Chapter 14

They moved through the narrow path between two tall cliffs. It is a long path and very hard to get through in certain areas even for the dwarves and Tony who was a petite woman. The pathway opened up into a huge open area. Down below was a valley of Rivendell.

"The Valley of Imraldis. In the Common Tongue, it's known by another name." Gandalf said, looking down at the valley.

"Rivendell." Bilbo said softly, looking at it in awe. He had never seen such a beautiful place in his life.

"Here lies the last Homely House east of the sea."

Tony looked on in awe. She had seen so many places while traveling with the company, but this had to be the most beautiful place that she had seen in a long while.

"This was your plan all along, to seek refuge with our enemy." Thorin said in a low voice looking over at Gandalf with narrowed eyes.

"You have no enemies here, Thorin Oakenshield. The only ill-will to be found in this valley is that which you bring yourself."

"You think the Elves will give our quest their blessing? They will try to stop us."

"Of course they will. But we have questions that need to be answered. If we are to be successful, this will need to be handled with tact and respect and no small degree of charm. Which is why you will leave the talking to me."

They walked across the bridge and entered Rivendell.

Bilbo looked around in awe as the dwarves looked around in unease.

Tony bit her lip softly wondering why the dwarves wouldn't feel welcome in such a place. She didn't think that the elves of Rivendell would hurt them. Perhaps they would be able to feel at ease as the time went on.

A dark-haired elf walked down a flight of stairs towards them. "Mithrandir."

Gandalf smiled as he saw him. "Ah, Lindir!"

Tony blinked a few times in shock. She couldn't believe how tall the elf was. Lithe and agile forms and it made her even feel tiny. She shrunk back against the dwarves feeling awkward.

Throin looked over at Tony seeing her shrinking back against the company. He looked over at Dwalin and whispered to him.

"Lastannem i athrannedh i Vruinen."

"I must speak with Lord Elrond." Gandalf explained to Lindir in hopes that he would be able to talk to his old friend.

Lindir blinked a few times in concern. "My lord Elrond is not here."

Gandalf's lips went together in a thin line. Where was he? "Not here? Where is he?"

Elvish horns were heard alerting Rivendell that they were returning home.

"Ifridî bekâr!" Thorin shouted to them. "Hold ranks!" He pushed Tony behind him.

Tony gasped softly gripping onto Thorin's coat tightly in her hands. She lowered her head slightly, her heart ramming against her chest in a painful way.

The dwarves bunched around keeping Bilbo and Tony in the middle.

Bilbo looked over at Tony seeing the worried look upon her face as she kept her head low. Perhaps it was the loud noise that made her scared or something else. He didn't know, but it was rather concerning.

One elf separated himself from the others. "Gandalf."

Gandalf bowed his head gracefully in greeting towards him. "Lord Elrond. Mellonnen! Mo evínedh?"

"Farannem 'lamhoth i udul o charad. Dagannem rim na Iant Vedui." He said as he dismounted his horse. He then hugged Gandalf. "Strange for Orcs to come so close to our borders. Something, or someone, has drawn them near." He held up the orc sword showing it to everyone before handing it to Lindir.

"Ah, that may have been us."

Tony released Thorin's coat as Thorin stepped forward.

Elrond looked at him with recognition upon his face. "Welcome Thorin, son of Thrain."

Throin swallowed the lump in his throat looking up at Elrond. He didn't like this in the least bit. He didn't know this elf. "I do not believe we have met." He said squaring his shoulders trying his best to not look back at Tony who was well protected within the middle of the company.

"You have your grandfather's bearing. I knew Thror when he ruled under the Mountain." Elrond said looking at Thorin.

"Indeed; he made no mention of you."

Elrond turned and began to speak to a few of the elves that were around. "Nartho i noer, toltho i viruvor. Boe i annam vann a nethail vin."

"What is he saying? Does he offer us insults?" Gloin snapped moving forward in a huff.

Tony looked up to Gandalf seeing the look upon his face. She could tell that he was getting irritated with the dwarves thinking the worst of the elves that are trying to help them the best that they can.

"No, master Gloin, he's offering you food." Gandalf said, looking at the dwarves.

Tony's cheeks flushed as her stomach rumbled in hunger. "Oh… food would be wonderful." She said softly as she looked down knowing that the dwarves had heard her stomach growling at her.

"Ah well, in that case, lead on." Gloin said, looking up at them.

Lord Elrond waved his hand to an elleth. "Take the young lady for a bath and some clothes."

The elleth bowed her head gesturing for Tony to follow her.

Thorin grabbed Tony's arm as she moved forward.

"Thorin…" She said looking at him with her bright green eyes.

"I do not trust them…"

"Thorin, it's just a warm bath and clothing." She said softly, giving him a small smile. "I don't think that they would hurt me." She patted his hand softly with her small hand.

Thorin took a sharp breath allowing her to go and get a nice bath and new clothes. He could only hope that she would keep an eye out for anything odd.
