"You've got this Gine, just-"
"I'm sorry Bardock, but if I hear you say that one more time it's going to be vegetables tonight!" Said Gine, cutting him off. Bardock opens his mouth to say something, but he realizes that he only knows how to prepare field rations. So he wisely keeps his mouth shut.
Gine was sitting up on a gurney with her black bangs plastered to her forehead. The rest of her shoulder length hair is soaked with sweat. She has a small stature, only reaching just above five feet with narrow shoulders, and was dressed in a hospital gown. Her normally pale skin was currently flushed due to her being in labor.
Bardock was standing next to Gine with his hand in her's. He was more 'built' compared to his wife. He had broad shoulders, and chiseled muscles. He was a decent bit taller than his wife, though he still fell short of the average. He had wild hair, with spikes jutting out from every angle, and missing perhaps the most iconic scar in all of anime; a gnarly 'X' on his left cheek.
He just came back from a mission just after Gine went into labor, so hadn't had time to change out of his standard saiyan full battle armor. It had a yellow-brown skirt and crotch guards. The chest piece and wrist guard were a teal with the entire set having white outlines. Despite his face remaining stoic and controlled, his tail was unwrapped from his waist and was swishing back and forth due to how nervous he really felt.
They were both joined by two others, a doctor and a nurse. Both of them were wearing what you would expect, and you could tell at a glance that they had this job because they were weak, but smart. The four of them were inside of a sterile hospital room. They were surrounded by many strange looking tools and monitors, though none were in use at the moment. Normally births were held in different rooms with scout scopes on standby, but the circumstances here required them to be in the operating room.
"I can see their head. Go get the scout scope ready nurse Aimo."
"Of course Dr. Daiko." Said the nurse as she rushed out of the room.
"Now Gine," said the doctor, "I know this isn't something you wanna hear right now, but I really do need you to push just a bit more." Normally they don't require a doctor to assist those in labor, but this was a particularly long and difficult birth. Nearly a full twenty four hours at this point. So they needed him on standby to perform an emergency C-section if necessary. 'Though that isn't much of a worry anymore' he thinks, as he holds up a screaming baby boy. "Damn, that's a big baby. Congrats you two, he looks healthy." He says.
The tension from both parents visibly washes away, being replaced with exhaustion. Though that quickly changes as the nurse has come back with the clunky scout scope, and per low-class custom it was up to the father to do the initial power level reading.
"Just a word of advice, Bardock. I've seen many men go into this with high expectations. It rarely goes how they want it to." Cautions the doctor.
"I know, so let's just get this over with." Bardock said to the doctor. He knew that he shouldn't have high hopes. Both him and his wife came from the bottom of the bottom, the lowest of the low-class. He just couldn't help himself though. "Hold him out so I can get a clean scan." He said.
As the doctor reaches to hold the babe by his tail to get him to quiet down, he makes a strange face. As if he didn't know what to make of the situation.
"Err.. Bardock sir. Your son appears to have... a second tail. They're black too." The doctor says, not entirely sure of himself or the situation. Bardock's expression doesn't change, but his tail completely freezes in place while Gine tries to get up and take a look despite her fatigue.
"Is he alright? Are his tails fine? Is there anything else wrong?" Gine stumbles out.
"Hold on, hold on. Let me see real quick." The doctor tells Gine. The doctor grabs one of the baby's tails and... nothing. He's still crying. "Well that's odd." The doctor mutters.
"What is? Is there something wrong with my baby boy?" Gine asks the doctor weakly. She remained in her bed, but her attempt to get up had drained whatever energy she had left.
"No, no, nothing wrong per se. It seems that our tails inherent weakness seems to not be present in him. In fact both his tails are much longer and thicker than any baby I've ever seen." Dr. Daiko informs Gine.
"So is he ok?" "So nothings wrong?" Gine and Bardock had asked at the same time.
"Wrong as in detrimental to his health? No. There have been saiyans with black tails, a recessive gene, but there has never been a saiyan with two tails before." He tells them. "It's most likely a sort of mutation. Did you drink or smoke while pregnant miss Gine." He asks gingerly, knowing that it could set her off.
"Of course I hadn't. I have never even-" Gine begins.
"What about the hibernation mode of space pods?" Bardock suggested.
The doctor appears to be deep in thought before replying. "That could be. It's possible that the gas that induces hibernation could potentially contain teratogens. Though of course the tuffles had never researched the matter, the cowards." He pauses before saying, "Whatever the case may be he looks to be as healthy as any baby I've seen. The mutation could prove to be entirely beneficial. Though I'd recommend regular physicals to ensure nothing is wrong."
"Alright thank you doctor." Says Bardock. With this new information, the pressure he feels for measuring his son's power level has only increased. 'For your sake son, I hope you're stronger than I was.' He thinks. The initial reading is the absolute most important one in a saiyans life. It determines their status, their occupation, their opportunities, everything. "Just hold him up and I'll scan him."
The doctor does as he's told. A little annoyed at the baby's constant wailing. He doesn't have to deal with them screaming so much.
-BEBEBEBEBEBE BEEEEEP-
Bardock reads the screen before his face breaks out into a giant grin. "Hell yeah!" He says "Leek can suck my giant balls. That's my fucking boy right there. 837! That's almost fucking elite!" Gine was shocked, as that was only a few hundred under her own power level.
While Bardock is celebrating the power level of his newborn, the doctor begins to dry off the baby and hand him to his mother. He says while smiling, "While I don't mean to rain on your parade Bardock, I believe the boy needs a name, no?"
'Oh yeah' Bardock thinks. He looks at the doctor and says, " 'Course. Thanks for your help doc" The doctor nods and leaves the room with the power scope and the nurse to give the two some privacy before mentioning one last thing.
"One last thing I need to check. You don't have a nursing pod at home do you?" The doctor asks.
"Er...uh no. We can't really afford one just yet." Gine gives her reply tiredly.
"It's quite alright. Once you two are done here you're free to take him home if you wish." Dr. Daiko tells them. The new parents nod at him as he and the nurse leave to give them privacy.
Once they are outside of the room however, the doctor looks at the nurse with a serious face. "Nurse Aimo, inform the King Vegeta at once. Tell him that I believe the son of Bardock will qualify for special trading in the coming years." While the nurse quickly runs off to inform the king, the doctor breaks into a small smile and thinks 'That boy will certainly bring honor and strength to the saiyan empire, I'm sure of it.'
Back inside of the operating room, Bardock and Gine are discussing what their new son's name should be. Currently Gine is trying to convince Bardock that Bardock Jr. is a terrible name and doesn't match the baby at all. Not to mention that naming a child their parent is mostly for royalty.
"He has your front hair spike honey." Says Gine
The baby had a single low hanging spike of hair covering the right of his forehead like his father. He had a shaggy, spiky head of hair that ended right between his shoulder blades, much like his mother's.
While the two were going back and forth on potential names, their newborn was having entirely different thoughts about the situation that he has now found himself in.
That was the single most terrifying experience in my li- well both lives now I guess. I had only just stopped freaking out. It was like being inside of those water snakes with Mike Tyson keeping an absolute vice grip on it. I don't know how long it was, but I will do anything to never repeat that experience.
'Reincarnation huh? That's pretty nice.' I think. It wouldn't be my first guess as to what happens after dying, but it's one of the better options I suppose. I'll admit I was scared shitless for a while. I couldn't see, move, and I could just barely hear. If I didn't have claustrophobia before I sure as hell do now. I'd take being born again over the other unsavory options though. There could have been nothing after death. Just an infinite plane of nonexistence. 'Reborn as a saiyan? That... comes with some complications.' I think. The pros outweigh the cons in my opinion. Doubly so considering who exactly I was related to.
Though I've only seen them behind a screen, it's kinda hard to not recognize Bardock's distinctive hair that Goku eventually inherits.
'Are he and Raditz even going to be born now?'
That's a really scary thought. I know Berus had that fish that could see the future, so is there some form of fate in this world? No Goku means that Zeno guy will destroy the universe right? Not that I really knew anything too specific. It's been years since I've seen the show, and I only watched about half of Super. I could remember the general plot of the series along with some key details, but specific dates? Facts? Power levels? Other than final form Freeza having a power level of three million.
Although there was also the 100% form that he reached 'cause Goku's an idiot.
But what do I do now? I don't know how much time before the planet is blown, Goku might not be born, and there could be outrageous butterfly effects. 'Not to mention King Vegeta might kill me for being a mutant.' That's what I'm the most afraid of, as it's something that I have literally no control over.
"How about Riku?" Suggested Bardock.
Oh? That name actually sounds kinda badass-
"Absolutely not." Gine denied.
Yeah ok, that's cool.
So assuming King Vegeta doesn't kill me, what's my goal? I know too little about the original dragon ball. Do I run away? I don't think so. I'd need to know how to pilot a pod and the location of a planet. It'd also be a dick move if I just up and abandoned Gine and Bardock. From their perspective I'd just be their son who went missing out of the blue. I'm not going to be putting someone through that.
"What about Okra?" Asked Bardock.
"No." Gine said.
I don't think she even thought about that one.
On another note I am so not looking forward to being conscious while I'm a baby. Already I can tell this isn't going to be fun. Lack of mobility, shiting myself, the complete package.
Man, I am tired. It turns out being born is exhausting. Go figure. Actually don't babies sleep like 12 hours a day? It's probably different for saiyans. Maybe. I doubt it actually.
"Well what about...Sprout?" Said Bardock. He did not think it was gonna take this long, and was grasping at straws at this point. He really thought Bardock Jr. was gonna stick.
"Hmmm..." Gine hummed. There was a long pause while Gine was internally debating on the name. "A unique name for a one of a kind baby? I like it." She shifts me so that we can all see each other. "Welcome to our family Sprout." She said, giving a radiant smile with my father sporting a light smirk on his face.
'... You know, suddenly I feel like things are gonna be just alright.'
I. Am. So. Fucking. Bored. There isn't anything fun for me to look at in this house, let alone stuff for me to do. The most fun I've had was when me and Gine played peekaboo. I never realized how much it sucks not having a phone or anything. How the hell do the Amish do it? My only saving grace is sleeping in my hard ass crib that sits in my parent's cramped room.
The house was something that I certainly would never expect someone as strong as Bardock living. Except the kitchen, that seemed pretty par for the course. There are three large countertops, with two of them in the corners of the room. The third one was centered on the opposite wall, with the fridge next to it and a bunch of meat hooks above it.
There isn't a whole lot to say in the dining room, if it can even be called that. It was literally just a table with two chairs, and some shelves on the wall with some pots that I assume to have spices of some kind. My parents' room had a big mattress in the center of the room, with some drawers underneath it. That's all. It was extraordinarily bare and cramped.
Being a baby is so much worse than I thought. A week into it and I could tell that it was gonna be rough. I shit and piss myself all of the time, and my motor control is completely shot. Ironically the two limbs I'm not used to having are the ones that I have the greatest control over.
I've thought about trying to use ki, but decided it was a bad idea. While I would love to start slinging blasts of energy like there's no tomorrow, I know literally nothing about it. What makes it worse is that I can feel it. I don't know if it's the new saiyan biology, but I can feel that power calling to me. It's just sitting there waiting for me to use it. If I just dug a little I just know I can-
"Sprout, are you ready to come to work with momma? Yes you are, aren't you?" Gine said, breaking my focus.
"Goo goo ga ga" Nailed it.
Gine takes me with her when she goes to work. She puts me in a sling thing across her chest. I was fine with it because it let me look around. I haven't seen Bardock in a while. He left to go on a mission about two weeks after my birth.
I think it's been about two months since I've been born? It's really hard to tell when you sleep twelve hours a day. Plus the fact people tend to not have calendars. You'd think that they'd be in scouters, but they don't seem to have been invented yet.
From what I can remember of the Broly movie that means I'm currently before the saiyans became a part of King Cold's empire. Vegeta was in a nursing pod at the start of the movie. So there's about six to seven years at least until the planet blows up? I don't know how old Vegeta was exactly and saiyans age weirdly so I could be wrong.
I've been trying to figure out exactly where I place in the 'Timeline' so to speak, and it's been a massive headache. I'm so far from what I actually know about Dragon Ball that I'm really grasping for straws. Though at this point there isn't really much else to do while Gine chops up an absolutely monstrous price of meat.
The day goes on like it normally does, Gine cuts up some meat, someone comes by to purchase some, rinse and repeat until the sun just about dips below the distant mountain range.
When we arrived home, both me and Gine were surprised to see Bardock sitting at the dining room table.
He was completely battered. His face was grimy like he hadn't had a shower since he left the planet. There were bandages on his nose, and his arms. The most startling thing about his appearance was the very new scar that was on his left cheek. Despite how injured he appeared you could still feel that he wasn't to be fucked around with.
"Bardock!" Gine gasped.
"I'm fine Gine really. You should see the other guy." Bardock said, while trying with little success to calm his wife down. "Besides, there are other things that we need to be concerned about." He said.
Gine was puzzled. "What do you mean? What's going on?" Gine pressed Bardock.
The saiyan warrior took a deep breath before explaining. "When my space pod landed I was immediately approached by the chamberlain himself." Surprisingly he looked straight at me and said, "The king wants to meet us and our son."
'Uh oh'
AN: After writing this I decided that this was just gonna collect dust in the document manager. Once I heard the news about Akira Toriyama , I felt compelled to finish this. Dragon Ball was the largest part of my life growing up, and it shaped me into who I am today. I seriously hope that he can rest in peace knowing the profound impact he had on the world.
Also you're a real one if you know what the chapter title is a reference to.
