It is late in the evening, Grisha walks up to the Lenz's front door wearing a hat, tinted glasses, and a mask to cover the lower half of his face. He knocks at the door. There is no response so he knocks again.
"I'm comin! I'm comin!" Grisha hears on the other end. Then an old man, Historia's grandfather, opens the door with an irritated look. Though after seeing Grisha he immediately grabs his gun from off to the side, thinking the masked man might be a burglar. "What?"
"Hello, my name is Kruger, and I want your granddaughter."
Knowing Historia's homelife, Grisha was half hoping that the grandparents would just comply to his wish (after giving them a fake name and concealing his identity for if Rod comes bye unexpectedly). Though the old man is more confused than concerned.
"What?"
"I know who her father is," Grisha says, causing the old man's hand to tense while holding his gun. "Give her to me and you won't have to worry about her anymore."
The old man smiles. "She will be right with you."
Just as Grisha theorized. With Alma gone, he and his wife just needed an excuse to get rid of the girl. He can hear the old man and an old woman laughing from behind the door. Then he yells for Historia.
"Historia! Grab your shit! You're leaving! Some guy actually wants you!"
Historia is in her room. She is on her bed, reading her favorite book about Krista and the demon and feeling whole in a way she can't describe. Then she hears her grandfather calling to her from downstairs.
"Historia! Grab your shit! You're leaving! Some guy actually wants you!"
Historia is confused, and alarmed. 'A stranger is here for me?' she thinks. 'But who? Unless, wait…could it be? Dr. Jaeger is finally here?' Historia becomes so happy and excited. Has the day finally come where she can have a real family like he promised?
"What is his name?" Historia yells back.
"Doesn't matter! Down! Now!"
"You're going to be someone else's problem now!" her grandmother adds.
"I'll be down there in a few minutes!"
Historia quickly runs into her closet and grabs a bag. She throws in as many clothes, books, and toys as she has (which isn't much). The she runs to the bathroom in the hallway to grab her toothbrush before running down the stairs. She sees her grandmother and grandfather smiling but staring hard at her. Historia sees the masked man in the doorway and she is initially warry, until he removes his mask and glasses (while making sure her grandparents aren't watching). It is Grisha Jaeger. He mouths for her not to say his name. Historia gasps, cries and runs into Grisha's kneels down, hugs her, and picks her up.
"Hello Historia," Grisha says. "I just spoke to your grandparents and they agreed that you are going to be living with me from now on."
"Really?" Historia asks, so happy that tears go down her face.
"Come, I'm taking you to your new home now," Grisha says. "You're going to have a new mother. A brother and a sister."
Historia trembles.
"A-A new mother?" Historia wraps her arms around Grisha tighter as the grandparents wait impatiently. "Thank you. I love you."
Grisha's face tenses as he gets a flashback to his son Zeke. How Grisha treated him up until the day he turned on him. And even now he is ultimately just using another royal child. A single tear rolls down his cheek but he wipes it away.
"Aw, how sweet. Now get out of here before someone sees you," grandma Lenz says.
Grisha gives the woman a cold glare and speaks to Historia. "Let's get out of here."
Grisha steps outside the house with Historia in his arms. Historia looks at her grandparents one last time.
"Bye grandma, by grandpa. I wish things could have been different between us."
The elder Lenz's just slam the door in her face. Historia is saddened and Grisha just holds onto her. He walks to his car and sets Historia in the back seat. He starts his car and gets in the drivers seat. As Grisha starts his trip back to Wall Maria, he looks at the sad little girls face through his rearview mirror. Grisha takes a deep breath in and prepares his conditioning for her
"I'm so sorry Historia," Grisha says.
"I'm used to it," Historia says, sadly.
"I happened to do some research on your background and I have learned some things about your family history that your grandparents and mother have kept secret from you."
"Like what?" Historia asks. "Wait, are you my dad!?" she asks excitedly.
"No, but I know who he is."
Grisha and Histira were almost at the entrance to Wall Rose when Grisha had finished telling Historia almost everything. He told her that her mother Alma worked as a maid in the Reiss estate and got pregnant with her from an affair with Lord Reiss. He tells her that the council considered the affair and her birth a disgrace to the Reiss name, hence why they were sent to her grandparents and why her mother was so cold to her.
"So that's why no one likes me," Historia says. "Because my dad had me by cheating with my mom?"
"Yes, I'm sorry," Grisha says. "You didn't deserve that."
"But aren't you worried I will get you in trouble too?" Historia asks.
"Everything will be fine, Historia," Grisha tells her. "No one but me knows your true identity. Not even my family. Let's keep this between us and everything will be fine."
Historia nods. "...Ok."
"Though, that reminds me," Grisha says. "It might be best if you change your name. How about from now on you go by…Faye Jaeger?"
"Faye…" Historia repeats. "Um, how about Krista instead?"
"Krista?"
"I dunno, I just feel better about that name."
Grisha pauses for a while, then he shrugs.
"Ok, Krista Jaeger then."
Grisha smiles at her through the rear view mirror. But when he looks forward again he sees that there is a massive line of blocked cars leading to Wall Rose. He promptly steps on the brakes which nearly causes him and Hisotria to jolt forward in their seats. A Military Police soldier stands bye and Grisha addresses him.
"Excuse me, officer," Grisha says. "Can you tell me what's going on?"
"Titans have just breached Wall Maria," the MP says.
Grisha freezes with fear and his eyebrows shot up.
"WHAT!?"
"A Titan just showed up outside of Shiganshina," the MP says. "According to the witnesses it was really big. Bigger than the wall. I'm not sure if I believe that but it knocked down the gate and dozens of Titans came flooding in. Then another one that appeared to be wearing a bronze armor broke down the gate leading into Wall Maria. Everyone is flooding into Wall Rose. Well, the ones that they could fit on the life boat and didnt get eaten at least."
Grisha's face becomes stricken in pure terror. His heart races and his hands clutch his steering wheel hard.
'The warriors arrived!? TODAY!? No! This can't be happening!' Grisha thinks. 'Wait! MY FAMILY!'
"Dr. Jaeger?" Historia/Krista asks, worried. "What is happening?"
Grisha's mind races, but then he remembers the one person who can fix this. It goes against his original plan, but with the Wall broken down anyway there might not be a point.
"Hold on a second, Krista," Grisha says, turning around. "I need to talk to someone about this."
Grisha drives all the way back to the center of Wall Sina and into the forest surrounding the Reiss estate. He leaves Historia in the car and she takes a nap and he walks the rest of the way to the Reiss chapel. He had been there many times before in secret to steal spinal fluid and alter it in his basement. He currently has one that he altered (Serum 2-the enhanced memory enhancer) mixed with Warhammer Spinal fluid in is jacket pocket that he intended to use when he was done here. But now, he knows that when he goes down into this chapel there will be people there. There will be Rod Reiss, the true ruler of the walls and the Founder, along with his family of pseudo-shifters. Grisha takes a deep breath as he opens the door.
'I might as well throw my whole plan away now,' Grisha thinks. 'But I already lost one family. I can't lose another. Besides, I need Eren to inherit the Attack Titan from me.'
Grisha pulls his mask back over his face and walks down the stairs and at the very bottom of the crystal cavern. It is a magnificent place of crystal columns as big as the Colossal Titan. This time, he sees the Reiss Family there. They are wearing white robes and praying to Ymir for safety. Rod Reiss hears the footsteps and alerts his family. They turn around to see Grisha approaching them.
"Who are you and how did you find this place?" Rod Reiss asks.
His eyes glow as he tries to use his powers on Grisha. But, being a fellow shifter, he is mostly immune to the Founders power. Rod is confused why he can't look into the stranger's mind. He wonders if this man is an Ackerman, but he then detects a spark of Titan power inside him. One of the nine.
"You, your-"
"Please listen!" says Grisha. "I'm an Eldian who came from beyond the Walls! I'm a subject of Ymir, just like all of you!"
The Reiss family is surprised by this. He is definitely from the outside world if he knows the words Eldian and Ymir. They listen as Grisha continues his plea to Rod.
"Please, King of the Walls! Kill the Titans that are attacking Wall Maria! Before my wife and children and thousands of others are eaten alive!"
Frieda turns to her father, who is just looking at Grisha blankly. She sighs and faces Grisha.
"I'm so sorry, sir," Frieda says, to Grisha's shock. "I've been trying to convince my father to do that for an hour. Or at least make the Titans leave. He just won't."
"I will not reveal the Power of the Titans until I can activate the Rumbling," Rod says, to Grisha's shock. "The Reiss family has stayed in power since the fall of Eldia thanks to my great uncle, Konrad Fritz, wiping their memory of his fathers foolish mistake. We have been in hiding since then, until the day the world give us the justification to attack first (and no thanks to my brother). After which, I will undo Karl the Foolish's mistakes and reconquer that which remains untrampled."
"AND I SUPPORT THAT!" Grisha yells. "AND I KNOW ABOUT THE VOW! But Marley has attacked now! Isn't it time!? Why allow more of your people to get eaten!?"
"I allowed the Warriors to reach the Walls specifically for that," Rod says. "Unfortunately, it seems my brother's Vow is still in effect. I cannot control the Colossi any more than I could before. I assume that it is because we were attacked by fellow Eldians."
"Then evacuate the Titans from the Walls now!" Grisha yells. "If you have nothing to gain from allowing more people to be eaten! Isn't a king supposed to protect his people!?"
"So I'm losing a few subjects out of a million," Rod says apathetically. "Not that big of a loss."
Grisha grits his teeth. He is even more angered by the fact that none of his relatives, bar Frieda, seem concerned.
"Father, the Titans can't protect us within the Walls," Frieda pleads.
"It is only a matter of time before Marley strikes again," says Rod. "This time with humans. Once that happens I will be the god who rebuilt Eldia from the ground up. In the meantime, we will keep an eye out for the shifters."
"And what do you plan to do regarding the Eldians on the mainland?" Grisha asks.
"They are not true Eldians. Traitorous scum. But not you. I sense you have a Titan inside you. I can remove it safely. Surrender your Titan to me and you will be given a place in the royal court. You will be a lord with a new wife and riches beyond your imagination in the New Eldian empire."
Grisha glares at the man.
"Even if I believed ANY of that, my answer would still be "no"." Grisha takes out a scalpel. "And if you won't protect your own people and save Eldia the right way, then I will just have to do it for you."
"Even if you could take this power from me, you would not be able to use it," Rod says.
Grisha represses the need to smirk. Rod doesn't know that he knows how a non-shifter can use the Founder. Or that he has his bastard child sleeping in the back of his car ready to be uncapped. It seems that his plan is going to be put into effect after all.
"I know I would not be able to make use of the Founder's power," Grisha lies convincingly, making the Reiss' confused. "Each of the Nine Titans is unique. Distinguish by a certain trait. Like the Attack Titan whose power was passed to me. For ages, we who inherited the Attack Titan have bucked the authority of any that sought to control us... And I finally come to understand why... We're meant to oppose the self-righteousness of the king! Yes, this is the moment our memories have been leading us towards for generations!"
"And I suppose you have seen a future where you stand victorious?" Rod asks.
"No, even with the Attack Titans ability to look into future memories, what we see is still limited," Grisga says. "I have not been able to see past the fall of Maria. I could not even tell when that would be. But the future is already long since decided. I'm going to eat the Founding Titan. And put an end to the royal bloodline! Right now!"
As Grisha prepares to stab his own hand, Rod turns to Frieda. "Frieda, fight him!"
"What!?"
"You know my Titan form is too big!" Rod shouts as the rest of their family runs away. "If I transform here I will crush our family like I did Uri during my ascension! I will support you however I can! Do it now before that man kills us all!"
Grisha stabs his hand and he transforms in a storm of lightning into his Titan form. He roars as his massive body forms. He has a beard, pointy ears and a hairy chest. The rest of the Reiss' hide behind pillars as Frieda reluctantly transforms. She wont let that happen. She bites her hand and her whole body, bar her brain and spine, expands into its enlarged Titan form.
As Titan-Grisha reaches for Rod, the king's eyes glow and he waves his hand. A large spike of hardened Titan skin shoots up and stabs Grisha in the chest. It pierces the Attack Titan all the way through. As Grisha struggles, Frieda takes the opportunity to punch Grisha in the face and knock him away (breaking the crystal in the process).
Frieda doesn't want to do this. Though the rest of her family is cheering for Frieda to kill him to protect their "paradise", she only listens to her mother's pleas to save them. The Attack Titan isn't just going to eat her father, he's going to kill her and her whole family as well. And thanks to enhancements to her Titan form by her father, Frieda's Titan is stronger than average. She rushes forward to beat Grisha into submission. But Grisha dodges her punch and holds her off.
As they fight, Grisha receives another vision. He sees his wife, Carla, trapped under the rubble of their house as Eren and Mikasa struggle to lift it off of her.
'Carla…'
Grisha can feel his anger burning inside of him. His wife is/was trapped and in Titan-infested territory. Eren and Mikasa refusing to leave her! There is a good change that they can be dead now! And it is the Reiss' fault for not doing something sooner!
In a burst of fury, Grisha throws Frieda off of him and she falls to the found. Grisha pounces on top of her and punches her in the face. Rod tries to help by summoning another pillar of Titan Crystal, but Grisha had already taken a sample of serum that he stole labeled "Armor" ahead of time. His forearm hardens to develop a crystal shell cover and he punches the pillar, shattering it. A piece of debris nearly hits Rod and the king jumps out of the way. Rod falls to the ground and he looks up in shock as Grisha continues punching Frieda in blind rage, until he finally bites her neck and eats her.
Rod shivers at the sign of his oldest child being eaten as Grisha faces him and his family in blind fury. The rest of the Reiss' run and Grisha mindlessly attacks them as they flee. Rod watches in horror as Grisha crushes his wife and youngest son under his foot. How he crushes his older son in his hand. How he crushes his other children under his palm. And Rod is too scared by the sight to do anything about it.
After Grisha has killed the rest of the Reisses he turns his attention to Rod. Forgetting his powers for the time being, Rod chooses to run.
'Coward!' Grisha thinks before chasing after him.
Rod runs up the stairs and outside of the church as Grisha's entire Titan body bursts out of it in a blast of flames. Rod continues to run in fear as Grisha reaches for him, ready to devour the king and return to Historia as planned. But it is at that moment, Rod remembers he has a Titan. He bites his hand like Frieda does just as Grisha is about to grab him.
His eyes glow, and a MASSIVE blast of lighting falls down from the sky.
Those watching the burst of energy from the forest from afar would describe it as an astounding but terrifying occurrence. The sky lit up as a loud thundering sound filled the area. An unexpected tempest occurred and blew the trees away for miles. Some thought that it was god enacting retribution for some sin or another. And in a way they were right.
At the center of it all, Grisha's Titan form is blown away several dozen yards by the force of the blast. He looks at the forming Founding Titan and pales at the sight. Rod's Founding Titan was as big as the Colossal, while KNEELING! He wasn't even fully formed but he was radiating so much heat and steam that the patch of forest around them was set ablaze as they were blown away by a constant release of steam. Rod's half-formed Titan, which looked like a bigger form of the Colossal even as patches of skin started covering parts of his body, reaches for Grisha instead glaring with hatred. However, Grisha runs and the half-formed Titan collapses as he does.
Grisha runs as fast as he can until he reaches the very edge of the forest. He exits his Titan and stumbles tiredly to the car where Historia is sleeping inside.
'Thankfully the King didn't seem to have much experience with his transformation. Otherwise I would be dead. I killed them all…the entire Reiss family…even the little kids…and I didnt even get the Founder.'
Grisha coughs violently and blood splatters on his hand. Grisha sighs, knowing that he is running out of time. And he wonders how difficult it would be for the Military Police to look at his records and realize he was likely the man that Rod fought. Grisha looks at the sleeping little girl inside of his car and he sighs.
"I'm sorry, Historia. But I can't be a father to you now. As soon as we reach Wall Rose….I have to disappear." Grisha cries. "I just hope that Carla, Eren, and Mikasa are still alive."
Grisha drove home in a hurry, he grabbed Historia and immediately went searching for Keith. Keith asked who the little blonde girl was in his arms but Grisha told him her name is Faye and she's an orphan before asking where the refugees are. Keith led Grisha and "Krista" to the refugee camp, he was relieved to find Eren, Carla, and Mikasa alive and safe. He gently shook Carla awake.
"Carla. Carla."
"Hmm." Carla stirred awake and opened her blurry eyes to see Grisha's face. She smiles at him. "Grisha, your back."
"Yes, thank the walls you're alright."
The two kiss, and Keith averts his eyes.
"Oh, Keith," Carla says, noticing him.
"Carla."
"It's…been a while."
Yes, they hadn't seen each other since Eren was a baby. When Keith snapped at Carla and basically told her that she wasn't important or special. Carla neglected to tell Grisha about this since they hadn't seen him since the wedding anyways.
"Yes," Keith says, looking regretful. "Carl's listen, I'm so sorry for what I said before."
"What happened?" Grisha asks
"Me and Keith had an argument when Eren was a baby," Carla says. "Keith, it's fine. I haven't thought about that in years."
"No it's not," Keith says. "I called you worthless and ordinary and-"
"What?" Grisha shouts outraged. "How dare you? Leave."
"Grisha, it's fine,"
Keith glances at the sleeping boy and girl.
"Two kids now?"
"Eren has gotten so big," Carla says as she pats Eren's shoulder. "And this is our daughter Mikasa," Carla says, patting Mikasa's sleeping body, then she notices the little blonde girl staring at her from behind Grisha's legs. "Oh, is this-"
"Krista," Grisha says. "Her name is Krista Lenz, but now we will call her Krista Jeager."
"I see," Carla says with a nod. "Krista, come here."
Carla opens her arms and "Krista" reluctantly steps forward. Carla wraps her arms around her and pulls her into a hug. "Krista" stands there shocked, no one had ever hugged her before, and the last time she tried resulted in a bloody nose.
"I'm sorry for what you've been through," Carla tells her. "And I'm sorry I can't give you a real home now but I promise, I'll do my best for you."
"Krista" cried tears of joy and put her arms around the older woman.
"Mommy?"
"Yes, dear. You can call me mommy."
Grisha watches the scene with a smile. Keith averts his eyes and sheds a lone tear. Then Carla moves to wake Eren and Mikasa.
"Eren, Mikasa, meet your new sister."
"No," Grishs says. "They've been through enough. They are tired. We can introduce Krista to them in the morning."
"Ok," Carla says. "I suppose you're right."
"Krista" slips and falls on Carla's leg. She gets up immediately.
"Oh, mommy I'm sorry!"
"No, it's ok sweetheart." Carla lifts the blanket covers, revealing her legs in a cast. "It's just my legs were crushed when the wall broke."
Keith gasps but Grisha looks at his wife's broken legs with a dark expression.
"But you'll be fine, right Carla?" Keith asks.
"I…the doctor said that my legs will heal but there was damage to my spine so they don't think I'll ever be able to walk again. Honestly, I don't even feel them anymore."
"Well, I'm sure that your husband, the best doctor in Shanganshina, will take care of you. Right Grisha? Grisha?"
Grisha didn't respond to Keith and his expression only darkened. He tightened his hand into a fist before taking a deep breath and telling the two of them they need to get their sleep.
Hours Later
"Eren, Eren, wake up."
Eren opens his tired eyes and feels a wave of relief flood over him seeing his father alive.
"Dad?" Eren sits up and he sees a blonde girl his age cuddling next to his mother. "Who is that?"
"Your mother will explain in the morning," Grisha says..
"Dad, moms-"
"I know, Eren. And there are so many people here who are hurt and weren't fortunate enough to escape with their families." Eren and Grisha turned to where an older woman was crying "Moses" in her sleep. "Eren, I can't explain to you how I know this, but those Titans that breached the wall were sent by Marley."
"What?"
"Yes. Now what if I told you there was a way we could avenge your mother and all these people?" Grisha asked. "Make Marley pay?"
"How?" Eren asked excitedly.
"It would have been better if we could get to the basement. But we must work with what we have. Come with me, there's something I need to show you." Grisha then placed his hand on his mother's sleeping shoulder. "I'm sorry, Carla."
Eren left with his father, eager to see what he wanted to show him. To find out how he could avenge his mother and all those people who were hurt. As they approached the forest they ran into Keith Shadis, who Eren recognized as the leader of the Survey Corps. Eren looks confused when Keith asks why his father doesn't just avenge his mother himself and suggests that Eren might be like him. But his father replied that Eren being his son is all he needs and not to follow him as this was a family matter. Eren becomes more confused as they walk for a long time to find a clearing. Eren tries asking his father questions but he remains silent. Eren was scared, his father was cold, serious, yet he seemed to have tears forming in his eyes. Finally, his father gives him the key to the basement.
"Listen to me, it is vital that you keep this key on you at all times," Grisha tells Eren as he looks at the key in his hand. "Whenever you look at it, let this thought flood over you: I must return to that cellar."
Eren looks at his father and watches in confusion and fear as he fills a syringe with some off color liquid.
"I'm going to give you a little something to make you forget for the time being," Grisha says, before he turns around to look at Eren with teary eyes full of regret. "I'm sorry, I wish there was more time to explain. But when the time comes though, you must retake Wall Maria and head for the cellar." Eren steps back, confused and scared as his father approaches him with the syringe. "It won't be pleasant, but in my heart I know what I'm doing is for the best. When the memory confuses you let the memory act as your guide." Grisha moves to inject the frightened little boy and unload his burden onto him, at the cost of both their lives. "It will be a painful journey, but it is yours to make. If you want to save Armin, Mikasa, your mother, and everyone else on this island, you must master this power!"
Eren has no idea what is going on. But the needle and the look of his fathers face causes him to lose the former bravery and willingness to fight he had a minute ago.
"Uh…listen, dad. I changed my mind." Little Eren tries to run but his father grabs his arm.
"Eren! Stay with me boy!" Grisha yells.
Eren can't take it anymore, he is whimpering and beginning as he tries to break free. "Stop please! You're scaring me!" Eren screams as Grisha prepares to inject Eren. "I don't understand what you're trying to do!"
"You don't have to!" Grisha shouts, grabbing his son. "Just give me your arm!"
"No! You're insane!"
"Shut up!" Grisha snaps as he rolls up Eren's sleeve as the boy tries to break away.
"No! Let me go!"
"Damn you this is the only way!" Grisha shouts. "Listen! Don't forget the key! It's the way to the truth! Someday you'll understand!"
Grisha then finally injected Eren with the serum. Grisha stepped back and in a flash of lightning Eren turned into a 3 meter mindless Titan. Titan-Eren moved towards his father to devour him. And despite everything, the primal fear for his life overcame Grisha and he instinctively raised his hands as his son moved to devour him.
It is my theory that Eren gained power similar to the Warhammer Titan after drinking "Armor" serum because he already had the Founder in him (which can make crystal) but that ability was repressed. So Grisha, taking the serum here without the Founder, can develop a shell like that serum is meant too. While Eren's Titan serum being a mix of the altered spinal fluid and Warhammer spinal fluid will have "Interesting" effects. For the significance of Serum 2, reread chapter 5.
I am taking a break from the main island of Devils story to focus on updating this one. I also realize that there might be more chapters than I expected so expect /15 to change.
All comments and kudos are appreciated, thank you.
