"You're under arrest, Kira. Again!"
The young assassin looked nonplussed. As if he hadn't expected what happened. As if he didn't know what was happening. How the hell did he find him since he had taken the necessary measures? He had put on make-up so that his face would not be visible, hid any suspicious objects, and the death notes as well! What else did L want? He had no choice but to continue playing his role. It was his only hope after all, now that Misa and Takada were absent.
"You... You must be mistaken! I'm not the one you're looking for!" He claimed.
"Sure you aren't!" The agent mocked him. "I've seen that attitude before!"
"You're mixing me up with Kira! I look like him but I'm not! People can be alike sometimes!"
He uttered the last sentence with a groan of pain as the agent violently pulled the handcuffs, making Light's wrist bleed.
"Any of your protests will be told in court. As for me, am doing my duty as an FBI agent. It seems I was told well you're stubborn. But I didn't expect you to be that much!"
"I'll sue you for misconception! You know the rights of the citizens, don't you? I have the right to be acquitted of innocence!"
"You know, I like the art of acting, but only in TV series or cinema. You're not even talented! Stop talking nonsense!"
Suruga's superiors had told him to shoot the accused one if he became too stubborn. Holding the handcuffs tightly, he pulled out the gun with the other hand and targeted the young man's shin. He let out a scream of pain.
"Believe me please! I'll do anything it needs to catch Kira! Don't shoot me!!"
Just by saying it, he got another shot on the other leg. Holding the second injured leg hot tears rolled down his cheeks. Seeing that Light had no other power, Suruga pulled him to the stairs directly to the entrance. Not many people were circulating that day as it was cold, and it was easier for the agent to arrest him so that he wouldn't have to explain to the neighbours that this man was not innocent. After all, Kira as a public figure had never shown his face. How would they know his guilty just by looking at him?
As soon as he was put in the police vehicle, his eyes were covered with a metal machine, since it was known Kira needed a name and a face to kill. After all, the police already knew all the facts about Kira. That his power was due to the power of a shinigami. A force coming straight from the depths of the underworld. As if Hades had chosen this simple man to become the most ruthless murderer in history. A man that was thought to be the hero...
The agent called the number on the screen. It was one of his superiors.
"Mission accomplished! The runaway accused was arrested!"
"Splendid! Does he show any sign of resistance?"
"He showed before but I shot him. Just like you told me to do, Coil. What's the next step?"
"Take him to the hospital for first aid because he'll die from internal bleeding. We don't want him dead. We want him imprisoned."
"Roger!"
Coil? Isn't that guy L said the other day he's an accomplice of his based in New York? It's not a surprise he's been informed of the situation. Does he act alone? Of course not! He followed L's orders! But again... He talked to Suruga. Well... There's no point in continuing to play my role. The agent has figured it out. But how?! My acting skills are not that bad! Let alone the makeup! Light tried to concentrate his thoughts trying to ignore the throbbing pain in his legs. They are going to take him straight to jail and let him die? How ridiculous! He knew he would be executed for his crimes, but this was a pretty cheap way of execution. Apparently, L was crueller than Kira himself! It's definitely a bluff! Coil called Suruga so that Light can hear his sayings, but something else was hidden behind... L is known for his risk methods. He had to figure it out!
Fuck, it hurts!
He eventually arrived at the hospital and left him to a doctor to take him to the emergency room. He told him he found the young man shot on the road and transported him in his car. Naturally, he did not tell the doctor the patient was Kira. It was not needed after all. He had done his duty as an FBI agent. He went out into the yard away from prying eyes to call the detective.
"The doctor told me the operation will take about two hours. It's a routine operation."
"Glad to hear that!"
"What I should I do now?"
"Nothing at the moment. Wait until the operation is over. As soon as they take him out, keep your mind on the accused person."
"Roger."
Suruga was waiting in the hospital cafe. These three hours seemed endless to him. He kept looking at his watch worrying the time would pass without understanding it. He had to find the doctor and tell him in which room the patient was. He had already shown the face of the good-hearted man who found a fellow man shot on the street. The doctor would not suspect anything. Indeed he wanted to tell the doctor the patient was Kira, but he thought not to upset the hospital staff for his own sake. He brought L's plan to mind.
L had called Suruga to see if he was still involved in the case. Suruga in turn told him he hadn't been instructed by his superiors to make a move, so he acted on his own. The accused person was seen in the pharmacy full of makeup. According to Suruga, only someone who doesn't want to be discovered would do such heavy makeup, so he assumed it was Light and followed him discreetly. L told the agent to pretend so he can distract him. That is, to tell Kira he only came to do a check at home. Then, to arrest him and if he denies his guilt, something quite possible, to shoot him. His strength will be minimal and so he will not be able to escape so easily. Then take him to the hospital to recover. In case he escapes again, which is also possible, locate him with his radar and pursue him. But he shouldn't chase him alone. The entire police force must be mobilized, and inform Deputy Chief Kitamura as well. Though the moment Suruga informed him of the arrest, L spoke to him as Coil and not L to confuse Light. There was no person called Coil anyway. It was another alias of L.

The agent looked at his watch. Six o'clock. The two hours had already passed. He paid for his coffee and went to find the doctor who operated on Light. He told him the patient's condition was relatively good, though the bullet had hit his cane. Which means he will not be able to walk without crutches. Suruga held back his laughter as he imagined Kira limping trying to escape from the police.
A young man in his late teens was sitting on one of the benches in the waiting room. His right foot was in a plaster cast resting it on a stool. An elderly man around his seventies sat next to him with a look of sympathy in his eyes.
"May you have a speedy recovery, boy."
The killer stuttered. "Thank you..."
"How did that happen if I may ask?"
"I was shot."
"That's terrible. I too, met a man the other day who had been shot. His hair was messy as if he didn't wash it for a month. I think this style is called emo, or punk. I'm not sure..."
Light looked at him in question for a moment. It must not be what he was thinking. Many people have L's hairstyle. He wanted to confirm the old man's words.
"Was he sitting on two legs like a frog?"
"Indeed he was! Do you know each other?"
"No, I just asked. I have a cousin who sits in this way."
What's wrong with people today? First the agent and now the old man! Is everyone in agreement or something? Oh, divine trial help me! Get me out of this impasse!
"Excuse me for being rude, but what's your reason for being here?" He changed the topic to distract the old man.
"You're not rude at all. I was the one who asked you first. I'm expecting my grandson to be born in the world. My daughter is in the maternity ward upstairs. You can't imagine how blissful I am..."
"May your grandson live a healthy life!"*
"Thank you for your kind words!"
Sooner or later, Suruga will come out of the infirmary to arrest me. I can't do any other way... I have to find a taxi to take me home. No, this will be a trouble for my mother and my sister when the police locate me. Have they figured out? They mustn't have. Kira's trial hasn't taken place yet. The hotel is also discarded as it is a public space. For now, I'll better go to Takada's place. I'll think about the rest later.
He heard the door of the infirmary creaking. Light didn't notice who came out, but instinctively picked up the crutches and hurried to approach the entrance of the building. The old man looked at him in wonder.
"You're injured! Where are you going in such a hurry?"
An idea flashed through his mind, without knowing the elderly man was a retired police officer, so he was more experienced. "I'm a victim of a frame-up! They think I'm Kira and am being chased by an agent! Believe me! I'm innocent!" Before the old man could answer, Light had already gone out walking awkwardly on crutches. Suruga overheard the assassin talking to the elderly man, though it didn't matter.
"Excuse me, are you the man I was told who chases someone due to accusations that he is Kira?"
"Sorry, but I'm in a great hurry."
"It won't take long. Listen, I'm a retired police officer." He showed him his police ID. It was written Takeshi Sakamoto on it. Although it was old, Suruga was convinced it wasn't fake.
"My experience has taught me that I should never be persuaded by a criminal who says he's a frame-up victim because he is probably saying it as a distraction. In fact, you should have informed the hospital staff! They need to know what kind of person they are dealing with! Just saying as a piece of advice."
"I don't need your advice, grandpa. Speaking of which, you already made me delay his arrest!"
"He's not going to go far in his condition. He'll take a taxi at worst. There is a taxi stop nearby to find him faster."
The agent proceeded to the entrance without saying anything else to Takeshi. Since he was a veteran, however, he followed his instructions. He hoped his assumptions would turn out to be correct. Indeed, when he arrived at the taxi stand, a few seconds before the taxi left, he spotted Light getting in one of them. Light pretended nothing was wrong and told the taxi driver to take him to Takada's neighbourhood as he was in a hurry. Suruga of course, couldn't wait for the next taxi in his case. Should he call L and tell him to send him any police vehicles? That would take a long time too. He searched with his rapid gaze trying to locate a vehicle at his disposal.
He spotted a green bicycle on a pillar. It looked rusty, but it must have quick pedals. He tried its use making sure it was the vehicle he wanted. Eventually, it was. As he rode it, he took the taxi on the hunt. Fortunately, he had noticed the number plates of the car. In fact, he could remember all of them. He'll inform at some point his superiors what car with what number plates should they keep in mind.
Going out on the highway, he spotted the taxi about eight hundred meters away. Behind the bicycle, there were cars trying to overtake him. He knew it was reckless and dangerous! He would be injured by a car in one way or another! But he had to complete his duty as an FBI agent! He remembered Ray Penber, his old friend and classmate. How furious he was about his death... He felt Kira had to die in the most brutal way for that. He couldn't kill him himself though. The best he could do was send him to court. The judge would decide his fate.
He activated his watch to locate the number plate of the car in front of him. It'll be useful if it gets lost among all these cars passing by. A motorbike overtook the bicycle, leaning slightly on it. As if the driver did it on purpose. As if they were an accomplice of Kira. Suruga tried to find a bell to ring, annoyed by the driver's movement but realized the bike didn't have one. Crap! He had to convince the other drivers the reason he was going on the road like that, was a matter of life or death.
Suruga felt something liquid falling on him. He noticed a spot that was a little darker than the colour of his jacket. Soon, the other infinitesimal drops began to appear in front of him. It was the street lights that made them visible. He worried for a moment that the weather would turn to heavy rain. It seemed the taxi was farther than it should be. He couldn't see clearly the number plate. Light must had figured out. He put all his strength on the pedals to move as fast as possible before getting wet. His life was now hanging by a thread, as he was fully exposed to the dangers of the highway. Perhaps his only protection was his alias since he had introduced himself to Kira as Suruga. His hands gripped the handles. So much that his palms made marks.
A car honked at him. It seemed it appeared out of nowhere. Instinctively, he turned the bike on the right side, so as not to be stepped on by the car. The driver opened the window and yelled at him. The agent though, couldn't hear his words due to all these cars and honks. His heart was pounding like crazy.
He turned his gaze once more to the taxi, and before he even realized it, the car lost control and hit the wall of the highway. Three cars located there were hit instantly. The collision was reminiscent of the bumper cars at the amusement park, but with no innocent intentions. The first thought that went through his mind obviously, was that the taxi driver had a heart attack. But why did Kira kill him? He must had noticed something that wouldn't want the driver to see. He approached the collided cars looking for victims.
The rain had intensified and the drops were falling to the debris, mixing it with the blood of an innocent. How could this unfortunate taxi driver know that this passenger would be the last to pick up. He may even had a family waiting for him at home. Just like many other innocents...
It was the first time Suruga felt such pity for a victim of Kira's. But emotions shouldn't catch him at such a time! All he had to do now was find Light and see him wear the coveted bracelets he always needed to wear.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw red and blue lights flashing. He looked over his shoulder and saw six police vehicles with their lights on. Some police officers had come wearing the appropriate equipment, with their faces hidden, that Kira couldn't see them. Four of them had surrounded the taxi patiently waiting for the next move of the runaway accused. An unknown voice was heard: "Police! Surrender, Light Yagami!"
*What Light says to Sakamoto is actually a wish which can't be directly translated from Greek to English. In Greek, we say "να σας ζήσει"/"να το χαίρεστε" which literally translates to "let it live you", but what it actually means is that we wish to parents or the relatives for the baby or the child to have a healthy and happy life.
