It wasn't easy, being in another world hailed as the heroes that were meant to save it and served hand and foot by a small army of servants, courtesy of the kingdom's wealth and deep coffers. And sure, it didn't sound like that when she put it like this, but there were a lot of complexities to the situation, Elena Winters would assure you.

Sure, then she'd ram a knife in your throat because she wasn't about to let any witnesses live, but it was the thought that counted.

For starters, though they were kept in relative luxury, this luxury was just that- relative. They did have some acceptable magical toilets around here and the food was acceptable, if you were into endless meat, but she really missed the internet, to name but one example.

Similarly, for all that the castle was somewhat open to them with its gardens and study areas and shit, none of the 'summoned heroes' were allowed to set a foot into pretty large chunks of it… Or outside the place, of course. Sure, they didn't say it like it was, and used soft terms for widdle babies instead of telling anyone asking about it to shut up, but Elena understood things for what they were.

The kingdom- or its highest ruling class consisting of the king and his ministers, she supposed- didn't want to risk losing control of them. Seeing as they were supposed to be these super powerful mega-heroes, it only made sense- it'd be pure stupid to bring them into this world only to have the class scatter randomly to do whatever or, worse, end up working for whatever other nations had an interest in a pocket superpower of their own.

No, as far as the kingdom was concerned, getting them up to par to the point they could defeat the demon king or whatever and out of everyone's hair was for the best. If Elena thought the place and all its institutions were acting in unison, that was.

Her dad put it best when he said that if there's five people in a room, you'll have ten different opinions and one corpse unless you keep them busy somehow.

Case in point, she was pretty sure the church had its own designs for them… And, well, she just so happened to be well-equipped to deal with those kinds of things. Thinking hard for a moment, she summoned her personal status window, the brief summary version of it about as reductionist as one could get.

Name: Elena Winters

Class Assassin

Subclass Psychopath

Being able to expand the different fields on demand, it was pretty handy to have this particular setup as her 'default' one, preferences for which could be set pretty much on demand. Interestingly, basic 'Analyze' effects only showed some parts of the target's status, and which ones it did show could be affected by the 'options' one set up beforehand.

That wasn't something they'd been told, of course; Elena just went out of her way to steal a 'Lens of Analysis' from the castle and experiment with it. It was one more example of how something was fundamentally funky here, and not in the good way.

Personally, Elena found that her class and subclass were both really, really good, honestly the best among the class hands down and none of those losers could prove otherwise. Being an Assassin gave her the cover of the 'Rogue' skills she used during training and that nobody questioned, from the evasive maneuvering skills she could make use of to instantly get out of dodge on a dime now to what she imagined generic rogues would be capable of in general.

'Evasion', 'Stealth', 'Disguise', 'Acrobatics' and 'Parkour' were all par for the course, and nobody thought twice about them when she pulled them out. Then there was 'Backstab', which actually was a specialized skill that let her instantaneously teleport short distances to attack enemies from behind, which according to the accomplished tutors and trainers she had to deal with was an exemplary example of how a hero such as herself stood far and beyond the average person, with or without the same class.

Then of course she had 'Toxin Handling', which let her safely produce and apply her own poisons and stuff out of available materials, 'Anatomy', which let her instinctively know where to stick the sharp sticks to cause maximum damage, 'Manhunter', granting her additional damage against humanoid targets and of course 'Assassination', which let her use any and all small or light handheld weaponry with a given level of proficiency and gave her plenty of insight into how to use all her other skills to get herself into the right position to kill someone or something, then get out of said position after the job was done.

Considering the two 'Knights' of the class got 'Heavy Armor', 'Shield' and 'Sword', Elena's array of abilities was pretty broken, to say the least, and that before her subclass weighed in… 'Homicide', 'Ignore Pain' and 'Mental Resistance' brought up the rear and let her work in just about any condition, not to mention the added damage against other humans and psychological damage she could inflict if she wanted.

That was literally what the skill description said, and she was inclined to agree. People often didn't think straight when they were stabbed in the face, after all.

But never mind her difficulties in sourcing a proper garrote she could use despite being somewhat short and such, Elena was currently going down her list of suspicious people and organizations she'd need to deal with to ensure this whole thing went off without a hitch, a list that was lengthening the longer she spent in this world.

Because as it turned out, people were idiots and practically begged to have their ill-advised schemes found out. Hence why she was currently impersonating a nun in order to infiltrate the church built into the royal castle to 'demonstrate the closeness of the royal family to the Goddess' or something.

All she cared about was that she was now dragging the third priest dude into the same cupboard already, slowly making her way through everyone that tried to molest the nuns on a casual basis. Really, she was doing this place a favor!

Around two dozen deaths later, Elena had managed to clear things up, cross out the plan to mind-control the heroes and summarily stab the shit out of the Bishop behind it all, followed by obscuring her interference by setting the entire room on fire with all the fine booze she'd pilfered from the church itself and escaping out a window unseen.

All in a day's work, and she'd even leveled up a couple times… As it turned out, you got more 'EXP' by acting in accordance with your class, so it was pretty lucrative to go around murdering people for her, in more ways than one.

Speaking of, she still hadn't figured out who owed her money for removing that whole church plot, so for the moment she'd gone with what her instincts as both a modern person and a video gamer told her and looted her own pay out of the slightly singed church, hiding the works of art she could smuggle on her person in a convenient location right inside the castle.

Hiding her extracurricular activities was going to be a pain in the ass, but then, being one of the 'heroes' they couldn't bother with too obvious surveillance, so Elena made do. And lo and behold, the day after she was done with the first phase of her 'Keep These idiots Alive Long Enough To Be Useful' Plan concluded…

"Bishop Karlschneid has been assassinated by demon cultists. This vile act of murder shall not go unanswered!"

It was totally worth it to keep the powdered remains of that demon thingy she'd stabbed to death the week prior and spread them around before the set the fire. Magical investigative techniques just picked up 'demonic taint' and voila!

Now about the most troublesome of her classmates… Especially the boys. The boys would die first, she decided.
