Episode 1: The devil across the street
Sam, Dean and Castiel reached the Louisiana state after 8 hours of drive in their Impala, with in-between breaks for lunch and snacks. The supernatural hunting trio is so much used to moving between states for their hunting cases for 10 years. So they never feel the stress. With the vast amount of resources at their disposal in the men of letters bunker, it kind of made their job easy than before. They have a place now which they own, inherited from Sam and Dean's grand father, Henry Winchester.
Now that they have learned about 6 burnt bodies of what was revealed as demon possessed meat suits, the 3 are on their to meet the mystery white haired man in red suit to confront him after seeing him in the street camera footage.
"Sam, Dean? For once, follow my lead. Dont do anything reckless!" Castiel said in his usual monotone, though the Winchester boys can sense the tense behind his words.
"You sound like you know him a lot! What's the big deal?" Dean asked shrinking his temples.
"I know him for long. *SIGH*. In fact, all of Heaven and Hell fears him" Cas said which raised the meter of suspicion to full.
"Wait, if he is as dangerous as you claim, then why haven't you told us about him?" Sam asked wondering why Cas kept the knowledge of such a dangerous being's existence from them.
"I agree with Sam. First, you didn't tell about your big bro Amenadiel, which replaced Chuck as new God, now this!?" Dean asked frustrated at their angel friend who still kept secrets after having gone through a lot together since he pulled Dean from heaven till fighting Darkness aka Amara.
"I didn't lie or keep any Secrets! That man is not an enemy, but he's not reliable or someone to ask for help either. Besides, death and destruction always follows him. I asked for his help to stop Amara but he-...*SIGH*-...he turned me down!" Castiel said feeling a bit of regret not telling his human friends about this white haired man.
"Fine! Lets talk to him about his murder spree in LA and get this over with" Sam said not wanting to pry too much.
With that said, they drove through New Orleans city. It was late night as there are very few vehicles on the road, so they didn't have much problem with the traffic. Cas directed them through road that goes besides the Mississippi River. Then they took a left inside a street along the way, next to some warehouses. The street was small as it led them straight towards a cross road. From there at the opposite side, they could see a neon board that will glowing in pink color with curly letters that read
"Devil May-...Cry!? *CHUCKLE* Sounds like a name fit for a strip club!" Dean said laughing at the neon sign board thinking this was some bad joke.
"This is where he lives and uhh-...This is not a strip club either" Cas said serious without minding the joke as they turned right and parked the car in the street. Then the three got out of the car as they slowly walked towards the door.
Sam opened it and the three were greeted by the sight of a large desk with a telephone. The fan was spinning slowly as he saw a pool table to left, a gramophone to their right in the corner and a high tech music system next to it. The TV in their left was on, but was full of static. The room was big.
"*WHISTLE*...Damn! Dunno what to expect here!" Dean said looking at the oddly present room.
"WHOA! Look at that!" Sam said pointing his fingers towards the other end of the hall near the ceiling where everyone turned to look at the head of some monsters or seemingly monsters pinned to the wall, like a trophy.
*CLICK*
"You know!? There's something called 'knock knock' before barging in" a voice of a man came in all of sudden. But before anyone could realize, a figure appeared in front with a gun raised and pointed towards them. They could see a man standing 6'2 with long hairs with face hidden by a shadow, though they could see a slight blue glint from his eyes from the light. Sam and Dean immediately lifted their gun, Sam was aiming the pistol and Dean was using a shotgun.
"Now who the hell are you!?" Dean asked, eyes wide open. Though he was acting tough, he was a bit tense as the man appeared before them all of a sudden.
"Sam, Dean! Put down you guns! He's not an enemy, remember? We came here to talk!" Cas said trying to calm everyone down.
"You sure? Its been a while since I shot someone!" The man said with an evil smirk.
"Like how you shot 6 people in Los-Angeles!? We know who you are!" Sam said trying to get leverage on him.
"Huh! Seriously, you came all the way here, just for that!? Disappointing!" the man said.
"Alright, smartass! Now care to explain yourself before I drop you dead!" Dean was slowly exploding in anger, tired of his antics.
"Really! Take you best shot, sonny!" the man said sarcastically.
"Alright that's ENOUGH!" Cas finally had it with the brothers which surprised them both as they let their guard down a bit. Cas then turned to look at the man and called him by his name.
"Dante" he said. The man slowly took a step forward to reveal himself fully out of the shadow. He smirked.
"Long time no see-...Cas!" Dante said.
...
Dante lowered his ebony as he spun it twice with the trigger guard and kept it back at the table near the Ivory.
"So you are the one who killed 6 people in LA" Sam said warily looking at Dante.
"Cas, care to explain how do you know him?" Dean asked with the gun pointing to the ground.
"Well, decades back, your angel friend and co., used to come to me with demon hunting jobs. I take it if I feel like I am in terrible monetary debt to my partner" Dante spoke as he relaxed and took a beer can from the refrigerator.
"You want one?" Dante asked looking at Dean. Dean gazed at him for a moment and then strapped his gun into his jacket as he never says no to beer.
"Sure" he said as Dante threw him a can which Dean caught opened it to take a sip.
Sam walked around and leaned near the table and spoke,
"Wait, Demon hunting!? So you hunt only demons" Sam asked.
"Yep! That's what this 'Devil May Cry' shenanigans is all about. I am a Devil Hunter. Gotta say, finally I've met the Winchester brothers, Cas has been talking about you two a lot before" Dante said drinking his beer.
"You know us?" Sam asked curiously as to how much he knew about them. Dante gave a nod.
"Huh, except your unusually white hair, you don't look any different from us, Cas was too dramatic about you!" Dean said cockily trying to berate him. Dante didn't even react to his quip.
"Dean, Dante is not some human. He is a Cambion, a half celestial being and the most powerful one too" Cas said to which Sam and Dean were stunned as they already what they were and even acquainted with one their kind.
"WHAT!? You mean-...a human-demon hybrid!? Like that kid we once we saw years ago?" Sam asked shocked as he took few steps away to stand beside Cas and Dean.
"Cas, I'm gonna kick your ass man! For keeping this from us-..." Dean said now a little nervous about the situation. Dante was a little confused.
"Whoa! Easy fellas! Dont get too jumpy, you might hurt yourself!" Dante said raising his eyebrows. Castiel ignoring their rant as he turned to speak with the white haired man.
"Dante, we are here to talk about you little trip to LA" Castiel said calmly.
"Sure why not! Before you say something about 6 men, they were no humans, just-..."
"Just meat suits for demons. We know that already from sulphur traces!" Sam said starting to see sense in the situation.
"Finally, someone's level headed!" Dante said throwing a shade at Dean to which he rolled his eyes.
"But if you are a hunter, why haven't we heard about you? We have catalog on every hunter in the states, except you" Sam asked curiously.
"Well, I was so occupied with my own work here. Cas even asked me to help out with a certain darkness problem. But I had to take care of a family matter at that time, involving a city sized weed I had to prune!" Dante said sarcastically.
"Wait, you mean the demonic invasion in Redgrave city, Connecticut?" Dean asked remembering the apocalyptic event that happened that he saw and heard on TV and Radio.
"Yep, had to fight my pissed off twin brother to knock some sense into him" Dante said.
"Great, so 2 Cambions?" Sam asked raising his eyebrows.
"Why did you come all the way from here to California to hunt those demons?" Castiel finally asked the relevant question.
"Well, those demons were looking for a book, Necronomicon precisely" Dante said which stunned the three. Of course they know about it all.
"The Sumerian book of the dead!?" Castiel asked wondering why would anyone even want that. As an angel, he knows everything about the book and the legends surrounding it that never ends well for anyone.
"Those books contains dangerous spells, raising the dead, summoning ancient beings from other side" Sam said who has studied about the book on his journey along with Dean.
"Who and why is anyone even looking for that?" Dean asked feeling a new big threat might have surfaced after 5 years of silence.
"That's what I'm aiming to find out. Those demons I killed were summoned by someone, maybe a witch to do his or her bidding. But as to why they need that book? They want to break the seal of one of the prime evils, a terror lord to rule hell, fill in Lucifer's vacant seat" Dante finished saying as he took another sip of beer. This news didn't really sit well with the others.
"But Crowley is the current ruler of hell. He's-..." Dean said before cut off by Dante.
"I know who he is. Ran into him years back to retract a deal he made with a poor chap. Gotta say, his days as the president of hell ain't gonna last long!" Dante said which confused the others.
"What do you mean? So there's some secret plot to overthrow him?" Dean asked wondering the implications.
"Seems that way. But only one way to find out is by having a little chit chat with the self-proclaimed ruler" Dante said.
"Agreed, after all it was the demons that's conspiring against him" Sam said.
"But wait, Prime evil, Terror lord? What's that?" Dean asked confused as he had not learned about them. But Castiel was not amused by the mention of it. Infact, he was having a mild trauma of past memories when he was in heaven, serving god.
"Al'Diabolos, the lord of terror" Castiel said to which Dante nodded and smirked.
...
"Who is that? A Demon?" Sam asked curious know about this.
"Worse than a demon! In the early days of Lucifer's reign, there were 3 brothers in hell. Baul, Mephisto and Diablo. Diablo was the most powerful of them all, powerful enough to challenge Lucifer for ruling Hell. He lost the fight, But Lucifer knew better. He made a deal with the brothers, to grant them a section of his hell to rule, in exchange for their help in storming the gates of heaven in his rebellion. I remember fighting them, their armies to defend the citadel. Diablo was merciless, he slaughtered a lot of my brothers and sisters. That's when the other archangels Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Amenadiel and the citadel's chief guardian Archon combined their celestial powers and defeated them and sent them back to hell"
"But that didn't stop him though. In a fit of rage, not accepting defeat, he started to fight his own kind, picking fights with other hell lords, he grew to be so problematic, that even Lucifer failed to control him. He escaped the hell into the human world and grew more powerful through the devil worshippers and feeding on poor bastards souls. That's when Lucifer sought out the help of Balrog, king of fire hell and Sparda, my father and with the help of wizards of the old age to seal him away using the spells from that book" Dante finished explaining. Balrog already talked to Dante and gave him all the information he needed for this case.
"Well, you too seemed to know a lot of celestial history" Sam said feeling intrigued.
"Well, I have my sources" Dante gave a blunt response.
"But Wait? Sparda? That's your father?" Sam asked feeling overwhelmed as he realized he was talking to a son of the legendary dark knight.
"Sparda?" Dean asked not knowing who that is.
"Dean, THE SPARDA! The demon that turned against its own kind to protect humanity 2000 years ago. Legends says he solo'd the entire underworld and sealed them away with his powers. There's a separate chapter dedicated to that in Book of the damned!" Sam said excited and also a bit terrified since he now understood what Castiel meant by that Dante is feared across heaven and hell.
"Holy shit! Looks like I'm a lot famous than I thought!" Dante made a sarcastic quip.
"But either way, we need to find who or which ever witch is behind this and stop them before they bring Diablo back" Castiel said firmly to which the others agreed.
"But my money's on someone else, someone crazy enough to pull this stunt. A certain red head witch!" Dean said glancing at the others to which Sam immediately understood who he was referring to.
"You think Rowena's behind this?" Sam asked confused though he knew its not out of the realm of possibility.
"Whoa whoa! Rowena Mcleod? That scottish red head you mean!?" Dante asked surprised at the name reference.
"You know her too?" Castiel asked as he himself didn't know that he was already acquainted with her.
"Damn! How much secrets can one guy keep?" Dean asked confused.
"Well, there are a lot of things i keep to myself. Either way, Yeah! Just when I thought people's obsession over me and my brother was gone a long time back, she came all outta nowhere wanted take my soul and -...you know, empower herself, her magic!" Dante said remembering the charades he's been through years back.
"Really?" Sam asked not feeling right with this. Of course, a cambion's celestial power is so much a witch can draw energy from them.
"Yeah, it happened decades ago. But sad, it didnt end well for her. I hunted her down and gave here a clear warning not to piss me off" Dante said with a chuckle.
"So what do we do now?" Castiel asked.
"Well, seems our mission has some how made us cross paths! We can-..."
*DISTANT GRUNTING SOUND*
Dante said as they all heard a deep bass growl outside to which Dante smirked in enthusiasm. Castiel spotted some tiny glowing light moving in the air at great speed.
"Something's out there. I see a lot of yellow lights moving" Castiel said as he drew his angel blade.
"Look!" Sam said pointing out his fingers in the distance where everyone saw the yellow light and red mist like substance moving at great speed. Dante instantly recognized them and felt enthused, since he's about to get a good fight.
"Its not light, they're eyes. Furies, demons that warp around enemies, rip you to shreds" Dante said as he slowly stepped out of the building.
"Sam, get the guns!" Dean said as he pulled out his gun but Dante stopped them midway.
"Fellas, you 3 sit this one out. Lemme take care of this" Dante said as he walked front.
"Fine, if you got death wish, be our guest, but we will defend ourselves!" Dean said as Sam loaded his shotgun. Dante turned to look at Dean giving a chuckle as he walked forward. Then he lifted his right arm as a huge demonic sword appeared in his hand from a flash of hell fire. Dean and Sam were stunned to see that.
"What the-...!?" Dean said.
All of a sudden, one of the furies revealed itself fully as it lunged towards Dante at light speed, about to slash him with its wrist mounted fiery red blade. Sam and Dean were horrified at the sight of the demon as they had never seen anything like that, let alone anything faster. Even for Castiel, this is the first time he is seeing the furies and even the angel looks a bit terrified. He clearly realized they are not the demons from their known circle of hell.
Dante with his lightning reflex immediately pierced it body with his sword as it dropped dead instantly. Then he swung the sword upwards as the demon flew from his blade in the air and fell down. Then Dante gave a hook kick to its body as it flew away hitting the other furies that were already charging at him. They all lost momentum spreading out randomly in all directions.
Dante immediately ran at top speed and leapt from the ground. in mid-air, he positioned himself upside down as he spun his body twice and threw the devil sword Dante. He then landed on the ground as his sword was spinning in circle cutting through all the furies at blinding speed, killing them all. Then the sword like a boomerang, precisely reached his left arm, which he grabbed and threw it to his right hand and forward slashed a fury that was teleporting from the top aiming at Dante's head. The sword and the fury's wrist blade collided as let out a sonic boom. But the force behind Dante's sword was so much it shattered the blade. The fury was confused for a second but didnt get a chance to react as Dante pierced its abdomen turning backwards and killing it. He drew the sword immediately and did a backward butterfly twist as he narrowly flew between two fury's wrist blades that were swinging towards him from opposite direction.
Dante instantly lifted his sword, aiming at the furies and stingered the one to his right. Then he swung the sword in right side, with the dead fury still attached, as it hit second fury in his left. Then at full force, he launched both the furies in the air and took his ivory gun and shot two rounds that incinerated their bodies.
The threat of furies were finally neutralized by the son of Sparda.
Meanwhile the spectators, Sam, Dean and Castiel were gazing at him, awestruck by his showoff. Though Castiel has seen his abilities before, it was totally eye opening for the Winchester brothers. They have their fair share of experience fighting the demonic and they were already scared at the sight of the furies, their grotesque appearance, their speed. They knew they would have never stood a chance against these demons that can hit at your blind spot.
But they just saw Dante man handling them like a rented mule fearing the white haired man even more.
"Hooh! Finally! I was getting bored without some action, hah ha!" Dante said sarcastically. He didnt even try to fight this fight and wished it lasted longer to be honest. He walked towards the trio holding his sword in his right hand.
Sam and Dean were visibly shaken by the entire drama and they are much more tensed at the sight of Dante having seen what he can do. Dean and Sam have been cocky in the past and even got away with terrifying encounters, but they know hen not to push that button.
"Easy guys! Why are you still tensed? The threats dealt with! I'm gonna need another beer" he said as he proceeded to walk in.
"Sam and Dean are seeing you fight for the first time. They are a bit-..." Castiel said searching for the right word to use to describe their feelings.
"flattered?" Dante asked as he drank another can of beer.
"Terrified!" Dean spoke, now in a bit serious tone. Dante has always been humorous in all the situations. He never knew fear, having faced a lot a of demon lords in his life time. But he could see the distress in the brothers face. He understood that feeling and decided to calm them down.
"*SIGH* Listen guys, I take it you haven't seen someone fight like this, even someone like me. But I am not your enemy here. I don't get it! You didn't tell everything about me!? C'mon man, you know everything" Dante said turning to Castiel.
"I didn't tell them everything" he replied, sighing as he glanced at Sam and Dean.
"Listen, we don't work with anyone new just like that. We have had our fair share of mistrust, betrayal along the way" Sam spoke as Dante casually listened to him.
"We need a bit of trust between us, to keep working on this case till the end. If not, we can go our separate ways, but then we'll cross paths eventually" Sam said carefully looking at the devil hunter.
"Alright, gotcha! To tell you guys about myself a bit, you need to know who Sparda is" Dante said.
"We're all ears. We still got time till daylight hits" Dean said as the conversation went on.
...
"So Sparda, the Demon general of Emperor Mundus turned against his own kind for protecting humanity and solo'd the entire underworld? Huh, never knew Demons are capable of loving people!" Dean said sarcastically, also a bit skeptical of the story.
"Sparda was not a fallen angel. He was pure demon born in the underworld millions of years ago, a spawn of Amara herself. Mundus was the first dark celestial, first child of darkness. He was so powerful that our father, God himself had to use the Armageddon blade to banish him. Sparda trained to become the most powerful swordsman that Mundus made him his executioner and was feared and worshipped by other demons. But his encounter with humans was what changed him. He felt love for the first time he betrayed his own kind for that"
"So Basically Dante and his brother are related to Amara? When were you born?" Sam asked as he was curiously listening to the story Castiel was telling them.
55 years ago, Sparda in his human form, met a woman named Eva and fell in love with her. They were married and had twin sons, Dante and his elder brother Vergil" the angel said.
"There she is" Dante said turning to point towards a framed painting of a beautiful woman in the wall.
"Wait, that blonde chick is your mom? Damn!" Dean said with a smirk. drooling at the picture to which Sam sighed. Dante rolled his eyes though didn't take any offense. Besides, it is true that Eva was one of the most beautiful woman.
"Yep, though drooling is not gonna get you anywhere!" Dante said.
"So what happened after?" Sam asked.
"My father disappeared 7 years later and we presumed him to be dead. When we were all one big happy family, after our eighth birthday, demons sent by Mundus invaded our manor burned it down trying to kill us all. Cuz you know, he always hated my father for the backstabbing. My mom died, my brother lost, I left Redgrave and grew up on my own" Dante said still remembering the day their mother died.
"And Vergil?" Dean asked intrigued by the tale.
"Well, I thought he died too, but then we crossed paths when we were 18. But-...he was on a different path, in mad lust for power thinking it was his fault he couldn't save our mother. But after years and decades passed, we are at a stage where Vergil's a grandpa and I am a grand uncle and we have settled all our differences" he said taking the last sip of the beer.
"So your brother's gotta son or daughter?" Dean asked.
"A son, name's Nero. A mean, flippant, kid with serious anger management issues. Though he's a softie now, having a daughter and all-..." Dante said with a hilt of humor.
"Wow! That's seriously a lot to take in. But thanks for the help back there and with this case!" Dean said finally deciding to give the devil hunter a little benefit of doubt.
"That's all for now. Need to get some sleep! See ya all tomorrow. Gotta case already to work on so wont be around all the time. In case you find anything, let me know" Dante finally wrapping up for the night.
"Fine, we will talk tomorrow. Maybe with you, Crowley will give more info on this one" Castiel said to which he nodded.
"But be careful! Those furies hadn't showed up at my doorstep for a long time until now!" Dante said to which Dean misunderstood that statement.
"Are you blaming us for that mess?" Dean asked raising his eyebrows.
"Nope, I am saying someone's already on to you guys. So-...careful out there" Dante said to which Sam nodded in agreement.
"Agreed, its oddly convenient. Maybe the ones lookin for the book could be watching us. Either way, we need to hurry! Lets move out" Sam said.
"We will staying in the nearest hotel. Will talk to you tomorrow if we get anything" Dean said to which Dante nodded.
With that Sam, Dean and Castiel left the agency building and drove the impala away. Dante was silently standing as he smirked.
"Well, Balrog, you gotta pay me a lot of cash up front for this gig!" Dante muttered.
...
