"Mario… we need you and Roll to be on the team. We don't have much of a winning chance without you two."
"That's the thing. Why do you and the others insist that you need my sister and me to win? There are tons of other students here who would probably want to compete!"
"It's because of your cousin, isn't it? What lies has she been whispering into your ear?"
"Let me make something clear, rich girl. You disrespect my cousin: you disrespect me. When you talk about her blood, you talk about my blood."
"Sunny, wake up. Face the facts! We're on our own!"
"Roll… I know it must be hard to fight family. But… we need you!"
"I know you don't want to disappoint your friends or let them down, and I know you don't want to fight your cousin. But if you look inside your heart, I'm sure you'll find the answer you seek."
"What do you want, rich girl?"
"Tell her that I want a duel with her."
"Trust me, rich girl. You don't want that."
"I accept your challenge… on one condition. What I propose is simple. Three on three."
"And now… Prismaura, attack her directly!"
"Izzy!"
Izzy was shown struggling to get up. The girl had just suffered defeat at the hands of one of her opponents from Crystal Prep. Roxanne merely smiled at seeing Izzy get to her feet after the humiliating loss she had handed the girl. She turned and walked over to her teammates as they all stood up, with Flurry Heart coming forward and applauding.
"Nice one, Roxy," said the girl.
"That's two of them taken care of. They can't handle my Fusion power," responded the girl.
"Izzy, you good?" asked Sunny as she and Hitch were beside her.
"Yeah, I'm good," said the girl, not fully confident in that statement.
Hitch and Sunny put the girl's arms around their shoulders as they decided to carry her back to the bench. Watching his friends, Mario looked at them as he glanced over at Zipp.
"I warned you," said the boy so the girl could hear him.
She looked over at her friend and glared. The boy looked over at his cousin and her group as they talked.
"Alright, JD. You're in!" said Roxanne as she tagged the boy in.
"You know what to do, right?" said Flurry as she put her hand on the boy's shoulder.
"Of course," responded the boy as she adjusted his blazer and walked forward. "Hey, Sheriff!"
The trio had made it back to the bench when they turned around to look at the boy addressing them. Hitch knew JD was referring to him as he looked at him with a concerned expression.
"We duelin' or what!"
"Go'em, Hitch!" said Zipp as she approached the trio and took Izzy from his arms.
"You got this, bud," stated Izzy.
The boy turned to look at his friends as he felt he should ensure Izzy was okay. The two girls gave him reassuring expressions as they gestured for him to duel. He gave a returning nod as he turned to look at the Crystal Prep boy who was challenging him.
"Be careful, Hitch!" said Sunny as she touched his shoulder.
"Don't worry. I will," responded the boy as he grabbed her hand and held it before letting go and walking to the field.
JD was eyeing Hitch as he'd been keeping tabs on the boy ever since Flurry assigned him his mission. He knew Hitch was a Synchro user and fancied himself a pretty good one. But compared to him, he would show this sheriff whose game it belonged to.
"Okay," said Hitch as he took a deep breath.
"Get ready, sheriff. 'Cause I'm the slickest Synchro summoner at Crystal Prep. And you're gonna find out that you never bet against an Ace!" stated JD as he pointed to himself with his thumb.
He and Hitch pulled out their duel disks and strapped them on their wrists. Both opened the card deck box on their side and slotted in their decks. Hitch's duel disk projected a green card tray, and JD's projected an orange card tray.
"Opponent detected. Streaming data. Duel mode set. Initiating. Commencing duel." said their duel disks.
"Let's duel!" shouted both boys.
JD's Life Points: 8000-
Hitch's Life Points: 8000-
Turn 1: Hitch (Hand 5)
"I'm gonna kick things off if you don't mind," said Hitch as he drew his card and looked at his hand. "To start, I play the spell card, Reincarnation of Hope. Now, by discarding two cards from my hand, during my 2nd Standby Phase, I can add any monster I want to my hand. Next, I'm summoning Shield Wing(0/900) in defense mode!" A tiny dragon emerged as it crossed its arms, and its wings formed a shield.
"I end my turn."
"You're kidding me, right? You play a risky spell and follow it up with a weak monster with a measly 900 defense points? That's your big opening play, sheriff." scoffed JD as he criticized Hitch's move.
"It's not the monsters you use; it's how you use your monsters!" responded Hitch.
Turn 2: JD (Hand 5)
"You're just digging a hole for yourself, sheriff. My turn. I draw!" said the boy as he drew his card and held it out before glancing at what he drew with a smile. "I'll start off this blowout with XX-Saber Boggart Knight(1900/1000)!" Out came a beast dawned in silver armor, wearing a tattered red cape as it swung its sword. "With big bad Boggart Knight in the yard, I get to summon one Level 4 or below 'X-Saber' monster from my hand. So I summon the Level 3 tuner monster, XX-Saber Fulhelmknight(1300/1000)!" A female blond knight emerged. She twirled her sword like a whip as it rotated before her.
"A Level 3 tuner monster? That's not good," said Zipp, as she could already see what Hitch's opponent was planning.
"Oh, I'm not done. 'Cause whenever I have two or more 'X-Saber' monsters on my field, I get to summon XX-Saber Faultroll(2400/1800)!" Out emerged a muscular swordsman donning red armor and special red gear on its back that looked like swords.
"He's already got three monsters on the field!" said Izzy in awe at what she saw.
"Now, watch how a true Synchro duelist does it. Check this out: Level 3 XX-Saber Fulhelmknight tunes with my Level 4 Boggart Knight!" shouted JD as he raised his hand upward, and his female monster turned into three giant green rings that circled his other monster as a yellow light surged through. "I Synchro Summon! X-Saber Souza(2500/1600)!" A tall warrior wearing a tattered red cape and armor, excluding its chest and biceps, emerged as it wielded two swords.
"There's more! Once per turn, XX-Saber Faultroll can summon a Level 4 or below 'X-Saber' monster from my graveyard. I'm calling out XX-Saber Fulhelmknight!" JD's monster stabbed his sword into the ground as a shiny portal opened up, and his female knight appeared once more as she twirled her whip-sword.
"So, he brought back the tuner monster he used to Synchro Summon, which can only mean…" Sunny looked in awe and fear as she didn't like what would happen next.
"I Synchro Summon one more time! Level 3 Fulhelmknight tunes Level 6 Faultroll!" shouted the boy as his female monster turned into three giant green rings that circled his other monster as a yellow light surged through. "I Synchro Summon! XX-Saber Gottoms(3100/2600)!" A giant, fully armored beast warrior with bits of gold on the armor appeared as it wielded a giant halberd sword, donning a long red cape, and rested the blade on its shoulders.
"I hate to say it, guys. But Hitch has his work cut out for him. 'Cause JD looks ready to slice and dice his way to victory." said Zipp as the boy was forced to stare down two Synchro monsters his opponent managed to bring out on his first turn.
"You don't stand a chance of defeating me, Hitch!" proclaimed JD. "What's the matter? Too shocked to say anything, sheriff?"
"You can run your mouth if you want to, but I don't do trash-talking. I fight my battles with skills and monsters, not with jawbonin'!" responded Hitch.
"You want skills and monsters? I'll give you more than you can handle, a lot more!" said JD as he pointed at the boy. "XX-Saber Gottoms, attack his Shield Wing!" The giant monster leaped forward and swung its massive sword as it slashed at Hitch's tiny monster.
"Let me introduce you to Shield Wing's special ability! Twice per turn, it can't be destroyed in battle. So he's not going anywhere!" said Hitch as he had a monster that could protect his Life Points and then some.
"Well, I got something planned for later for you, sheriff. I place one card facedown and end my turn."
Turn 3: Hitch (Hand 2)
"My move!"
"Hitch bought himself some time, but Shield Wing can't protect him forever," said Zipp as the girls watched to see what their friend would do.
"I activate the spell card, Tuning. This lets me add a 'Synchron' tuner monster from my deck to my hand and then send the top card of my deck to the graveyard. So, I'm adding my Junk Synchon(1300/500) and then summoning him!" stated Hitch as a yellow monster appeared. "And then Junk Synchron's ability allows me to revive a Level 2 or below monster from my graveyard. So, I'm bringing back my Speed Warrior. And then I'll tune my Junk Synchron with my Speed Warrior!" Junk Synchron pulled its chord, turning into three giant green rings that circled his comrade as a yellow light surged. "From two come one, and from one will come great power. Watch as they merge their might! I Synchro Summon, Junk Speeder(1800/1000)!" A robotic warrior in white and blue quickly dashed onto the field before the boy and struck a fighting stance.
"And when I Synchro Summon this bad boy, I can activate his effect. Now, I can summon as many 'Synchron' tuner monsters as I want from my deck in defense mode. So I'm bringing out Turbo Synchron(100/500) and Changer Synchron(0/0)!" stated the boy as he had two more monsters appear.
"Those weak, pathetic monsters won't do you any good," barked JD.
"Well, how about this? I change my Turbo Synchron into attack mode. Then Junk Speeder, attack his XX-Saber Gottoms!" said Hitch.
"Hitch, are you crazy?!" shouted Sunny at what her best friend was doing by having a weaker monster attack a stronger one.
"Maybe. Maybe not. Because on the turn that Junk Speeder is Synchro Summoned, whenever it battles, its attack points double until the end of the turn!" smiled the boy. His monster powered up as it quickly zoomed forward, bashed into JD's monster and took it out.
JD's Life Points: 7500-
"And now… Turbo Synchron, attack his XX-Saber Souza!"
"What?!" shouted everybody else, minus Flurry and Mario, as the two cousins looked on with curious and serious looks.
"Hitch, you're crazy! You're gonna lose your monster!" shouted Zipp.
"No, I won't! When Turbo Synchron attacks, it can change the monster it's targeting into defense mode!" said the boy.
"Either way, that little synchron has no hope of breaking through Souza's defense. And with defeat comes damage!" stated JD as Hitch's tiny motor monster merely crashed into Souza's swords and flew back toward the boy.
Hitch's Life Points: 6500-
"What the hell was Hitch thinking? His monster's attack was weaker than Souza's defense, and he just took damage because of it!" expressed Zipp.
"Guess he made a mistake," sighed Izzy.
"Hitch, do you realize what you just did?" shouted Sunny at her childhood friend.
"Yup," smiled Hitch as he knew how the girl would react.
"Huh?"
"I activate my Turbo Synchron's other effect. See, when it attacks and loses, its ability lets me summon a monster from my hand as long as its attack points aren't greater than the damage I took. So I'm summoning Junk Collector(1000/2200)! And now, I activate Junk Collector's ability. This forces me to remove a trap card in my graveyard from play entirely… but in doing so, it lets me activate it!"
"But you don't have any trap cards in your graveyard… all you have is…" JD stopped his line of thinking as he registered something. At the start of his turn, he recalled how Hitch played the Tuning spell card, which forced him to send the top card of his deck to the graveyard. The boy realized that whatever card he was forced to send away was a trap.
"Looks like you figured it out. The trap I sent to the graveyard was… my Urgent Tuning trap card!"
"Nice move," responded JD as he gritted his teeth.
"Oh, yeah? If you thought that was nice, then this next move is totally going to blow you away!" said Zipp as she knew what her friend was planning.
"That's right, JD! Thanks to the power of my Urgent Tuning trap card, I can Synchro Summon during the Battle Phase. I tune my Junk Forward with my Turbo Synchron!" shouted Hitch as his tiny monster turned into a single green giant ring that circled his other monster as a yellow light surged through. "Watch as I shift my power into overdrive! I Synchro Summon! Rev your engines, Turbo Warrior(2500/1500)!" A red motorized warrior appeared as it landed beside Hitch.
"So much sacrifice for one monster… it seems you're not too afraid of flying too close to the sun, huh, sheriff?" mocked JD.
"Go, Turbo Warrior! Take out XX-Saber Souza!" declared Hitch as his monster thrust his right arm out; its hand glowed and broke through the warrior's swords, shattering them before the hand dealt a finishing blow and took him out.
"That's enough hurt for now. It's your move," smiled Hitch.
Turn 4: JD (Hand 2)
"I'll show you hurt. Hiya!" said JD as he drew. "I activate the spell card, Pot of Greed, so I pick up two more cards from my deck. Next, I play Monster Reborn to revive my Souza!" stated JD as his defeated monster rose.
"Great," responded Hitch sarcastically, as he wasn't a fan of this.
"I then summon another XX-Saber Boggart Knight! And thanks to Boggart Knight's ability, I can double the trouble and summon another 'Saber' monster out to the field! XX-Saber Ragigura(200/1000) will give me the edge I need!" Out came a chameleon standing on its hind legs as it donned armor, a red cape that was bigger than it and had two mini daggers in its hands.
"Oh, a little lizard man!" said Izzy with a smile at the sight of the reptile.
"With XX-Saber Ragigura on my field, I can add a sword-slicing X-Saber in my graveyard to my hand. I'm picking Faultroll!" stated JD as his duel disk ejected the card he wanted for him to grab. "And I can summon my Faultroll when I have at least two X-Sabers on my field. This guy can really slice things up." JD's monster appeared as it stood behind its smaller comrades. "And once a turn, I can summon a Level 4 or below X-Saber from my graveyard."
"His field is packed as it is!" said Sunny with a worried look on her face.
"I'm bringing back the tuner monster XX-Saber Fulhelmknight!" declared the Crystal Prep boy. "Brace yourself! Level 3 Fulhelmknight tunes Level 6 Faultroll!" The female knight turned into three giant green rings circling its comrade as a yellow light surged. "This is a tune that's music to my ears. I bet you can't wait to see what's coming your way. I Synchro Summon! XX-Saber Gottoms!"
"Not another one!" said Izzy as Hitch had a tough time beating that monster the first time, and now he would have to face it again.
"Now Gottoms, attack his Unchanger Synchron!" said JD.
"Seems you're the one who's making a mistake. My Changer Synchron is in defense mode, so my Life Points are safe."
"Guess again," the Crystal Prep teen responded as his facedown flipped up, "I'm activating… Meteorain! With this trap, I can inflict piercing damage! And since your Changer Synchron has no defense points, you're taking the full brute of this attack! Here's what 3100 points of damage feels like, Sheriff!" Gottoms reeled back and swung his sword as it destroyed the smaller monster easily, sending a massive wave to Hitch as he tried to stand his ground and not move.
Hitch's Life Points: 3400-
"Now, Souza. Attack his Shield Wing!"
"Shield Wing can withstand up to three attacks!" said Hitch as JD's monster delivered a slash attack that shot forward and collided with his monster, who tried to fend off the attack.
"Yeah, so what? My trap Meteorain is still in effect, so you're taking even more damage!" expressed JD. The attack bypassed Hitch's monster and flew toward him as he was taken off his feet and crashed to the floor.
Hitch's Life Points: 1800-
"At least it's over," said Sunny as she released a breath she didn't know she was holding in.
"Now, I tribute Boggart Knight to activate Gottoms' special ability! That means one card in your hand's going to the graveyard." Gottoms held his sword above his comrade's head as he turned into a blue light and fired forward.
"Huh? What the…?" said Hitch as the blue light enveloped one of the cards in his hand as he got to a knee. He grabbed the glowing card and sent it away.
"Oh, no! Now Hitch only has one card left in his hand!" said Sunny with a now worried look.
"I got more bad news for you!" shouted JD.
"Huh?" said Hitch as he looked at his foe.
"I tribute Ragigura to activate Gottoms' special ability again!"
Just like before, Gottoms held his sword above his comrade as he turned into a blue light and shot forward. The light surrounded the last card in Hitch's hand as it glowed. He grabbed the card and sent it away as he was now empty.
"Hitch just lost his last card!" shouted Zipp as she was worried.
"How can he win if he doesn't have any cards in his hand?" asked Izzy with concern.
"Looks like your little rally has been snuffed, sheriff!" stated JD as he set a card facedown and ended his turn.
Turn 5: Hitch (Hand 0)
Hitch returned to his feet as he stared down his foe. The boy kept a defiant look, believing he could turn things around. The boy looked at his deck as he placed his hand on top of it and took a deep breath.
"Now, my Reincarnation of Hope's effect activates. Allowing me to add any monster card I want to my hand. Then I draw!" said the boy as he drew and looked at the card. "I summon Boost Warrior(300/200). Then I'm gonna tune my Level 3 Shield Wing with my Level 1 Boost Warrior!" Hitch's monster turned into a single giant green ring as it circled around his other monster. "I Synchro Summon, Armory Arm(1800/1200)! And then I equip Armory Arm onto my Turbo Warrior to give it an extra 1000 attack boost!"
"A monster that can power up another monster. You really got lucky," said JD.
"Luck had nothing to do with summoning that monster because it's all part of my plan. Now, Turbo Warrior, attack his Gottoms! And thanks to Turbo Warrior's special ability, when it battles a Level 6 or higher monster, it can slash its attack points in half!" stated Hitch as his monster weakened JD's massive warrior before thrusting its hand out and delivering a jab that punched through it and exploded.
JD's Life Points: 5550-
"Yeah! That's the way, Hitch!" shouted Zipp with words of encouragement to her friend.
"I'll show you. I'm gonna finish you, sheriff!" shouted JD angrily at Hitch for destroying his monster.
"Now, Armory Arm's effect activates. Since the monster that it's equipped to destroyed yours, you now take damage equal to Gottoms' attack points!" said Hitch. "So that means you lose 3100 more Life Points!"
Turbo Warrior thrust his hand out as a solid red beam of energy began to make its way toward the Crystal Prep student.
"Heh. Just as I expected."
"Wha?"
"I activate my facedown, Saber Reflection! Thanks to this card, not only do I shield myself from your damage, but it also increases my Life Points by that same amount. But here's the best part… now you take the exact amount of damage that I would have taken!" said JD with a smug smile.
JD's Life Points: 8650-
"It's over, sheriff!"
"No!" shouted the girls.
Hitch could only watch in awe as the attack was reflected right back at him. The red beam was coming at the teen as he had nothing to protect himself with; the attack made contact as he tried to hold on, but it was too much, and he let out a defeated cry before hitting the floor.
Hitch's Life Points: 0-
Winner: JD
"Hitch!" cried out Sunny as she rushed forward to her friend.
"This can't be…." muttered Zipp as she couldn't believe their rivals defeated her friends twice in a row.
Sunny approached her best friend, who was beginning to lift his head. The girl grabbed it and held it while helping her childhood friend to sit up. JD had a smile on his face at seeing Hitch struggle to get up as he addressed his foe.
"Like I said: Never bet against an Ace!" stated the boy, pointing at himself with his thumb before walking toward Flurry and the others.
"I'm sorry, Sunny. I'm sorry."
"Shh. It's okay. You did your best." said the girl, silencing her best friend by putting a finger to his lips. She gave him a reassuring smile before helping him up and putting his arm around her shoulder.
"Now, do you believe me?" said Mario to Zipp.
"How's that for you folks?" said JD as he approached his friends.
"I expect nothing less, JD," said Flurry Heart as she applauded her friend's efforts.
"Look at them," snickered Phin as they all turned toward Sunny and her defeated group.
"Their principal was confident she put together a good team. Based on their recent losses, she's just blowing smoke up her ass."
"Perhaps. But… we still have one more job to complete."
"Cap, you sure that's necessary?" asked Axiom.
"Leave nothing to chance," said Flurry Heart as she looked at Athena. "You know what to do, right."
"Yeah," nodded the girl.
"So, that's it? We lost," said Zipp as Hitch and Izzy sat on the bench, with Sunny checking on her friends.
"You asked for this, rich girl. And now look… Izzy and Hitch paid the price," responded Mario.
"Mario… we…"
"Hey! There's still one more duel!"
The group turned to look at the field as Athena stood there. The girl who gave herself the nickname, the War Goddess was ready for war and set to do battle.
"What are you talking about? We just lost two duels straight!" said Zipp.
"Yeah, you did. But… I'm a fair girl. Plus, what's one more duel?" mocked Flurry with a smile.
"Go ahead, Zipp. I got them," said Sunny.
"No, no! I don't want you. I want you!" said Athena as she pointed at Sunny.
"Huh?" said both girls as even Mario raised a suspcious eyebrow at that.
"Now, hold on a second!" shouted Zipp.
"What's the matter, little smoothie girl? Are you scared you'll join your pathetic friends?" taunted Athena. "Don't worry; you'll be in worse shape than they were."
Sunny stood up as she looked at the Crystal Prep girl who was challenging her. She looked at Hitch and Izzy as it was clear both were the results of their duels with Crystal Prep. She looked over at Mario, who merely shook his head as if to warn the girl not to go through with it; less, she wanted to end up like the pair before her.
"Alright, I accept," responded Sunny gracefully.
"Excellent," smiled Athena.
"Sunny, don't! I got us into this: don't risk yourself. You're the captain. We need you to be fine!" stated the heiress.
"Sorry, Zipp. My mind's made up," responded the girl as she walked past her friend and onto the field.
"Mario! Say something!" shouted Zipp to her friend, hoping he could convince Sunny it was a bad idea. The boy just stood there as he observed Sunny stepping onto the field.
As Sunny made her way, Athena pulled out her duel disk and strapped it on her wrist. She slotted in her deck as it projected an orange card tray. The Crystal Prep girl recalled her conversation with Flurry Heart just moments ago.
I want you to throw this duel, Athena. Give them a false sense of hope. That way, we can crush them when it's time. Find and exploit everything about Sunny and her dueling skills. But remember, stick to the plan.
"Count on it, Flurry," muttered Athena as the War Goddess had a job to do.
Sunny reached her spot, pulled out her duel disk, and strapped it on, projecting a lavender card tray. The girl briefly looked back at her friends, hoping she wouldn't end up like them.
"Opponent detected. Streaming data. Duel mode set. Initiating. Commencing duel." said their duel disks.
Sunny's Life Points: 8000-
Athena's Life Points: 8000-
"Let's duel!" said both girls.
Turn 1: Athena (Hand 5)
"I'll kick this off. I draw!" said the girl, looking at what she drew and smiling. "I summon… Battlin' Boxer Uppercutter(1600/200)!" A boxer donned in yellow robotic armor with a silver chest plate appeared as its arms extended out of their sockets to deliver an uppercut. "Now, when I summon my Battlin' Boxer Uppercutter, I can add a 'Battlin' Boxer' monster to my hand. So I choose my Battlin' Boxer Sparrer(1200/1400), and since I control a 'Battlin' Boxer,' I can summon him straight to the field!" Another boxer appeared, and this one had punching mats on its arms.
"Next, I overlay both of my Level 4 monsters to build the Overlay Network!" declared Athena as her two monsters turned into orbs of light as they hovered into the air. A portal opened up before the girl as they were sucked in, and a pillar of light emerged. "I Xyz Summon, Battlin' Boxer Lead Yoke(2200/2000, OLU: 2)!" A giant boxer whose hands were trapped in stockades and chains appeared as it stood behind the girl.
"She already Xyz summoned on her first turn?" said Sunny as she was in for a rough time just like her friends.
"Oh, trust me, smoothie girl. You haven't seen anything yet. I place one card facedown and end my turn."
Turn 2: Sunny (Hand 5)
"My turn, then," stated the girl as she drew. "I summon my Summoner Monk(800/1600) in defense mode." An old man in mage robes appeared as he had his hands together. "Then I activate his ability. Once per turn, I can discard a spell card to summon one Level 4 monster from my deck. So I'm bringing out my Magicial Exemplar(1700/1400)." A woman wearing a robe over her head appeared as she lowered her hood to reveal her face.
"Then I'm gonna overlay both of my Level 4 monsters to construct the Overlay Network!" responded Sunny as her two monsters turned into orbs of light and hovered in the air as a portal opened. The orbs were sucked into the portal as a pillar of light emerged. "I Xyz Summon! Rilliona, the Wonderous Magistus Witch Wardrobe(1000/2800, OLU: 2) in defense mode!" A witch dressed in a beautiful white dress appeared as a light shined down on her.
"I then activate my Rilliona's special ability. By using one overlay unit, I can summon 1 'Magistus' monster from my deck." Sunny took one of the cards under her monster and slotted it into the graveyard slot of her duel disk as the monster before her absorbed one of its orbs, circling it. "I choose my Rilliona, the Magistus of Verre(800/1800), in defense mode!" Another female magician, wearing a white outfit, appeared as she spun her staff before grabbing it.
"And since I summoned my Rilliona, I can activate one of her abilities. I can add a 'Magistus' spell or trap card from my deck to my hand!" stated the girl as she touched her duel screen to select the card she wanted. Once she chose, her duel disk ejected the card out for her to grab.
"I set one card facedown."
Turn 3: Athena (Hand 4)
"Not gonna attack?" asked Athena.
"Not my style to rush in without thinking things through," responded Sunny.
"Well, too bad. 'Cause if you won't, I will!" stated the Crystal Prep girl as she drew. "I summon Blue Flame Swordsman(1800/1600)!" A swordsman who wore a blue outfit appeared as the sword he wielded also glowed blue with a symbol on the blade. "Next, I activate my Blue Flame Swordsman's ability. I can transfer 600 of his attack points to my Battlin' Boxer Lead Yoke. Next, by detaching one overlay unit from my Lead Yoke, I can summon my Battlin' Boxer Shadow(1800/1400)!" A dark black boxer appeared, wearing a black headband over his eyes, and quickly delivered a flurry of punches.
"Why get rid of your own monster's overlay unit?" asked Sunny.
"Because Lead Yoke's ability is that when it detaches one of its Xyz materials, it gains 800 attack points! Meaning it now has a total of 3400 attack points!" declared Athena as her monster broke one of its shackles. "Next, I'm overlaying my Blue Flame Swordsman and Battlin' Boxer Shadow to build the Overlay Network!" The girl's monsters turned into orbs of light as they hovered in the air as a portal opened in front of her. The orbs were sucked into the portal as a pillar of light emerged. "I Xyz Summon, Battlin' Boxer King Dempsey(2300/1800, OLU: 2)!" Another boxer appeared as it wore yellow boxing gloves, and the machines on its body revved up.
"When my King Dempsey is summoned, I can add a Level 4 or lower Fire warrior monster from my deck to my hand. Now, Battlin' Boxer Lead Yoke, attack her Rilliona, the Wonderous Magistus Witch Wardrobe!" commanded Athena as her monster reeled its fist back.
"I reveal my facedown. Negate Attack! So now your attack is canc…"
"I don't think so! I activate my facedown, the trap Jolt Counter! Now, not only do I negate your Negate Attack, but I destroy it!" smiled Athena.
"Wha?" expressed Sunny as her trap fizzled out before exploding as she looked away. The girl looked back in time to see the giant boxer rain down a fist on her monster as she was defeated.
"Now. King Dempsey, take out her other Rilliona!" The girl's other monster rushed forward and delivered some quick punches as the girl winced in pain before exploding.
"No!" said Sunny as she witnessed both of her monsters being destroyed.
"And to think you're the captain of your team? Well, you fit the bill. Pathetic and weak." stated Athena.
Sunny gritted her teeth at hearing her opponent calling her that.
"I end my turn," smiled the Crystal Prep girl.
Turn 4: Sunny (Hand 4)
"Sunny, just forfeit! It's not worth it!" shouted Zipp, as she didn't want another one of her friends to pay the price for what she brought upon them.
"No, I'm good," said the girl as she drew. "Since I control no monsters, I can special summon my Exosister Martha(1600/800)! That, in turn, allows me to summon out her sibling, Exosister Elis(500/800)!" A pair of magical sorceresses appeared, with the latter wearing a red dress with silver trimmings and hazel hair while the former wore a more loose-fitting attire and had silver hair. "And here's these monsters' power: I can perform an Xyz Summon using just them separately. So I overlay my Exosister Martha to build the Overlay Network!" Sunny's monster turned into an orb of light as it hovered in the air; a portal opened before her as the orb was sucked in, and a pillar of light emerged. "I Xyz Summon, Exosister Asophiel(2100/800, OLU: 1)!" A pattern of stars appeared as they took the form of a girl; she appeared to have yellow hair and a white outfit with blue legging pants. She had her hand out as a bow of magic appeared.
"Next, I overlay Exosister Elis to build the Overlay Network once more!" declared Sunny as her other monster turned into an orb of light and hovered. Another portal opened before her as the orb was sucked in, and a pillar of light emerged. "I Xyz Summon! Exosister Gibrine(1400/2800)!" Another female appeared; this one had blond hair and wore a white dress while twirling the wand she held.
"Two Xyz Summons, huh? Not bad," said Athena as she credited Sunny with being able to perform that task.
"Now, I activate Asophiel's special ability. By using one overlay unit, I can target one monster you control and return it to your hand. So I choose… your Battlin' Boxer Lead Yoke! But since it's an Xyz monster, that means it goes to your Extra Deck instead of your hand. So that means you have to resummon it all over again!" stated Sunny with a smirk as her monster pulled back her bow and fired a magical arrow. The arrow pierced Lead Yoke as it turned into a light and headed to Athena's duel disk as the card was teleported back into her Extra Deck compartment.
"Then I activate Gibrine's effect. By using one overlay unit for the rest of my turn, all my Xyz monsters gain 800 attack points! So now… Asophiel, attack King Dempsey!" commanded Sunny as her monster pulled back on her bow again and took aim; the arrow pierced through the monster and continued to Athena, who covered up.
Athena's Life Points: 7400-
"Then Gibrine will attack you directly!" The girl waved her wand as it fired a white beam of magic that headed toward Athena, who stood her ground and refused to be taken off her feet.
Athena's Life Points: 5200-
"Clever girl," muttered Athena as she dusted her blazer off.
"Nice one, Sunny!" shouted Zipp.
"Thanks, Zipp. But I'm not done just yet. 'Cause I have one more thing to do. I now overlay both of my Rank 4 Xyz monsters!"
"What?" said Izzy as she and the others were surprised by what Sunny was doing.
Both of Sunny's Xyz monsters turned into orbs of light as they hovered in the air. A portal opened up as they were sucked in, and a pillar of light emerged.
"I Xyz Summon! Rank 8, Exosisters Magnifica(2800/2800, OLU: 2)!" shouted the girl as she slammed her card onto her card tray. Out came a pair of sisters, both wearing similar outfits and armor, but one had a staff with lightly blond hair, and the other had a sword with yellow hair.
"So she just Xyz summoned using Xyz monsters? Woah!" said Hitch as Sunny's advanced knowledge and skills blew him away.
"Well, well…" muttered Flurry Heart as she and the others witnessed Sunny's advanced technique.
"Guess the girl does have some skill," remarked Phin.
"That is without a doubt. But I sense she couldn't have gotten that card in her deck along with the others without help," said Flurry, as she had a strange feeling her uncle might have influenced Sunny's deck.
"Next, I play the spell card, Magistus Vritra. Now I can return my Rilliona, the Magistus of Verre, from my graveyard. And then her effect activates when she's summoned. This allows me to add a 'Magistus' spell or trap card to my hand." Sunny made her choice as it slotted out for her to grab. "I then set two cards facedown and end my turn."
Turn 5: Athena (Hand 3)
"It's my move!" said Athena as she drew her card and looked at her hand before gazing up to peer at Sunny and her field.
Flurry told me to throw this duel and let Sunny win so we could study her tactics and find her weaknesses. But… she never said I had to make it easy on her.
"I summon Battlin' Boxer Glassjaw(2000/0)!" Out came a bulky boxer with tons of muscles, but its head guard was made of black glass. "And now I'm gonna activate the spell card, Orichalcum Chain!"
"Orichalcum what?" said Izzy as she had never heard of the card Athena played, as did the others.
"This chain gives me a missing link when I need it! So when I want to Xyz Summon, I can do it using one fewer monster," explained the Crystal Prep girl.
"Really?" responded Sunny.
"But, using this spell can be quite risky. If my chain is destroyed, you gain control of the Xyz monster that I summoned with it! But there's no way I'm going to let that happen, so do yourself a favor and don't even bother trying." said Athena with a smirk. "It's time to put my spell card into action. First, I overlay my Battlin' Boxer Glass jaw, and then, with my Orichalcum Chain's help, I can build the Overlay Network!" Athena's sole monster turned into an orb of light as a portal opened up. The orb was sucked in as the chain descended into the portal, resulting in a pillar of light to emerge. "I Xyz Summon, Heroic Champion - Claivesolish(2500/2000, OLU: 1)!" A massive armored warrior dawned in yellow with wings ejected from its back appeared as it wielded a massive sword, causing electricity to flow out. The chain that Athena placed appeared as a golden ring around its neck.
"This doesn't look good," said Hitch.
"Now I activate my Claivesolish's special ability. I pay Life Points until I only have 500 left. But doing so allows me to double my monster's attack!" stated the girl as her warrior powered up.
Athena's Life Points: 500-
"5000 attack points!" said Sunny in awe.
"Now… attack her Exosisters Magnifica! Oh, I forgot to mention. I activate Claivesolish's other ability. By using one overlay unit, my monsters gains the attack points of the monster its battles!"
"That's 7800!" exclaimed Sunny at the warrior's power.
"Slice and dice!" shouted Athena. Her swordsman leaped into the air and raised his sword high up before bringing it down on both sisters as they screamed in pain before exploding. The attack transferred as it headed toward Sunny, who was taken off her feet and crashed to the floor.
Sunny's Life Points: 3000-
"Sunny!" shouted Hitch, showing his concern for his best friend.
The girl stirred as she had some scuff marks on her body and clothes while sitting up. She looked at Athena, who had a smirk on her face, taking pride in knocking down the CHS girl.
"If I were you, I'd stay down. I end my turn with two cards facedown!"
Turn 6: Sunny (Hand 2)
"It's my move! I draw!" said Sunny as she drew her card. "I activate the spell card, Mystical Space Typhoon. With this card, I can destroy one spell or trap you control. So I choose your Orichalcum Chain!" A giant wind began to blow over the field as the card on Athena's field was destroyed, causing the golden ring around her monster's neck to shatter before teleporting to Sunny's field.
"I did it!" exclaimed the girl as she managed to control her opponent's monster.
"Perfect," muttered Athena with a sly smile.
"She might actually do it!" said Zipp.
While the others were pleased to see Sunny gain control of the monster, Mario had a suspicious look as he looked at Flurry Heart, who had a hidden smile.
"Now, it's time to finish you off with your own monster!" declared Sunny.
"No, I won't! I activate the trap, Antikythira Gear! I can use this if you attack me directly with two or more monsters on your field. It lets me take control of your non-attacking monster and put it in defense mode!" stated Athena as her card made ropes shoot out and headed toward Sunny's Rilliona.
"Not so fast! I activate my own trap card! Extreme Pressure Power lets me destroy one of my monsters and then draw a card from my deck!" said Sunny as she activated her own facedown.
"In that case, I activate my other facedown, Corkscrew Counter! Since you activated a card during the Battle Phase, I can be able to negate it and destroy it. Then you take 500 points of damage!" responded Athena.
"Sunny!" shouted her friends.
"I reveal my Solumn Judgement! I can negate and destroy your trap by paying half my Life Points. Looks, I just countered your counter!" said the girl.
Sunny's Life Points: 1500-
Athena gritted her teeth at how Sunny could outwit her strategy. Her Corkscrew Counter glitched out before Sunny's Rilliona disappeared, allowing the girl to draw a card before looking at her monster and thrusting her arm out.
"Keep up with your attack!" shouted the girl.
The warrior raised his sword and brought it down as it made contact with the girl. Athena was taken off her feet and fell to the floor with a thud.
Athena's Life Points: 0-
Winner: Sunny
The duel ended as the monster disappeared. Sunny suddenly fell to a knee as she breathed heavily. She looked at Athena before gazing at Flurry Heart as the girl began to clap slowly. The girl's friends came up behind her as they helped her up.
"Nice one, Sunny! You did it!" said Zipp, applauding her friend's victory.
"Awesome!" expressed Izzy.
"Thanks, everyone," said the girl as she turned to look at Flurry Heart.
The girl was talking with her group when she noticed Sunny looking at her. The Crystal Prep girl merely smiled, looking at the group before turning to leave with her friends in tow. The CHS group looked at the girl as it was clear they had a lot of work to do if they could even stand a chance against them. Mario kept his suspicious look as the boy figured out his cousin's plan and merely walked away.
Author's Note: Things continue to develop. It seems Flurry Heart had a plan cooking as she had her teammate throw the duel so that they could study and learn more about Sunny's tactics. And it not only worked, but it seems Mario himself has picked up on his cousin's plan. Either way, with Hitch and Izzy suffering back to back loses, and Sunny even having her own struggles, it's clear that Zipp's anger and mouth has started something she might not be able to finish and as a result, her friends had to pay the price. The road to the Friendship Games continues but so many things remain unclear.
