Sitting on the floor of her cell, with her back leaning against the wall, Bella can't help but wonder why it was Josh the one who declared war on her father instead of Henry, considering she was taken while in his Kingdom.
Maybe Henry does have some sort of alliance with her father and doesn't want to risk it. She kicks herself for not thinking about asking him when she could and for not remembering if he had mentioned it.
However, if that's not the case, she needs to keep his alliance with Josh a secret, just in case they are planning something. And knowing Josh and a little of Henry, they definitely will have something planned.
Bella lets out a deep breath, thinking that whatever those two have planned, they might want to hurry the hell up, since she doesn't know how long her father will wait before he executes her.
The door to the dungeon opens, pulling Bella's focus back to the present, and a young boy walks in, dismissing the guard and standing in front of her cell, just looking at her.
Bella takes a good look at her brother, the resemblance with her father uncanny, and waits for him to say something. If he's there, it means he might want something from her. What, she has no idea.
They stay like that for a few minutes, until Bella breaks the silence, her eyes never leaving his.
-"Are you gonna say something or just keep staring at me?" - She sees him look away for a moment before looking back at her.
-"Is it true you betrayed our father for a man?"
-"What do you think?"
-"I want to hear it from you."
-"What's your name, little brother?"
-"Ethan."
-"Well, Ethan, I did betray our father, but it was never because of a man."
-"Why then?"
-"Has father ever told you about Kimberly, our older sister?"
-"No." - The boy looks at her confused.
-"Of course he didn't." - Bella scoffs. -"Do you want to know what really happened?"
-"Yes." - Ethan sees her take a deep breath before speaking again.
-"Years ago, our father proposed an alliance to Josh and to seal it, he tried to have Josh marry our sister Kimberly. Now, Kimberly had become obsessed over Josh and our father would always give Kimberly what she wanted, so if she wanted Josh, our father was going to get her what she wanted."
"But Josh refused the agreement, telling father that he wasn't about to marry someone he barely knew or didn't even loved just for the sake of an alliance. He offered alternatives to our father to seal the alliance, but father refused them all. Eventually Josh returned to his Kingdom, ending the possible alliance, and leaving a heartbroken Kimberly behind."
"That refusal led to Kimberly falling into a depressed state and it didn't take long after that for her to fall seriously ill and die. Our father, of course, blamed Josh for it, saying that if Josh had just married Kimberly, she would still be alive."
"Not long after Kimberly's death, our father sent me to Josh's Kingdom under the guise of gathering information for a new alliance that didn't depend on a marriage agreement to be sealed."
"But I quickly realized that what our father wanted was information on how to best hurt Josh and his Kingdom. I decided that I wasn't going to let father wage a war based off of his grief. So I sent as much harmless information as I could, trying to stop a full on war from starting."
"That is the real reason I betrayed our father, it didn't have anything to do with a man and everything to do with not wanting the blood of innocent people on my hands."
-"Then why does father say it was because of a man?"
-"Because at one point in this whole thing, I asked Josh's Commander and brother for help. While he was helping me, and after spending so much time together, we ended up falling in love and marrying in secret."
"When our father captured Jensen, that was his name, I went to him and asked him to free Jensen and that he was my husband. That was when father branded me a traitor."
"That's the truth, Ethan. I have no reason to lie to you. You're my brother and I'm dead either way, so… Look, at the end of the day, I did betray our father, the only difference is the real reason behind that betrayal."
Bella sees the boy looking at the ground, seemingly taking in all she just told him. She probably shouldn't have dumped all that information on the poor boy, given his age, but if it will help him understand the truth, then she doesn't regret it.
She watches as Ethan must've come to some decision, because he looks up at her and nods, before starting to walk away. However, a few feet away from her cell, he stops and turns to her again.
-"Did you ever wondered about me?"
-"I never knew I had a little brother, but if I had known, I would've found a way to reach out to you."
Bella smiles softly at him as he leaves the dungeon, the door closing behind the guard that returns to his post outside her cell. She leans her head against the wall behind her, thinking that that poor boy has no idea the family he was born into.
Bella only hopes that telling him the truth hasn't been a mistake.
