Sometime into the night, over in Labor Junction, there was a business deal going down between two established syndicates in the Neo Gotham underground scene. Cybernetics are a hot commodity in Neo Gotham, specifically ones used for infiltration. The two groups met up in one of the abandoned warehouses, there were armored vehicles surrounding the groups, along with the groups themselves awaiting the transaction.
One person from each group approached the table in the center, one of them holding a rugged briefcase, the other sporting an interesting piece of tech in his arm.
"Ya got the creds?" the man with the goods asks.
The other man nodded a couple times. "Got the stuff?"
The man set the briefcase on the table between them and opened it up. "It's one of the latest in WayneTech bio-schems." He says with confidence in his voice. "I had a friend that worked in the lab, they say this is the most advanced in detection."
"Yeah? How so?"
"This thing can not only take over cameras when you're robbin' the place, it can pull files from computers without you needing to access them, and it can halt security alarms for nearly 45 minutes." He explains.
The man with the credits looks over at his boss. "Sounds like an ideal 'schem, Joker." He says. "What'cha think?"
Joker slowly approaches the table, with everyone around them looking at the demeanor on Joker's face. It was very calm, yet mysterious. Joker picked up one of the chips for the schematic and took a closer look at it. "It's WayneTech, you say?" they ask, the man nods. "Do you have a sample of the product?"
"Do I have a sample; I'm almost insulted you asked." The merchant scoffs and taps a button on the briefcase to show a compartment that has the said sample. "By all means, help yourself."
A few moments passed, and a smirk formed on Joker's face. "No… You sample it." They say with a threatening tone. "I wanna know if my money is going to be well spent on this."
The merchant stammered for a few seconds, looking at the two individuals in front of him, then back at his group. "Look, if my shit ain't good enough for you, then that's gonna be a you problem." He starts off. "You waste my time, resources, and money to even get my hands on this stuff." He begins to close the briefcase. "Now you wanna insult me, and my hard work?"
Joker took a deep breath, letting out a sigh. "You BORE me." They say. "So, I'm gonna make things interesting…" they pull a gun out, shooting two shots in the merchant's knees, and followed it up to shots to his shoulders. Before any of the opposing thugs could react, Joker vaulted over the table grabbing the merchant from behind, and placed the barrel of the gun to his temple. "Now, now, boys… Don't promise me a good time." Joker starts to laugh.
The merchant is whimpering in pain from the shots to his shoulders, and knees. "Y-You psycho bitch!" he exclaims. "You're gonna die for this, you know!"
"I'll die for many things, sweetheart." Joker says as they glance at the sample. "But not for this." They continue before wrapping their arm around the merchant's neck, using their free hand to grab the sample and jam it into the merchant's head.
The merchant's eyes started to glow white as he screamed. "What did you do?" he shrieks. Suddenly, his body starts to convulse. Joker pushed him away, he falls to the ground, and an electric field started to form around him.
The opposing thugs clamored at the sight of this.
"The fuck did you do?" one of the thugs asks.
"Psychotic bitch!"
Joker smirked, grabbed the briefcase and tossed it at the body. "Shocking, I know." They point the gun towards the head of the merchant. "But I'm not a fan of being fucked over." Joker says before pulling the trigger, leaving the brain matter of the merchant on the ground.
As the opposing thugs start to make their way towards Joker, an explosion happens from behind that gets their attention. All of their armored cars got destroyed.
"Kill them all." Joker says before walking away from the scene. Behind them, the sounds of bullets being shot, bodies falling, and screams of pain as they leave the warehouse. They approach the car, looking up at the night sky as rain falls down. Joker attempted to let out a sigh, but that sigh turned into a cough into their hand. When they move their hand, they see some blood on the gloves. "What the…"
Harley's slumber was calm in some moments, stressful in others. She had dreams about the panic she had endured throughout the night, with her breakup with Joker, to their henchmen going after her, to Ivy rejecting her, all the way to the lonely feeling she felt until Selina happened to fall near her. Harley would wake up every so often from her sleep with the fear that someone was going to get her in her sleep. Eventually morning hit The Narrows, and Harley's in an out of sleep pattern had gone to a stop completely.
Selina was the first of them to wake up. She sat up in her bed, stretched, and yawned. She took her time getting out of bed, taking her shower, and getting dressed for the day. Once she finished getting ready, she walked out to the main area of the apartment, noticing that Harley was sound asleep. A smile forms on the older woman's face as she goes to set everything up for breakfast.
It took a while, but Selina was able to put together a semi-decent feast for the two of them. If "feast" meant scrambled eggs, bacon, toaster waffles, and a pot of off-brand coffee.
Not far from where Selina was cooking breakfast, Harley's eyes slowly opened. She noticed the scent of syrup, coffee, and bacon. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, and groaned to herself.
Selina saw Harley waking up from where she was at. "Mornin' Kitten." She spoke. "How'd you sleep?" Selina asks while portioning out Harley's plate.
"Like shit, 'Lina." Harley slowly stood up from the couch and walked towards the kitchen. "Why are you up so early?"
The older woman pushed the Harley's plate towards her. "I got a couple errands I need to run, involving that package I stole." She says before taking a sip of her coffee. "I also wanna take you clothes shopping, so you have stuff to change into."
Harley froze when hearing that she was not only going to be alone for a little bit, but also was going to go out in public. "L-Lina, is that.." She looks down, unsure of how to ask her question.
"I know." Selina starts. "If I didn't need to finish this job, I would stay and make sure you're okay." She reaches for Harley, and Harley moves back slightly. Selina lowers her hand. "Harley…"
"Sorry."
Selina shook her head, giving Harley a soft smile. "You never need to apologize for anything, hon." She says. "I promise, I will only be gone an hour, and when I come back you and I can go out together." Selina reaches to grab her coffee cup. "No one will mess with you while I'm around, 'kay?"
Harley's heard similar stuff before from Ivy, and even Joker. After a while, it gets old, and almost routine-based. Yet when Selina said it, something was different. "Ya got a way with words, you know?" Harley asks and looks at her food. "And you're a bit of a chef, you must know how to treat a lady."
A chuckle comes out of Selina before she takes another sip of her coffee. "You're damn right." She says and then goes to her plate to eat.
After breakfast, Selina got ready to head out. She made sure to promise Harley once more that she'd be quick with her outing, and that Harley is welcomed to whatever she needs in the apartment. Harley was a little bit nervous at first, because she's by herself in the apartment, but as far as she knew, she was safe. It didn't take too long for Harley's nervousness to grow as she was pacing the apartment, checking the windows and doors to make sure they're locked. She then checked the kitchen to see if everything was on the up and up.
Harley started organizing everything in the kitchen, making sure things look nice for Selina when she eventually comes back. Even though Harley wanted to show her appreciation, she was also very terrified of those goons of Joker's coming for her.
At some point, Harley had cleaned up the entire kitchen, and maneuvered her way towards the living area. She began sorting out the coffee table, and then moved to the shelves. Harley took each book from off the shelf to clean the shelf itself, and to eventually alphabetize the books.
Time got away from Harley that when she was done with organizing everything, Selina happened to walk through the door to see the apartment looking more organized in comparison.
"I take it you got bored?" Selina asks as she observes Harley cleaning. This alarmed the blonde and made her stand up straight and turn to her. The older woman smirked. "Well, hi."
Harley gulped, shivering slightly due to not knowing if she should have organized Selina's apartment. "H-Hi.." she greets quietly.
Selina raised an eyebrow. "Why so serious, kitten?" she asks before walking over to the kitchen counter. She notices that stuff got moved around. "Say, Harley… Where's the coffee pot?" Selina glances over at Harley.
The quiet tone, and the gaze had sent Harley back to when she was with Joker, at least mentally. She started to breathe heavily and looked around the apartment in hopes of finding a hiding place. "I… I…" Harley's eyes began to shed tears.
"Harley…" Selina called out calmly as she walked from the kitchen towards the blonde.
Harley dropped the cleaning products in her hand, hid her face, and kneeled whimpering. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry…" she says, her body shaking. Harley slightly glances at Selina moving closer, she lets out a scream of fear when Selina gets to her. "P-Please forgive me, 'Lina!" she starts sobbing loudly.
"Fuck…. Joker did a number on her…" Selina thinks, biting the inside of her lip to prevent her from crying at the sight of her friend this broken. "Kitten, listen to me." she says quietly as she sits on her knees beside Harley. "You don't need to apologize for anything, like I said before…" Selina frowns a slight amount. "I had no problems with you organizing the place, in fact, it looks really nice." She whispers.
All Harley could do was heavily breathe in and whimper out.
Selina scooted herself closer to Harley, gently sneaking her hand under Harley's so she could cup the woman's face. "Hey…" she whispers while carefully revealing Harley's face. "Look at me…"
Harley slowly looks at Selina, whimpering some more. "I'm s-s-s…" she sniffles. "… S-s-sorry…"
"Shhh…" Selina places a soft kiss on Harley's forehead, and then pulls her close to an embrace. "It's okay, kitten…" she rubs Harley's shoulder gently. "It's all okay, I promise."
"I j-just…" Harley starts. "I wanted to do something nice for you, in return for you doing something nice for m-me." She breathes in and out. "Please d-don't leave me alone…"
The more she hears Harley like this, the more her heart breaks. Selina didn't realize how much of an impact Joker had on her. "Harley, it's fine, I promise." she says. "...And I'm sorry for making you panic like this." Selina continues. "I appreciate what you've done with the place."
Harley continued to whimper into Selina's arms, unsure of how to feel about everything. She wasn't used to everything being okay, at least physically. "Y-You do…?" she asks quietly.
"Yep-yep." Selina whispers and gently rocks their bodies. "I'm here, hon." She places a kiss on the top of Harley's head. "I promise…"
A/N: So… This one's a short one, I know. I wanna try to advance the story a little more than a day-by-day basis, so the next chapter will more than likely take place after about a month, timeline wise.
