Doc and I got back in his car and drove back to the lab while Marty drove right behind us. When we got there, we got it into his garage which just so happened to be his lab. "So how exactly does this time machine work? What does it need to make it run?" he asked us.
"Uhhhhh…" I said, looking at Marty.
"You two must have some idea how it works," Doc said.
"Don't look at me," I said.
"Oh! I think you…er, Doc…the other Doc…80s Doc said something about it. I still have the video camera! We can use that!" Marty said. "You got a T.V I can hook it up to?"
"T.V?" Doc asked.
"A television?" I said.
"Oh yes! Right over here," Doc said. Marty pulled out the camera from the DeLorean and managed to hook it up to the T.V.
"Alright Doc, this is it," Marty said.
'Never mind that never mind that. Roll tape!' 80s Doc said.
"That's me! I'm an old man!" current Doc said. "Thank God I still have all my hair! Wait, what's that I'm wearing?"
"That's a radiation suit," Marty said.
"Radiation suit? Of course! The fallout from the Atomic wars," Doc said, and Marty fast-forwards the tape. "Imagine. A portable television set. No wonder your president has to be an actor, he has to look good on television."
"Hey! Doc, this is it!" Marty said and stopped the tape.
"No this sucker's electrical. But I need a nuclear reactor to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity I need."
"What did I just say?" Current Doc asked. Marty rewound the tape and played it back.
"No this sucker's electrical. But I need a nuclear reactor to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity..."
"1.21 GIGAWATT?!" Doc shouted, and started walking funny out towards the door. "Great Scott!" he said before leaving us completely.
"WHAT THE HELL IS A GIGAWATT?!" Marty shouted back and started following him too. Seeing no other option, I followed him. I followed Marty back into the house before I stopped dead in my tracks in the middle of the yard.
'I'm following him wherever I go again,' I thought. I squeezed my eyes closed and tried to forget the path that Marty took. 'Ah screw it. I'll deal with it later.' With that, I ran into the house.
"…I'm afraid you're stuck here," I heard Doc say.
"Wait, what?!" I said.
"Doc, we can't be stuck here! We've got a life; in 1985! I've got a girl!"
"Is she pretty?" Doc asked.
"She's beautiful! She's kind, supportive, has the prettiest golden hairyou've ever seen, and eyes that sparkle…" I finally smacked his head.
"Not the time, Romeo," I said.
"Don't hit me. You'll get there soon. You just haven't found him yet," Marty said.
"Well, I'm not finding him here. Can't you just get some plutonium or something?" I said.
"Abby, I'm sure plutonium is available everywhere in 1985, but here, it's a little hard to come by. The only source that can generate that kind of power is a bolt of lightning," Doc said.
"What did you say?" Marty asked.
"A bolt of lightning. Unfortunately, you never know when or where a bolt will strike," Doc said.
"Yes we do," Marty said. He pulled out something from his pocket and gave it to Doc. It was that stupid 'Save the Clocktower' flyer. Doc snatched it from Marty's hands and read it to himself.
"How can a flyer save us?" I asked.
"Not the flyer! The clocktower!" Doc shouted standing up and ran over to his lamp. "This is it! It says here, that a bolt of lightning is going to strike the clocktower at exactly 10:04 PM next Saturday night! If we could somehow…harness this lightning; channel it into your time machine. It just might work."
"Sweet!" I said.
"Next Saturday night, you two are going back to the future!" Doc shouted at absolutely no one.
"Okay! This is good! I can spend a week in 1955. We both can. And until then, we can hang out, show us around…" Marty said, but Doc grabbed his shoulders.
"That is completely out of the question. Neither of you must be seen by anyone. You must not leave this house or speak to anyone! Understand? The consequences could be catastrophic on future events." Doc said, and my stomach dropped.
"Yeah…sure," Marty said pathetically.
"Marty, have either of you interacted with anyone besides me?" Doc asked like a scolding parent.
"Well…..we…may have run into our parents," Marty said.
"Yeah…that's an understatement," I said.
"Great Scott! Let me see that photograph or your brother!" Doc asked. Marty pulled out the photo that he kept in his wallet and showed it to Doc again. Doc grabbed it and put it directly under his lamp.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Just as I thought. Look at your brother!" Doc said. Both of us did so and saw that Dave's head had completely vanished from the photo of all four of us.
"His head's gone," Marty mumbled.
"Why did it do that?" I asked.
"The butterfly effect," Doc mumbled.
"The butterf…oh no," I said panicking.
"Exactly. Because of your interactions, you two have somehow interfered with your parent's meeting. Without them meeting, they won't fall in love, they won't get married, and they won't have kids! That's why your brother's disappearing. Your sister will follow and then Marty will be next and then Abby."
"Whoa whoa whoa! I don't wanna disappear!" I said.
"Calm down. We can figure this out in the morning. Do your parents still attend school?" Doc asked.
"Yeah, I guess," Marty said.
"Perfect. You two can easily pass for students there too. We'll just go there in the morning and try to get them to formally meet," Doc said.
"Then what?" I asked.
"We'll see how it goes. If all goes well and your brother's head comes back, then you two can just wait for Saturday night. If not…. we'll plan for that later."
Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break
"Abby! Abby, wake up!" I gasped as I opened my eyes and saw Doc. Doc had let us sleep in the guest room that only had one bed which was fine. It wasn't the first time Marty and I had to sleep together in bed. Marty wasn't in the room with me though. "Abby, I completely forgot. You and Marty can't walk into school wearing those clothes. The principal will no doubt pull you into his office and we need to avoid messing with time as much as we can. I've got nothing that's your size and no shop is open this early. You need to go over to your mom's place so you can have something to wear just for today."
"You want me to talk to my mother again?" I asked dumbfounded.
"Don't you talk to your mother in the future?" he asked.
"Not really. All she talks with me about is how awful and dangerous gymnastics is. And I thought you just said we shouldn't mess up the timeline more," I said.
"Time's already been affected as you and your brother know it. We may have to keep changing it so you and your siblings are born. Just try not to change it too much."
"But what if…" I started, but couldn't finish.
"It's the only way unless you just wanna stay here and Marty will take care of it," Doc said.
"No way!" I stated.
"Alright. I'll drive you to your mom's place. Then you can ask to borrow a dress and then all three of us can head to the school together. We'll form a plan when we get there."
Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break
Doc drove me and Marty to mom's house and parked a few blocks down. "Go ahead, Abby. We'll wait here for you," Doc said. My eyes went wide and I slowly got out of the car. I walked up to the house and knocked on the door. The door opened up and Grandma answered the door.
"Abby! This is a pleasant surprise," she said.
"Good morning," I said politely. "Do you mind if I talk to Lorraine?"
"Of course not! Come right in," Stella said inviting me in. "Lorraine, you have a visitor!" she called up the steps. "I'll be in the kitchen if you need something honey." With that, she left me alone. I heard a door open upstairs up and someone coming down the steps. Lorraine came down, and her face lit up when she saw me. "Hi, Abby!"
"H-hi," I said. "Can I…talk to you?"
"Sure! Come to my room," she said, and I followed her up the stairs back to her room. She closed the door and looked at me. Suddenly I felt a hole form in my stomach. "What's wrong?"
"I…I…"
"Do you need to borrow something?" she asked.
"How did you know?" she asked even though I already knew the answer.
"It was just the first thing that popped in my head, to be honest," Lorraine said.
'Not the response I'm used to. I don't know how, but she could always figure out what was on my mind. When asked how she knew, she told me because she was my mother.'
"What do you need to borrow? A dress? A jacket?" she asked.
'See! There she goes again!'
"I kinda need to borrow a dress. But if you don't have one I…"
"I've got plenty! Let me have a look!" she said and went over to her closet. "I'm a little taller than you, so some of these might be a little big. Oooo! How about this one?" she pulled out a light teal dress with floral leaves all over the dress. At least it wasn't the most hideous dress I've ever seen. Then I saw that it had short cap sleeves.
"I like it, but…" I said as I touched the short sleeve with my fingers and stared at my wrists. I'd be caught in two seconds flat.
"Oh, I get cold all the time; especially with the season changing. I've got a black sweater you can wear over the top of it. Hold this," she said and gave the dress to me. A few moments later, she pulled out a jet black sweater and a ribbon to tie around my waist to style the dress up a little. "Here you go! Go ahead and try it on. I'll wait outside for you," Lorraine said. She left her bedroom and I carefully took all my clothes off except for my gloves.
After I put the dress on and tied the ribbon around my waist, I looked at myself in the standing mirror. It was kinda cute on me, but the gloves really stood out. I quickly glanced at the door before I slowly took off my gloves, placed them on the bed, and looked at myself in the mirror. I can't remember the last time I saw myself without wearing those gloves. They kinda weren't that comfortable because if I would lean my head against my hand or pressed down too hard, then it would make an annoying mark on my arm that would irritate my healing marks even further. I wonder if I ever go to college or whatever the hell I want to do with myself after high school, I'll be away from Marty enough that I won't have to cut for having bad thoughts. Maybe I'll finally see myself as beautiful and not just Marty with long hair.
"How does it fit, Abby?" Lorraine asked from outside the door. I snapped back into reality, put my net gloves back on, and put on the sweater double-checking that it covered my wrists. Luckily it was a tad big on me, but it worked. Then I walked over to the door and opened it.
"That looks so good on you!" Lorraine said.
"Yeah. And my shoes will match it too. Thanks a lot, Mom-…Lorraine," I said.
"You're welcome. I think you would look really cute with your hair up in that. Come on!" she said and dragged me back into her room.
Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break
Lorraine had put my hair in a high ponytail and curled the ends. Now I looked like a complete dork, but it was better than looking like Marty. That's when we heard a car horn beep. "That's Shelly. Come on!"
"Oh…uh," I said.
"Oh don't worry, they'll love you! I'll introduce you!" she said dragging me out of her room.
"Mom, don't!" I said, and my eyes went wide at my error. This caused Lorraine to laugh, but she didn't say anything. We walked outside and I saw Doc and Marty sitting in a car waiting for me to come back out, but I was dragged to a silver Chevrolet Bel Air. One girl had golden hair tied up in a high bun with a red and white polka-dot dress, while another girl had a turquoise sweater on with a checkered dress underneath. Abby, this is Shelly and Emma; some of my best friends. Girls, this is my new friend, Abby. My dad hit her brother with his car," she said nonchalantly and I just looked at her.
"Nice to meet you, Abby. Are you riding with us to school?" Shelly asked. I looked up and saw Marty holding up his arms.
"I…" I said.
"Of course she is. Come on!" Lorraine said and kinda pushed me into the back seat of the Chevrolet. With that, we were backing up and off to school. I didn't fail to notice Marty slapping his forehead hard and Doc covering his face with his hands.
They were going to kill me.
Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break*Break
We arrived at the high school that looked almost brand-new. It was a lot cleaner and there were rows and rows of bikes parked in front of the school; no chains or anything.
"Different time," I mumbled to myself. After we parked, Shelly and Emma went to their lockers to drop off their bags and get the books they needed for first period. I followed Lorraine to her locker where all of us were going to meet.
"Are you going to your locker? Why didn't you bring your bag with you?" Lorraine asked me.
"My locker is being repaired so my stuff's in the office. And…most of my classes don't need any books; at least not right now," I lied. Shelly and Emma came back to us with their books and I saw from the corner of my eye, Marty and Doc walk in the front door.
"Abby, you should tell them about those flips you were showing Milton and Sally yesterday," Lorraine said.
"You mean the cartwheels?" I said, and Lorraine nodded.
"You do flips?" Shelly asked.
"Well, I just started taking gymnastics so it's nothing too crazy," I said. Suddenly, we heard some commotion from down the hall. We all looked and saw a bunch of tallboys picking on a smaller teen; a smaller teen named George Mcfly.
'Dad, I love you, but you're such a pushover,' I thought. Right behind the jock boys, I saw another boy. This one had orange hair and dark-brown eyes. Goosebumps immediately started to form on my body. This was the same boy in the diner. He and I made eye contact with each other and I immediately looked away. The girls started to giggle.
"You're blushing, Abby," Lorraine said.
"Shut up!" I hissed, but the girls started laughing again. I gave a quick glance back at the teen who just nodded at me and continued on his way. I watched him walk away, but the butterflies still didn't leave my stomach.
"He's so cute. You think he'll ask you to the dance?" Emma asked.
"Huh?" I asked.
"Lorraine?" a familiar voice called. We all turned around and saw Marty and George in front of us.
"Calvin!" Lorraine said backing up against the locker with a wide mouth.
"I'd like you to meet my good friend, George Mcfly," Marty said.
'Oh shoot. I kinda forgot about the plan, to be honest,' I thought to myself.
"Hi," George said awkwardly. Then he leaned against the locker right in front of Lorraine. "It's a pleasure to meet you."
"How's your head?" Lorraine asked completely ignoring George and went right for Marty. She attempted to touch his head, but Marty kinda shoved it away.
"I'm fine. I'm fine," Marty said.
"I've been so worried about you ever since you ran off the other night," Lorraine said. Suddenly the school bell rang.
"Come on, we're tardy! See you later, Abby," Emma said pulling Lorraine.
"I'm sorry, I have to go," Lorraine said dreamy and ran off with the others.
"Isn't he a dreamboat?" I heard her ask.
'Perfect' I thought. Everyone scrambled out of the hallway until it was just Marty, me, and Doc.
"Doc, she didn't even look at him," Marty said.
"This is more serious than I thought," Doc said.
"And you. Why did you get in the car with them?" Marty asked me.
"Hey! Mom was the one who pushed me in there. I didn't even wanna go in a car with three whole strangers," I said and Marty gave me a funny look. "What? I don't know 50s Mom."
"And apparently your mother has become completely infatuated with you," Doc said.
"So…my mother has the hots for me?!" Marty shouted.
"Oh my God!" I said, leaning against the lockers with my hands.
"Why do you keep saying that everything is heavy? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull in the 80s?" Doc asked.
"What?" I asked confused.
"Nevermind. So the only way we are gonna get those two to mate is if they are alone together. So you two have to get your father and mother to act at some sort of get together.
"Uh, you mean a date?" I asked.
"Exactly."
"So what does a date mean in the 50s?" Marty asked.
"What? They're your parents; you two should know something about them. What are their common interests? What do they like to do for fun?" Marty and I looked at each other.
"Nothing." we both said.
"Yes! This is the answer!" Doc said. The two of us walked over to him pointing at a dance poster. "There's a ceremony coming up here."
"That's it! This is the dance they're supposed to go to where they'll kiss for the first time." Marty said excitedly.
"Alright, Marty you stick to your father like glue and make sure he takes her to that dance." Doc said grabbing Marty's jacket.
"So, how do we do that?" I asked.
Finally got this done. Hope you enjoyed!
