Chapter 7 A moment of the Night
When night had come yet again, everyone had gotten ready for bed shortly after dinner, Jacob even used his new tooth brush, but as he now laid there on he sofa, Jacob tossed and turned on the couch, no matter what he did he couldn't find himself falling into slumber, with a frustrated sigh he sat up in his sheets, the quietness of the house loomed over him, and somehow it almost became unbearable to listen too, deciding he wasn't going to be getting too sleep anytime soon he figured maybe some fresh air would do him some good.
silently as he could he crept through the house as all the others were asleep, he made his way downstairs and eventually to the backyard, via the playroom, after sliding open a glass door he stepped out on the deck overlooking the backyard, the Night breeze felt cool, taking a small breath he took a seat on the edge of porch steps, he remained sitting there for a moment, just, listening, to the sounds of the crickets and the distant sounds of the city ambiance, traffic echoing off. He could see the far dim lights of the city among the night sky.
"It all feels so, similar, so familiar " he though to himself, as he sat their, this world, it was like his own with day and night, the air, grass, he let his foot run through the blades of grass under him. " it all felt like he knew. "
" But where is here? " he softly spoke to himself, this world is so much like his own yet so different, where was his home? Why was he sent here? So many questions that rang through his head.
He turned his attention to the night sky that held many shining stars, and he began to wonder if somehow his own world was out there among those stars?
"Am I on a different planet? a new reality? dimension? "he spoke to no one but himself, or was this the in the far future where dog people rule? he thought like this is some type of planet of the apes scenario, yet there appeared to be no records of humans, so where was he!? He then hung his head down.
He thought about how traveling into the city made him feel, visiting the hospital , all of it, he thought about all those eyes staring at him, the unsure and judgmental looks he got,
" Mommy, mommy look at that!, look at the funny person mommy! " the voice of a young child he had heard at the hospital echoed through his head. He saw the embarrassed mother trying to calm her child and avert keeping her own gaze on him.
how he felt so, alienated, so out of place here, wherever it was he knew he had no purpose here. But here he was, stuck, in a world of dogs. Stuck in a Dog's world.
" I-I can't be the only human here, can I?"
his said to himself as flashes of a green light appeared in his mind like many times before, the green light, the dream he had the night before, it all came flooding back into his mind as he winced.
"If that thing brought me here, why? Why me! " He said a bit more loudly to himself, " why did it do this to me!? Why!? " he spoke more loudly to himself.
" how could they do this to- " He then cut himself off before he could finish, and placed his head into his palms and sighed, remaining silent for a while, however that silence was broken when he heard a small creak from behind him.
Jacob lifted his head and glanced back to see two little ears poking out from the doorway, he squinted his eyes more to see the outline of a small pup and realized who it was.
" Bluey? " he spoke allowed arching a brow.
The young Heeler pup stepped out now with a look of confusion on her face, " What are you doing out here Jacob? " she asked her voice sound like a mixture of curiosity and concern.
" What are you doing up? You're parents said you had school in the morning, you should probably be in bed? " Jacob spoke to her as she approached him. " did I wake you? "
Bluey slowly walked over toward Jacob as she explained herself " I just going to ask dad for a glass of water, but then I saw you heading down stairs, " she said almost innocently " I was curious "
" Oh "Jacob looked at her,he didn't know how long she had been "spying" in him but he figured there was no harm in it now " well, I just came out here, to get some fresh air and to, think a little " he said as the young heeler pup took as seat next to him in the porch step.
" What are you thinking about? " she asked innocently
" just about, Home " Jacob noted and looked down at his feet in the grass.
" Canada? " Bluey stated which caused Jacob to give a small chuckle but fallowed it with a sigh.
" Yeah, kind of " he added stating back up at the night sky.
Bluey took the moment to stare at the sky for a moment too, not seeming to know why he was looking up at it, but she did so none the less.
" you'll get back there." Bluey spoke up." Mum and dad will find a way to get you back to you're home " bluey said with a confidante tone.
Jacob glance down at her, and gave a light nod." I hope so " He said softly.
" do You, miss you're home a lot? " Bluey then asked noting the human not taking his eyes off the sky,
" I miss it, a lot " he said rubbing his arm " I just wish I knew where it was "
" You said you have a mum and dad? I bet they must be really missing you huh?" Bluey added as Jacob then looked down at his feet, not saying anything for a moment.
" Yeah." was all he responded with.
" I'm sure they must be wondering where you are." Bluey said as Jacob just shut his eyes, Bluey looked back up at him, a sense of more curiosity came over her.
" Jacob, do you have any brothers or sisters? " bluey asked
Jacob glance back down at her. " No, I don't it was just me and my, parents " he spoke.
" Ooh!?...What about cousins, or uncles and aunts? Grandparents? "bluey asked, as Jacob glance over at her.
" uuh,well, None that I really knew well " Jacob said rubbing the back of his neck, a slight discomforting look now apparent on his face.
"I take it, you have some other relatives ? " Jacob asked as Bluey nodded her head.
"Oh yeah, lots! I have my uncle Stripe, my aunt Trixie, and my Cousins Socks and Muffin ! " Bluey said, " and then there's my Nana, grandpa bob, ooh uncle Rad an-"
" Uh, wow, heh, quite a big family " Jacob said before she could continue,feeling like she'd list her whole family tree, Bluey nodded her head
" Yeah, maybe you'll get to meet them. " Bluey added as Jacob thought about the idea, somehow he had mixed feelings, mainly from the fact that, it reminded him on how he had not idea how long he'd be stuck here.
"Um, Listen bluey, we should probably be getting back to bed now I think." He spoke now.
Bluey starred at him for a moment before looking out ahead " oh,alright,but um Jacob " bluey spoke before they got ready to head back inside.
" Hmm? "
" Seeing as you got to see were we play, maybe you could try playing a game with me and Bingo someday " Bluey asked.
" Games huh? "Jacob said as Bluey nodded.
" If before we can find you're home or parents, you should try playing some games, they are really fun "Bluey explained " maybe after school, would you? " the young heeler pup asked as Jacob looked down at her.
" Well, um sure why not? " he said with a nod.
" For real life!?" Bluey spoke more enthusiastically as her tail began to wag.
Jacob looked down at her, before gave a slight smile, " um, yeah, I can try that " as he and the young Heeler seemed quite joyed by the idea, and soon both got up to returned into the house to try and get some sleep once again.
….
The next morning.
" Come on kids, hurry up, breaky needs to be down the hatch and us out the door " Bandit said as Bluey and Bingo laughed and played with their food, while Jacob sat at the table eating his breakfast that was made, a nice toast and oatmeal .
Bluey and bingo quickly finished up their breakfast now as Bandit backed a school bag for each kid, and despite the morning going about as it usually would in the Heeler house on a Monday morning, Bluey seemed more enthusiastic this morning to return to school then she usually did.
" Alright, cone along now, out the door with us " Bandit said as he had finished slipping the bags on each kids back.
Jacob remained sitting there at the table taking the time to finish his breakfast, while Chili tidied up the dishes.
" Okay say bye to Mum " Bandit said as he went over to Chili and gave her a light kiss " see ya later babe " chili giggled
" Bye mum! " the pups said as they enthusiastically headed out
Bluey stopped by Jacob for a moment " Bye Jacob, see you after school " she said with a nod, Jacob nodded in return
" Have fun, both you guys " he spoke to both the siblings, to which Bingo glance up at him and actually gave a light smile.
" Thanks Jacob " she spoke before quickly running off fallowed by bluey.
" Don't give you're father a hard time getting to school " Chili called out rolling her eyes. Soon the girls and Bandit were out the door, Leaving just Jacob and Chili to occupy the house for the day until they returned.
" Here, you done with that plate? " Chili said as Jacob look down with only some small scraps left on his dish, he nodded as Chili smiled took the plate over to the sink,
Sitting there Jacob began to think for a moment and then nodded before getting up.
"Um, here um Mrs. Heeler, let me help you a bit " Jacob spoke gathering some of the clutter off the table.
" Hmm? Oh how kind of you, but no fret, I been clearing tables here for a while " she joked.
" It's no a problem " Jacob said as he gather some of the curtly, " and if there is anything else I can do, help out with around here, let me know, "Jacob stated.
" Oh don't worry Jacob, you needn't bother yourself with stuff like that."
Jacob however just let out a little sigh before speaking " but, It's the least I can do for you guys, I mean, you all you done so much for me in the past couple days, you let me stay here, gave me shelter, took me to the hospital, the least I can do is return the favor "
" Jacob, we did all that because it was the right thing to do and we don't expect or even want anything in return, " chili remarked " what just matters if finding out how we can help you get home " she added as Jacob didn't seem too convinced by her words, prompting her to playfully roll her eyes.
" But hey, if you really want to help, just make sure Bluey and Bingo tidy up their toys " she chuckled." that is the only real chore to keep on top of here. " she and Jacob both shared a little chuckle at that.
Meanwhile
as Bandit drove the girls to school, Bluey sat eagerly in her Carseat. Bandit couldn't help but notice her very cheerful mood this morning, more then usual,
" Something on you're mind mate? You seem pretty excited to get to school today " Bandit spoke.
" I am, really excited! " Bluey said,
"Oh yeah and why is that? " Bandit added.
"Well, because I can finally tell my friends about Jacob,how we have a Human at our home " Bluey said as Bandit glanced back with an unsure look on her face.
" Uuh, wait a minute kiddo, me and you're mum told you already, both you girls, that it might be best if we don't go spreading the news to everyone about Jacob like that " he said to her as Bluey looked rather disappointed.
" Aww, but why not? I want my friends to know about him " Bluey huffed.
" well, yes I understand, but we need to think about Jacob, he's new here and well, he might not be comfy if everyone starts to talk about him. " Bandit explained.
" But why would that be a bad thing? " bluey asked still not understanding.
" Well, because that's just how it is right now, Jacob is not, from here. " Bandit explained,
" Yeah, he's from Canada " Bingo spoke up now " I remembered "
" He says he from Canada, but well, we just need to clarify how he got here " Bandit added. "Listen Bluey can you promise me you won't say anything about Jacob until we can just clarify things better. "
" But people know about him, we took him to see the doctor " Bluey retorted,
"We had too, he needed to see one, but now that we have it's best we approached this carefully, so please, can you promise? just for now "
" Oh, alright then " Bluey said as her ears drooped a little, Bandit could see how much her mood went sour now and he sighed.
"Look, how about this, you can say you made a new friend, okay but that's all? Just until we and you're mum can figure things out more " Bandit spoke as Bluey looked up at him and nodded her head a bit more happy
"Okay dad I promise " Bluey said was she starred out the window, a bit glad she could still tell her friends about Jacob in some way, but how was she going to do it now? she wondered.
