"It's locked."
Jamie put a hand on Eddie's shoulder and began to pull her away from the door.
"Babe, all the pulling on that door won't make it open."
Taking a breath in and letting it out slowly, Eddie put a hand on her belly.
"I don't want to give birth to our baby here. In this place. I want to be in a hospital surrounded by doctors and nurses and good drugs to keep the pain at bay. What do they have to offer here? Other than being prisoner?"
Eddie could see Jamie was working on a plan, but she didn't know how they were going to pull it off. As he was about to speak he turned his attention to the bedroom door. His defenses going up, he placed himself in front of Eddie. They fell slightly as Doctor Matthews entered the room, closing the door behind her so she could speak.
"Come with me. I need your help with a delivery."
Jamie suddenly felt like a deer in the headlights. He quickly recovered and nodded, although he was doing his best to sound confident.
"Ok. What room?"
Doctor Matthews quickly dug in a dresser drawer that had a lot of medical supplies in them. Thrusting a stethoscope into his hands, she went over to the wardrobe closet and all but yanked a starch white lab coat from a hanger and threw it at him.
"Here, put that coat on and drape the stethoscope around your neck. No one is going to tell the difference. You've got this. Just follow my lead."
Jamie quickly put the coat on and draped the stethoscope around his neck and gave Eddie a side glance. She smirked and looked him up and down.
"If we weren't in such a dire situation bub, I'd say you look very sexy in that white lab coat."
Doctor Matthews knocked on the door and it opened, revealing four guards behind it. One ushered Doctor Matthews out the door and the other grabbed Jamie by the arm.
"Come on doc. They need your help. Sounds pretty serious in there."
Jamie followed behind Doctor Matthew's and kept his eyes straight ahead. He was trying to be as discreet as possible in getting information about the surroundings around him. A few doors down and around the corner, they both entered the room of a woman screaming and in obvious pain.
"Please! Get her out! Please!"
Taking a deep cleansing breath, Jamie nodded and his gaze softened.
"Just keep breathing. Take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. That's it…"
Looking to Doctor Matthews/Officer Lancaster, she nodded at him from the bathroom where she was currently washing her hands.
"Sienna."
Jamie took in this new information and gave Sienna a comforting smile.
"Just keep breathing Sienna. I'm Doctor Stevenson. Doctor Matthews and I will help you deliver this baby. Safely. Doctor Matthew's will be here in a minute. I'll be right back, ok? Just relax and keep breathing."
Officer Lancaster/Doctor Matthew's came back into the room and sat down on the rolling stool at the foot of the bed. She motioned with her head towards the bathroom.
"Ok Sienna, let's put your feet up here. There we go. Doctor Stevenson will be back. He just went to get cleaned up. Keep breathing."
Jamie took another nervous breath in as he entered the bathroom and turned the tap on. Washing his hands, he made sure to scrub all the way up to his elbows. A nurse he hadn't seen previously appeared next to him to turn off the tap. She helped dry his hands and arms with a clean towel. Both exiting the bathroom, Jamie went back towards Doctor Matthews and Sienna. The same nurse helped him put a clean mask and gloves on. She then pushed another rolling stool towards him with her foot and Jamie sat down on it. Reigning in his confidence, he looked to Doctor Matthew's and followed where her index finger was pointing. He added his thoughts.
"We'll have to rotate the baby. Her shoulder is stuck."
Doctor Matthew's gave Jamie pointers without saying a word and he followed her lead. She spoke up trying to sound reassuring.
"Ok, let's rotate a little more to the right. That's it. How are you doing Sienna?"
Jamie took a brief moment to look up over the sheet the see the very red and sweat covered face of Sienna.
"Is she out?"
Jamie shook his head and then concentrated on what he was doing.
"Not yet Sienna. You're almost there."
It wasn't long before Jamie and Doctor Matthew's finally got the little girl free from her mother. The nurse handed Doctor Matthew's a towel and she quickly wrapped her up after she cut the umbilical cord separating both mother and child. Handing the squalling little girl to Jamie, he felt a great sense of pride and joy fill him. Carefully getting up from the rolling stool, he went over to a counter where a scale was at and a heated bassinet. This room was different than the other one he and Eddie were in. This one was set up more like a birth suite in a hospital. Someone must be bringing in supplies or smuggling them in. He would have to figure out a way to check on that later. For now, he had to focus his attention on the little girl who was now giving out unhappy squeals. Just as he was about to set the little girl on the scale, he heard Doctor Matthews speak.
"What's her Apgar doctor?"
Jamie had to dig to remember what the numbers meant. For a moment he mentally went over in his mind how this baby looked, her coloring, her breathing and crying. Her movement. Taking another breath, he let it out and gave her his answer.
"She's an 8. She's got good movement. Good strong cry. Good lungs."
He then turned his attention back to the baby girl who was working on getting out of the towel wrapped around her. He gently and carefully placed her onto the scale and read the weight to Doctor Matthew's.
"8 pounds and 6 ounces."
Officer Lancaster/Doctor Matthews nodded her head in agreement.
"Good healthy size for a girl. You did good mama. Have a rest."
Everything seemed to whiz by after that and Doctor Matthew's and Jamie were headed back to his and Eddie's room. As they entered and she shut the door, she smiled at Jamie.
"You did well in there. You would've made a great Obstetrician."
Jamie shrugged his shoulders and shook his head.
"Nah. Pediatrician sounds better."
Eddie looked at the both of them from the bed. She'd been in a light slumber until they entered.
"So? How'd it go?"
Officer Lancaster/Doctor Matthew's smiled at Eddie.
"Your husband here passed with flying colors. Now its time to check on you. Let's see how your baby is doing mama."
Eddie still had that sinking feeling, but Jamie still had a plan to get them out of there. Hopefully before their baby was born.
To Be Continued…
A/N: So, what'd you guys think? This fic is kind of a process for me. I can see the story in my head and the layout of this house I'm focusing on right now but putting it into words is kind of difficult sometimes.
