"Sean!" Danny called out as he threw on his coat. "Let's go! We're going to be late to Grandpa's if we don't leave now."
"Coming!" he responded.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps were heard coming down the stairs. The youngest Reagan carried his backpack and laptop, which slightly confused his father. The kid never had his backpack or laptop on him unless he absolutely had to.
"What's that for?" Danny asked curiously. "Do you have something to study for?"
"Actually no," Sean responded. "I have to do an interview."
"Oh," Danny said with a surprised look. "Who are you interviewing?"
"Uncle Jamie and Aunt Eddie," he said. "So we might have to stay at Grandpa's a little late."
"Oh yeah? Well okay." The father and son made their way outside, got in the car, and began to make their way to Bay Ridge. The older Reagan looked over at his son to see him staring intently at a few papers that he had pulled out of his backpack.
"You're looking really focused over there," Danny said. "Is that for the interview?"
Sean nodded, "Yep. I'm just looking over my questions."
"What're you interviewing them about?" Danny asked curiously.
"Okay, let me give you some context," he began. "I'm taking a class called Intimate Relationships. And before you say anything, it was an elective and I thought it would be kind of interesting. Basically, the project is to interview a couple that you most admire. Of course, I thought about you and mom but now that I'm older and understand things a little bit more, the couple that I've had the most exposure to is Uncle Jamie and Eddie. I've always liked the relationship they have. You don't hear about too many couples being on the job together."
"That's true. And they worked together for years before they even made it official," Danny informed him. "You know that your uncle and Eddie never even really dated right? They went straight into being engaged."
Sean's eyes widened, "Really? They didn't date?"
Danny shook his head, "Nope. I think it was only three days at most before they got engaged."
"Woah. This is going to be interesting."
"Okay Sean," Jamie said as he and Eddie took a seat on the couch in front of him after family dinner. "How do you want to do this?"
"The plan is to interview the two of you separately and then together," he stated. "We can get the individual interviews done tonight and if you're okay with it, I can go over to your apartment or we can meet someplace and I'll interview you two together. After that, I'll compare what the two of you said and put my paper together from there."
"Can we know what each other said?" Eddie asked curiously.
Sean nodded, "If you want to. I'm typing and recording this so I'll send that all to you when I'm done with the paper." Then, he pulled out his laptop and set it on his lap. "Okay, who wants to go first?"
"I'll go," Eddie smiled. She gently shoved at her husband to get up. "Get out of here, Bub. I'm up."
Jamie chuckled and stood up, "Okay I'm going. I'll be in the backyard with Dad and Danny. Come get me when it's my turn."
Sean nodded at his uncle as he walked away. "Alright, Aunt Eddie. Let's start," he began. "Give me your name, how long you've been married and who you are married to."
"Edit Marie Janko-Reagan. I've been married to Jameson Reagan for almost five years now."
"Alright. Let's get into it. Most of us learn about relationships from the first people we are exposed to which is our parents. Did your parents have an influence of what kind of relationship you wanted to have with a significant other?"
"Yes. They showed me what kind of relationship I didn't want with a significant other."
"How so?" Sean continued.
"A lot of their relationship was built up on lies. I'll admit, it wasn't always bad. They had some good times together. But things changed once money was involved. My dad started having affairs and I had to lie for him to my mom and when people came looking for him. Then, my mom ended up having an affair to get back at him and I had to lie for her. It was stressful for me as a kid. But I was little, I didn't know any different."
"I can imagine," Sean replied.
"There was love there and I think there still is. I love both of my parents despite their faults. But I had always told myself that I didn't want to have a marriage like that. I wanted something different."
"First question for you, Uncle Jamie. And the questions I'm asking you are kind of similar to what I asked her. Did your parents influence what you wanted in a relationship with a significant other?"
Jamie pondered for moment before nodding, "They did but at the same time, they didn't. I love and respect the relationship my parents had with one another but I knew that I didn't want something similar to theirs either. I craved something different and I definitely have that with your aunt.
"How so?"
"I just feel like our relationship is definitely different from the way I grew up. Dad worked quite a bit and Mom stayed home. She maintained the house while Dad was out. And I'm not saying that it's a bad way to live but that was the normal for me when I was little. My mom was a wonderful mother but I know she craved more than just being at home with us. I know she wanted more of a life outside of that."
Sean simply nodded as he typed away on his computer.
"She put a lot of her own interests and desires on the back burner to raise us and to make my dad's life easier," he continued. "And I appreciate that immensely but I wouldn't want Eddie to feel like she has to do that for me. She has a promising career that has potential to go anywhere she wants it to."
"Let me ask you this, if you two have kids and she says that she wants to stay home with them and not work anymore, would you be okay with that?" Sean asked out of his own curiosity.
Jamie nodded, "I would be. If that's what she truly wanted to do, I would support her.
Sean smiled, "I like that."
"Next question," Sean said to his aunt as he looked up from his computer. "And this can be from an actual relationship or someone in your life... who was the first person who broke your heart?"
"Woah," Eddie said with a light laugh. "You're getting deep into this, Sean."
He gave a small shrug, "It's a part of the job."
"My first heartbreak..." she trailed off. She sat in thought for a long moment before responding. "... was my dad."
"Wow really?" Sean asked.
Eddie nodded. "As a kid, my dad was my hero. I followed him everywhere and was his shadow a lot of the time. I adored him. But, when I grew up and learned of everything he did, it hurt like hell. He broke my trust and to this day, is still working on getting it back. He let me down. I think that's what I was weary of ever getting too close to anyone."
"That's a tough way to live," Sean commented.
"It is," she agreed. "It's hard to trust and you build a wall up. A lot of times, you feel better with being alone. But, your uncle was the first person who came into my life and chipped away at that wall piece by piece. I was really good at pushing people away but he never let me do that to him. He was there for me from the beginning and never left."
Sean quickly finished typing before asking Jamie the next question. "What was your first heartbreak?" he asked. "Or better yet, who was the person who did it if there is one?"
"Damn Sean," Jamie said with slightly widened eyes. "You're getting heavy with these questions. But I like it."
Sean smiled, "Thank you."
"This didn't really break my heart per se but it definitely hurt," he began. "I would say that Sydney breaking off the engagement was the one for me."
"I was young when it happened and Mom and Dad didn't tell us much but why did you two break up?" he asked.
"Well... it was a lot of things. I saw it coming and she did too. Once I finished the academy, I feel like we were coming to the end of the road for us. She tried to be supportive but she couldn't handle being a cop's wife. And I probably didn't do enough in supporting her with the transition. I pretty much threw it on her. It was only a matter of time before one of us said something."
"Did you see the two of you being together forever?" Sean added.
"At one point... I did. I thought she would be the one I would spend my life with. But things happen for a reason."
"And worked out for the best, right?"
Jamie glanced over to their wedding picture that was sitting on the mantle and smiled gently, "Right."
"Now let's talk about your significant other," Sean said with a smile to Eddie. "Did you ever imagine yourself marrying who you did? Did you have a specific image of what your future partner would be like?"
"Honestly no. I wasn't even sure if I ever wanted to get married," she revealed. "After everything that happened with my dad and my parent's relationship, I was sure that what happened with them was destined to happen to me at some point. I figured that if I never went there, then it wouldn't happen."
"What changed your mind about marriage?" Sean asked.
Eddie flashed a small smile, "Meeting your uncle. Over time, he was the first person I actually felt safe with. He treated me better than any other man I had been with. I hadn't felt that way in a long time."
"You saw a future with him?"
She nodded, "I knew we were meant to be in each other's lives in some way, shape, or form. It took awhile before we realized how we were supposed to be in each other's lives but we got there eventually."
"Did you ever see yourself being with someone like Aunt Eddie?" Sean asked his uncle. "After everything that happened with Sydney, did you even think you'd get to a point where you would want to get married?"
"I hoped for it," he admitted. "But I wasn't going to beat myself up if it didn't happen. With Eddie..." Suddenly, a smile appeared on his lips. "I wasn't expecting her at all. She came into my life at a time when I had already lost a partner and was feeling a little lost. She was everything opposite from what I was used to. And I liked that a lot. I found myself wanting to spend more time with her when I could."
"Like? How would you two spend time together?"
"As you know already, she's a foodie. And she can out drink anyone twice her size. We would go out to eat or go to bars. We were almost always together after a shift. It was rare if we weren't. Sometimes, she would plan something and tell me last second that I was going with her. I wasn't given the choice or anything like that. But I would go because I wanted to spend more time with her."
"And all of that didn't tell you that you had feelings for her, Uncle Jamie?" Sean questioned with a knowing look.
Jamie laughed, "Trust me... you're not the first to tell me that and probably won't be the last. The thing is... we had such a solid partnership and I didn't want to ruin that. My thought was that if we get together and it didn't work out, then I would lose her personally and professionally. I already had one relationship fail. I didn't want to risk that. I wanted her in my life. And if that was keeping her there professionally, then I would take it. Even though it was killed me seeing her with other guys, I never let myself go further with her."
"So you had feelings for her all that time and had to watch her go out with other guys?" Sean responded. "That's rough. I couldn't do it."
"Trust me, I wouldn't want you to," Jamie sighed.
"Okay," Sean said with a slight yawn. "We're on the last one, Aunt Eddie. How did you know that Uncle Jamie was the one for you?"
"Well..." she began gently. "It was quite a few things that happened. Long story short, I got shot and then he almost got shot a few weeks later. There was other things going on at the time too but I won't get into that. But.. I realized that I couldn't live without him. I didn't want to live without him. He was and is, the most important person in my life. If that bullet would've hit him and something would've happened, I don't know what I would've done. The risk we faced if we got together was more than worth it at that point. So... we got together. And it was the best risk I've ever taken."
"And if all of that wouldn't have happened, do you think that you two would've gotten together?" he continued.
"Honestly... I don't know," she responded. "I really don't know how to answer that. I feel like we still would've been in each other's lives in some way. But I'm glad we got some sense knocked into us and we didn't have to find out what would've happened if we didn't get together."
Sean smiled, "Me too."
"Last question for you and we're done for the night," Sean said as he looked over at his uncle. "How did you know that Aunt Eddie was the one? Did something happen to make you realize it or you just knew?"
"I'll be honest, I feel like I knew that she was the one for a long time. But her getting shot and then me almost getting shot a few weeks later is what cemented it for me. It was her and another officer that had gotten shot. The officer ended up passing away unfortunately. I remember thinking to myself... I'm glad that it was him and not her."
"That's understandable," Sean replied. "Especially with the history the two of you had by that time."
Jamie nodded, "Yeah. But... it felt like more than that. If something would've happened to her, I would've lost my mind. I don't think I could've kept going if something would've happen to her. She... she was and is my entire world. She keeps me going everyday."
"She's your person," Sean said.
He smiled, "Yeah. She's my person."
Next and final chapter, Sean interviews Jamie and Eddie together. Then, the couple gets to see each other's responses during their respective interviews.
