Hello everyone! How are you? I'm bringing you the new chapter of the story, and one of the last parts of season 1. This season is coming to an end, and then season two will finally come! In the next chapter I'll tell you the name of next season.
First I wanted to say something, it's like a spoiler. As you know, in this episode it was shown how Stefan and Damon turned into vampires, so in this chapter will happen as well with Caroline. But I wrote her scenes alone, it'll just be shown her transition and the boys' ones will be summarised since it would be a longer chapter than it already is. But nothing changed that much.
The characters and the plot are property of Julie Plec and the tv show team, I own the characters I created and the changes I made in the story.
Normal POV
It had been a few days since Stefan had been locked up and Caroline went to visit him every day to see if he was getting any bettter, but it pained her to see how he was suffering. She was checking on him in that moment and didn't like to see that, from what she heard him babbling, he was hallucinating something about 1864. The heretic got away from the cell door as an idea occurred to her.
Stefan was babbling and had hallucinations about the night they became vampires that blended into the present and everything was confusing. He believed that he was seeing Katherine but it was Elena, who his brother brought out of the cell to where his sister was waiting for them.
-This is terrible. The poor guy is suffering so much- Caroline lamented, leaning against the wall.
-I know. It's hard to see him locked up like this- affirmed the human also feeling bad for her boyfriend.
-You had the idea and you were the one who locked him up- the vampire reminded them a bit seriously, pointing first to the blonde and then to the brunette, who turned around to see him.
-We thought of this together and you helped- the heretic replied irritated with her arms crossed.
-We couldn't have him biting people while the town is looking for vampires, now, could we?- Damon clarified as he approached them.
-It had nothing to do with you actually caring about him?- Elena hinted looking at him with suspicion.
-Your thing, not mine- he affirmed looking at Elena and left the basement, to which the blonde girl rolled her eyes.
-Leave him, it's obvious that he does. I'll go home to get some things and I'll be back- the heretic said and when she got a nod, she also left the basement and the mansion. After she returned home she searched for one of her grimoires while thinking about Stefan, rather about when they became vampires.
Caroline had used magic to escape from the house, she was worried and wanted to know if her brothers were fine. Through a window she believed that she saw them running through the woods so unconsciously she followed them. At one point she lost sight of them and began to shout nervously.
-Stefan! Damon!- she called out scared, afraid that something would happen to them. She was siphoning energy from her necklace to cast a spell when she heard gunshots and felt fear cross her body- Where are you?!- she screamed with tears in her eyes, but then she heard a voice behind her.
-Well, look what I found- said a man with a gun and she became defensive. From the way he was staggering, she could assume that he had had too much to drink.
-Stay away from me, I don't want any trouble- she warned seriously since she wasn't afraid to use magic to take care of herself.
-But I do not want to do anything. Nothing will happen if you behave yourself- he threatened trying to scare her.
-I tell you again to stay away from me now, I do not want to fight with you- she repeated angrily and in a hard way trying to go to look for her brothers, but the man came closer to her.
-What could you do? You are a woman, you do not know anything- mocked the older man and tried to take her arm but the siphoner extended one hand and the man flew away, he got up from the ground and backed away scared- You are a demon!- he shouted with fear believing that she was a vampire.
-I told you I did not want to fight, now leave me alone- she threatened annoyed and was about to turn around when the man shot her in the stomach. Before falling she twisted her wrist focused on the man and managed to snap his neck killing him. Caroline fell to the ground feeling weak, while looking at the stars she closed her eyes and sighed feeling everything was going black around her.
In the living room of the mansion Damon was staring at the object that Pearl had given him with some curiosity. He hadn't given it to his sister as he didn't think it would do much good, besides that she was still angry that he'd let Stefan suffer like that, and he was angry for the migraine she had caused him to confess the truth.
-Have you figured out what it is?- Elena asked entering the room behind the vampire's back.
-No. Whatever it is, it doesn't work- he talked without taking his eyes off the invention in his hands.
-Pearl didn't say anything else about it?- wanted to know the younger girl as she put her things in her bag.
-She thought she was stealing his vampire compass, but it was a watch. That Johnathan Gilbert was a crazy scientist. Have you talked to your uncle lately?- Damon inquired without turning around to look at her.
-I've avoided him, actually. I've been here for most nights- the girl reminded him, watching his back.
-So you'll be here again tonight?- the vampire assumed, curious about that detail.
-Is that a problem?- she questioned a little confused by his words.
-Yes, you're a nuisance. Even Caroline being controlling isn't that irritating- replied the older one turning around to look at her, but the younger girl took it with humor.
-Speaking of her, she said she'd come back later- she commented calm after his attempt to annoy her, maybe she was already getting used to his humor- See you later- she took her bag to leave.
After being left alone, Damon tried to get Stefan to drink animal blood he'd gotten for him so he could feed, but he refused since he claimed that he wasn't hungry and Damon left the cell after surrendering. He'd entered the living room when Alaric called to tell him that he'd gotten an address that was related to John and where they could find Isobel and decided to go check with him. But before that he spoke to Elena on the phone.
-He doesn't want to eat anything- he started to explain to the girl who was grabbing some clothes.
-He has to eat. What's his favourite?- inquired him a bit uncomfortably. But she continued at the oldest's insistence- The type of animal blood that he prefers- she clarified while she put some clothes away to go to the mansion.
-Eww, that's gross- joked the vampire when he heard her ask that.
-Joking doesn't help- affirmed the younger girl, although she was smiling because of his good humor.
-Helps me. Hurry up, I can't baby-sit tonight. I have things to do- he explained his plans.
-I would tell you "drop dead", but…- replied Elena with a joking tone.
-Ha ha. Stefan likes puppy blood. Cute little puppies with furry ears. That's his favourite- added Damon smirking, leaving her frozen in place for a moment, and ended the call. Then he texted Caroline to go back to look after Stefan.
Caroline woke up with a start with a sharp intake of breath, upon looking around she saw that she was in the woods and it was still dark. The girl was thinking what she was doing there when she remembered the accident and noticed on her stomach a blood stain, but upon touching it she didn't seem to be wounded.
-What? But, but the gunshot and the blood, what was…- she started to mumble without understanding anything and then she got it- Oh my God. Am I in transition? But what do I do?- she tried to calm down and began to do some breathing exercises- Stay calm Caroline. The best thing to do would be to go home to use a spell and speak to grandma, she will help me to know what to do- she said to herself to relax. She got up and started to walk looking for where to go when she remembered something.
-Oh, I should see if I have my abilities during transition- she whispered looking around for something useful and her eyes fell on a plant. She approached it and managed to desiccate it after absorbing energy- I can still do magic- she let out into the air and resumed her walk.
When she arrived home she was lucky to find the servants sleeping, and she put to sleep those she found awake with some magic. She went into her bedroom and took one of her grimoires, put it on her desk and started to read it. After finding the spell she wanted she recited it while closing her eyes, and when she opened them she saw Emma sitting on her bed.
-Hello little butterfly, I suppose that you want to speak to me because you have doubts about what to do with the transition, and to know what the family thinks- guessed the eldest when she saw her granddaughter distressed.
-Of course, I have questions and I hope to have answers. And to know what all of them think about this. But first I want to know why my head is starting to hurt a little- she clarified serious sitting down next to her as she began to have strange sensations in her body.
-All right, I will answer everything. And the headache will grow little by little since your body wants you to drink blood and complete the transition- she explained, but then she continued talking- And we have something to tell you- she revealed surprising Caroline who stared at her doubtfully because of her seriousness.
Elena had gone to check on Stefan to try to convince him to drink the blood that Damon had brought him, but she only heard Stefan say that after everything he had done he didn't want to survive anymore. Elena tried to talk to Damon about it, but the oldest man assured her that it would all be over when he fed. He thought that his brother was being dramatic and left the house after telling her to watch out for the vampire and stay away from him.
After driving for a few hours until they got to Grove Hill, Damon and Alaric reached a house that looked like it wasn't very big. Verifying that thaty was the address, they got out of the car to check it out.
-I think this is the one. The records show that it was paid 3 months in advance- commented Alaric as they walked to the door of the place and looked around.
-It gets tricky in here. I may or may not be able to get in- clarified Damon while ringing the doorbell.
-Yeah, how does that work? You always have to be invited?- he inquired, looking at him curiously.
-By the owner or the person of entitlement. Short-term rentals and hotels are gray areas. You gotta see what happens- explained the vampire, looking at the door and going over to open it.
-Could we not kill anyone, please?- asked the human seeing how he tried to enter.
-You just brought me along for my company?- he mockingly replied as he managed to open the door and let Alaric in.
-It doesn't look like anyone's home- assumed the human as he entered and saw everything was dark while the older man looked at the entrance frame hoping to enter.
-Yeah, I got in. No permanent resident- the vampire discovered as he managed to enter as well. They separated to inspect the house, Damon went to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator to see blood bags- Uh, Ric, we have company- he told the younger one who was in the living room. But out of nowhere a vampire jumped on him, who tried to attack him until Damon grabbed the vampire and threw him against the floor- Boys, boys, that's enough. I know you- he affirmed when he saw the vampire.
-Damon?- asked the young man staring at him as he stood in front of him.
-Your name's Henry. You were in the tomb- the younger man remembered since he got a good look at his face. While Alaric was behind Damon watching the exchange between the vampires.
-Yes, sir. What are you doing here?- Henry questioned, glancing between the vampire and the human.
On her side, Caroline arrived at the mansion carrying a bag and went to the door to ring the bell since she had forgotten her key, after a few seconds she was greeted by Elena.
-Hello Elena, how is Stefan?- asked the older girl walking to the kitchen to get some water and then she went to the library, followed by the girl who was telling her about Stefan.
-Well, he doesn't want to drink anything. He also said that after everything that happened to him he didn't want to go on living. Damon thinks he's being dramatic and said he had to feed to get better- she said as she watched her take out from her bag a medium sized light colored book and some jars- Sorry, but what is all that?- she enquired, standing next to her in front of a table.
-The problem is that Stefan is delirious from hunger. With these herbs and the grimoire I'll make a remedy to help him to relax his mind and stop hallucinating- she explained while opening the book to a page. After reading it she mixed some herbs in the water, closed her eyes with her hands over the glass and began to murmur something. Elena watched the water swirl around until it turned orange.
-Wow, cool. And how do you know that he's delirious?- the younger girl continued with her doubts.
-I heard him mumbling something of when we became vampires. So I thought that I'd do something so he gets a break from the drama, he doesn't need it for now- she insinuated, putting her things in her bag.
-Sounds like it was difficult, were bad your experiences upon turning?- she inquired with curiosity, since she only knew part of what had happened to them.
-I can't speak for their experience because I didn't live it, but mine wasn't very nice. Stefan told you when we turned, didn't he?- Caroline guessed and continued as she nodded- That night everything was in chaos and I had to stay in my bedroom because of my father, but me being a siphoner and very worried about my brothers, I escaped and followed them to the woods. Although at one point I lost them- she began to tell her while she approached a table to pour herself a drink.
-You escaped to the woods to protect them? In spite of all the chaos? And what happened in there?- she continued with her questions interested in the story, while sitting down in an armchair.
-Yeah, I only cared about them. When I lost them, I heard some gunshots that terrified me as I instantly thought in the worse. Then a drunk man approached me with a bit dubious intentions- she told her in an insinuating tone so that she would understand what she was referring to, and the girl was surprised.
-Really? The man could do something? Did he hurt you?- Elena interrogated worriedly.
-He tried to take my arm saying that since I was a woman I couldn't do anything to him, which made it more satisfying to push him with magic and scare him. But he shot me in the stomach and killed me- she kept on with her story and smirked a little at the mention of pushing him.
-Wait, one of the last things you heard was gunshots? That means you…- Elena started to say astonished when she noticed that detail, but the older girl interrupted her.
-Exactly. That means that I died thinking that my brothers might have died and I couldn't protect them. Here, try to make Stefan drink it while I look for blood- she finished with a bitter tone, giving her the potion to go to the basement as she thought about that night.
Caroline was walking in front of Emma still processing everything that she had told her. She was exchanging some glances between her grandma, who was watching her silently waiting for her to speak, and her window in which the moon and stars were still visible.
-Let me see if I understood it. You and our ancestors cast a spell to find out what would happen tonight if I complete the transition, but all you saw was that good things would happen for us?- the younger girl repeated after stopping walking and standing in front of her.
-Exactly. We were worried about you knowing that you had been killed and would wake up at some point, so we tried to do that to find out what would happen- she explained to her that part calmly again as she stood up. She was very hurt by what had happened to her grandchilden that night, and now she hoped that the three of them would agree to survive.
-I guess you want me to drink blood- guessed the blonde girl, and she was right since she saw her nod- I know that no one wanted me to turn, much less in this way, but I think that I need some time before deciding something so important- she expressed doubtful of what to do, she felt her headache getting worse and her body began to ache.
-We know it is a difficult decision since you would lose your abilities, but we want you to live honey. You are only 17, you have barely lived, maybe this is your chance to do it. But you would have to leave as they are hunting vampires- reminded her Emma, hoping that she would accept.
-First I want to know what actually happened to Damon and Stefan, are they alive?- asked the siphoner with a trembling voice hoping that her brothers were alive and lost in the woods. After a few moments of hesitation, the older woman agreed to tell her the truth.
-They were killed, they tried to save Katherine but someone killed them. We do not exactly know what occurred to them, but we believe that she gave them vampire blood- confessed the witch, omitting that their father had killed them. She was furious that her son had fallen so low for his obsession with the reputation. Caroline's eyes filled with tears.
-They died and now they might be vampires? But it's not safe at all? This is my fault, it is my fault- she started to mumble crying brokenly. Emma let her cry knowing that nothing that she could say would be able to comfort her- Wait, what if they don't want to complete the transition and decide to die as humans?- she inquired between tears. She remained silent for a few seconds looking thoughtfully at the window and then she stared at her grandma- I think that I have decided- she declared seriously.
Damon and Alaric were still in the Grove Hill house speaking with Henry, who had no idea what they were doing there, and they were determined to take advantage of that.
-So, how do you know John Gilbert?- Henry asked Damon, pouring the blood from one of his bags into a glass to give Damon who was sitting on a couch.
-I've known him for years, he's a good friend. How do you know him?- he lied, accepting the glass.
-I met him right after I came out of the tomb, he's helped me- he said, smiling slightly.
-Helped you how?- interjected Alaric standing close to him, watching the vampires chatting.
-Adapting. It's a new world. Cars, computers, internet dating. There's so much to learn. He helped me get this place- explained the older vampire as he walked into the living room to approach the refrigerator for another blood bag.
-And do you live here alone? Or is there someone else here?- the human interrogated him a little harshly, which confused him so he stared at Damon waiting for him to explain that part.
-That's my friend's passive-aggressive way of asking you if you know a, a woman named Isobel- the younger one clarified calmly while he glanced at the human.
-No, I don't know an Isobel. I know John, he's my only friend. He has taught me a lot, how to use the microwave, how to wash clothes- he told them as he poured the blood.
-What else do you do for him?- the youngest man continued with his questions without taking his eyes off him.
-I help him keep an eye on things, with the others- confessed the vampire while standing between them.
-The others?- inquired Damon so he would explain him who he was referring to.
-From the tomb. They are still furious with the founding families for trying to burn them alive. I'm cool, but the ones from the tomb want revenge- he revealed looking between them, surprising them with that information.
-What does John want with them?- Alaric questioned after glancing at Damon.
-He's just keeping an eye on them, you know, trying to keep them out of trouble- clarified Henry, watching him for a moment.
-That's John, wanting to do the right thing- Damon commented, smirking a little. Then Henry's phone rang and he told them that it was John, making Damon get up of his seat instantly with the intention of taking it so that he wouldn't answer the call.
Damon pretended that he wanted to talk to the Gilbert man so that he wouldn't answer, managing to convince Henry who gave him the phone instantly. Within seconds he began to suspect that his guests might not be being honest with him, so he tried to attack Alaric, but Damon grabbed him before he could do anything and the human drove a stake through his heart, killing him.
Later, Elena went down to the basement to check on Stefan and to convince him to drink blood, but when he refused she tried to get him to drink Caroline's potion, which the guy ended up throwing away. She sat with him to try to get him to talk to her, and got him to tell her that he shouldn't have completed the transition, and told him what had happened with Damon and him that night.
-So, your father was the one who killed both you and Damon for saving Katherine, and he wanted to make Caroline his only child?- the brunette asked surprised by the actions of the man.
-Yes, I found out all of it when I went to say goodbye to him since neither of us wanted to be a vampire, so we weren't gonna complete the transition- he told her regretfully about the past.
-But you were gonna leave your sister alone with your father? If you hadn't turned, then she would have been alone forever. Perhaps feeling guilty that she couldn't save either of you- she hinted at the decision they'd made years before.
-Caroline told you how she became a vampire right?- the vampire guessed and he saw her nod- At the time we didn't think about her, we just thought that we couldn't go through with the transition. Though we felt bad for her- he clarified and looked up- How can you even look at me?- he questioned after telling her his story.
-You need to be able to talk of these things Stefan, I need to hear them. Come upstairs, we can talk of it more and we'll keep talking as long as you need. And Caroline is upstairs if that makes you feel better- the younger girl assured trying to convince him to go upstairs.
-Are you sure I'm ready?- he asked doubtful about her answer. Then Elena took out from her pocket the daylight ring of the older guy and showed it to him.
-When you feel the same way, I'll be upstairs- she affirmed and got up leaving the ring next to him, and left the basement to return to the living room. There she found the heretic who was looking at her phone- Bad news Caroline, Stefan threw away your remedy- she told her sitting down on a couch, and the girl turned to look at her.
-What? Stefan is lucky to have a half-witch sister who cares about him- replied the older girl taking from the table a bottle with the orange liquid from before- There you have more. I made more in case of emergencies early- she clarified with a resigned tone glancing at the bottle.
-You didn't finish telling me about your transition. What happened when you woke up?- she wanted to know when she saw how she was taking care of her older brother and what he had almost done with Damon.
-I woke up alone in the middle of the woods, I realised that I was in transition and I went to my house. Everyone was sleeping so I packed my things and took my horse to escape to the neighboring town. There I made a man fall asleep and I drank of his blood turning into a vampire, and then I found out I could still do magic- she told her putting her phone away.
-Wow, you went through all the process alone. But you didn't feel bad about it? Just deciding to drink the blood and abandon your whole life?- the younger girl inquired, while wanting to understand her.
-It wasn't just drinking blood. I had no choice, it was either to die without even having lived or to live a new life being free as I wished. It hurt to leave my life and part of me behind, but I wanted to live on my own and discover my potential. Being a vampire gave me the freedom I wanted- Caroline explained calmly so she'd understand her point of view.
-It sure was hard to be a woman back then, just following the orders or not being able to choose to live the way you wanted. Sounds like it was the best choice for you. But, how did you take that Stefan and Damon almost didn't complete the transition?- continued the girl, interested in the subject.
-I completed the transition first, I did it in the same night I woke up while they completed it the next evening. Let's just say that I got a bit angry since they had decided to die without caring about anything, they only cared about not being able to go on without Katherine. It didn't surprise me much though- revealed the heretic, puzzling the brunette.
-Wait, you weren't surprised that they wanted to die together?- she questioned her without understanding what she was referring to.
-No, because knowing them it didn't sound so crazy. They were the best of friends and they were everything for each other. Damon got obsessed with Katherine and wanted to die for losing her, but I believe that if he'd had another reason, Stefan would have decided to die anyway. No matter how much they say they hate each other, they can't live without each other. They're nothing without the other- she admitted, but Elena thought she sensed a bitter tone there.
-So, they were always good friends and you got angry as they almost abandoned you, but it was something that didn't surprise you?- the brunette girl repeated to know if she had understood everything.
-Yes, I got angry since it seemed they didn't care about me and chose Katherine over me. Later the anger went away because we were vampires, but that didn't stop me from telling them that at least I did think of them before I chose- she replied a bit irritated, standing up and taking her bag.
-Wait, you're leaving? You're not going to wait for Damon to come back?- Elena asked still sitting down.
-I'll just go home and drop these things off and come back. Maybe when Damon comes back, I'll go to my house to rest for a while- promised Caroline to relax and waved before going out of the house.
Damon was dealing with emptying Henry's blood bags while Alaric checked the place. As he finished the human didn't seem well and was talking about giving up on finding Isobel once and for all, that he no longer wanted to know why or when she'd decided to leave her home and become a vampire, and believed it was time for him to move on. After trying to joke with him just to relax him, Damon tried to talk about Isobel, but Alaric repeated that he no longer wanted to talk about her and move on, which was a very good thing.
After saying goodbye to Alaric, Damon went back to the mansion and found Elena alone sitting with her legs up on the couch while holding a diary in her lap.
-Ugh, God. You're still here?- the older man greeted entering and walking towards her.
-Were you expecting someone else?- she asked, barely looking up from her diary.
-I thought you were having a girls' night with Caroline. Where's the blonde? She didn't fulfill her babysitting duties?- enquired the vampire as he lifted Elena's legs a little to sit down next to her and put her legs over his lap in a friendly way.
-Caroline stayed here until a while ago. She brought her grimoire and made a remedy for Stefan that he refused, and she went to leave her things- the younger girl told him without taking her eyes off her diary- And? How was the errand?- she asked him, interested in his "adventure" with Alaric.
-Futile. Although I think that I witnessed the teacher having an existential crisis. Has Stefan eaten yet?- inquired the older man, interested in what had happened to his brother during those hours.
-I thought you didn't care- the human reminded him mockingly as she looked at him.
-I asked it out of curiosity- he clarified, but inwardly he really wanted to know how he was doing.
-I think he's getting there. But he has a lot of guilt to deal with. And it doesn't help that you've spent the last 145 years punishing him for Katherine getting caught- Elena recriminated in a calm tone so he would understand. Upon hearing her, Damon's smile faded.
-This is my fault now?- he questioned starting to get irritated by the girl's words.
-No, it's no one's fault Damon, I'm just saying that you're not an innocent. You have made it your life's mission to make him miserable- she explained looking at him to relax him, but he stood up.
-I'm gonna ask you something. During all this introspection and cleansing of the demons of Stefan's past, were you able to hear the rest of the story?- the vampire interrogated her, annoyed by how the brunette was accusing him, and perhaps without knowing what had actually happened.
-He said there was more- she affirmed, sitting up straight and staring at him interested in what he said.
-Yes, that's an understatement- he sentenced seriously and turned to leave when Elena stood up.
-Damon, Damon. Tell me- Elena asked while she walked up to him and get to him, Damon stared at her thoughtfully for a few moments and nodded, going to get himself a drink.
He explained that he didn't want to complete the transition if Katherine was dead, but that night out of nowhere his brother had shown up with a young girl as a "gift" for him and he insisted that he drank her blood to become a vampire as well since he couldn't let him die. So when his brother bit the girl's neck to offer him blood, he couldn't resist the temptation and ended up completing the transition after Stefan's insistence.
-The moment that Stefan tasted human blood, he became a different person. I suppose I should thank him, I've had fun- Damon commented mockingly after sipping his drink.
-Oh my God, he said he wanted to die. That's why he doesn't feed, now I understand why but..- said Elena surprised for discovering the truth about what happened that night.
-It's his choice. If he's stupid enough to make it, so be it- he replied pretending not to care about what his brother did, while he stopped looking at the brunette girl.
-That's not what Caroline thought when she ran off to save you two. She only thought that she wanted to save her brothers because she loved them- she sentenced annoyed and puzzled by his attitude.
-So she told you how she was turned, it must have been a nice story about how strong she was and how hard it was for her to become a heretic. But the difference between her and me is that she's a little girl kinda emotional while I'm normal- the vampire argued as he thought about how the blonde girl had been turned and the anger that he had to endure on her part.
-Well, she was brave to do all that alone even though she lost you guys. And don't do that, don't pretend you don't care- replied the younger girl angry at his answer. Then she noticed a detail and suddenly ran away, confusing the older one.
-Where are you going?- asked Damon puzzled when he saw her leaving without finishing their conversation.
Elena ran down to Stefan's cell worried about him, that became even bigger when she saw the door open and that there was no trace of the vampire. The brunette got in the room and looked around, but on the bed in there she found Stefan's daylight ring, so she took it and went out to find him. On her way out, she took her phone and sent a message.
Stefan had returned to the place where he'd made Damon complete the transition. For the hallucinations, he remembered how the older one commented that it felt good to be a vampire, and he said that now they could explore the world together, and maybe even go for their sister. But Damon replied that they would be together for all eternity, and he would make sure to turn that eternity into misery to then leave him alone there. Then he remembered how Emily Bennett had followed him and told him that, for his pure heart, vampirism would be a curse for him.
Stefan was still thinking when Elena arrived with his daylight ring. Elena insisted that he'd decided to be a good person, rather than let the blood turn him evil. The vampire revealed that he was very hurt by the damage he had caused in his life and he wanted to fight the cravings, besides that he was sorry for what he'd done, and he was afraid of hurting her. Elena insisted that she trusted him and gave him his ring so he could choose to die by the sun or use the ring and fight to survive. After thinking for a while, Stefan put on the ring and kissed her.
Stefan and Elena had returned to the mansion when they saw a car and a person getting out of it, the person turned around and they saw it was Caroline, who was looking at them with her arms crossed.
-Hey Stefan, it seems that Elena put common sense in your head- she greeted him without moving.
-Caroline? What are you doing here? I thought that you had left- he wanted to know without understanding what she was doing there.
-Elena told me about the madness you might be about to make. So I came to see how you were doing, and know what the hell you were thinking when you ran away- she clarified seriously and approached him.
-I think maybe I should go inside and let you two talk. Thanks for helping me today- Elena thanked the blonde girl and was about to let go of her boyfriend when the girl spoke.
-Don't worry Elena, I didn't mind babysitting with you, see you. Let me guess Stefan, you felt guilty for everything you've done, right?- the heretic guessed looking at her brother calmly after the brunette girl went to wait for them at the door.
-Yes. You know that I feel bad for everything I've done, especially for what happened with Damon in 1864. I didn't know what to do so I just acted without thinking about anything- excused the older guy staring at the blonde and feeling bad for having worried both her and Elena.
-And you didn't think of talking about it with me at least? In case that you forgot, I've been a vampire as long as you, I'm not a harmless baby vampire who's never killed anyone- the girl reminded him irritated. She understood how he felt since she had felt the same way at first, but the problem was that he was still stuck in that phase and he needed to learn to control the guilt.
-I know I could talk to you Care, and I don't know why I didn't- Stefan clarified running his hands over his face- Do you feel guilty about what you do?- he asked curiously.
-Sometimes I do, so I try to think I had reasons to do it, like protecting us. But sometimes I think that the person deserved it, that makes me feel almost no guilt- she explained as she thought about what she could say so he would understand her point.
-Sometimes you don't feel guilt because the person deserves it? When they do?- inquired the vampire interested in the heretic's explanation, hoping that she would tell him more about it. After watching him for a few moments, the girl sighed and agreed to give him a small example.
-In the 60s, I was living in Florida when I discovered that some witches wanted to hurt me by hurting both you and Damon, so after torturing them I killed them. And I didn't feel guilty for doing it- confessed the blonde girl a little doubtful about how the guy was going to take what she had told him.
-What? I didn't know that. How many times did something like it happen and you didn't tell us?- he questioned, puzzled by what she had revealed to him. He knew that she'd done impulsive things for the two of them, but now he wondered how many things like that they didn't know had happened.
-Well, maybe someday I'll tell you- she smiled a bit nervously, giving him to understand that there had been several times, but she didn't give him time to talk- What matters is that you get better and that you become you once again. Promise you'll try- she asked, getting serious again.
-I promise, I want to do it- promised the older guy and they hugged. After a while they got apart and Stefan glanced at the house- I think I should go inside, I'd like to talk to Damon. You know, about what happened between us- he commented calmer than before while she nodded.
-Sure. I might come back tomorrow to check on you two. Take care, okay?- the heretic said goodbye smiling again, and after receiving a nod she got into her car and drove off. Stefan stood watching where his sister went and he walked to the door to enter with Elena. They walked holding hands to the library, finding Damon sitting on the couch.
-Little boy lost- Damon greeted barely looking up from the Gilbert object in his hands, which he was still checking, hoping to find out what it was.
-I'll be upstairs, okay?- Elena told her boyfriend, who nodded and he let go of her hand- Good night Damon- she said goodbye to the older vampire, glancing at him for a moment and then left. Damon put the object on the table next to him, then took a glass with a drink and took a sip.
-Thank you- Stefan said suddenly, moving a little closer to his brother.
-No Stefan, thank you. You're back on Bambi blood, and I'm the big badass brother again. All is right in the world- he affirmed ironically as he looked at the other one, who sat down next to him.
-I mean it. Thank you for… helping her take care of me- he thanked hm sincerely for what his brother had done. He knew deep down Damon cared for him, in his own crazy way.
-You suffer too much. Everything that happens is not your fault. My actions, what I do, it's not your fault, I own them. They belong to me. You are not allowed to feel my guilt- replied the vampire with irritation for what the guy was doing. However, a really low voice in his mind told him that a part of Stefan's attitude was his fault for everything that he had said and done during their lives.
-Do you feel guilt?- the younger vampire asked as he processed what he had told him.
-If I wanted to, it's there- he said and drank a sip. When Damon remained silent without seeing him for a few seconds, Stefan got up to leave, but the older man continued talking- Emily waited till after I turned to tell me that she'd been able to protect Katherine with her spell. She didn't want me to know about the tomb. She thought that it would impact my decision- he revealed in a soothing voice.
-She didn't want either of us to turn. She said that it was a curse- commented the younger guy still staring at him, inwardly surprised he hadn't told him that.
-Witches, judgy little thing- he murmured, drinking another sip of his drink. He had told his brother something small and just wanted him to put the subject of what he had done aside.
-Why didn't you tell me?- Stefan questioned, more curious than angry at the revelation of the vampire, even though he already knew that he had discovered the girl was alive.
-Because I didn't want you to know. I hated you, I still do- Damon clarified glaring at him as he said that, he believed that had hurt the other one since he'd lowered his gaze lightly- But not because you forced me to turn- he confessed believing that it was time for him to know.
-Then why?- he inquired surprised, without understanding what he had done to his brother to make him hate him for so long, he wanted to know what his mistake with him had been. Damon stared at the other vampire while he stood up from the couch and got near him.
-Because she turned you. And it had to be me Stefan- he revealed angry as he remembered that fact from his past and walked past him, stopping briefly next to him to add a detail- No one else- he finished with bitterness in his voice and went back to his bedroom leaving his brother alone in the library. Stefan was a bit hurt and puzzled by what he'd discovered that night, unable to believe that this was the truth behind the older's hatred.
Caroline went back to her house and took a shower. She took a blood bag to her bedroom and kept thinking about when she had finally completed the transition, which was when she left town and her old life without looking back. Which was when her life also began.
After saying goodbye to her grandma, Caroline grabbed some suitcases and looked around to choose what to take with her. She took some of her dresses, her most valuable books, a box with important papers, the ingredients she had there and all of her grimoires which luckily weren't many, among other things she wanted to take with her since she had no idea when she would be back.
She checked that she was taking what she needed for the last time and after putting on her black cloak she quietly left carrying the suitcases. She took her horse and a saddle from her father and left. What felt like hours later, though it was not dawn yet, she arrived to the neighboring town and after looking around she got off her horse and approached a man on an empty path.
-Excuse me Sir, could you help me with something?- she asked him upon seeing that he was alone and seemed harmless. Caroline felt a headache and her body ached, besides that her gums had started to hurt a little. The young man turned to see her and got closer to her.
-Of course Miss, what can I do for you?- he asked in a friendly way, which made her a little uncomfortable because of what she was going to do to him. Besides, it seemed to her that he spoke loudly, which was worse for her worsening headache, although that would end soon.
-Just relax- answered Caroline confusing him and snapped her fingers- Somnus- she recited, which made him fall asleep. She crouched down next to him and took his hand to cut his palm with the knife that she had taken from Damon. Seeing the blood she felt something strange run through her body, so she took a deep breath to relax. After psyching herself up, she brought the hand to her mouth and drank the blood, becoming a vampire. A few moments later she pulled away and wiped it off with her handkerchief.
-Thank you for helping me in the first part of the plan: becoming a vampire- she thanked as if she was speaking to him- I will miss practising magic though, like moving something with my mind- she added melancholic at the thought of having lost that part of her being, and pretended to float the handkerchief at feeling sad, but was startled to see that it had worked.
-What? I'm a vampire and I can do magic? But it is impossible- she wondered surprised and tried to levitate it again, which she was able to do and it confirmed her doubts- Now I am a hybrid of witch and vampire- she affirmed processing what she had discovered glancing at the man.
-Now I must cure you and leave you here so I can begin with the second part of the plan: go to a small town in Georgia- she revealed to the fainted young man and the blonde girl saw that the sky was dark with light reflections, implying that very soon it would be dawn. As she was watching the sky, Caroline believed that this was the end of a phase and also the beginning of her new life.
That's all for now! I hope that you enjoyed the chapter. It took some time to change and edit, especially because I wasn't fully comfortable with some parts at first, even I lost count of how many times I changed it, but it was worth it since I like it.
A part of me felt bad for what I wrote for Caroline's past and her reaction to Stefan' and Damon's death, but that's part of who she's always been, besides that in some way her brothers were everything she had left apart from her magic. Also, I think that all three of them needed some time alone, especially Caroline who was dealing with finding out she was an impossible hybrid. Hope that you understood it, thank you so much for reading and liking the story, I'm very glad it's good.
