The mother of one of your brother's classmates," Mother replied and her next exhale was measured as she steered the shopping cart further down the aisle. "Apparently her daughter would love nothing more than to have Sasuke over for a sleepover."
"Otouto is quite popular already, hm?" he smiled amused.
They had moved to this town three months ago, but obviously his little brother had already left quite the impression on his classmates. This woman hadn't been the first one to approach either mother or father to discuss playdates between their children and Sasuke and would most certainly not be the last one. Especially since Sasuke had presented as an Alpha on his ninth birthday; his Status had only managed to skyrocket his popularity even further, though Sasuke was far from happy with that.
As a matter of fact Sasuke had been quite vocal several times already what he thought about these potential playdates and he definitely did not have positive feelings towards them. Itachi was amused by that, but he also understood Sasuke's frustration. When Itachi had been younger, a lot of his own classmates in their old school had also been very eager to invite him over for sleepovers or playdates in the afternoon. He had declined each and every one of them, because he hadn't wanted to give them false hope. Admittedly at times their persistence had been quite aggravating and even Itachi's patience – "Better than that of a saint," Shisui liked to tease – had been dangerously worn thin sometimes.
Now that he was older the offer of sleepovers hadn't lessened in the slightest, though they had obviously become different in nature – or it was better to say that the girls had become incredibly bold, being very clear that they had a different form of sleeping in mind. Rejecting their advances – some more sexual than others – was equally as tiresome as the offers in primary school had been to be honest.
So he could definitely understand Sasuke's frustration, but as his older brother he couldn't help but be quite amused by it as well, because it was just so much fun teasing his otouto about his popularity.
"Don't tease him about that," Mother chided, but she was smiling.
He shrugged unrepented. "I'm his older brother," he said simply and eyed her as she started putting canned peas in the cart. "Are you going to send him to that sleepover?"
"And deal with his outburst if I even dared to suggest that?" She clucked her tongue and steered the cart towards the sauces area. "I know he isn't interested in such a thing and I'm not going to force him. If he doesn't want to attend one, he won't. I don't even understand what that woman hoped to gain by telling me about it. I'm certain that her daughter already asked Sasuke and the answer was no."
And that was if Sasuke had been in a good mood. If he had been annoyed, the rejection wouldn't have been a simple 'no'. In that way he really was quite similar to their grandfather Madara, whose foul moods had been legendary in the company he had started. Even now the employees apparently were on their very best behaviour if grandfather happened to visit father at the company.
"So you won't be thinking about it then?" he asked teasingly.
She smiled and swatted his arm gently. "Definitely not. Now be a dear and check if they still have those sweet pastries in stock that your father likes."
"You're sure you don't mind accompanying me while I go pick up Sasuke?" Itachi questioned, glancing at the blond boy tagging along with him.
Deidara grinned, crossing his arms behind his head. "Nah, it's just a small detour and otherwise I would just be waiting at your front door, un. Might as well go with you and have some company."
"If you're sure," Itachi murmured and led his classmate to the primary school Sasuke attended.
Itachi's school was close to Sasuke's so it only made sense for him to pick up his brother at the end of the day so that they could go home together. This time Deidara would be joining them as Itachi had agreed to work together with him on their latest chemistry project. Itachi usually worked alone on projects, but Deidara was one of the best in chemistry so he didn't particularly mind working with him on this one.
He spotted Sasuke before his little brother saw him. He was talking to a pink haired girl, something which admittedly surprised Itachi because Sasuke wasn't exactly in the habit of talking to girls. Had he changed his mind about this one?
Except when Itachi came closer he heard his brother say, irritation barely hidden, "Can't come."
"Aw, why not?" the pink haired girl pouted, tugging at her ponytail. "It'll be fun I promise!"
"I'm sure," Sasuke droned, "but I still can't. I already have a sleepover planned."
He had?
"You do?" she asked stunned.
Itachi was equally surprised. Sasuke hadn't mentioned anything about a sleepover. He was certain that if his brother had told mother about it – like he should have – that mother would have been way too excited to keep quiet about it and Itachi would have been told regardless of whether Sasuke had wanted him to know about it or not.
"Yes, I do," Sasuke said clipped.
The girl's pout increased and she leant slightly forwards; her backpack sliding to the left with that move. "Who are you having a sleepover with then?" she demanded and her eyes narrowed with something Itachi easily recognised as jealousy.
Next to him Deidara whistled quietly. "Man, your little brother is already a little heartbreaker, huh?" he joked.
"Don't let him hear you say that," Itachi murmured.
"With him," Sasuke answered promptly and pointed to a blond haired boy who was just passing them by.
The blond boy stopped and tilted his head to the right. "Hm, Sasuke?"
"You and I planned a sleepover at my house tonight, remember, Naruto?" Sasuke said primly, staring at the other boy.
Itachi knew his little brother like the back of his own hand, however, and he knew without a doubt that Sasuke was completely bullshitting now. There was no sleepover planned and definitely not with the blond boy. Clearly he was just fibbing about this in an attempt to get the girl to leave him alone and Itachi was interested in watching this unfold.
The blond boy seemed to realise what was happening and apparently had no qualms about following Sasuke's little scheme, because he grinned and rocked back and forth on his heels, clutching the straps of his orange backpack firmly.
"Of course I remember! How can I forget when this is the first time I'm sleeping over at your house?" the boy, Naruto, grinned widely; his blue eyes turning almost into a crescent shape with the size of his grin.
"There's no way you're having a sleepover with him!" the girl protested and pointed her finger accusingly at Naruto; her sweet demeanour abruptly vanishing. "Why would you want a sleepover with him?"
"Already fighting over a boy at that age?" Deidara mumbled impressed. "Damn, they are growing up fast nowadays, un."
"Because I'm cute," Naruto answered completely non-puzzled.
Itachi caught Sasuke smiling for a couple of seconds and had to cover a smile of his own. Well, Naruto certainly had some healthy confidence.
"There is no way you're cuter than me!" she insisted snootily, sticking out her chin.
"Yeah, I am!" Naruto said stubbornly, cocking his head to the left.
"Says who?!"
"My mum," he replied frankly. "Mum says I'm cuter than everyone else and what she says is true so there." He stuck out his tongue.
"I fucking love this kid already," Deidara whispered, grinning like a maniac.
"You are not - !" But whatever refusal the girl had been about to spit out, died when Sasuke stepped towards Naruto and grabbed him by his wrist.
"We're going now before we're home too late," he told the girl pointedly, who looked crestfallen immediately. "My brother is waiting for us."
"Fine!" She sniffed, balled her little fists and marched away; her face a veritable thundercloud.
"Hi, nii-san," Sasuke greeted him calmly as if the entire discussion between him, Naruto and the girl hadn't happened at all.
"So you're Sasuke's brother," Naruto said happily. "You two look a lot alike!"
"No, we don't," Sasuke instantly denied, scowling slightly.
"I'm Uzumaki Naruto!" Naruto introduced himself and clumsily bowed. "Nice to meet you!"
"Uchiha Itachi," Itachi smiled. "Sasuke's older brother, but you know that already."
"Name's Deidara; I'm Itachi-kun's classmate," Deidara grinned, bracing his arm on Itachi's shoulder.
"Well, guess it's time for me to go home," Naruto said cheerfully and went to turn around, but Sasuke still had a hold on his hand and he was tugged back. He looked questioningly at Sasuke. "Sasuke?"
"We're having a sleepover tonight, aren't we?" Sasuke scowled and that had to be the absolute weirdest way to invite someone over for a sleepover.
Somehow it worked on Naruto, though, because his face lit up and he grinned, wriggling on the spot. "Okay! But I have to call mum to tell her!"
"You can borrow my phone," Itachi offered and handed his phone to the blond haired boy. He glanced at Sasuke, but the boy was decidedly not looking at him.
"For some reason, this whole scene is cute as hell, dude," Deidara whispered, nodded at the way Sasuke still had a hold on Naruto's wrist.
"Mummy? I'm using Itachi-nii-san's phone to call you," Naruto said happily when his mother presumably picked up. "Sasuke invited me over for a sleepover tonight so I'm staying at his home, okay?"
She said something that had him pouting. "Fine, but he didn't say we couldn't so it's fine." He held out the phone to Itachi. "Mummy wants to talk to you."
"Sure," Itachi agreed and accepted the phone, having expected something like this to happen. "Hello, you're speaking with Uchiha Itachi, Sasuke's older brother."
"Uzumaki Kushina, Naruto's mother," the woman on the other end introduced herself. "I just want to be sure: are your parents really okay with having Naruto staying the night? Naruto didn't tell me about this sleepover at all and I don't want him to bug your family. He can be a bit too enthusiastic at times." Her sigh was both fond and exasperated.
"They won't have any problem with it at all," he reassured her.
Would they be surprised, perhaps even shocked? No doubt, but they would be very glad to know that Sasuke was starting to open up to someone at least. Perhaps he and Naruto would even become good friends? It would be nice if such a thing were to happen, because truthfully sometimes Itachi worried about his little brother.
"All right then, if you can give me your address, I'll drop off Naruto's stuff in an hour if that's okay with your family," Uzumaki suggested.
"That's not a problem at all," he confirmed and told her their address. "You want to say something else to your son?"
"Yes, give him to me for a bit. I need to make sure he knows he needs to behave," she said firmly.
"Here, your mother wants to tell you something else before we leave," Itachi told Naruto, who wrinkled his nose but accepted the phone again.
"Mummy, I know how to be good!" he huffed almost immediately, puffing out his cheeks.
"Fucking adorable, man," Deidara snickered.
"I'll be really good, I promise," Naruto said, pouting. "Can I go now? I'm having a sleepover with Sasuke!"
She said something else which made him smile happily. "Okay, bye-bye, love you too!" He handed the phone back to Itachi. "Now we can go!"
"So, a sleepover, hm?" Itachi mused when Deidara dragged Naruto into a conversation about his classes as if he had know the boy longer than ten minutes.
"Yes, a sleepover, what of it?" Sasuke huffed, narrowing his eyes at him.
Itachi smiled and ruffled Sasuke's hair, ignoring his warning hiss. "Nothing, I hope you'll have fun with Naruto-kun, otouto."
When Itachi checked on his little brother and his new friend later that night after they had fallen asleep, he saw the both of them curled up together in Sasuke's bed. The bed which had a lot more blankets and pillows on it than Itachi remembered it being this morning, but the way they were situated around the two boys told him everything he needed to know. He chuckled quietly and closed the door behind him, walking away soundlessly.
It looked like Sasuke wouldn't be that averse towards sleepovers anymore – or at least not if it involved a certain blond boy, Itachi supposed.
He guessed he would find out soon whether Sasuke had started to like sleepovers.
Sasuke did end up liking sleepovers after all – but only when they involved Naruto and Naruto only. It would become a regular occurrence to see Sasuke's bed turned into a nest courtesy of Naruto's Omega nesting habits.
And if their sleepovers turned less innocent once they became older and realised they didn't only like each other as best friends, well, fortunately Itachi's bedroom was at the other end of the hallway and he had a nice pair of noise blocking headphones.
