A/N: This story came about while I was talking to a friend about what races you often see people use in fantasy games that are not human. I quickly realized that you tend to see a lot of the same choices a lot of the time. Elves, orcs and dwarves are the big three you see a lot. Some form of angel, demon, or half of one or the other, sometimes both in the case of the Nephilim. They usually tend to end up as the classic edgy bad boy or self-righteous pricks of the group. Then you have your undead, the vampires, skelly boys and Dulhan. More rarely do you see dragonkin/lizardkin or whatever the name in the universe is and mob monsters like goblins and slimes.
But you rarely see some races get chosen, hell even if they are an option. Overlord Fanfics are no different, you end up with the same stuff over and over again.
Then I thought, hey why not play with the idea for some short oneshots and here we are.
My hope is that by making this I give someone, or myself, an idea for a more original character for their overlord fanfics, spice it up a bit you know?
Feel free to use any idea you see here, just be sure to send me a message if you use one so I can read it too!
This is also a way for me to get back into the swing of writing. Since I've been gone for a bit due to the dreaded real life everyone has to deal with.
Maybe I'll make my own someday, not for a while though, I want to continue my first fanfic. Don't want to just leave it unfinished for another project after all!
Chapter 1: Harpy Queen Shervi Stormsong
"What...the...fuck?" I stared at the NPC in front of me shock running through me.
"Mother, what's wrong?" The petite blue feathered harpy looked up at me with worry, her eyes wide and pleading to tell me what was bothering me.
"I, you spoke." I replied dumbly, still trying to wrap my hands around the fact that this NPC had addressed me without a command.
Her eyes widened at my words, and the feathered girl shifted uncomfortably under my gaze.
"I'm sorry for speaking out of turn mommy!" She cried out after a moment, tears coming to her eyes.
I blinked at the sight, emotions, tears even...from an NPC? Had the devs secretly released some kind of sequel and tricked us into thinking the game was shutting down? I kind of felt bad about it, to be honest, it was so lifelike.
I reached out to her after a moment my wings, sparkling like gold in the sun, covering her like a too-large cloak and pulled her to my chest. The girl calmed as I whispered assurances to her. Resting my head on her own for a moment I pulled back to wipe the tears from her face.
"Rain Caller, you've done nothing to displease me, my little stormcloud." I patted her on the head and the smile she gave me was like staring into the sun itself. For a moment I thought I would go blind, she was so bright.
"Have you... noticed anything little one?" I asked her tense.
The younger harpy looked up at me and gasped. Shooting out of my lap with a blush on her face.
"I'm sorry for touching your beautiful win-"I stopped her with a raised wing before she could freak out again.
"No dear, I mean have you noticed any changes?" I corrected, inwardly annoyed.
"I...no?" She looked confused, poor dear, didn't even know what to make of the question. "Should I have?" She looked up at me, head cocked to one side and I couldn't help but think of a baby owl.
I giggled, long and hard, and nearly fell out of my throne as it turned into a laugh so hard I squawked. The young woman in front of me didn't know what to do and it made me laugh even harder.
"Mother?" Another voice called out, I'd not even realized anyone else had entered the throne room. Another harpy, taller than Rain by a head and with crimson locks had approached. Her black brigandine armour contrasted with her crimson wings as she looked concernedly up at me. A trio of spears floated above her ready to engage any enemy at her call. This was Fereo, one of the harpy sentinel captains, tasked with protecting the roost against invaders.
"Ah, Fereo, how are you dear?" I smiled at the younger harpy, the action seeming to calm her somewhat.
"I am well, Queen mother." She bowed her head respectfully.
"Can you do me a favour-" The girl's head snapped back up at the words, a look of shock on her face.
"Queen mother, I am yours to command, your word is law in this roost!" She shook with emotion as if the concept of not following my desires was heresy to her.
Beside her Rain Caller nodded so quickly I thought her head would fly off of her shoulders. That was...an interesting reaction to be sure. I would have to be careful of how I word things in the future, I think. I nodded at her words and continued, a little perturbed by her reaction.
"Ahem, I desire you to gather a few of your sisters and scout the surrounding area dear, I believe that something is amiss." I said calmly as I could.
"Yes mother, leave it to me!" The redhead smiled in a way that frankly felt like deja vu.
The harpy burst into the air in a blur of motion, going off the side of the throneroom and down the spire into the roost below. I leaned back into the throne and closed my eyes for a moment, thinking. This was...it had to be some kind of amazing second game right? It was too real to be Yggdrasil as it was, right? My eyes snapped open a moment later, standing from the throne I walked down the steps, ignoring Rain's squeak as I moved past her. She turned to follow me as I went to the edge of the spire containing the throne room. Looking down into the entirety of the guild below.
The first thing I saw was Quetz, a titanic winged serpent diving through the clouds like an orca did water. Followed by many smaller versions of himself, patrolling the skies just like he was meant to. Mach0 Manz was so proud when we'd acquired him, he'd practically begged us to get him as a guardian. But I suppose it made sense seeing how much he loved that mythology. Higher above him were more of the harpy sentinels, wielding spears or bladed talons, heads a swivel to catch any intruders the reptile may have missed. A few of them saw me looking and chirped in glee, doing a little dance in the air at the sight of their queen watching them. I couldn't help but smile at the action, so realistic!
Down below I could see the Sirens, a subclass of my own race in Yggdrasil, I sometimes regretted not going down that route. Siren Queen could have been pretty cool too. Their ability to charm others with their singing was incredibly powerful for CC. Alas, my own build was too point-intensive to do both subraces. Though I did enjoy what my own abilities brought to the table. As a harpy queen, I could summon different harpies to my aid, and my storm caller class gave me power over the skies themselves. It was pretty awesome and great at controlling a battlefield. I watched as they dipped in and out of the great waterfalls that lead into the shimmering lake below, washing their feathers. Another guardian, Aqeata, watching over them silently. The larger Siren temptress being tended to by some of her smaller kin.
Further down still was a great city, protected by the moat the waters were feeding into. It was a little funny, I'd never thought about where the water was coming from until now. Magic, my brother would probably say, or maybe "A WIZARD DID IT". He did like to say that whenever I questioned something fantastical in games like these...I just wish he was still around to tell me that.
I heard a chirp to my left that startled me, looking at the previously silent Rain with a raised brow she blushed in embarrassment.
"Are you...pleased with what you see mother?" She looked up with hopeful eyes, precious.
"I am, little one." I spoke softly, a smile pulling at my lips.
"She chirped again, delighted at the words." Her wings puffed up in pride, and I had to resist the urge to pet her.
She was too real, it was almost uncanny. I stared at her for a moment before turning back towards the throne room. As I walked I took notice of my wings once again and paused.
"I'll be going to my chambers." I announced, wishing I missed the look of disappointment on the blue girl's face.
I continued to one of the teleportation runes, not entirely sure it would work. It proved me wrong however and with a flash, I was within my personal quarters. Sighing to myself I looked around the place, to the silk curtains, then to the large circular bed that seemed to be stacked with more pillows than a single woman could ever need. I put that thought to the side for a moment and summoned a floating mirror to me. I saw my Avatar, a tall golden winged harpy woman, clad in a long backless robe. My blonde hair was long, but tied in two braids that were curled around my neck and down my front. Feathers from my own wings laced through it. My four wings flush against my back and the talons I bore on my hands and feet are sharp enough to rend flesh from bone. I wiggled them for a moment, suddenly reminded of the tail feathers as well as they shifted from their position. They'd been splayed out like a skirt around my hips but moved as if they were a part of me.
Damn, I looked good, I swayed this way and that admiring my form. The wide hips I'd given myself shifted from side to side. My bust looked like something out of an anime, large and gravity-defying. I'd told myself that It'd been for the roleplay, that it was to look like the perfect harpy queen. But let's be honest, I just wanted to look hot, can you blame a girl?
Anyway, I'd have plenty of time to check out this new update after I got some sleep. It was pretty cool too, I'd probably end up losing many an hour to it. The guys would be so butthurt they'd left the game, shows them, I'd flaunt the fact I was the first to play in their faces...maybe a few of them would even come back.
I shook my head to dispel the loneliness, opening the menu so I could log out...and it didn't pop up. Huh, guess the new update broke something. Not surprising, this was a hell of a change after all. Well, I'd just use the voice commands.
"Log out." I ordered, but nothing happened.
What the?
"End client, Disconnect, fuck...Call GM!" I was getting more and more worried now, damn devs couldn't even update their game right.
"My Queen?" A familiar voice called from outside the door, Fereo, she did not sound pleased. "We have a bit of a problem..."
A/N: I hope you enjoyed this little oneshot!
