Ocean: Day…
The Zhu Li battleship was on its way to the South Pole. Within a cabin, Kya used Waterbending to heal a motionless Jinora.
Sasuke silently peeked into the room. "Jinora…"
He clenched his fist firmly before striding away with absolute purpose.
Once he left, Sakura came out from behind a corner. "Sasuke's genuinely more affected by what's happened to Jinora than anything involving me."
She could remember back to the Chunin Exams, In the Forest of Death. She'd come to learn the emotions displayed then, while on her behalf, were amped by the Curse Mark. Here, she knew Sasuke now had unprecedented control over it, yet he displayed emotions on par with then.
Sakura approached the door and stared at it. "It's clear he cares more about her than me. All this time I've been an obstacle." She firmed up her gaze. "Well, not anymore. I will help Sasuke save Jinora and the world."
Outside the ship, Bumi was playing his flute while laying against Oogi. Tenzin stood on the deck with his arms crossed and a stern expression as he watched Korra utilize Airbending to attack a dummy.
"She is determined." Kiba noted.
"You should see Sasuke." Neji pointed out. "He's eager to have it out with Unalaq over what he's done."
"It's clear they won't let Unalaq win this time." Shikamaru said.
Mako stood by, watching Korra train, when his brother arrived wearing a shiny purple coat and eating a slice of pie. "What's up with the coat, and where did you get the pie?"
"It's a Varrick ship." Bolin replied. "You never know what you'll find. Heck, there's a whole level filled with funhouse mirrors." He sighed. "Man, I miss that guy. He really knew how to make a long trip interesting."
Mako rolled his eyes. "Right…"
"So, still thinking what you decided about romantic relationships was the right course?" Bolin asked, a bit concerned.
"I think what we all decided and agreed to was for the best." Mako smiled. "For me personally, I know there are aspects of myself I got to work on before I decide to date anyone. Despite how things turned out with Asami and Korra, I'm grateful for the time we had together."
Later…
Sasuke eventually walked onto the deck with Kya and Sakura joining everyone not long after.
"As soon as we reach the Southern Water Tribe, we'll blast through the blockade at the main portal." Tenzin informed. "Then, we'll rendezvous with Tonraq and his troops, crash through the defenses around the portal, and enter the Spirit World."
"Woah!" Kya was surprised. "Since when does my little brother want to blast or crash through anything?"
"I'll do whatever it takes to save my daughter." Tenzin declared fiercely.
"Tenzin, your plan won't work if we're just going to rush in and destroy everything in our path." Kakashi reasoned. "We need to be smart about this."
"As much as I want to rush in there and get my hands on Unalaq, Kakashi is right." Sasuke sighed. "We can't let absolute aggression overcome us; otherwise, he wins."
This didn't mean Sasuke wasn't angry with Unalaq, clearly. It did mean he would work to channel his anger correctly rather than letting it rule him at this critical juncture. Would this hold up when the time came? The Uchiha didn't know.
"Exactly." Bumi agreed with Sasuke. "After all, there's only fourteen of us and one ship."
"Alright, what do you suggest?" Tenzin asked.
"This calls for strategy." Bumi declared. "I remember when I was surrounded by pirates at the Hurricane Straits. We managed to capture them all with just a feather, two eggs, and a barrel of molasses…"
"I don't want to hear any more of your crazy stories right now!" Tenzin yelled. "This is serious!"
Just then, Asami arrived.
"Are we almost there?" Bolin asked.
"Almost, but I just picked up a distress signal from the Southern troops." Asami informed. "There's a problem."
"What problem?" Neji asked.
"It's Tonraq." Asami informed, shocking the Avatar and Uchiha.
Southern Water Tribe: White Lotus Compound
The fourteen-person group arrived at the compound via Oogi, Naga, and snowmobiles.
"Mom!" Korra shouted as she and Sasuke dismounted Naga.
Senna ran up and hugged the pair. "I'm so happy you're both here."
"Where's Tonraq?" Sasuke asked.
"Unalaq wiped out the entire Southern resistance and has captured your father." Senna responded, her voice breaking and saddened.
Sasuke's gaze hardened as Unalaq just couldn't stop taking things away. "Unalaq…"
"We'll get him back." Korra stated determined.
"Where's my mother?" Tenzin asked as he carried Jinora's body.
"In the healing hut." Senna shook her head. "So, many injured."
Healing Hut
Injured men and women were being tended to by healers.
Katara had just finished with a patient when she spotted the group, her eyes ending on Jinora's body as she approached. "What happened?"
"Her soul has been trapped in the Spirit World." Sasuke informed.
"Oh, my goodness." Katara voiced concerned. "How long has she been away?"
"Almost a week." Kya informed. "I've tried to keep her energy flowing, but I can feel her slipping away. You're the only one who can help her now."
Tenzin placed Jinora in a healing tub with Katara starting to heal her body.
"How much longer can she survive like this?" Tenzin asked.
"I don't know, but she's very strong to have lasted this long." Katara responded.
White Lotus Compound: Later…
The group left the hut to discuss the current situation.
"I've talked to the rebels." Korra informed. "They said Unalaq's got the Southern portal surrounded."
"With Harmonic Convergence only a few hours away, it's the smart move." Sasuke reasoned.
"There's no use in talking anymore." Tenzin voiced. "We know what our mission is."
"No, there is something more to discuss." Kakashi voiced. "Sakura, I want you to remain here and utilize your skills to tend to the wounded. Hopefully, what you've learned will clear out room for anyone we may have to send your way."
"Kakashi Sensei…" Sakura began, wanting to refute her placement.
"Sakura, you were training under Lady Tsunade before coming to this side of the world, right?" Sasuke questioned.
"Yes." Sakura answered.
"I can't imagine she's taught you her insane strength at this point, I simply have not seen it." Sasuke voiced. "As such, I must imagine you know a fair bit from her medical expertise. That means your skills will be better served here, helping the injured here and any we send back."
"Sasuke…" Sakura nodded firmly before turning to Kakashi. "Sensei, I got this."
She rushed back into the hut to begin working with the healers.
Seeing this got Kya thinking. "As much as I'd like to come help Jinora out of the Spirit World, I think I'll be better served here, ensuring mom can focus solely on her." She rested a hand on Tenzin's arm. "I'll utilize everything mom taught me to ensure Jinora has a body to return to."
Tenzin nodded firmly at that before his sister entered the hut as well.
"You know, thinking about it, this is a rather similar situation to one I once found myself in." Bumi voiced. "My platoon had crawled through the desert with no water for a week, but when we finally located the one oasis for a hundred miles, it was surrounded by angry Sandbenders. I fashioned a catapult, and with the help of a few well-trained hog-monkeys…"
"Enough with your ridiculous lies!" Tenzin yelled. "Can't you see the world and Jinora's life depend on what we do here today?"
"Hold on, I think Bumi might be onto something." Asami said.
"What are you talking about?" Shikamaru asked.
"We don't have a catapult or hog-monkeys; however, we do have a flying bison, a plane on Varrick's ship, and some Shinobi." Asami informed.
"We attack from above." Neji realized.
"What are you thinking?" Korra asked.
"I'll utilize the plane to fly Mako, Bolin, Kiba, Lee, Shikamaru, and Neji over the base." Asami informed. "The brothers can utilize explosives while the Shinobi throw down their kunai with attached paper bombs. In the distraction that cases, Tenzin can have Oogi fly himself, Sasuke, Korra, Bumi, and Kakashi into the Spirit Portal whenever there is an opening."
"Solid plan Asami." Sasuke stated.
Unalaq's Compound
Desna and Eska arrived at their father's tent.
"What are we still doing here, father?" Eska asked.
"The invasion was successful, and the Southern Tribe is under our control." Desna added. "The Spirit Portals are open."
"You've restored balance." Eska voiced. "Now, we would like to go home."
"You don't understand." Unalaq retorted. "Everything I've achieved so far will pale in comparison with what I'm about to accomplish."
"What else is there?" Desna asked. "The Water Tribe is united."
"After today, there will be no Water Tribe; no more nations of any kind." Unalaq informed. "The world is about to be transformed into something magnificent and new. I will lead this glorious revolution. Now, go outside and get the troops ready to defend the Spirit Portal."
"From whom?" Eska asked. "We've already beaten everyone."
"The Avatar and Uchiha will be here soon." Unalaq responded. "They have no choice…"
South Pole
Asami piloted Varrick's plane and gave a thumbs up to Tenzin, who nodded in return. Mako, Kiba, and Neji were on the right ring while Bolin, Lee, and Shikamaru were on the left wing.
"Are you ready?" Asami asked.
"I'm an Earthbender strapped to the wing of a plane, which is hundreds of feet in the air, so no." Bolin answered.
"Don't worry." Mako stated. "There's no way they'll be expecting this."
As they approached the compound, everyone could see the dark spirits encircling the portal to the Spirit World while Northern troops stood ready to fight.
"I think they were expecting it." Shikamaru voiced.
As the plane flew closer to the compound, the soldiers began bending icicles at the plane.
"Asami!" Bolin yelled.
"Get ready…" Asami managed to maneuver through the attacks. "Fire!"
Mako Firebent at the compound while Neji and Shikamaru hurled kunai with attached paper bombs. On the second fly by, Kiba and Lee threw their respective kunai with paper bombs while Bolin Earthbent disk with attached explosives.
As once, the Shinobi made the hand signs to set off the paper bombs while Bolin pressed his detonator. All those explosions went off around the compound scattering men and disabling mecha tanks. Oogi now flew for the portal.
"There are dark spirits everywhere." Korra noted. "Even with the soldiers distracted, I'm not seeing an opening."
"We'll circle around and see if we can find a way in from the other side." Suddenly, Tenzin had to make Oogi dodge as they were accosted by dark spirits. "Hold on!"
Oogi managed to avoid them for a moment, but one managed to attach itself to the sky bison to slow him. This enabled multiple spirits to start latching on. Korra Airbent ones from below away while Kakashi threw kunai, imbued with Lighting Nature, at ones coming from above.
"The spirits are weighing Oogi down!" Tenzin shouted. "We're losing altitude!"
Sasuke noticed a spirit attempting to fly by over the saddle as it headed for Tenzin. "Not on my watch!" He charged lightning to his right hand before leaping at the spirit. "Chidori!"
Given Sasuke wasn't currently utilizing any stages of his Curse Mark, he was purely attempting to deter the spirit. Rather than be deterred, it forced itself forward and allowed the lightning cloaked hand to pierce it.
The Uchiha yelled as he decided to roll with it and up the lightning nature he was putting out. By proxy of his hand being within the spirit, this saw it beginning to turn to purple particles as the Uchiha was sent into free fall, to the shock of everyone.
"Sasuke!" Korra/Kakashi cried.
Asami continued to move around the compound and allowed her passengers every opportunity to attack the place; however, more Northern troops bent icicles. This time, they hit the plane, damaging it. Still, Asami could keep up the aerial maneuvers.
As they flew by, Mako Firebent a wave of flames to send the soldier scattering. With the next pass, Bolin bent down the last of his earth disk while the Shinobi finished out their stock of explosives by hitting every mecha tank they could see. The resulting explosions took them out.
"I wish Varrick was filming this." Bolin declared.
"I agree!" Lee voiced. "It would be called 'Nuktuk: Sky Warrior'!"
"Has a nice ring to it." Kiba agreed.
Just then, Desna and Eska obliterated the tail of the plane with their Waterbending.
"They got us!" Neji called out.
"Brace yourselves!" Asami yelled.
The plane crashed outside the compound. Mako, Bolin, Asami, Kiba, Lee, Neji, and Shikamaru had been rendered unconscious. As for Oogi, he too could no longer stay airborne and crashed as well. This left Korra, Kakashi, Tenzin, and Bumi unconscious as well.
Unalaq's Compound: Later…
Korra awoke to find herself within a tent, her limbs bound by chains. Tenzin, Bumi, and Kakashi were bound nearby. Her father, who was injured and bound, was also nearby.
"Dad…"
"Korra…I'm sorry. I failed you."
"Don't give up." Korra stated. "Harmonic Convergence isn't here yet. We still have a chance."
Just then, Desna and Eska threw Mako, Bolin, Asami, Kiba, Lee, Neji, and Shikamaru, who were also bound, inside the tent.
"Sorry, Kakashi Sensei." Lee voiced.
"We tried." Mako said.
"It'll be alright." Kakashi stated.
"Congratulations, everyone." Unalaq had arrived. "You've all got front row seats for the beginning of a new world order."
"You don't know what you're doing, Unalaq." Korra voided. "Freeing Vaatu won't make you powerful; it will only make you a traitor to everything good that's happened over the last ten thousand years."
"You think what Avatar Wan did was good?" Unalaq questioned. "He drove almost all the spirits from this world. The Avatar hasn't brought balance, only chaos. You call yourself the bridge between worlds, but there shouldn't be a bridge. We should live together as one."
"Even if Vaatu escapes, I'll put him back in his prison, just as Wan and Indra did." Korra said.
"It's true that when Wan fused with Raava, he tipped the scales in her favor, but I shall level the playing field this time." Unalaq declared.
"What are you talking about?" Lee asked.
"When Harmonic Convergence comes, I will fuse with Vaatu, and together we will become the new Avatar." Unalaq responded to the shock of everyone. "Your era is over, Korra."
"Think about what you're doing." Tonraq was trying to appeal to his brother. "I know you've always had a deep connection with the spirits, but you're still a man. You're still my brother. You're Eska's and Desna's father."
"Are you actually willing to throw your humanity away to become a monster?" Kakashi asked.
"I'll be more of a monster than Korra." Unalaq retorted. "The only difference is that while she barely recognizes her own spiritual power, I will be in complete alignment with mine. Vaatu and I will be one, and no one will stand against us."
"That won't matter." Korra declared. "You don't have Sasuke, and I'm sure he'll come help us. Then, we'll put an end to your madness."
"That right there is why you're truly unfit to be the Avatar." Unalaq stated. "You've allowed that Uchiha brat into our country. The only good thing Wan ever did was accepting Indra leaving. Shinobi being far from us is balance.
The minute you took that Uchiha trash into this country, balance was ruined. With him came more Shinobi." He glared at the Konoha Shinobi, who glared back in turn. "They don't have the right to exist in this world, which is why one of my goals will be their extermination."
Like throwing the world into ten thousand years of darkness is any sort of balance." Kiba scoffed. "Face it pal, regardless of how right or wrong you are, we can't be anywhere near as bad as what you're trying to do."
"Still your tongue, filthy ninja!" Unalaq yelled.
"To claim we don't deserve to exist because of what we are, how narrow minded." Neji stated. "No matter what Indra was, he could utilize Chakra. Clearly, he was around before Wan ever became Avatar. In some form, the likes of us existed in the age you glorify."
"Keep them looked up." Unalaq ignored Neji in favor of looking to his children. "After Harmonic Convergence, I will come for Korra."
"Yes, father." Eska said.
Unalaq then left the tent.
"I've failed in every way." Tenzin voiced in despair. "We've lost Jinora forever."
"There's still a chance." Bumi assured his younger brother. "They haven't gotten Sasuke, and that kid is tough as nails."
"I'm sure he'll come." Kakashi said.
"I know he will." Korra added.
South Pole
Sasuke took deep breaths as the last particles of that spirit dissipated. "I can only imagine Vaatu was behind that first spirit sticking around back at the start of all this. Now that he's close to being free, the dark spirit must not be paying attention.
Now, I got to find the others." Just then, Naga arrived with Pabu atop her head."Naga, Pabu." He ran to the animals and hugged the polar bear-dog. "I'm glad you two are here." He pulled back. "Come on, we're heading towards the compound."
Unalaq's Compound
The twins were keeping watch.
"Eska, Desna, listen to me." Korra voiced. "You've got to help us stop Unalaq. I know he's your father, but Vaatu has made him insane."
"We will never turn on our father." Eska retorted.
"Please." Korra begged. "If you let me out now, I can still stop him from destroying everything. Once he fuses with Vaatu, no one else will be safe. Desna, he won't be your father anymore."
"You don't know what you're talking about!" Desna stated firmly. "Our father is the wisest man in the world. If he says what he's doing is right, I believe him."
"So much for reasoning." Shikamaru muttered.
South Pole
Sasuke carefully scouted around the compound from all the highest points he could find. He managed to catch sight of Eska and Desna looking out a flap of a tent at the center of the compound.
"That must be where everyone is." Sasuke bit his thumb before weaving the signs and slamming his hand on the ground. "Summoning Jutsu!"
There was a massive puff of smoke, which the Uchiha knew someone at the compound must have seen. Within this smoke, the outline of the massive serpent that was Tsuki could be seen.
"Why have you summoned me, Sasuke?" Tsuki asked.
"We're closing in on the end of the world." Sasuke voiced, as the snake gazed into his eyes. "I need you to rampage through that compound of soldiers, fast. Leave the center tent unharmed and garner those dark spirits attention before taking them away."
Tsuki could see her summoner needed her now, so she nodded. "It shall be done."
She slithered quickly towards the compound and plowed through the wall, just as the men concluded this was no dark spirit. As Tsuki rampaged, everything in the massive snake's path was destroyed.
Sasuke now mounted Naga. "Let's go girl!"
Unalaq's Compound
Naga burst into the tent and drove the twins into the ground hard.
"Stay down, Gloom 1 and Gloom 2!" Sasuke declared.
"Sasuke!" Bolin cheered.
Sasuke freed everyone before they stepped outside to see the utterly wrecked compound. They could also catch sight of the massive white snake bursting through another wall of the compound and pressing on while followed by a large horde of dark spirits.
"That is one long snake." Kiba noted.
"No kidding." Shikamaru agreed.
"I made a good connection after leaving Republic City." Sasuke shrugged. "Now, we got to get to that portal."
Southern Portal
As they ran towards said portal, the Uchiha was filled in on Unalaq's plan. "So, Unalaq wants to fuse with Vaatu and become an Avatar?" He nodded. "Just another reason why we must stop him."
Upon reaching the portal, Tonraq attempted to step up. "You all head in." He groaned in pain. "I'll hold off anyone who tries to stop you."
"No, you're too hurt." Korra voiced. "You need a healer."
"This is our fight now." Sasuke added.
"I know." Tonraq hugged the pair of them. "I love you, both."
"We love you too, dad." Korra then turned to Asami. "Asami, can you go with him?"
"I got it." Asami and Tonraq boarded Oogi. "Yip yip."
They flew off, leaving Korra, Sasuke, Mako, Bolin, Kiba, Lee, Shikamaru, Neji, Tenzin, Bumi, and Kakashi.
"Once we we're inside, Tenzin, Bumi, and Kakashi will go find Jinora." Korra declared. "Sasuke, Mako, Bolin, Kiba, Lee, Shikamaru, and Neji, I'll be counting on you to take care of Unalaq while I close the portals to prevent Vaatu's escape."
"Wait, worst case scenario." Kiba voiced. "We're fighting Unalaq, you close the portals, and let's just say something happens to you. Are we trapped in there forever?"
"Nothing will happen to Korra." Bolin assured.
"Listen, if everything goes as planned, we'll all walk out of this together after Harmonic Convergence." Korra stated. "If not…"
She had stopped, not liking to think of the alternative.
"We'll be fine as long as we work together." Kakashi declared.
"Let's go." Korra said, before the eleven of them entered the portal.
Spirit World
Unalaq was before the tree, awaiting Vaatu's escape, when the group emerged.
"This is what the Spirit World looks like." Neji noted.
"Where are the spirits?" Kiba asked.
As if on cue, said spirits moved around Unalaq. They then darted towards the entire group with the chief getting atop one of them.
"There's your answer." Sasuke wove threw hand signs. "Water Style: Water Shuriken!"
Multiple water shuriken were formed and launched at the oncoming spirits, scattering them.
"Tenzin, Bumi, and Kakashi, go look for Jinora." Korra called out. "We got this."
The three eldest among the group obeyed the Avatar and left. At this point, the spirits regrouped before charging the remaining eight people. Korra entered the Avatar State while Sasuke activated his Sharingan, and the pair dashed towards the dark spirits.
Sasuke wove through more hand signs. "Phoenix Flower Jutsu!"
Multiple, small burst of flames were fired off before Korra Airbent after them to increase their size. This knocked the spirits back; however, Unalaq lept off the dark spirit before forming a slide of ice to reach the ground and unleash a powerful water blast.
Mako and Bolin rushed forward, defending the group with their respective bending, while Korra rushed for the Southern portal and began to close it. At this point, Unalaq overpowered Mako and Bolin's defense, breaking through. He then bent up water and fired it off at the Shinobi.
"Byakugan!" Neji stepped forward and spun in place. "Palm Rotation!"
He expelled Chakra from all his tenketsu points and formed a dome which held up to the deluge of water.
With Unalaq now stationary, and on the ground, Shikamaru formed his clan's signature hand sign. "Shadow Possession Jutsu!"
Unalaq suddenly stopped, his movement forced to mirror Shikamaru's, before his armor's crystal glowed briefly. He was now free to move, but the moment of pause was enough for Sasuke, Kiba, and Lee to draw close. The three of them laid into the man with punches and kicks.
"You're running out of time, Raava." Vaatu declared. "I know you can feel it coming."
As the planets aligned, just as Korra almost sealed the portal, there was a pulse of energy that pushed her back. Everyone stopped and backed away as the two portals collided.
Elemental Nations
Outside the portal, Desna and Eska were pushed back by a wave of purple energy that began to spread across the planet. In Republic City, Lin shielded herself as the wave passed before she and the citizens looked up to see the sky was purple.
Shinobi Country
Outside a hideout, Itachi looked up at the sky as Kisame joined him. "Well now, this is interesting." He looked at the Uchiha. "Bet your brother has something to do with this, eh?"
In Konoha, all the villagers stopped to look at the sky, with Tsunade staring out her window. "What's happening?"
Somewhere in a field, Naruto looked up at the sky with Jiraiya. "Pervy Sage, what the heck's going on?
"Seems like trouble." Jiraiya responded.
Spirit World
As the entire planet was cloaked in purple, the two portals began to unleash lightning that hit the tree. Suddenly, the lightning stopped, and everything went black until a burst of energy exploded from said tree. Vaatu was free. Unalaq smiled wickedly while everyone else looked on in shock.
"Free at last!" Vaatu declared. "You're too late, Raava." He then looked at Sasuke. "You. That Chakra. Indra Otsutsuki, we meet again."
"What?" Sasuke asked shocked.
"You're saying…" Korra stopped in disbelief.
"Now, I'll have revenge on both of you!" Vaatu declared.
