TITLE

ACT 3

INT – OMEGA PLUG

ZERA is meditating before losing her calm trying to synch with the EVA. The colors around her shift from blue to orange. A red light starts flashing.

Background noise grows into the voices of the bridge crew losing control of the situation. Crossfade into the face of the Omega unit.

RACHEL (V.O)

Shut it down.

AUTUMN (V.O)

Overridden. We've lost

control.

JEFF (V.O)

Neural surge.

VANCE (V.O.)

Countermeasures failed.

She's going rogue.

ZERA opens here eyes in fear and defeat.

The EVA, being restrained in a testing area springs to life and breaks free from its' restraints. The EVA is contained within a giant white containment area with a windowed viewing deck where EARL, RACHEL, AUTUMN, JEFF and VANCE are observing. The EVA looks as though it is losing its' mind and attacks the viewing deck. As the other characters duck for cover, EARL still stands defiant. Shattering bulletproof glass falls around his feet.

RACHEL

Kill the power.

AUTUMN pulls an emergency lever that blasts the umbilical cable from Omega units' back. The EVA turns and tries to claw its way out of the room.

RACHEL

Bakelite. Pump it!

Nozzles reveal themselves and spray hot Phenol and formaldehyde in an acid solution onto the feet of the EVA. The Bakelite puffs and foams at the EVAs' feet and becomes a hardened pinkish spongy material quickly which hardens and holds the EVA in place. The EVA roars and clutches its' head. The fairing on it's back blasts off.

AUTUMN

Ejection sequence activated!

EARL

Damn it!

ZERAs' plug ejects, and rams into the ceiling before rocketing to the corner of the room, pinning itself there.

RACHEL

Vent the chamber!

JEFF

30 seconds activation remaining.

Vents at the top of the chamber engage fans and suck out the air from the area. The entry plug falls from the chamber and crashes to the ground.

EARL

Zera!

RACHEL, wearing a gas mask attempts to give one to EARL, who refuses the mask and runs from the room. The EVA ceases activation, left in an unnerving pose, clawing at the steel walls. Coughing, EARL runs to the Entry plug, and places his hands on the ejection hatch. This immediately burns him. EARL reels back, his glasses falling, and forming a crack. EARL bears the searing pain of the hatch handles and opens the hatch, dumping the LCL from the plug. From above, RACHEL removes her mask, mortified that EARL would bear such pain for someone else. EARL enters the plug.

EARL

Zera!

Badly injured, but still at the helm, ZERA makes eye contact with EARL.

EARL

Don't worry. We'll make this right.

EARLs' Glasses lay in the pool of LCL, and a deeper crack forms in the lens.

ZERA

THE ECHO OF A DISTANT HEARTBEAT

EXT – MORNING STAR STREET – DAY

SHANE walks to a base entrance. He sees ZERA ahead and jogs a bit to catch up to her. They walk alongside one another awkwardly.

SHANE

Good morning.

ZERA does not reply.

SHANE

Yeah. I quit for a bit but

I hope you don't hold it

against me. After all that

happened I needed some time.

They walk to the base and enter through thick, tall doors that require a key card swipe.

SHANE(ctd.)

Why are there armored doors this size?

Angels are way bigger.

INT - PLATFORM

They board a bus gondola which departs for the base.

INT - GONDOLA

The Road and the miles to Dundee is playing by piano on the gondola's elevator speaker.

SHANE(ctd.)

It's a weird feeling being this high

up when I know I'm underground…This is

the road to Dundee. It's an old

Scottish folk song. On a winter

day, back when it used to snow,

the whole land was cold and

windy and a young lady asked a

man "How do I get to Dundee?"

He says "Can't tell you. Have

to show you." So they walk to

Dundee and he falls in love with her.

He Gives her his broach and kisses

her. But then he goes home and

they never meet again.

The gondola descends to the landing platform over an almost excruciating length of time. ZERA says nothing and SHANE finally just shrugs her off, accepting that she will not talk to him.

INT - LOCKER

SHANE gets dressed in his plug suit.

INT – THE CAGE

The entry plug is inserted into Unit Alpha.

INT – ALPHA UNIT

SHANE synchronizes with the EVA and on screen he sees ZERA inspecting Omega unit. EARL approaches and ZERA stops what she is doing and starts speaking with EARL. SHANE zooms the image to see their faces. EARL is apparently proud of her work and ZERA appears to enjoy speaking to EARL.

SHANE

Are you fucking kidding me?

INT – SONYAS' APARTMENT – EVENING.

SHANE lies on the couch in the living room. RACHEL and SONYA are serving up dinner, in front of him kneeling on the floor at at a cofee table with three set plates. SONYA presents terrible half-baked, half burnt casserole.

RACHEL

To know that there's food scarcity

in this world and there are monsters

like you who want to do this to

what's left of it!

SONYA

You don't like it? Leave. Shane!

Dinner!

SHANE

Not hungry.

SONYA

Suit yourself.

SONYA serves up slices and knowingly serves SHANEs' plate. SHANE gets up and comes to the table. As he is sitting SONYA is pouring beer on her casserole.

SHANE

Really?

SONYA

You have to make a sludge. The alcohol

emulsifies the flavor. You'll see when

you get older.

RACHEL and SHANE take a bite. They don't bother hiding their disgust.

SHANE

Wow.

SONYA

You like it?

RACHEL

I won't come back here unless Shane

is doing the cooking.

SONYA

Aw. I tried so hard.

PENNY approaches her bowl for her slice of casserole, she takes a bite, passes out and rolls over like a fallen bowling pin.

RACHEL

I've had bad roommates before, Shane

if you need out we can arrange new

digs.

SONYA

I'm right here, you know.

SHANE

I've settled in. Besides, if I

hadn't moved in this place would

still be a beer can junk yard.

SONYA

Yeah! Hi! Hi! Hello. Still here.

I mentioned that part, right?

SHANE

I'm not apologizing. Shape up,

Sonya. You want to live buried in

trash?

RACHEL

Sure. Have you seen her exes?

SONYA (Pouts)

Oh, leave me alone. I'm adapting.

We have a working living space here.

Relocating him now would mean

paperwork. We only just reissued his

ID.

RACHEL

OH! That reminds me.

RACHEL takes out an identification card. It's of ZERA. RACHEL hands it over to SHANE.

RACHEL

You know Zera, right Shane?

SHANE

What about her?

RACHEL

That's her card. I haven't had the

time to issue it to her.

In RACHELS' voice is a hint of indignity. SHANE takes the card and looks at it. It's an unassuming ID, and the photo is unremarkable, but he looks at her in curiosity.

SHANE

So you want me to drop it off?

She lives down in Everett, I know that.

RACHEL

If you could?

SHANE

Ah, sure. I'll see her before you

do anyway.

SHANE is still transfixed by the image of ZERA.

SONYA

You like what you see?

SHANE

Huh?

SONYA

Zera. You seem to like her picture.

Feel like chasing some tail, hm?

SHANE

What the hell are you saying?

SONYA

Nya, Nya, Nya. I know what boys like.

SHANE

Oh my god, you think I see a girls

picture and instantly think 'goddamn

can't wait to what? I don't know…

plow that field.' Give it a rest.

RACHEL
Shane, Manners.

SONYA

I like watching him go ballistic.

RACHEL

Hey, remember Anthony?

SONYA

No! No! No! No! He is off limits!

Why would you even bring him up?

RACHEL

Because you go ballistic.

SONYA

You bitch.

RACHEL

Manners.

SONYA

Anyway, Shane, you guys are in the

same job, you see each other every

day. Why are you hung up on her?

SHANE

I'm not hung up.

I don't know. We don't talk.

She worried me when we first met.

She was all banged up, but she never

talked about why.

RACHEL

That was an accident that happened

during the Omega unit activation.

It was bad.

SHANE

She got hurt that bad but still comes

to work? So why does she pilot? Anyway, she

won't tell me, I'm sure.

SONYA

So she's introverted. Don't let

that stop you.

SHANE

But she's not though. Really.

She'll talk your ear off. I've

seen it.

RACHEL

Is that so?

SHANE sees something strange in RACHELs' demeanor. He doesn't want to tell any more about it.

SHANE

I just know it. She has a lot to

say.

RACHEL

Well…She's a lot like your father.

SHANE

They both never talk to me? Yup.

RACHEL

Everyday life eludes them. He built

his position from the ground up and

after Zera was selected by the Marduk

institute he made a place for her.

To the exclusion of everyone else.

They might know each other better

than any two people in Morning Star…

You ever hear of the hedgehogs'

dilemma?

SHANE

No.

RACHEL

Imagine hedgehogs in the cold.

the only way they can keep warm

is to bunch together. But when

they gather close their spines poke

each other. There's no good distance

for them. For humans it's the same

problem. The cold is called loneliness,

the spines are called identity…Or

something like that. Our very

identities stop us from being intimate.

SONYA

But without our identities what would

we be?

RACHEL

I don't know. But we wouldn't be

lonely.

SHANE puts ZERAs card on the table, face up.

SHANE

I'm more cynical.

SONYA

What do you mean?

SHANE

We can painfully pull the spines from

ourselves, make bleeding bald spots

to rub together, but we must hand

those spines to the ones we trust.

Then wait for them to inevitably,

deliberately stick us in the raw.

SONYA

That's stupid. If people were that

self-destructive how did we get this

far?

RACHEL

She said at the end of the world.

SONYA

Exactly my point.

SHANE

Pain is packaged in honesty and

pleasures can always lie. Maybe

it would be better if she doesn't

talk to me. I'm sure she'd be

brutally honest. Hedgehogs'

dilemma, huh?

SONYA pokes him.

SHANE

Stop. Stop. Stop it.

SHANE pokes back. SONYA laughs.

SONYA

No! No! I'm ticklish!

SONYA and SHANE wrestle while RACHEL scowls looking at the photo of ZERA. RACHEL hates ZERA.

EXT – ZERAS' APARTMENT - DAY

The dilapidated, almost makeshift post-apocalyptic emergency concrete building that houses ZERAs' apartment along with columns and stacks of identical slum housing stands indistinct from the other adjacent apartment complexes basking in the perpetual summer heat. The ten second delayed clanging of an unseen mechanical hammer in the nearby industrial district pounds constantly. The shuffling and humming of other distant mechanical drives and machinery absorb the low end of the audio.

SHANE climbs the stairway to ZERAs' apartment #0641 and he looks out over the veranda to the desolation downhill and the crippled Space needle. He breathes a sigh, turns and knocks on the door. The door gives no resistance and slowly opens with the force of his knock. Perplexed he leans in. He knocks on the open door.

SHANE (Timidly, expecting her nearby)

Zera?

SHANE walks in, quietly closes the door and removes his shoes. He proceeds past the entrance into the short hall and into the studio. There is a bed, more of a cot. Discarded bloody bandages overflow a cardboard box. There is a single half-glass of water on a nearby table with unwashed plate and cutlery. SHANE is drawn to a pair of glasses on the dresser; it's lenses cutting the sunlight. He approaches and picks up the glasses, seeing how they have been warped and cracked.

SHANE (Ctd)

Naa.

He puts on the glasses and behind him he hears a noise of footsteps. He turns to see ZERA, nude, holding a towel to dry her hair. SHANE freezes when their eyes meet. ZERA drops her towel.

SHANE(Ctd)

You're awake?

ZERA walks up to him. SHANE closes his eyes and holds up his hands.

SHANE (Ctd)

Zera, I'm sorry I-

She walks right into him, not even caring that it presses her left breast into the palm of his right hand. She backs him into the dresser and without even thinking right into his personal space, just because he was being forced, in panic he places his right left on her thigh, and they slip backward and against the counter at an angle that forces her body upon him SHANE has a solid foothold, but ZERA is off her toes. She presses closer to him. He's backed all the way up and his hand moves to her ass without him even knowing it.

SHANE

What do you want, Zera? Do you want-

ZERA

Don't move.

He looks away.

ZERA

Look me in the eyes.

Their eyes meet. SHANES' gaze is unbroken, but ZERA glances all over the glasses, checking everything, even the cracks. ZERA needs to make sure that SHANE did not damage them.

SHANE

Zera, I've never done something

like this I don't-

ZERA

Hold still.

ZERA takes the glasses off of his face, turns and examines them more closely. ZERA bends over shamelessly to pick up the towel. Then turns and walks back to SHANE.

SHANE

What do you want to do?

ZERA

Move.

SHANE

Make my move?

ZERA

Move over.

SHANE moves to one side. ZERA moves to the dresser and opens the glasses case. She places the glasses in the case and closes it.

ZERA (ctd)

Why are you here?

SHANE

Your ID is expired. I have the

replacement.

ZERA opens her drawer takes out a pair of panties and puts them on before turning to SHANE with her hand out.

ZERA

Give it to me.

SHANE cowardly snaps it face down onto the dresser before turning to leave the apartment.

EXT – STREET - LATER

SHANE is at the landing of the building. ZERA exits and he follows her. He follows her on a train, once looking in her direction. He follows her on the same sidewalk he had followed her the previous day. ZERA approaches the gate to slide her card. Just as an access granted read flashes on the screen SHANE grabs her hand from the next lane over.

SHANE

Zera, I made a mistake. I'm sorry.

ZERA

About what?

SHANE

Look…That's not your card. I

accidentally gave you mine.

Don't know how, but they know

who is using what card.

SHANE offers the replacement. Overhead shot of ZERA who snaps down SHANES' card, takes her replacement leaving SHANEs' card behind. SHANE swipes in but the kiosk responds that SHANEs' card has a no double use error and since been used too closely with the previous swipe he has to jump into ZERAs' Kiosk and jump the gate before it closes. The two of them head to the platform and onto the gondola. They take seats, SHANE in the front and ZERA in the middle. They are on opposite sides. The gondola descends.

SHANE

Your activation test is today,

isn't it?

ZERA does not respond.

SHANE(ctd)

I know the Omega unit went haywire

last time they tried. That it was

how you were injured.

ZERA again gives no response.

SHANE(ctd)

Come on, Zera, talk to me. This

thing could kill you. Don't you

have any reservations?

ZERA stands and walks to SHANE and looks down at him.

ZERA

Do you think it can't kill you?

SHANE
No. I know it can kill me.

Do you know what that means?

It means I can't fail or else

it's all for nothing. Then what?

Do you know what that feels like?

Do you really want to know?

ZERA

Stop trying to talk me out of this,

Shane. This is what I want to do.

SHANE

No it's not. You're just like me.

You're doing this because he makes

you feel worthless if you don't.

ZERA

Your father has a vision and I am

privileged to be a part of it. But

that is not why I pilot, and you

wouldn't understand.

SHANE

Try me.

ZERA

You backed down, Shane. Both times

you backed away from piloting until

someone else was in danger and you

had to deal with the thought of

living with some guilt. To pilot is

to accept and to be a pilot is to be

accepted. Isn't that what you want?

Why, then, run away? I heard you.

"I mustn't run away." You said it

over and over again. You'll never

run away from yourself, Shane.

You'll always be attached to your

shadow but still you run away. That's

why your father was exactly, absolutely

right to leave you behind.

SHANE stands and slaps ZERA. They shoot each other a glare before ZERA resumes her seat and SHANE sits as well.

INT - NERV BASE

The gondola descends from a long way off as RACHEL steps up and waits for its' arrival. The door opens and she shuffles SHANE off.

RACHEL

Shane, hurry. I just received vital

orders from the commander.

SHANE

About what? Is there an attack?

I don't hear any sirens.

RACHEL

Don't even bother suiting up. Get

to the EVA.

SHANE

I'm going! Damn.

SOS - RACHEL gets SHANE into the ALPHA unit as soon as she can.

INT – THE CAGE

SHANES' entry plug is inserted into the EVA.

SHANE

Beginning synchronization.

Nothing happens.

SHANE (CTD)

Oh. OK. Uh.

SHANE checks a monitor on the plug. Red lights.

SHANE (CTD)

Hello? Command? Shane Eastman, unit alpha.

The launch safeties are still active.

No synch. Nothing. We're cold.

still no answer.

SHANE (CTD)

Well look. If we're not launching,

we're not even synched pop me out

of here. What are you doing?

I'd like to eject. Requesting an

eject-ulation. Rachel, Sonya,

Anybody are you out there?...Louder!

A sound only window pops up on the plugs' lining.

EARL (V.O)

You're on lockdown for three hours.

SHANE

What? What the fuck?

EARL (V.O)

Touch her again and you will be sent

away from this place if you're lucky.

The sound only window clicks off. SHANE attempts to reactivate the comm, then beats on the side of the sled.

SHANE

She started it! Don't hang up on

me! Son of a bitch! Get back here.

Fucking cocksucker! Asshole.

INT – TEST CHAMBER

EARL cuts off his son while he is still ranting. He walks up the corridor in the test chamber and turns to RACHEL who is calibrating the devices.

EARL

How long until confirmation on final

ganglion alignment?

RACHEL

Another hour and a half, I'm afraid.

Spinal synch, of course, suffered

the most.

EARL

Make sure you take your time, now.

RACHEL

Now? As opposed to what? Then?

That wasn't an error made in

haste, Earl.

EARL looks at her slowly intending to communicate to never call him Earl while they are in uniform.

RACHEL (CTD)

I promise she's going to be

just fine this time, Commander.

I know what she means to you.

EARL

You absolutely do not.

EARL returns his gaze back to the fettered Omega unit.

INT - WOMENS' LOCKER

ZERA dresses in her plug suit, doing her best to calm her Nerves, while still portraying her gray, implacable demeanor. From her pocket she draws up EARL's glasses in their case. She observes the glasses closely and is overtaken by the most reassuring sensation. She then closes the case and walks to the test chamber. She enters the chamber and crosses the room below her giant EVA, she enters a lift platform and is raised to a landing where the image tracks her until she takes a straight walk towards the Entry plug.

EXT – PACIFIC OCEAN SURFACE - DAY

The sea is a glassy blue and offers no sound but the softest breeze, not even gulls. From the surface of the sea silently slips forth a crystalline pyramid that rises with naught but gentle ripples and cascading rivulets across its' smooth azure surface. The pyramid stops its growth and it is an enormous sight, as though a pyramid of Giza had been made of flawless crystal. A wide angle image shows not just the pyramid itself, but the perfect reflection of the top half in the sea.

The pyramid rises again, extruding an inverse pyramid on its opposite side. The object rises above the surface of the sea and hovers in the light of the noonday sun. A red, spherical core lights up from within, at the exact center of the diamond shape; the familiar glow of the angel. The angel hums in many soft voices, one of them sings soft, crying siren notes.

CROSSFADE TO…

INT – ZERAs' plug.

The plug hums, it has its own musical drone. ZERA rests in the throne, waiting for her orders, calming herself in the silence.

EARL come on screen before her.

EARL

The test will begin shortly.

Dr. Archbold has made every

preparation.

ZERA

Understood.

EARL

You don't have to worry about

anything this time.

ZERA

I won't be long.

Earl cuts off the video feed. There is a soft moment of humming. Zera's plug then washes into a bright green color before displays open all around. First a green series of go aheads and confirmations, then a red series of charts and results for the test. ZERA is surrounded by displays indicating the synchronization progress right in front of her. By the handle is EARLs pair of glasses. From the observation deck EARL, SONYA and RACHEL watch the synchronization while AUTUMN manages the console. The red connections turn green and climb. ZERA closes her eyes and visualizes her imagination.

Mountains, sturdy, enduring but

withered away by flows of time.

Blue sky, seeing all that is

Sun, the singular star of our lives.

Water, a comfortable embrace.

I am here to be with you.

Flowers. Beauty and frailty,

alike, unnamed and temporary.

Red sky, the breaking of day, the

descent of night. Red, the

hateful color. Blood. Though

I bleed not, I know well your

smell. Women that may bleed

may birth their bloodline.

Mankind from out of red soil.

City, a thing made by people.

Eva, a thing made by people.

What and why and how are people?

Are people made by the universe?

Are people made by god?

Are people made by people?

I was made to possess my heart

and this soul.

By existence alone am I worthy

to exist.

But what am I? What am I?

What am I? What am I? What am I?

I am myself. I am an object that

is me and this object expresses

that which I am.

I will fade away from time and

others will go on. I know

others are beyond me, I know

there is another here.

You have your own mind and

you are reaching out even now.

Humans bond with one another.

Bonds can be painful. Bonds

can be joyful. Bonds may break.

Bonds build the future.

Who are you?

Who are you?

Who are you?

Make a bond with me now.

The synchronization meter clears the activation threshold and the Omega unit comes online.

AUTUMN

We have cleared the activation

threshold. The Omega unit is

active. Synchronization 27% and

climbing.

SONYA turns on her com and leans into the mic.

SONYA

Zera, EVA unit engaged. Well

done.

PLUG

ZERA

Roger. Beginning first interlock

test.

EXT – COUNTRYSIDE – DAY

The huge, crystalline angel hovers over the landscape, high above it all.

INT – TEST CHAMBER

The intercom phone rings and EARL answers.

WINTERS (V.O.)

Commander, we've detected an Angel

approaching from the south.

EARL

Understood. I'm on my way.

EARL hangs up the phone.

EARL (CTD)

Captain, angel inbound.

SONYA

I'll get Shane to the EVA

immediately.

EARL

He's already on standby.

Get to the command center.

SONYA

Yes, sir.

SONYA leaves.

EARL

Doctor, see to it that the

Omega unit is sent to the

cage.

RACHEL

Yes, sir.

EARL gets back on the comm.

PLUG

EARL (V.O.)

Zera, you may return now.

ZERA

Yes, sir.

ZERA breathes a sigh of relief.

INT – CATWALK

ZERA walks along the catwalk watching the Alpha unit being hoisted into the catapult. ZERA looks up to the EVA with confidence. The EVA is locked into place.

BRIDGE

The battle display show that the floating double pyramid is hovering towards the city.

JEFF

Alpha unit ready for launch

SONYA enters.

SONYA

It's already on top of us.

Fire him up there.

ALPHA UNIT PLUG.

SHANE is asleep.

The EVA launches and SHANE is shaken awake.

SHANE

What? What? Oh my god.

SHANE activates the EVA as it fires upward.

SHANE (CTD)

Sonya? What's going on?

SONYA (V.O.)

Shane? Were you paying attention?

SHANE

I just got up. What's happening?

SONYA (V.O.)

The target is entering our air

space above the south. Arm

with a cannon and take it out.

SHANE

Is this a drill?

SONYA (V.O.)

This is not a drill.

SHANE

Shit.

EXT – AREAL SHOT

The angel charges it's central polygon with energy.

BRIDGE

JEFF

Ma'am, the angel is building

some kind of internal energy

field.

SONYA

It's doing what?

JEFF

The energy is compiling on

itself. It will definitely

discharge.

SONYA

Shane!

EXT – CITY

The EVA clears the street, and locks into launch position.

PLUG

SONYA (V.O.)

Shane! Dodge.

SHANE

Dodge what?

EXT – CITY

From high above a laser beam emits from the angel and blasts the Alpha unit square in the chest. The beam melts through the armor plate on the EVAs' chest and reveals a white hot sphere, like an angels' core. SHANE screams in agony.

BRIDGE

SONYA

Withdraw the EVA.

VANCE

The ramp has overheated. It's

not responding.

SONYA

Launch a bulkhead. Give him some

cover.

STREET

An Iron bulkhead slab rises out of the ground. As it rises, the slab is melted by the beam. SHANE is at the mercy of the beam still.

SHANE

Sonya! It burns! Get me out

of here! Oh, God.

BRIDGE

JEFF

His vitals are dropping.

He won't last much longer.

SONYA

Fire the explosive bolts.

get him out of there.

VANCE

Yes, ma'am

STREET

The explosive bolts fire and the EVA drops into the shaft below.

BRIDGE

RACHEL enters and heads to JEFFs' terminal.

VANCE

The EVA is in free fall. ETA 20

seconds.

RACHEL

He's passed out. As soon as the

EVA lands give him a heart

massage.

SONYA

I'm headed to the cage.

SONYA runs to the cage, and from behind JEFF shouts at her.

JEFF

He's hitting the emergency

breaking system.

A clamor of screeching metal and slamming plates echo through the base. The EVA rushes down and hits the base of the launch pad with a quaking thud.

PLUG

SHANE is unconscious an electrical charging sound is heard and then discharges which convulses SHANEs' body.

CATWALK

SONYA runs to the EVA.

JEFF (Overhead)

The pilots' life signs have

stabilized.

SONYA looks back and screams.

SONYA

Eject the plug! Pop it!

Get him out of there.

SONYA reaches the platform of the EVA and ZERA is already there, waiting for her. The plug has ejected and is venting LCL which comes out steaming hot. The lid of the plug opens with a cloud of condensation. SHANE, blood dripping from his nostrils is unconscious within.

SONYA

Shane!

STREET

From high in the air the bottom of the angel projects a metallic bore that descends to the street and tunnels into the blacktop.

INT - ER

SHANE is being carted off on a gurney. SONYA keeps pace with the Doctors carting SHANE into treatment. Once SHANE gets within the door of the OR SONYA stops, watches SHANE being prepped before a nurse shuts the door on her. SONYA turns to see ZERA coming the other way.

SONYA

Why are you here, Pilot?

ZERA

I'll wait for him.

SONYA

You're our only pilot ready

for duty now. We are going

to need you.

ZERA

I will do as I am ordered.

SONYA walks away.

EXT – MISSILE PILBOX – DAY

From a long distance, with the Angel still high in the sky a missile is launched from a launcher and hones in on the angel. With a flash of light from one of its tips zaps the missile out of the air and a follow up blast destroys the pillbox in a huge fireball.

BRIDGE

SONYA watches the angel as JEFF offers status updates.

JEFF

Missile pillbox destroyed at

five hundred forty meters

to target.

SONYA

Next.

EXT – AUTOMATED HOWITZER - DAY

An automated howitzer is aimed at the angel from a rise at a greater distance.

RADIO CHATTER (V.O.)

Area clear. Weapon hot.

RADIO CHATTER 2 (V.O.)

Fire.

The cannon fires and the shell is heard hurtling through the air. The shell impacts with an explosion on the angels' AT field. Immediately after the Explosion dissipates and the AT field face vanishes and the beam blasts the face of the hill away along with the cannon.

INT – BRIDGE

Same setup. SONYA fiddles with a pen.

JEFF

The automated howitzer has

been destroyed. They did manage

to hit the AT field this time.

Range was 2.6 kilometers.

SONYA

So if we are going to attack

we need to be at least outside

of that radius. What's the status

on the boring device?

JEFF

It is still active. The drill

from the bottom of the angel is

going to penetrate all 22 layers

of protective armor and breach

the geofront just after midnight.

STREET – DAY

The drill of the angel begins to grind against some unseen obstruction.

VANCE (V.O)

Captain, the drill has reached

the first armor layer.

SONYA

That's some sass, motherfucker.

JEFF

Ma'am, with our offensive pulled

back that far what exactly do you

plan to use for a strike?

SONYA

Something doesn't add up. That

beam could melt through to the

base in half the time as that

drill. Why is it choosing to

take so long?

JEFF

Maybe there's something here

it doesn't want to harm, so

this drill is a delicate

approach.

SONYA

Maybe, but anyway, I'm not worried

about the AT field. We have a

positron cannon that should be

able to handle the load of punching

through.

JEFF

We might have the gun, but where's

the ammo? You'll need at least 180

giggawatts to do the job. We don't

have that many DeLoreans.

SONYA

But I know something we do have.

Rachel is going to love this.

SMASH CUT

INT – COMMANDER EASTMANS' OFFICE – DAY

EARL and WINTERS are behind EARLs' desk, while SONYA and RACHEL are before them.

RACHEL

No! No! No! No! Commander,

the chalice is not part of our

official arsenal. It's out main

power source!

SONYA

Commander, I need you to understand

that this is our only available

offensive option.

RACHEL

Commander, tapping into the bases'

main power supply will wreak havoc

on our architecture, We'll have to

unplug just about everything. We

might need a week to recover.

SONYA

The Magi predict that we can have

everything reconnected in seven

hours.

RACHEL

Yes, and then days of rebooting

and recalibrations!

SONYA

If that drill makes it in here

there won't be a base to reboot.

RACHEL

This is my wheelhouse you're dancing

in, Captain.

SONYA

And this is my operation. I call it

Operation Academy. It has a 3%

chance of success, which is the

highest value that even the

Magi could calculate. We're

going to wire the Central energy

source of the base, code named

chalice to the main power grid which

will distribute and direct energy to

the positron canon which we will

establish at Mt. Si. We estimate

that full setup will take eight

hours. We take the shot at midnight,

and we're back for breakfast.

WINTERS

I knew when we promoted you to

command you would find a way

to shoot from the hip, Captain.

SONYA

This angel has given us more than

enough setbacks. it's time we made

an opportunity.

EARL

We don't have a platform that can

make that kind of precision aim for

that distance and with that large

of a weapon.

SONYA

Yes we do. The Alpha unit can

make the needed adjustments. I

know she can take the shot.

EARL

Supposing that the pilot is capable.

SONYA

Yes, sir.

EARL

I have no objections. Operation

Academy is go.

SONYA

Yes, sir.

INT – HALLWAY

RACHEL and SONYA walk to the bridge.

SONYA

Don't look so sour. You know

the chalice better than anyone.

RACHEL

I'll never forgive you for this

shit.

SONYA

I promise to give you all the

credit for-

KEVIN comes around a corner and bumps into SONYA.

KEVIN

Sorry, Sonya.

SONYA

Kevin. You're a long way from

strategies and logistics again.

KEVIN

Yeah. They're keeping me busy.

SONYA

I've already had my plan approved.

You'll be getting the outline within

the hour. We'll need to wire a cable

up Mount Si. If you had a different

plan well, better luck next time.

KEVIN

Oh, you bet. My luck always gets

better.

KEVIN leaves for EARLs' office.

RACHEL

You were very casual with him,

weren't you?

SONYA

Watch out for that one. start wiring

the grid to handle the chalice.

Let's plan for both EVAs operational.

Give me a defensive option for the

Omega unit and do whatever you have

to in order to get Alpha units' chest

plate replaced.

RACHEL

I'm on it.

SOS of trucks and crew moving all the needed infrastructure out of the base and onto the road. Cranes replace the front chest plate of Alpha unit. Techs wire up the extensive cables. Cooling units prime and vent heat exhaust. Cables spark and meters climb up gauges. At the top of Mt. Si, near the haystack, Chinook helicopters deliver the rear and barrel of the gun. ZERA waits by SHANEs' side.

EXT – BASE OF MT. SI – EVENING

SONYA and RACHEL watch the progress.

SONYA

I really have to hand it to everyone.

We're probably going to beat the

schedule by at least half an hour.

RACHEL

I managed to scrounge up a defense

for the Omega unit. A shield that

can stand up to the Angels' particle

beam for at least 10 seconds.

SONYA

Where did you find something like

that?

RACHEL

It's the underside heat shield of

space shuttle Endeavor.

SONYA

You never cease to amaze, Rachel.

Now everything we need is ready

to go.

RACHEL

Except our constant fatal flaw:

The pilot of Alpha unit.

SONYA

He'll be ready. I know it.

RACHEL

What if he refuses to pilot again?

SONYA

I'm going back to base for a final

checkup. Please wait for me at the

top.

RACHEL (Sneers)

I'll wait until they send up the

port-a-potties.

SONYA goes to her car.

SONYA

Oh, come on. You ain't lived until

you've shit in the woods.

SONYA tears off back to town.

INT – HOSPITAL ROOM – EVENING

SHANE awakens from unconsciousness. Zera, reading a book looks up to see him coming around. SHANE gasps and convulses and ZERA rises to check him. SHANE tears off his oxygen mask.

ZERA

Eastman?

SHANE
Bathroom! Get me to the

bathroom now.

ZERA helps him to his feet, and he is naked as he lets the blanket slip away. Staggering, ZERA brings him to the bathroom. SHANE dives into toilet, lifts the lid and starts heaving into the bowl. ZERA pulls back to the corner as SHANE continues heaving. Finally, SHANE rolls over, drops the toilet seat and looks her in the eyes.

SHANE
Nothing came out.

ZERA

They pumped your stomach.

SHANE

Fuck.

ZERA takes a pamphlet from her back pocket.

SHANE (CTD)

What are you doing?

ZERA

At 22 hundred hours pilots are

to report to the top of Mt. Si

for the execution of Operation

Academy. Signed Captain Sonya

Quinones. I have a spare plug

suit for you. I advise that you

wear it.

SHANE

I don't even know what happened.

I just woke up and I was on fire.

ZERA

The Angel has an effective range

of less than three kilometers and

we will be operating well beyond

its' area of attack.

SHANE

I just wake up. I just wake up.

ZERA

Alpha unit is required for this

operation. You are expected to

pilot the Evangelion.

SHANE struggles to his feet. He approaches ZERA in an intimidating manner, pinning her to the wall.

SHANE

I just wake up and I get blasted

by one of those things. I wake

up and I get ordered what to do.

I wake up and I don't want to.

I don't want to wake up to this.

I can't do this anymore. I can't-

ZERA slaps SHANE.

ZERA

Get a hold of yourself.

SHANE sits on the toilet.

SHANE

I'm sorry. I'm sorry about earlier,

too. I just didn't know what to do.

I lost control.

ZERA

There is time. Would you like dinner?

SHANE

I'm not hungry.

ZERA

Pilot Eastman.

SHANE

Shane. Just Shane. I won't

answer to Eastman.

ZERA

Shane, if you aren't up to it I want

you to stay here.

SHANE

Did your Eva activate?

ZERA

Yes.

SHANE

Then you are a pilot now.

ZERA

I can take your place. You need to

recuperate. Goodbye.

ZERA walks out of the bathroom, leaving SHANE to sit and ponder.

INT – CENTRAL DOGMA, DEEP BELOW THE BASE

In a cavernous, enormous hall there is a great door. On the right hand side, raised up is a catwalk with a personnel door. There, KEVIN is working on a console, hacking into a subsystem in the base, sipping on a can of ice coffee. He hears some noise in the hall behind him. The Shadow of SONYA slinks out of sight. When KEVIN looks he sees nothing down the hall. From his pocket, KEVIN takes a spool of fishing line. He ties the line onto the tab of the can before setting the can down. KEVIN then stands and walks to an armored door at the end of the hall. He steps on the line and tightens it. Then, reaching into his pocket he takes out a key card for the card reader at the gate. He begins to punch in the numbers for the entrance when from behind him a gun cocks and is pressed against the back of his head.

SONYA

Are you ever in your office, Kevin?

KEVIN lifts his hands.

KEVIN

What brings you all the way down

here, Sonya?

SONYA

A hunch. I figured that with everyone

preoccupied it might be a good time for

someone to sneak around unnoticed.

KEVIN

You are an amazing woman.

SONYA

No flattery. Who are you working for?

KEVIN

I told you, Winters. I'm being

employed for the ends of two parties.

Us and, well, elsewhere.

I assure you that NERV has a great

deal of intel from my operation.

SONYA

And your other bosses can say the

same.

KEVIN

True. But I don't worry because I'm

not working alone. My partner is right

behind me.

KEVIN kicks his foot forward, pulling the line and the can, making a clattering sound. SONYA turns drawing her gun and KEVIN bars her arm and disarms her. He ejects the magazine of the pistol and unloads the chamber before tossing the gun. KEVIN forces SONYA to the gate.

SONYA

This won't accomplish anything,

Kevin. You're going to get found

out for this.

KEVIN

I'm not worried about that. I need

you to see this.

KEVIN slides the card through the reader and the gate opens. When the interior is exposed, SONYAs' eyes go wide.

SONYA

Impossible.

SONYA is let go by KEVIN and she enters the chamber. In the center of a pool of liquid is a giant, ghostly white being, crucified upon a great metal cross. Its' torso ends with a swarm of human sized legs, and upon its' face is a mask of seven eyes above a series of triangles. An eerie orange blood trails from the cross which appears identical to LCL.

KEVIN

I'm glad you came. You deserved

to know this. Why NERV exists,

why the EVAs were made. Why the

Angels are coming here.

SONYA

It's Adam. They're coming for Adam.

KEVIN

That's right. Now ask yourself: If

NERV has Adam, what plans do they

have for him? When the Angels are

destroyed what will NERV then do?

SONYA

Second impact.

KEVIN

Third.

SONYA

Oh my god.

KEVIN walks away.

SONYA

What are you going to do?

KEVIN

I don't know. I'll leave that up to

my partner. She's right behind me.

KEVIN leaves, SONYA shuts the Gate.

STREET – NIGHT

The angel continues to burrow into the base, and is illuminated from all sides by spotlights.

INT – GARAGE - NIGHT

SONYA walks to her car where ZERA is waiting for her. SONYA confronts her, let down that she is alone. They both hear footsteps and look to see SHANE walking toward them.

The three of them get into the car but SONYA does not start the car.

SONYA

Shane, before we go you need to know

something. What caused the second

impact?

SHANE

A meteor hit Antarctica.

SONYA

No, Shane. What caused the second

impact was an angel. It was called

Adam. It released so much energy

that it wiped out most of the world.

SHANE

Then the angels we're fighting now?

SONYA

They could cause a third impact, so

they must be stopped.

SHANE

But if we don't stop them, what then?

SONYA

That's why we need pilots, Shane.

That's why we need you. You also,

Zera. You have to save the world.

I only wish I had told you sooner.

SONYA starts the car and rolls out into the night.

EXT – BASE OF MT. SI – NIGHT

RACHEL is diagraming the assault, while calculating the effective formula for the shot. SONYA enters with the pilots.

SONYA

The port-a-potties?

RACHEL

We're taking them up in the

chopper.

SONYA

Good.

RACHEL

Pilots, have a seat.

SHANE and ZERA take their seats.

RACHEL

The target is well above Morning

Star and is currently burrowing

into the base. Shane will be

taking the shot with a 200 gigawatt

positron blast from the summit

of Mt. Si. at 00:02 hours. Be

warned, Shane. The angel's core

is focused in its' thinnest central

plane. You must hit that target.

A second shot will require a reload

of the firing fuse and a 30 second

barrel cool down.

SHANE

But what if I do miss?

RACHEL

Don't even think about it. The

targeting computers will help you

center the sights. You only need

to act at the correct moment.

SHANE

So I just pull a trigger?

RACHEL

Alpha is the only platform that

can make this shot. You're the

only one who can take it. Don't

downplay your importance.

ZERA

My orders are to defend the

Alpha unit?

RACHEL

That's right.

ZERA

Understood.

SONYA

Your EVAs are here, standing by.

Once you're dressed march them

up the hill. Take whatever downtime

you can and then we'll get underway.

Get dressed.

ZERA & SHANE

Yes Ma'am.

INT – TRAILER

SHANE and ZERA dress in their plug suits with a thin sheet separating them.

SHANE

This could be the last day we have

alive.

ZERA

Why would you say that?

SHANE

I felt that beam on me. It's too

much.

ZERA

You have nothing to fear, Shane.

I will protect you.

EXT – MT. SI BASE STATION – NIGHT

The Alpha and Omega units activate, and head up the hill.

INT – COMMANDER EASTMANS' OFFICE.

WINTERS looks up at the already damaged roof of the Geofront. EARL sits waiting. A grinding sound is heard rumbling through the walls.

WINTERS

You can hear it, can't you?

This perhaps our biggest gamble.

Without the last key to the human

instrumentality project the

angels winning here will make

everything a fools' errand.

EARL

The delivery from Germany will

take place within the week.

The project will continue. As

for the angel, do not worry.

Shane is too important to her.

She will not allow him to fail.

WINTERS

I imagine that is what worries

you the most. Would she still

commit to the project even if

it means we lose him?

EXT - TOP OF MT. SI – NIGHT

The mountain top base is set up with tents and Command vehicles. There is a trailing power cable going back down the hill. The gun rests against the haystack of the mountain. In the distance, high in the air is the Angel, still drilling down. The Evangelions stand at the edge of the mountain and there are two scaffoldings standing next to one another where SHANE and ZERA sit.

SHANE

Zera, why do you pilot this thing?

ZERA

I'm bonded to it.

SHANE

Bonded? To my father?

ZERA

To all people. It's how we met.

It's that simple.

SHANE

You're very strong, Zera.

ZERA

There's nothing else in my life.

SHANE

What do you mean?

ZERA stands.

ZERA

We need to launch. Goodbye,

Shane.

INT - COMMAND VEHICLE ATOP MOUNT SI – NIGHT.

SONYA calls out at the console of the command truck to ZERA and SHANE. She's accompanied by RACHEL. JEFF, VANCE and AUTUMN are at terminals.

SONYA

OK, Shane. Your operation is

simple. We will be pushing your

synchronization as hard as we can

so you can make the needed

adjustments. Every variable, from

muzzle climb to the earth's rotation

and gravitational field has been

accounted for but you will have to

wait for the capacitors. Keep the

target in your sites until you get

the green light.

SHANE & ZERA

Roger!

SONYA

Prime the weapon

JEFF

Roger.

JEFF flips on the switch. SOS of cooling units kicking in, electrical convergences.

AUTUMN

Discharge capacitance at 30%

VANCE

First safety released.

Monitors guage the convergence of the energy streams as Alpha unit acquires the target. SHANE dons a visor and shakily gets a view of the high flying angel. Alpha Unit cocks the barrel and sets the gun to fire mode.

AUTUMN

Discharge capacitance at 85%

VANCE

Second safety released.

Sparks fly near cooling units. Cables headed into the EVAs' weapon steam hot.

AUTUMN

Capacitance at 100%.

JEFF

All energy transferred to

the Alpha unit.

VANCE

Third safety released.

Weapon hot.

The angel charges up a blast.

JEFF

The angel is prepping another

blast.

SONYA
Shane, acquire and fire.

Don't hesitate.

JEFF

Incoming!

SHANE (V.O)

Fire in the hole!

SHANE squeezes the trigger and at that moment the angel fires a volley, and the two blasts deflect one another on their way and both blasts hit far behind their targets.

The blast jostles everyone but ZERA who stabilizes herself on the shield. SONYA and the others look to see that the angel is still there.

SONYA

Second shot! Hurry!

VANCE

Barrel cooling in action.

AUTUMN

Capacitors recharging.

JEFF
T-minus 25 seconds.

The angel is preparing a

second shot.

VANCE

We're not going to make it.

Omega unit stands up with shield ready and a hand cannon.

ZERA

Stay on target, Shane.

Omega unit leaps off the hill and runs. ZERA brings a cannon weapon to bear and fires. The shell hurtles through the air and misses its mark, but Zera got the desired result. A blast from the Angel targets her instead of the ALPHA UNIT which forces her to run, and the blast blazes like the fires of hell behind her, while balancing the unwieldy shield.

SHANE

Zera!

ZERA

Make the shot!

SHANE

Goddamn it.

SHANE attempts to reacquire the target while ZERA continues to run and gun as a diversion.

JEFF

15 seconds.

SONYA

Do it, Shane.

SHANE

Come on.

OMEGA unit stumbles and ZERA rights herself just in time to use the shield to block the beam. As ZERA holds strong under the heat SHANE focuses his attention to the angel.

The angel projects a shaft of blue light at ALPHA unit.

Inside the plug, SHANE is blinded for a moment. He then stands and walks out of the plug and onto a platform of crystalline. He walks towards the form of a tall, handsome man wearing a sheer cloth. ALPHA unit stands and begins to levitate.

SONYA

What's going on?

AUTUMN

The angel has connected some

kind of beam to Alpha unit.

VANCE

The wavelengths of the Angel

and Eva AT fields have resonated

with one another.

SONYA

What does that mean?

RACHEL

It's making contact.

SONYA

What?

ALPHA UNIT PLUG

SHANE walks towards the ANGEL figure.

SHANE

Who are you?

ANGEL

I am here to fulfill my destiny.

SHANE

What destiny?

ANGEL

You have been chosen by the Nephilim.

Come closer.

In the Base, the drill punches through the ceiling. WINTERS approaches the window to see the falling debris of the penetrating drill.

SHANE walks forward on the crystal surface and the ANGEL hovers above it.

SHANE

I was told to destroy you.

The angel traces his finger down the center of his chest.

ANGEL

Yes. Because only one of us can

have this.

A crimson core emerges from the chest of the ANGEL.

SHANE

What is it?

ANGEL

The fruit of life. You may consume

it or destroy it. Become or destroy

the power of God. What do you intend

to do?

SHANE approaches, and floats upward. SHANE puts his hand on the sphere.

Far away the beam relents on OMEGA unit. The shield falls to pieces and the unit is melted and fused into place. In great pain, ZERA still raises the cannon into the air and the angel charges its core once more.

SHANE sees energy building in angel and that his gaze is set in the distance. SHANE looks to see OMEGA unit making a last stand.

SHANE

No.

SHANE points a finger gun at ANGELs' core.

SHANE

Target in the center. Pull the trigger.

Back in the EVA he opens his eyes. The gun leaps into the air and into Alpha units hand and aligns perfectly. The shaft of light vanishes. SHANE sees he has the center of the Angel targeted. SHANE pulls the trigger. The blast flares out and punches right through the center of the angel. In his minds' eye, SHANE can see ANGEL, blasted through and ANGEL dissolves. The Angel above Morning Star Screams and tumbles out of the sky and crashing into the mountain side, it fires its' last beam that wipes across Omega unit, sending her reeling.

SHANE

Zera!

Immediately, Alpha unit drops from the sky, feet planted it starts running. Alpha unit ejects its' umbilical cable and runs to the Omega unit.

In the base, the drill shuts down. WINTERS looks up in both relief and disbelief. He looks back at EARL.

EARL

I told you. She would not fail me.

Alpha unit rips the back off of the injured Omega unit, and extracts its' entry plug. As the LCL vents from the plug, Alpha unit gently sets down the plug, before kneeling.

EARL (V.O.)

And though I doubted him, my

son was the right man for the job.

SHANE runs to ZERAs' plug and grasps at the emergency ejection handles. The superheated metal simmers on the gloves of SHANEs' plug suit, but still he torques the hatch open, and looks inside.

SHANE

Zera!

ZERA, knocked out, comes around.

ZERA

Yes?

SHANE tears up.

SHANE

Don't ever say that. Don't tell

me that you have nothing else

in your life. Don't tell me

goodbye when you go on a mission.

I don't know what I would have

done if we never saw each other

again after that. I can't handle

that much pressure.

SHANE weeps.

ZERA

Why are you crying?

I don't know what to do Shane.

I don't know how to act when

things are like this.

SHANE weakly smiles.

SHANE

If we can smile through this

we can smile through anything.

ZERA looks at him and recalls the smiling face of EARL. She smiles back at SHANE. Shane reaches out and ZERA takes his hand.

SOUNDTRACK – ALICE IN CHAINS – BROTHER

Credits roll as SHANE and ZERA walk back up the hill together. They make their way to a road, where SONYA and RACHEL pick them up. SHANE and ZERA fall asleep in the back seat, leaning on each other's heads.

INT – SHIPS' CABIN – DAY

AMANDA, a red-haired, very athletic and competitive EVA pilot from Germany, but a fluent English speaker rests her head on KEVINS' lap, looking up at him teasingly.

AMANDA

I hate you.

KEVIN

Why?

AMANDA

You left me in Germany to run

off to the Morning Star base.

KEVIN

It was only a month.

AMANDA

I missed you and you didn't care.

KEVIN

I cared, I was just busy.

AMANDA

I had to wait until we crossed

Panama to see you.

KEVIN

Well soon we'll both be in Morning

Star, and you'll get to meet the

other pilots.

AMANDA

Who needs them?

KEVIN

I hope you like Shane. I haven't

met him but he's really gifted.

AMANDA

I bet he's boring.

KEVIN

Forty percent synchronization

on his first try.

AMANDA sits up.

AMANDA
What the fuck?

KEVIN

He's killed off three angels

as well.

AMANDA

We don't have to talk about this.

KEVIN

I know. I just think you should

make friends with them.

AMANDA gets on all fours on the bunk.

AMANDA

Why are you being so boring?

Tell me a secret.

KEVIN

I don't have any secrets to tell.

AMANDA

Liar.

KEVIN

Well nothing that would interest

you.

AMANDA

Double liar.

KEVIN

Why are you so wound up today?

AMANDA leans her head on KEVINs' shoulder.

AMANDA
I'm just happy you're here and

we can spend time together.

See? Nothing could ruin this

moment.

The ships alarm goes off.

OVERHEAD (V.O.)

Attention all staff. Incoming

unidentified submersible object.

Depth 50 meters and rising.

Speed 40 knots. A blue pattern

has been detected.

AMANDA

An angel!

KEVIN

They'll have to call for

reinforcements.

AMANDA

No. I'm already here. Watch

this.

AMANDA leaves the cabin and KEVIN breathes a soft sigh of relief. KEVINs' Cell phone rings. He picks up and EARL is on the other end.

KEVIN

Hello?

EARL (V.O)
Do you have it?

KEVIN

Yes.

EARL (V.O)

Check it.

KEVIN opens a containment case which reveals a living embryo encased in a plastic block. Gages and meters show the life signs of the embryo.

KEVIN

The package is in working order.

EARL (V.O.)

Take the jump jet and get here.

KEVIN

There's an angel attacking the

fleet right now.

EARL (V.O)

That will make an excellent

diversion for your escape.

Let the second child and the

Beta unit handle the angel.

You just get moving.

EARL hangs up.

KEVIN

I won't be here to cheer you on,

Amanda. Good luck.

SOUNDTRACK: ABSOLUTE BEGINNER – HAMMERHART.

AMANDA dresses in her plug suit while KEVIN heads to the top deck. AMANDA moves to the cargo hold of the freighter, where the giant, quad eyed, red colored Beta Evangelion unit is moored in a pool of coolant. KEVIN has the tarp pulled from the helipad of the ship, and there is a vtol jet underneath. AMANDA enters the plug of the EVA, and starts it up. KEVIN boards the plane and takes off, and a moment later Beta Unit jumps out of the hold and takes to the air. KEVIN watches as the EVA lands on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. AMANDA plugs in the umbilical cable of the EVA and turns to see, barreling towards the ship the gigantic aquatic angel.

AMANDA
This is pilot Amanda Langley

Wellmont. Leave the angel to

me.

Beta unit expands its' AT field, which interacts with and neutralizes the Angels' AT field. AMANDA can see the core on the crest of the angel, which opens its mouth bearing sharp, enormous teeth. AMANDA leaps into the oncoming angel, passes it's closing jaws and plunges the progressive knife of the EVA into the angels' core. The angel shrieks and dives, taking the Beta unit below with it until Beta unit twists the knife, shatters the core and the Angel gives a dying underwater scream before plunging into the depths to lay across the submerged ruins of some forgotten coastal city. The beta unit is strung from its' umbilical cable up to the Aircraft carrier, and hanging there in the water, AMANDA looks at her slain foe with satisfaction.

AMANDA

Just you, wait, Shane. I'll

show you what I can do.
