MoM's December Monthlies: **Decorate a Tree** *with Ari*

"Compassionate"

"Do you want to join S.P.E.W.? It's the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare!"

"It's only two knuts to join! All funds go towards raising awareness of the conditions the House Elves have to work in, and we aim to bring up legislation to ensure better working conditions and standard of living for the House Elves!"

"Membership gets you a pin and access to our newsletter! You are also welcome to join in meetings where we discuss our plan of action!"

Harry cautiously watched his Ravenclaw girlfriend of two months as she hawked her newest organization on the streets of Hogsmeade to the patrons just trying to buy their things for the holiday season. They passed by her form, their steps quickening the closer they got in order to get away quicker. Those who weren't able to avoid her merely brushed her off or just ignored her. There were very few who tried to bully her, but those got a low powered stinging hex from Harry's wand, and they moved on quickly enough. Hermione was undaunted, however, and continued on, the stack of papers clasped tightly in her arms never diminishing.

Thickly bundled up in a warmly knit hat and scarf–a present from the ever giving Mrs. Weasley–to battle the chill December air, Hermione was advocating for better rights for House Elves, without knowing the specifics of the bonds they had with wizards. Harry had attempted to better inform her on the subject, but his activist teaching abilities were woefully inadequate, and she just brushed his concerns aside. No, what he really needed to do was to introduce her to either the elves in the Hogwarts kitchen or to have her come home with him and talk to his family's elves. The one elf in second year (whom he assumed was owned by the Malfoy family) had been scraggly and beaten up, wearing a ratty old pillowcase instead of a standard uniform like all of his family elves liked to don. With that as Hermione's only source of information on how wizarding families treat House Elves, of course the only action that bleeding heart of hers would logically come to was to white knight for them. She was too compassionate for her own good, and only time would tell if she would hone that talent into something she could make a career out of.
