Chapter: A Mother's Promise

On the Island of Themyscira, inside the Prince's Royal Chambers… but mentally, somewhere else… far, far away…

and now, sadly, that burden has fallen upon other shoulders… yours Kal."

For a moment, Kal was silent as he took in everything Rao had just told and shown him about the crazed and corrupt King of the Greeks Gods, more specifically, in how this new insight into Zeus's character concerned himself and his own future, particularly in regards to his future fight against his son Hercules and his Barbarian horde…

… and the more Kal thought about it, the more conflicted he felt about this whole situation he found himself in and the role he now had to play in it.

He had not asked for any of this, yes, sure, he had been wanting to know what his purpose was as the Amazons Prince for a while now, but he had never asked or chosen to get stuck in the middle of the power struggle currently taking place on Mount Olympus between Hera and Zeus.

After all, they were both ruling Olympians and powerful Greek Gods after all, couldn't they sort this conflict out by themselves without involving him and others in their family feud?... apparently not.

Regardless, he was Hera's chosen champion now, for Themyscira and all the Amazon women who called it home, while Hercules was obviously the champion for his father Zeus and all the marauding madmen who worshipped him in turn.

They were two Demigods destined to duel one another to the death under the name of the two respective rulers of Mount Olympus, not unlike two fighting dogs ordered to rip each other to shreds in an arena under their masters' orders.

"The best guard dogs are trained with affection, not fear, after all."

Such an unpleasant comparison made Kal feel more than a little uneasy, it honestly made him feel less like a champion and more like tool, a weapon forged to kill a specific target with little to no input into what he wanted or how he felt about any of this.

Such troubling thoughts also triggered another flash of memory, though this one from long time ago and up until now, long forgotten as well…

"Have you decided upon a name for our new prince yet, your majesty?" Menalippe said as she leaned in closer to gaze at the babe in her queen's arms, who in turn, gazed up curiously at the priestess.

"He already has a name Menalippe." Hippolyta said, smiling down at the babe in her arms who had turned his head and smiled up at her, clearly believing that his… mother wanted his attention, which he was more than happy to give. "His name is Kal."

"Hmm, it's not really a typical Grecian name for a prince though, is it?" Hera said as she adjusted her royal crown and regal robes in the mirror she was standing in front of, preparing herself to address her adoring worshippers, her tone of voice clearly showing her slight disapproval with the choice of the child's name.

Kal felt himself frown as he let the memory play out across his mind, as much as he respected his godmother Hera for all that she had done for him and his mother's people, he couldn't deny that he found her high and mighty attitude a bit much to endure at times, he couldn't imagine how his mother and the other older Amazons felt, having to tip toe around her temper all the time.

"But then again, he is not a typical Demigod, isn't he Queen Hera?" Epione said, quickly intervening, hoping to prevent a potential argument between the two queens right before the ceremony began.

At the healer's sincere question, Hera just smiled wryly. "No, he isn't Epione, and one day, he'll prove himself to be my brother's bastard's better, I'm sure of it." The Sky Goddess said as she finished adjusting her crown and grabbed her Celestial Sceptre that was leaning against the mirror before coming over to the quartet of Amazons currently gathered around the babe in their queen's arms, who became quiet as he seemingly felt Hera's eyes on him.

"Isn't that right, Kal? You'll become a great champion for your mother and all her sisters one day." Hera asked, looking down at the infant before her with a loving smile. "You'll kill Hercules and everyone single one of his Barbarian followers for your new godmother, won't you, dear?"

The echo of Hera's all to important question from his infant years rattled around inside his now older head as Kal continued to grapple with what he knew his future would entail; he obviously hadn't been able to answer the Sky Goddess's question at the time, due to his young age, but now that he was older and knew more, he… he honestly still didn't know…

… he didn't know if he could defeat, much less kill Hercules, the son of a king, a God King at that, and massacre his male followers to the last barbaric man, even in defence of his own home and people, he honestly wasn't sure if he could be that sort of champion…

He quickly pushed those doubts aside for the moment, because truthfully, none of that mattered right now, Kal knew that much for certain, there were more important things than his wants and wishes, he had a royal obligation to fill, a goddess-given one, to be exact, to be the champion everyone expected him to be, these feelings of conflict and questions of morality would just have to wait for another day to be answered.

Because if Rao spoke truthfully, and somehow, deep down inside himself, Kal knew that he did, then defeating Hercules was no longer just about defending his home and protecting his family, but also saving the entire world in the process from a deposed deity's attempt to regain control over it.

All of a sudden, Kal felt the already great weight of his royal responsibilities double and intensify, weighing down even more on his young shoulders.

Dam, this must be how Atas the Unrelenting felt all the time when he was forced to hold up the heavens. Kal thought to himself, shaking his shoulders in a half-hearted attempt to dislodge the feeling from his person, to very little success.

It did succeed in finally waking him up though, as with a loud gasp, Kal quickly sat up in his bed as he suddenly found himself back in the conscious world, the world he knew so well compared to the alien world he had just left.

He looked around, he was back in his royal bedchambers, back in the royal palace, he was home and most importantly of all, he was safe, no Harpies, no Circe and certainly no Zeus…

… he was alone… all alone…

"Krypto?" Kal couldn't help but ask as he glanced around his room upon realising that his faithful canine companion was simply nowhere to be found, which immediately struck him as odd as he always woke up to find Krypto sleeping on the end of his bed, guarding him as he slept, but this time, his best friend was nowhere to be seen. "Krypto?"

His loyal White Wolfdog's unusual absence naturally did not sit well with Kal, causing him to get out of his bed and look around his room, the light in his room was low, very low in fact and even with his incredible night vision, for some unknown reason, Kal found it hard to see through the darkness of this night, had his earlier supernova done something to damage his vision?

Closing his eyes and shaking his head glanced out his window, only to find it pitch black outside, meaning it must be still be night, sometime close to dawn most likely, as his mother had always told him that the night always got darkest just before the dawn, it was a truth that he had always drawn comfort.

After a quick but thorough search, Kal concluded that Krypto was not in his room and decided to go outside looking for his best friend, darkness be damned.

Kal reached the door to his chambers and was just about to open it, when he felt a sudden cold shiver shoot down his spine as his hand stilled on the knob, for a moment, it almost felt like his hand had become frozen to it, as he could barely move his fingers.

It took Kal a long moment to realise what this strange, unwelcome cold feeling coursing through his body was, it was fear

Kal didn't know why, but something inside of him was telling him NOT to open the door and leave the apparent safety of his chambers, something was telling him to crawl back into bed, get back undercovers and sleep or at the very least, wait until morning came first before going outside, when it was less dark…

…for a second, Kal almost listened to it, before he remembered WHO he was, he was the Black Wolf of Paradise Island, the Son of Hippolyta, the Prince of the Amazons, and the new Champion of Themyscira…

…he wasn't afraid of the dark and he certainly wasn't afraid of what might be waiting behind his chamber's door either…

…at least… that what he kept telling himself anyway…

So, steeling his nerves and gritting his teeth, Kal grabbed hold of the knob even tighter than before, turned and pulled the door back so hard that he thought he might tear the whole dam thing off its hinges.

Instead, though, the door swung open and hit the opposite wall with a loud bang that seem to echo throughout the darkened hallway, so much so that Kal was afraid that he might have woken somebody up with such a sudden, loud noise.

But when he peered his head outside, he noticed that no was one there, no one at all, both ends of the hall were as dark and as empty as his bedroom, it was both surprising and a little unsettling to be honest.

It was quite too… a little too quiet, in fact. Kal knew his mother and Philippus always had guards patrolling the palace grounds twenty-four seven, Kal would often hear them walking down the halls at night just before he would fall asleep and when he would wake up early in the morning, even at the most nocturnal of hours, the palace was never fully devoid of activity.

… except for tonight that is, he didn't know exactly what it was, but something was different tonight, something was just… off, it was too dark outside his room and way too quiet as well, Kal listened for a long moment and found he heard nothing… nothing at all, no guards walking or talking further down the palace corridors, not even the sound of soft breathing from Amazon's asleep in their rooms, just silence… dead silence.

Kal felt the same cold shiver from before return tenfold and this time, he almost gave into it and closed his door again, before once more, stopping himself at the last second, instead he forced himself to step through the open door and into the darkness of the hall, once again, he forced himself to face his fears…

…after all, it was not the first time he had woken up in a strange dark place, seemingly all by himself, not even the first time in the last twenty-four hours for that matter, he didn't shy away from the darkness in Rao's Temenos and he definitely wouldn't shy away from the darkness in his own home either.

So bravely, but cautiously, Kal left the confines of his royal chambers behind and quietly crept down the palace halls, to try figure out what was going on here and why he was all alone in the palace…

But what Kal did not realise, was just like the last time that he woke up and found himself alone in a dark place… was that he wasn't really alone at all…

Meanwhile…

"Persephone, you want my son to live with you… in the Underworld?" Hippolyta asked slowly, her tone portraying both her surprise and disbelief at what the Spring Goddess was proposing.

"Just until he's older Hippolyta, old enough to properly defend himself against whatever Zeus might throw at him in the future." Persephone clarified from where she sat opposite Hippolyta on the sofa in her son's chambers, the pair having moved from the bed in order to avoid disturbing Kal's rest.

"The House of Hades is a fortress that has never been taken by neither Gods or Giants alike in its long existence after the dark days of the Titanomachy." Persephone stated in what sounded an awful lot like a practiced pitch. "Not even Zeus will dare come thundering down there, especially not after that unpleasant… incident… involving Hypnos and his mother Nyx, to put it simply, Kal will be safe with us, at the very least, safer than he will be here on Themyscira."

Safer than he will be with you, Hippolyta could clearly hear what the Spring Goddess was saying in-between her actual words, and it filled her both with anger and shame at the same time."Your majesty, I-

"Now, before you say anything Hippolyta, I already know Kal would never leave here without Krypto and I wouldn't ask him too either, we would be glad take him in as well, I'm sure Cerberus and his brothers would love having the both of them around." Persephone said smiling at the Wolfdog still lying on the bed, whose ears noticeably perked up at the mention of the Three Headed Hellhound.

"As for his training and education as Themyscira's new champion, my husband and my friends are all willing to take on that responsibility, to help prepare him for his fight with Hercules when the time comes and for as long as he resides in the Underworld, I will personally see to his care myself." Persephone said sincerely, looking her fellow female ruler in the eye. "I will look after him for you, that's a promise Hippolyta, from one queen to another."

For a long moment, Hippolyta said nothing, she simply sat there as she considered Persephone's unexpected proposal, thinking it over in her head, her eyes eventually falling back on Kal's sleeping face as she did so.

It made sense, the rational part of her brain reluctantly had to admit. The Underworld was not a place that many mortals or immortals would dare to tread, at least not without permission from the realm's rulers first, and from what she had heard of Hades, he was not someone who took people trespassing into his domain lightly and Persephone's formidable reputation spoke for itself.

What's more, for all of their differing moral codes, the Law of Hospitality was held sacred amongst the entire Greek Pantheon, especially among the ruling Olympians, between the King and Queen of the Underworld as well as their giant three headed attack dog, there was no doubt that Kal would be safer down there with them as his guardians, safer from Zeus and his monstrous minions, as well as Alkyone and her circle sisters.

Ultimately, if Kal was safer with them than he was with her… than maybe it would better for him to leave Themyscira, so that he might enjoy a few more years of peace and quiet before he had to become the champion that their tribe needed him to be.

The more she thought about it, the more it occurred to Hippolyta, that in this moment, that she was being given way out, a way out of this whole difficult and complicated situation that Zeus, Hera and Hercules had put her in all those years… all she had to do was agree and then just maybe, things could go back to the way they were…

Then she remembered the promise she had made long ago, not to her Hera or her sisters, but to someone else…

"Your parents can't be with you anymore, little one." She said softly and suddenly, not really knowing why she had even said it, as despite the boy's alarming awareness of his surroundings, the queen did believe he could actually understand what she was saying to him right now.

To her immense surprise however, the boy stopped wriggling almost immediately and looked at her with wide eyes before slowly looking back down, becoming completely silent.

A moment later, the queen looked down again when she felt the blue-eyed babe in her arms begin to cry, his little body shaking and shuddering with every grief-stricken sob he made against her chest.

Hippolyta watched as the child continued to cry and immediately felt horrible for what she had just said, realising to little too late, that on some level the boy had understood what she had told him and he was now being forced to deal with the first major loss in his life at far too early an age.

The Queen of the Amazon's knew she had to do something, because for better or for worse, he was her responsibility now and only one thing came to her mind.

"There, there, come now little one." She said soothingly as she brought the boy closer to her face and began to gently wipe away his tears with the back of fingers. "Come on, no more of that now, come on."

After a while of wiping away his tears, the boy looked up at her, he had ceased his outright sobbing and shaking, but a few tears still leaked out from the corners of his blue eyes and he was sniffling sadly almost constantly now.

"There you go." She said smiling warmly and the boy seemed to smile back at her through the last of his tears.

"I know it hurts, but you are going to have to be a brave boy now." Hippolyta told him honestly, but not unkindly as she stroked his back in comfort, the boy stopped sniffling as she did so.

"I lost my mother when I was young and so did many of my sisters." Hippolyta admitted to the infant who seemed to be listening to her now with surprising intensity, his awareness of the world around him astounded her.

"But… if it makes you feel better, I promise that I'll look after you, just until your strong enough to stand on your own two feet." She then raised her hand and gently began to wipe away the last of the tears from his face-

-only for the boy to reach out with his tiny hand and grab a tight hold of her finger.

Hippolyta straightened in surprise at this and for a moment she didn't know how to respond before her gaze began to soften again and she smiled.

"Well, well, aren't you strong." Hippolyta said as she playfully tried to pull her finger free of his grasp, the babe giggling as she did so while the queen marvelled at the child's already formidable strength at such a young age.

Hippolyta remembered how Kal had curled up in her arms after that tender moment between them, falling fast asleep in her warm embrace in mere moments, showing his trust and complete faith in her to keep him safe.

The memory made her heart both warm and ache at the same time.

She remembered how brave he had been when she had presented him before the entire island for his coronation as their new prince, she remembered how he had saved her and Diana from the deadly bite of the venomous Amphisbaena Viper when he was still just a babe.

She remembered the first time he had called her mother; of course she did, it had been his first word after all.

She remembered how just today, he bravely stood up against an Olympian God just to defend her honour and she remembered just how furious she had been with Alkyone when she had implied that her love for him was a lie.

She remembered that having Kal as her son was the greatest gift she had ever been given, only rivalled by getting to have Diana as her daughter and she remembered that it was a gift that she did not deserve.

Most of all though, she remembered the promise she had made to him and reminded herself that if Kal did not get walk away from his goddess given responsibility, then neither did she… and she reminded herself that he was her responsibility.

"No." Hippolyta said finally, looking away from Kal and back at Spring Goddess who had been patiently waiting for her answer. "Thank you for your kind and generous offer, your majesty… but I'm afraid my answer is no."

A long awkward silence ruled the room for a long moment as Persephone said nothing, she simply stared at her fellow queen for a while before sighing almost sadly. "Hippolyta, I really think you should reconsider-."

"No." Hippolyta said turning to face the Spring Goddess sitting next to her with a glare, her voice suddenly becoming very firm and very fierce as well, the Warrior Queen was tired of everyone, both Amazon and Olympian alike, questioning her choices and decisions, especially when it concerned Kal. "I've made up my mind about this Persephone, Kal is my responsibility and he is my son, NOT yours."

An even longer, even more awkward silence ruled the prince's chambers after that royal declaration, broken only by Krypto's concerned whine as both Hippolyta and Persephone glared at each other with furious eyes from across the sofa, both woman refusing to be the first one to back down in this sudden, unexpected staring contest.

The last time they had met, Hippolyta had been the one cowed by the Underworld Queen's cold unnerving stare and intimidating ethereal eyes, but not this time, she was the Queen of the Amazons and she knew that she had to be stronger than that this time around.

"Oh really? He's your son? Is he?" Persephone asked finally, breaking not her gaze, but rather the simmering silence going on between them. "You could've have fooled me there Hippolyta."

There were several very uncomfortable implications to Persephone's question and Hippolyta did not like any of them. "And what is that supposed to mean?"

There was a sudden loud clatter of metal and Hippolyta saw that Persephone had used her vines to drop both half's of Alkyone now broken sword on the table in front of her, Hippolyta could still the blood running along the edges of the blades tip and she couldn't help but shudder as another very unpleasant memory suddenly reared its ugly head.

Alkyone holding an infant Kal upside down by his leg… Kal crying in fear… the knife in her hand…

"It means your majesty, that we both want this boy to be safe." Persephone said, unknowingly pulling Hippolyta out of her nightmarish memory and back to the present conversation. "The difference is Hippolyta, in my realm, the people who wish to harm him are locked up tight for the moment, not walking around with weapons in their hands."

Hippolyta could tell where this conversation was and she hated it because she knew that Persephone had a point, a really good point for that matter. "Persephone, I-."

"I can literally smell the lust for your son's blood coming off that bald bitch Alkyone in waves, Hippolyta, among… other things." Persephone said, her nose wrinkling in disgust as she remembered what other depraved thoughts and feelings that she had gotten a glimpse of when she had the Captain of the Queens Circle in her grasp. "What I see when I look into that woman's soul makes me sick Hippolyta, and she is not the only Amazon on this island who does so."

Hippolyta of course, was already aware of this fact, painfully aware, she had seen the way some of her sisters had looked at Kal over the years, with expressions ranging from disgust by his mere presence on their island to outright barely contained contempt when they had to refer to him as their prince in her presence, her son's adorably endearing nature had slowly won over many women on the island, but not all of them, and she knew he likely never would either.

"What exactly do you suggest I do? Persephone?" Hippolyta defensively snapped at the Queen of the Underworld, her expression half defiant and half defeated, matching exactly how she felt in that moment. "Imprison every Amazon who so much as glares at Kal?" Split my tribe into two? Go to war within my own kingdom? Make my sisters weak and divided when Hercules comes to enslave us all?

"I suggest you make a choice Hippolyta; the choice I know you've been avoiding making for years now." Persephone responded sternly, looking over at Kal, still lying unconscious on the bed with Krypto still by his side, she kept her gaze firmly on the boy's slowly rising chest as Hippolyta joined her staring. "The choice between the boy you love, the boy who loves you, the boy who might just end up saving everything and everyone you love as well, and a bunch entitled bitter bitches who all call you their queen to your face and secretly sharpen their swords behind your back, waiting for the moment you aren't looking to sink them into your sons' heart."

"I suggest you start doing what's best for your Little Fallingstar, I suggest you start actually being his mother." Persephone all but snarled as she looked at the Amazon Queen beside sitting her.

At this very cutting but unfortunately true response, all the usually fearless Warrior Queen could do was close her eyes and lower her head in shame, even so, she could still feel Persephone's uncompromising glare on her face.

Eventually, though, Persephone dropped her cold stare and let out a more sympathetic sigh. "I understand it's not an easy choice to make Hippolyta and deep down, I know there is still some part of you that is still afraid of history repeating itself, and for the record, I don't blame you for that, the pains of the past are hard to ignore, I know, I really do, but this is a choice you need to make sooner, rather than later for both you and your son's sake, before it's too late… before someone else makes it for you."

Once again, Hippolyta found herself not likening the implications of Persephone's words, any of them.

"Why do you care?" Hippolyta suddenly asked, finally asked opening her eyes and raising her head to look the Spring Goddess directly in her emerald eyes as she asked what had been plaguing her mind since the Queen of the Underworld had chosen to randomly show up earlier today at the island's training grounds, unannounced and uncalled for. "Why do you care so much about all of… this Persephone? About my son? Why did you come to my island today? Why did you give Kal that Hellhound Horn?"

These were the questions that had been plaguing Hippolyta's mind since Persephone had first walked into Kal's room and before she left, the Warrior Queen would have her answers.

Surprisingly, the usually unflappable Queen of the Underworld was taken slightly aback by Hippolyta's questioning, so much so, that she seemed to struggle to find the right the words to respond with. "I care because I don't want Hercules wreaking havoc on Themyscira and the rest of the mortal realm any more than you do Hippolyta, I already told you that, if you all truly believe that your prince is the key to stopping Zeus's Bastard, than I want to help him…

"It's not just that though, is it Persephone?" Hippolyta interrupted; her eyes now narrowed in suspicion of the Spring Goddess's intentions towards Kal.

For the next few moments, Persephone said nothing, she simply sighed and looked over at where Kal lay unconscious on his bed with an almost melancholy expression on her beautiful face.

"I won't lie to you Hippolyta… when I look at your son… I do see something of my Zagreus in him."

That honestly unexpected response took Hippolyta back, she had heard rumours about the short-lived Prince of the Underworld, Zagreus, the God of Blood, the Heir of Hades, and the Son of Persephone, but she had never been able to verify them, mostly because she knew better than to ask about it.

From what little she did know however, that was a sentiment also shared atop Mount Olympus as well, whenever Persephone visited the floating mountain kingdom, every God and Goddess up there knew better than to ask her about what exactly happened, including Hera, who was not known for biting her tongue about any matter involving her pantheon.

Whether out of compassion for her brother and niece's loss, or fear of incurring their respective wraths, even the high and mighty Queen of the Heavens stepped lightly around the subject.

"My son came early into the world Hippolyta, too early, he was so small and weak when he was born, but he was so beautiful as well." Persephone said sadly, her emerald eyes becoming glossy with barely restrained tears as she thought about her now lost child.

A sudden whine caught both queen's attentions as Krypto surprisingly got up from his place beside Kal on the bed and padded over to where they sat, the White Wolfdog gave another concerned whimper as he nuzzled Persephone's hands with his nose before setting his furry head in her lap and looked up at her with warm red eyes.

The Spring Goddess, seemingly grateful for the canine's concerned presences, stroked his long ears as she managed to smile through her sadness. "I did everything in my power to keep alive Hippolyta, to give him the chance of life that he deserved, but it wasn't enough… I… wasn't enough."

Hippolyta said nothing, instead simply chose to place a comforting hand on her fellow queen's shoulder, upon which Persephone gave her a grateful look, no words needed to be said, Hippolyta knew the pain of losing loved ones all too well…

Her mother, her sisters… so many of her sisters…

"I am the Queen of the Underworld and the Princess of Plants, I have power over both the forces of life and death, and yet, even with all my power, I couldn't save the one life that meant the most to me." As she said this, Persephone was barely able to bite back a bitter sob as she tried to regain her regal composure. "I don't want to see that happen to your son, Hippolyta and know you don't want that as well."

"I only had a short time with my Little Sprout, but in that short time, I fell in love with him, more than I thought I possibly could, I'd gladly give up my all of my wealth and power if it just meant that I got to have him back." Persephone continued quietly, slowly stroking Krypto's white fur, taking solace in his bodily warmth.

Just like how I feel in love with Kal the night he came into my life, Hippolyta thought to herself and once again, the Queen of the Amazons felt a certain kinship with the Queen of the Underworld over her love for her son who ever so briefly brought so much joy into her life.

Hippolyta could only hope that the joy Kal had brought into her life wouldn't be nearly as short-lived as Zagreus had for Persephone.

"Hippolyta, I say this to you as women whose decision to run away from home and elope with an older man nearly caused the mother of all droughts to happen all across Ancient Greece." Persephone turning to look at Hippolyta after wiping away the tears from her eyes as the Amazon Queen let her hand slip from her shoulder.

"Weve both made arrogant, selfish, and vindictive decisions during our reigns as queens, but at some point, Hippolyta, whether others agree or not, what happened long ago no longer matters, the only thing that matters is what we choose to do right now, with the power that we do have to protect those that we love."

Both Persephone and Hippolyta once again looked over at where Kal still lay unconscious, this time, it was the Spring Goddess who placed a comforting hand on her fellow queen's shoulder.

"This boy is more than just another Demigod; he is more than just your tribe's prince or your island's champion." Persephone told the Warrior Queen; her eyes and voice surprisingly soft. "He's not Hercules and he is most certainly not Thrax, he's your son Hippolyta… and right now… he needs his mother."

Persephone, had no idea just how true her words would soon turn out to be.

But for the moment, Hippolyta simply said nothing for a moment as she allowed Persephone words to sink in, her eyes eventually settled on the emerald encrusted silver bands that were wrapped tight around her son's wrists, since the first night Kal had come into her life and in all his years growing up on her island, her son had worn those bands around his wrists every single day of his life…

…and Hippolyta realised that he just might end up wearing for the rest of his life as well…

A sudden and terrible guilt pierced its way into the brave Warrior Queen's heart as she suddenly realised, that she had never bothered to ask her son how he felt about them, were they too tight? Did they hurt him? Kal had never complained about them to her, but she had seen him attempt to pull on from time to time to little success, only to stop whenever he saw her watching him do so.

Even then, Kal had never asked her to remove them for him… but then again, she had never offered to either, probably because she had never told him that she and Hera were the only ones who could possibly do so. But it was irrelevant anyway, she couldn't take them off, it was a fact that she had to remind herself of more than once over the years, like it or not, those bands were her sisterhoods only insurance that their champion would never be able to successfully turn against them, even if most of them did not know it.

Over the years, Hippolyta, had wondered what would happen if she ever actually had to use the bracelet around her wrist against Kal in the future, she told herself a million times that it did not matter, because Kal would never turn against his sister's tribe and more importantly, it did not matter because he would never find out since she would never have to use it anyway…

…it did not matter because when… if… the time ever came that she did indeed have use it against Kal, Hippolyta knew she would do what needed to be done… what was required of her as Queen of the Amazons.

… what was for the good of her daughter and all of her sisters as well, if the time ever came that she had to use this bracelet power against Kal, they would understand, they would agree with her, that it was for the best.

… but would Kal understand, if he ever found out that is, would he understand that what was done to him was done not out of cruelty, but out of concern for the well being of others, would he understand why he had to keep wearing those bands, possibly for the rest of his life, would he be able to forgive her for keeping him bound like this… or… would he hate her for it…

Ultimately, it didn't matter, it was for Kal's own good as well and eventually he would realise that as well, if the revelation of what his bands were for ever had to come out, she had told herself again and again whenever that uncomfortable question came up in her mind, as long as he was kept under her control, then he could never potentially grow up to become a threat to her tribe that her sisters believed needed to be destroyed.

It was for his own good, as long as Kal remained bound to her will, then her son would safe… as long as he remained bound to her… like a dog tied to its master's leash…

like a dog… to its masters… leash…

masters… leash…

Hippolyta felt another flash of memories hit her like a punch to the gut, and considering what they were about, the Amazon Queen honestly would have preferred getting punched instead.

"I grow tired of your impudence, Hippolyta, fighting against your fate is futile."

A cold shudder ran down Hippolyta's spine and she touched her throat as the unpleasant sensation of an iron collar being yanked hard around her neck suddenly came to her back after so many years of successfully repressing, as she remembered Hercules… educating her… for the very first time about her place in Man's World, the place of all women, but especially of Amazonian women like herself, when he taken her and so many of her sister's captive after their first battle against his Barbarian Horde…

…the battle that she had led them all into… the battle that they… that she… had lost…

"You have lost this war, women and your prideful defiance will no longer be tolerated, you will learn obedience, slave."

She knew her decision was risky, Hippolyta had heard stories about Hercules long before she had ever laid eyes on the man, of course she had, how couldn't she? The latest up and coming Son of Zeus had made quite the reputation for himself as the biggest butchering bastard in all of Ancient Greece, a mountain of a man who was tall enough to look down upon both Gods and Giants alike, a warrior of unparallel skill and strength who had slain both men and monsters by the score with ease.

The Demigod who had killed the Barbarian Warlord, Erginus the Egregious in the single combat, one of the Amazons greatest enemies from the north who had one of the few armies large enough to threaten their empire. The Demigod who had claimed Erginus head, horde, and club for his own, before going on to conqueror all of the other Barbarian warbands throughout Greece, quickly turning what had once been a mere handful of savages into one of the largest and most formidable armies the Grecian World had ever seen.

But Hippolyta had not allowed any of these tales dissuade her from her decision to lead her sisters into battle against this new upstart warmonger though, she felt it was both her duty and her destiny to do so, not just as the Queen of the Amazons, but as the daughter of Otrera as well.

Erginus had been one of the Amazons greatest enemies during the reign of her mother, Queen Otrera, who had been the Amazon Queen to break the Barbarians power base in the north, destroying their mountain kingdom and scattering their horde's once impressive numbers to the four winds, reducing their tribe's ancient enemy to little more than wandering warbands of brutes and bandits.

It had been a great victory for their tribe, but like so many great victories, it had not come without cost.

Her mother had done the impossible and dealt a crippling blow to their greatest enemy, cutting Erginus's arm off and forcing the wounded Barbarian Warlord into a full-blown retreat with what little was left of his army, but sadly, her mother had also fallen in the process, the injuries from Erginus club had been too much for Queen Otrera to endure.

Her mother had died so that her daughters and sisters may live, that is what her mother's generals had told when they had returned from the battle with their queen's body in tow along with all of their other fallen sisters after the war was won.

That fact, though true, had been a cold comfort to Hippolyta at the time, her mind focused only on revenge to help her ignore her grief over mother's death, to avoiding thinking about how if she had been there, then maybe she could have saved her.

She had wanted to go with her mother to face Erginus in his mountain hole, but Queen Otrera had strictly forbidden it, insisting that her daughter stay behind in the safety of their Empire's capitol city of Amazonia and continue her royal training with her teachers, promising her daughter that she could join her in their glorious campaign when she was ready.

Hippolyta still remembered what her mother had told her right she had left to face, when she had asked her mother what would happen if she did not come back from the war in the north alive, her mother just smiled and stroked her cheek like she always did when she thought her daughter was worrying too much.

"Then you will be queen, Hippolyta and I know you will lead the Amazons into a better and brighter future, if my death is the cost of making that future a reality, then it is a price I am willing to pay, you are worth dying for, my Little Moonlight."

On the night they had burned her mother's body, as she herself had thrown down the torch that had lit her mother's pyre alight, before she went to go pick up her mother's crown and place it atop her own head, that she would avenge her mother's death and slay Erginus herself, she swore as the new Queen of the Amazons that she would finish what her mother started and destroy the Barbarian threat once and for all, to the many righteous cheers of her fellow Amazons.

Over the next couple of years of her rule, she done exactly that, wiping out the Barbarian horde one warband at a time, but despite her best efforts to hunt Erginus down so she could cut off his other arm and then use it to beat the brutish bastard to death with it, the old warlord remained just out of her reach, holed up somewhere in the mountains, still licking his wounds from the well-deserved defeat her mother had served him.

So, when Hippolyta had heard that Erginus had finally been slain himself by this most recent Son of Zeus, she found herself feeling very conflicted, on one hand, she felt pleased to know her mother's murder was finally dead and defeated, but on the other, she felt both frustrated and angry that she wasn't the one to end his miserable marauding life herself… and she also felt afraid as well…

…because even with only one arm, Erginus was still said to be a formidable opponent, how else could the old warlord have possibly kept his throne after losing such a legendary battle to her mother, an Amazon Queen, especially given the Barbarian felt about warrior women, the same way they felt about all women, if this newest Demigod, this… Hercules… could kill Erginus when even her mother failed to…

Ultimately though, it didn't matter, Hippolyta refused to back down to this new enemy, if she couldn't avenge her mother's death herself, then Hippolyta at least intended to finish what her mother started by putting an end to this half-breed Barbarian Warlord's world conquering ambitions before he could get any stronger, and this time, hopefully wipe out the Barbarian Horde for good.

Besides, plenty of Demigod Sons of Zeus had been slain by warriors lesser than herself throughout history, and she was an Amazon, one of the greatest warrior races to have ever existed, she was not afraid of any Demigod, she knew she and her sisters were ready, she knew that they could win…

…oh Gods, how wrong she had been…

"You might have been a queen before, Hippolyta, but now, you are a dog and this is your leash, bitch!"

That was what Hercules had told right before he had forced himself on her for the first time, when he had forced her to bear Thrax for him… needless to say, it was a very unpleasant memory that she did not like revisiting…

But then, just as those unpleasant memories once more began to fade from her mind, they were immediately replaced by other, even more shameful memories…

"You will care for this boy Hippolyta, and raise him alongside your daughter as though he was your own son." Hera explained simply and from the Sky Goddess's tone, it did not sound like a request.

"What!" Hippolyta couldn't help but exclaim loudly in shock, staring down at the still knocked out boy in her arms before looking at Hera in sheer disbelief. "No! Queen Hera! Please! You cannot be serious-."

"I have never been more serious about anything, Hippolyta." Hera replied coolly and with narrowed eyes, her stern expression clearly implying that she would not accept no as an answer.

"But! But! Your majesty?" The Queen of the Amazons argued, sounding more and more alarmed with each word as more unpleasant memories came rushing back to her. "If what you say is true, and that his strength will one day rivals Hercules, then what will stop him from turning on my sisters and I when he becomes a man?"

"Calm yourself Hippolyta." Hera ordered swiftly and once again; the Warrior Queen fell obediently silent at the Sky Goddess's command.

"I have already considered that possibility and I have created a solution, that I believe will neutralise it." With a snap of her divine fingers, the three small objects that were attached to her sceptre floated over to Hera's hand, two silver wrist bands and a silver women's bracelet, all three divine items were decorated by a large green emerald placed in the middle of them.

A moment later, all three objects shot out of the Sky Goddess's grip and launched themselves at both the queen and the young child in her arms, the pair of silver bands snapped around both of the boy's small wrists while the silver bejewelled bracelet slipped itself over the queen's right hand.

"This divine bracelet and these bands will allow you to… restrain him, should you ever feel the need to." The Sky Goddess explained as Hippolyta watched the divine bracelet settle itself onto her wrist. "If the boy ever proves himself as treacherous as most men often are, simply press down hard on the emerald in the bracelet and it will do the rest, I assure you Hippolyta, he will not be able to threaten any of your sisters afterwards."

The Queen of the Amazons examined the gifted silver bracelet as well as the pair silver bands around the boy's wrists carefully, the green gems embedded in each separate piece of divine jewellery seem to glow with barely contained power.

"But Hippolyta, let me be clear when I say this, do NOT use this gift I have given you unless you feel it is absolutely necessary, unless you feel you have no other choice." Hera said, sounding deadly serious before smiling wryly. "The best attack dogs are trained with affection, not fear, after all."

Hippolyta stared at the bracelet on her wrist for a moment longer before finally sighing in begrudging acceptance and looking up at the Sky Goddess once again.

"I understand, as you command, Queen Hera." Hippolyta said resolutely with head held high. "I will raise this boy, this Demigodling, for your glory, for Themyscira, for my sisters, for our daughters, for my Little Sunlight."

Hippolyta looked down at the sleeping child in arms as she declared. "For our vengeance on the bastard Hercules."

For MY vengeance on Hercules… Hippolyta thought to herself as she looked down at the silver bracelet on her wrist with disgust while thinking back on some of her past choices with a new found sense of horror, Rhea's Grace… What have I done? What have I allowed to happen? When did I become a slave master?

When did I allow myself to become no better than Hercules…

You didn't allow anything to happen Hippolyta, a familiar, more soothing voice told her, one that sounded so strangely like her mother's voice, it was the same voice that always came to her whenever she found herself feeling conflicted about a serious decision, you are nothing like that monster and you did nothing wrong, you only did what was required of you as Queen of the Amazons, what was expected of you by your sisters, what Hera needed you to do at the time…

I… I only did… what was necessary… what I had to do… to protect my daughter and sisters… Hippolyta mentally repeated to herself, as she often had over the years whenever she found herself questioning her choices as queen of her tribe.

Of course you did, no one can fault you for that, there was no other choice, the boy could not be trusted, no more than any man can be, no more than he can be trusted now…

But… Hippolyta looked up from her wrist to gaze at her Little Fallingstar still lying comatose on his bed, but I love him… he's my son…

Oh really? He's your son, is he?

Hippolyta was shocked when a new voice in her head repeated Persephone's earlier question, louder and fiercer, angrier than her mother's wise words and soothing tones, the voice in her head that always reassured her own decisions as a ruler.

This new voice's sudden presence was so unexpected that it took Hippolyta a moment to recognise exactly whose voice it was… it was hers.

Lara…

The beautiful blonde women whose face continued to haunt her dreams, whose eyes shone like blue stars in the darkness just like Kal's… Hippolyta blinked and for a moment, she could've sworn that she saw Lara's face staring at her, glaring at her…

You still sometimes wake up late at night in terror from your nightmares of what Hercules did to you, the haunting echo of Lara's voice nearly forgotten voice hissed at her from the darkest corner of her mind, the corner she had long tried to ignore, but clearly could no longer, you still remember the feeling of a collar pulled tight around your neck and cold chains shackled around your wrists…

…Hippolyta subconsciously rubbed her wrists as phantom pains ran up her arms while a cold shiver shot down her spine as the memories came flashing back… each one more vivid than the last…

you still remember your tribe being enslaved against their will by that bastard's horde, you remember the fear, the pain, the helplessness, you begged the Sisters of Fate every day and every night for deliverance from this terrible fate, for you and all of your sisters…

but you didn't hesitate to let his be taken away from him when he was just an innocent babe… and you dare to call yourself a mother, to call yourself HIS mother… you're not a mother, you're a master, just like him…

Hippolyta didn't know which was worse, the fact that Lara was comparing her to Hercules, or the fact that she might not be wrong.

No, I'm not like him, I love Kal, and I never took his freedom away from him, Hippolyta mentally tried to defend herself from what felt like a vengeful shade's accusations, pleading with her to understand why she did what she had to, like she knew her mother and sisters all would. Hera was the one who put the bands around his wrists, not me, I did-

You didn't do what? Nothing? Lara's vindictive voice hissed at her, almost spitting the word out, That's right! You did nothing! Nothing at all! You didn't fight her decision! You didn't even try to! You would have never allowed your daughter to be chained in such a fashion! But him! You didn't even bat an eye at him being bound and yet you still claim to love him? Tell me your majesty, do you imprison everyone you love or just those who happen to be born male?

At this tragically true, Hippolyta could give no excuse that would hope to satisfy Lara's ghost maternal fury, she had nothing but her shame to offer.

So, I ask you, Hippolyta, Queen of the Hypocrites and Murderer of Men, how much longer will you continue to do nothing, how much longer will allow someone you claim to love be in mortal danger? Lara's voice asked with a hateful sneer, until the next time MY son lays comatose before you, or worse, when he's lying dead at your feet!

NO! Hippolyta screamed inside her own head, her hand coming up to her mouth, barely being able to keep her inner turmoil from becoming her outer turmoil, as images of Kal's potential future death assaulted her mind, images of her Little Fallingstar lying in a pool of his blood, first Hercules and then Alkyone standing over her son's lifeless body with a bloody weapon in hand, smiling sadistically.

No, I won't let that happen, Hippolyta silently swore to herself, to Lara, to her own mother… to… she didn't even know anymore, all that she knew that she wouldn't break this promise she had made, a mother's promise… I promise you… I won't let that happen… to your… to my son…

Then prove it, Lara's said, her voice hard but less hostile now as she seemingly faded away back into the dark corner of her mind, Not just to me, but to yourself as well, Hippolyta, prove that you really are this boy's mother…

Hippolyta's eyes once more fell upon on the emerald encrusted silver bands around her son's wrists, their green glow making her feel sick and only reconfirming her decision. I won't let my fear of the past repeating itself control my choices anymore, not when it comes to Kal's well-being.

Looking at the silver bracelet on her wrist, Hippolyta pulled out a long thin key from the bottom of it, hidden so well inside the silver piece of jewellery that it was practically invisible to anyone who didn't already know where to look…

…but Hippolyta did, she always knew exactly where it was…

The Queen of the Amazons got up from where she sat on the sofa and made her way over to her son's bed, bending down, she looked at her son's still sleeping face and took a moment to gently brush his hair back before gently picking up his left wrist and inserting the tip of the key into a small hole near the bottom of the band.

Click!

With a simple turn and a metallic click, the silver band came off her son's arm and fell beside him on the bed, Hippolyta than gently lowered her son's left arm and repeated the process with his right one, inserting the long silver key into the band.

Click!

With another simple turn and a click, the second silver band fell off of Kal's wrist to land next the other one beside him, Hippolyta then laid his left arm back down and slid the silver key back into the bottom of her own bracelet before picking up the two silver bands.

The Queen of the Amazons looked at the silver bands in her left hand, the bands that had kept Kal bound to her since the night he had first entered her life, before looking back at her son's face and smiled as she leaned down to stroke it.

Hippolyta knew that this was a risky decision, she knew there were going to be consequences for the choice she had just made, but she didn't care, the potential risks and future consequences were worth it for Kal. I will be better from now on, I promise you that, my Little Fallingstar.

Greetings to all my fellow fanfic readers and writers, I hope you all enjoyed Superman, Son of Hippolyta Chapter 27: A Mother's Promise, to all of you who have been angry with Hippolyta's maternal inaction as of late, you can consider this the turning point in her arc, I know it's been a major source of frustration for many of you, but considering her recently revealed history with Thrax, I felt it was very important from a writing stand point that she fail and faulter for a while before truly rising to her responsibilities not just as Queen of the Amazons, but also as Kal's mother.

Hippolyta being continuously caught between her responsibilities as both a queen and a mother has been a running theme in her story so far and best represented here in this chapter by the voices of her own mother Queen Otrera and Kal's biological mother Lara-El being her respective shoulder angels, with Otrera representing the proud warrior queen of the past and Lara representing the more protective and caring mother of the present.

As of this chapter, Hippolyta is finally choosing to listen to Lara's voice over her mother's and stop letting her fear of the past repeating itself dictate her decisions when it comes Kal, which is why she chooses to remove his bands, a decision she knows she will have to face consequences for when Hera eventually finds out…

…As for Hippolyta's more hands-off approach to dealing with the threat that Alkyone and her sisters pose to Kal, that is coming to an end and she will definitely be taking a more hands on approach from now on, needless to say, the Queen's Circle are in for a nasty surprise in the future…

Anyway, onto the next important announcement for this story, for a while now, I have been rereading a lot of my old chapters and after a lot of careful consideration, I have concluded that some of earlier writing needs to updated, due to my writing skills having improved since I started this story, creating a notable skill gap between my first couple of chapters and where we are now.

Not only that, but certain earlier elements of my story simply aren't meshing well with other later elements of my story and need to be corrected, this is something I've been wrestling with for a while now and I've decided that this needs to be done, but rather than take this whole story down and uploading it again after revising each chapter, I've decided to simply keep on writing and fix up the older chapters as I go along.

As of right now, chapters 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 have all been updated and revised, leaving only chapters 3, 4, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 left, which I will do gradually from now on, letting you know with each new chapter published if an old chapter has been updated.

Keep in mind, the story will still be mostly the same, so whether or not you choose to go back and read these earlier chapters is entirely up to you, I just want to keep you all informed of the progress of this story.

One new addition to the updated chapters though is my List of References, as many of you may have noticed by now, I am a fan of referencing other pieces of media in my work, something I've done in every chapter I've written so far, these lists therefore allow me to keep better track of what I have referenced so far and allow you my readers to get a better of idea of the various sources of which most of my writing inspiration comes from.

I must once again apologise for the long hiatus, unfortunately, a truly terrible combination of severe burnout, deep depression, serious sickness and family issues have prevented me from writing at a quicker pace, though I am hoping that will start turning around now with this chapter as things in my life have now improved as well.

As always, I recommend my friend and Greek mythology expert Luke5921 Superman story, Kal Son of Odin which is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with some DC elements added into it, so if you are a fan of both Superman and Marvel, which I AM and I know many of you are, go check it out, it keeps getting better and better with each new chapter.

Also, if any of you would like to support my work in other ventures, I have YouTube channel under the same name as my fanfic account, T-Rexcellent Reviews, if you are interested, please consider giving it a look, a like and subscription as it would really help me out.

Now onto answering some more fan questions from all of you guys…

XxGargantuaxX: Yeah, Kal's has had it pretty rough so far in this story, being a pawn in the Games of the Greek Gods, but he'll get through it, like Hippolyta promised him in the prologue, he's the Man of Steel after all, he'll be okay. Though I would really say that Hippolyta is using Kal any more than she is using any of the Amazons under her command, as I've said before, she's in a complex and difficult situation with no real easy answer to her and her tribe's problem, Hercules is coming to enslave her and her sisters again, and this time, there won't be any divine intervention saving them if they lose the war against his Barbarian horde, such a predicament would make anyone desperate enough to do something like this.

Joe-El: Thanks for the potential sequel title idea, mate, I appreciate it and I'll keep that in mind if I do decide to break this story into a series of smaller stories, but if I were to use it that sort of title in the future, I would probably go with Protector of Earth, rather than Gaia in order to avoid potential confusion as the Primordial Goddess herself might end up appearing in this story, still, once again, thank you for the idea and please feel free to share more of them in the future.

jornamin4: Good news mate, more is finally here, I hope it was worth the wait, my friend.

Luke5921: Thanks, as always for the support Luke, your best mate.

Sorcerersupreme14: The answer is simple, Athena is just a very wordy woman who takes pride in her position as the Greek Goddess of both Wisdom and War, as such, she prefers to use exact names and titles whenever she talks, as it makes her sound smarter and more professional than she really is, which makes her a great foil to both Poseidon and Hermes, the former known for being crude and very blunt, and the latter who is known for being clever and very tricky.

Nu47781: Thanks mate, I love Blood of Zeus as well, when I first saw all the designs for the various Greek Gods in BOZ, I couldn't help but think just how well they would all fit into a DC Animated Universe movie or tv series, while I'll admit the show itself is not flawless, its character designs are nothing short of amazing and if I'm being completely honest with you, without those divine designs to inspire me, it's quite possible that this story might never have been written, I am so excited to hear that season 2 is finally on its way after all of these years and I hope you are as well mate, I can't wait to see more designs for other Greek Gods as well as what actors they will get to voice them.

Guest: First off mate, thank you for your respect in choosing not to criticise my writing in regard to Hippolyta's character arc, I really do appreciate you politely voicing your frustrations instead of having a go at me like others would, hopefully though, I've addressed some of your issues with her character in both this chapter and my earlier announcement regarding my recently updated older chapters.

Guest: I appreciate your support mate, I really do, especially as of late in what has been a very difficult and trying time for me, I'm glad the suspense is killing you (not literally of course) as I do pride myself on being suspenseful writer, but I am going to make one thing hopefully very clear to you right now mate. You shouldn't expect Kal to fully discover his Kryptonian heritage until he is old enough to properly handle it, not only would it not serve the plot at all at this point, but it would also completely derail the story I am trying to tell.

I remind you, Kal is still just a boy at this point in the story, smart, and mature for his age, yes, but still a boy, the reveal will happen when he is older, like early twenties older and not a moment before, no amount of asking is going to change that, I have a plan in place here and I am sticking to it, there are still plenty of other interesting story elements to keep you entertained in the meantime though.

Ghost Angel14: Thanks for the support, mate, I really appreciate.

Azathot: Yeah, if Alkyone was living in Man's World, she would definitely be on the FBI's watch list, like I've said before, the woman is not right in the head, she is a villian who is meant to be hated not sympathised with, but don't worry, in the immortal words of Jafar from Aladdin. "She'll get what's coming to her."

Azathot: I'm not entirely sure why you asked this question twice before I could have a chance to answer it here in the newest chapter, but the answer to your question mate is both yes and no. No in the sense that this is not a harem story with the main male character having like twelve different partners, but yes, it is technically a harem story in the sense that there are characters who actively engage in polygamy and other forms of open relationships, Apollo and his Muses being the most obvious example.

Shark32232: You're not pushy at all mate, I can't always say when the next chapter will be coming out, but I can always say that one is coming, though more supportive reviews definitely do help motivate the creative process.

Mosh1215: Thanks mate, I hope this chapter was worth the wait.

: Thanks mate and for the record, I completely agree with your points, also no need to worry, this story is definitely continuing, though as I've stated in previous chapters, Kal and Dian's relationship in this story is strictly that of younger brother and older sister, as for Lois, she may or may not be appearing in this story at all, and even if she does, it probably won't be as Kal's main love interest, that role in this story is Zatanna's, as I feel like she is a unique choice as Kal's romantic partner who brings a lot more to the table and fits into the more overall mythical theme of the narrative.

Just to be clear, I actually am a big fan of both Superman and Wonder Woman pairing stories and Clark and Lois pairings stories as well, but I decided from the very beginning that for my own story, I wanted to go with a different pairing, one that I think deserves more attention and that surprisingly works based on the few stories about this pairing that I've managed to find and read.

My List of References featured in this Chapter.

1. Persephone son's Zagreus tragic death as well as her nickname for him Little Sprout are both references to Zagreus backstory and one of his many nicknames from Hades.

2. Persephone telling Hippolyta that Kal is not Hercules or Thrax, that he is her son and right now, he needs his mother is a reference to Freya telling Kratos that Atreus is not his past, he is his son and right now he needs his father from God of War 2018.
