Chapter XXXVI The Victory Tour - Districts 8 to 4

District 8

Audrey couldn't believe how much her life had changed since Cara had been Reaped and what she had gotten herself into.

Not that she was complaining, she was fully on board with the rebellious activity.

Black markets existed everywhere. Like weeds, they refused to die forever. Everyone knew where to find them. Even the Peacekeepers, but for them it was just so they could get a cut of things. And here she was, purchasing things from a black market seller.

The seller hardly looked like a criminal, he was an elderly man who wore glasses and had calloused hands but a soft voice. He handed her the package. "Third editions, but still valuable."

"I'm sure."

Audrey left, keeping her hood up to obscure her face and protect her from the winter blasts of District 8. Audrey didn't know where they came from, but District 8 had a rather lively underground full of revolutionary literature. And she had found a partner from the most unexpected place to sell them.

Because screw the Capitol for what it did to Cara.

Audrey wanted to burn the whole thing down.

As did her "partner."

She met him nearby in an ally way. Cara's father wasn't the most imposing man, tiny and almost forgettable in face, but every time Audrey saw him now there was a fire in him that refused to die out.

"Any trouble getting them?"

"None." Audrey said, handing over the books and pamphlets. "Just another regular transactions."

"Thank you. I'd go, but.."

"I know." Audrey said. After Cara's death, her father had gone on a drunken rampage, nearly causing the Peacekeepers to arrest him. Word had gotten around though about his outbursts and Peacekeepers would occasionally check in. They'd especially do so today with the Victory Tour.

"Why do you need them today?" Audrey asked.

"The train is going to the other Districts. There's someone on that train that will spread them around, let other Districts see it." Mr. Whitlock informed her.

"Really? Who?"

"Don't know. It's all code names and stuff."

"Makes sense." Audrey said.

"You should get going, before you get caught."

They split off, Audrey returning to her book shop. It was an odd pairing, brought on by Cara's dad storming into the bookstore, first to grieve with another person who had known Cara, and then to incite a fire in Audrey. It had worked, and suddenly Audrey was a bonafide rebel. Her parents didn't know, nor would they ever if she could help it. But Audrey felt better doing it. She had cried for days after Cara was killed and now, even if it was small, she felt like she was honoring Cara.

'I'll never forget you.' Audrey thought.

There were plenty of idiots in District 8 who mourned for Chase Metro, Megan was certainly not one of them.

She had been horrified when her ex-boyfriend called her out during her interview, saying they were still together. Almost everyone picked up on it and immediately began bothering her. Her father told her to stay strong though, so she was quick to shut down any rumors. She told everyone she had broken up with Chase, which was met with shock by everyone.

Then it turned to anger when Chase died.

Megan was horrified by the sight, but many kids from school – who saw the terror that Chase was – were very happy he wasn't coming home. People paid Chase's family respects, Megan wasn't among them.

Victor Echeberría was on stage, giving a speech about the glory of the Hunger Games. Megan wished she had a chance to speak with the Victor, tell her thanks for kicking Chase in the balls during the Bloodbath. That had been a laugh. The audience watched Olivia in stony silence. There was anger over Cara, who had been so close to winning, but none of it was directed towards the Victor.

And many in the crowd knew it was the Capitol's fault anyways.

After the Tour, Megan went for a walk around the city. It was chilly in District 8, but Megan didn't mind. Her thoughts were keeping her occupied and the bite of the cold away. There had once been a part of her that thought her and Chase would be forever. That school couple who stayed together and had ten kids together. She was glad that wasn't the reality anymore. With what little she could do with her life in District 8, it was now her's to control.

She passed by an empty lot. A basketball court had once been there, where Chase would play and show off his skills. Two months ago it had been demolished and new apartment buildings were being built there. Something useful for the District.

Megan kept walking, hoping that like the courts, Chase would be forgotten as well.

DISTRICT 7

As with most days, it was quiet in the Ellery household. Six months later, the shadow of the 58th Hunger Games remained, an unwanted houseguest who refused to leave. Today, it had knocked on their door and was dragging them out.

Ola had died early in the Games, far earlier than anyone thought she would.

Mr and Mrs. Ellery, along with their last remaining child Jacks, walked into the Justice Budling with their heads held high. They would not be ashamed of Ola. In fact, despite their sorrows, there was a sense of pride amongst the Ellery that Ola had rejected killing. Ola's true self had shown through in that moment, refusing to bend to the winds of the Capitol.

Even if some of the District didn't see that. There had been a lot of elf satisfied comments at her death, but over the months those subsided. Rua was forgotten, though Ola's memory endured. There was some pride in that the Ellery's could take.

They endured the Tour in stoic silence. Victor Echeberría was quick with her speech, well versed in it after five Districts. Afterwards, they met her in the building.

"I didn't know her, but she seemed tough." The Victor told them. "The Careers tried to recruit her and she basically told them to go jump off a cliff. "

A hint of a smile formed on Mr. Ellery's face, "That's our girl." He said, to the nods of the remains of his family.

"Thanks for killing Hayley." Jacks told her. Victor Echeberría merely nodded, keeping a thought to herself, and said nothing more to them. Some polite words were exchanged with David's parents and then she was gone.

And the Ellery's were left behind, with only their memories.

After the Tour, Ned wandered through town, anger roiling inside of him. He had it under control these days, mostly, but his mood affected him still. At first, people had been sympathetic, but as the weeks turned t months, they expected him to move on. Even his own dad, who at first had been supportive, turned to strapping him after a particularly nasty blow up from Ned.

What could people expect though? David was dead, yet the world seemed to hardly care. The District certainly didn't. David's parents didn't even want to see him, claiming it was too hard. Everyone wanted to forget, engage in a cycle f de during the Games and then pretending that nothing was wrong until they rolled around next year.

Again, and again, and again. A cycle without end.

Ned didn't know what to do. He wanted to rebel, but how? It's not like rebels just left a sign out saying "Come join!"

He continued working the mill, day in and day out, the same thing over and over again. Occasionally he'd walk outside the bounds of town, through the forest routes he and David would run. Here the trees, plants, and animals still went about their days, unchanged since David had left. His best friend had come here to find peace, but all it did for Ned was build up his anger, twisting inside him like a gnarled root that couldn't be cut away.

He hated the Capitol.

He hated all of them.

He wanted them all dead.

And if a day ever came to get the Capitol back, he'd take it.

He'd make them suffer.

'Just for you, David.' He thought. 'I'd burn it all down and laugh in the ashes.'

DISTRICT 6

Cruelly, the day of the Victory Tour in District 6 was gorgeous. Clear skies, bright sunlight, and even the chill of winter seemed to subside a bit that day.

Things were less picturesque in the Remington home.

"Are we going to see Ama?" Dimitri asked his parents.

It was an old conversation. Too old for either of them to try and make their now four year old son understand. Again. After Amadeus died, both parents had sat Dmitri down to explain what had happened to his older brother. Somedays Dmitri understood. Others, not.

It appeared today was one of those days.

His wife was comforting Ama, something Mr. Remington couldn't do now. Mentally, he wasn't in the right headspace. He already felt he had failed one son, he couldn't let down another. Six months later, he and everyone else were still reeling from Amadeus' actions in the arena and the death he had caused.

What broke Mr. Remington was how casually Amadeus seemed to have done it. There was no emotion in his son as he poisoned the water or when he heard the poor Tributes' cannons. It was like how Victor Echeberría had described him, he was a murderer.

Yet, Mr. Remington knew that wasn't his son. He was still the young boy he held in his arms. The one who smiled at bad jokes. The one who cried and bawled his eyes out as he held his dad, breaking down over the abuse suffered from his mom.

'If I had been there sooner… could things have been different?' Mr. Remington thought.

It was time to go. Mr. Remington, his wife, and Dimitri left their home, all in sullen moods. Once outside, a small crowd had gathered, along with Peacekeepers, to escort them to the Justice Building. Amadeus' friends, Serafina, Damian, and Stephen, stood in the crowd in support. Mr. Remington was thankful for that. Amadeus wouldn't be forgotten.

"Mr. Remington, Amadeus' mother is already at the Justice Building." A Peacekeeper, rather unhelpfully, updated him. Mr. Remington tensed, as did his wife next to him, as neither of them wanted a thing to do with the woman. But there was nothing to be done. The Capitol demanded she be there.

They set out, not eager for what was to come.

Chuck Tarr had been on some tears in his life, but the day of the Victory Tour threatened to be the worst one yet.

Six months since his sister, Sarah, had died in the Games and Chuck still felt the anger boiling inside of him. He blamed the Capitol. He blamed Valdez. He blamed that stupid Escort who had reaped Sarah. But most of all, he blamed Amadeus, who had lead his sister down a dark path without a way off.

And now he'd have to stand there, smile, and listen to Victor Olivia Echeberría, who had accosted his sister like she was nothing and only won because of luck, give a speech about how great she was was compared to all the other Tributes.

His parents and him arrived at the Justice Building together, nobody eager for the day. District 6 was on a low boil, tempers still high after the 58th Games. Amadeus and Sarah and made it further than any District 6 Tribute had since before the 2nd Quell. How they did that was a matter of some debate though. There were many who felt Amadeus was justified in what he did, others felt he was a monster. In the end, nobody thought they'd truly know what to make of the man.

Yet everyone and their mother seemed to have the same opinion about Sarah; she was just some lackey too stupid to do anything but follow Amadeus around. It annoyed Chuck to no end. Sarah had been a pillar of strength in his life, always selfless and working hard for the entire family. She had been kind. She had tried to come home. And she was killed, viciously by a Career for the District.

And they couldn't be bothered to praise her.

They gathered in the foyer first, the Remington's already present. Amadeus father, step-mother, and younger brother were present and, standing further away, was Amadeus' biological mother. She was dirty, looking twice her age and like she had just crawled off a dive bar floor.

The two families said nothing to each other, but Chuck eyed the Remington's critically. If Amadeus had been a better partner, his sister would be alive!

Finally, it was time for the Tour to begin. The Tarrs and Remingtons were led on stage before the whole District and placed underneath images of their fallen family members. Shortly afterwards, the Mayor and Victor Echeberría walked out, the breath of an entire District seeming to hitch upon seeing her.

It was apparent to anyone with eyes that Victor Olivia Echeberría did not want to be in District 6. What people wouldn't know is that Peacekeepers had to practically drag her off the train. She took the stage and stood at the microphone uneasily, gripping her cards too tightly, as she forced out her speech. The District had very enigmatic feelings about Olivia, much like their thoughts on Amadeus that year, but at the end of the day she wasn't form 6 and that meant they got nothing from the Games that year.

The Victor finished her speech and left, not even bothering to wait for applause. Before she could run back to the train though, there were still the family meetings.

Olivia waited inside the Justice Building until the families arrived. She looked the Tarrs and Remingtons angrily, arms crossed. No one spoke, unsure where to start.

It started poorly.

"You were on TV with Ama!" Dimitri said. "You know my brother!"

"I did." Olivia replied.

"Is he in District 5 with you?"

Olivia's face went tight. "You should ask your parents." She said with an edge.

Amadeus' mom wasn't sugarcoating it. "Your brother's dead."

Mr. Remington nearly burst a blood vessel upon hearing that. Dmitri responded first though. "Dead? No he isn't! He's playing the Hunger Games!"

"And he lost. He was too weak and he died." Amadeus' mother said with a shrug, like she was saying she just crushed a cockroach.

"How dare you!" Mr. Remington shouted. Amadeus' mother was unimpressed though by her ex's outburst.

"You two couldn't even tell him?" She asked, enjoying their discomfort. "No wonder Amadeus turned out to be such a little pansy." She looked over to Olivia, leaning in. "I tried to give him some muscle, toughen him up. Boyfriends did to, nothing too bad, just spanked him a couple times. Nothing worked."

"You abused him." Mr. Remington spat.

"So it's my fault?" She roared, voice causing Dmitri to flinch. "You were the one in charge of him the past few years. He wasn't poisoning kids on my watch."

Victor Echeberría said nothing, absorbing everything in. She turned to the Tarrs, voice low. "I'm sorry about Sarah." She said.

Mrs.. Tarr nodded. "She… tried."

"She was tough. Always was." Mr. Tarr said.

"You could have saved her, you know!" Chuck suddenly exploded. "You should have stuck with them and you would have beat District 6! Or you could have used the train to kill Valdez!"

"Chuck-" his dad reproved.

"You're right. I could have." Victor Echeberría replied evenly. "But I didn't. And I don't regret it."

A silence fell over them. Chuck wasn't done though, angered by the Victor's tone. "I wonder who suffered more? The Tributes who got poisoned or Hayley when you fried her brains out?"

Victor Echeberría lip twitched. She spoke quickly, rage in every syllable. "Amadeus poisoned my District partner! Sarah went along with it too. She went along with everything he did, no questions asked! Not once did she ever try to back away or try to stop him or warn me! As far as I'm concerned, she's no better than Amadeus, in fact maybe worse because at least he could own up to the monster that he was."

"Shut up!" Dmitri cried. "Ama isn't a monster!"

"He was!" The Victor screamed back at the four year old, completely losing her mind. "Your brother was a cold, heartless monster and I'm glad he's dead so he can't hurt anyone else!"

Dmitri burst into tears, but the Victor wasn't done, turning to Amadeus' parents. "I trusted him! I sought him and Sarah out and I made them allies! I convinced Aleko to take them in, told him we could trust them! And I was played for a freaking idiot! Like a damn fiddle by some insane boy and a girl without any morals! And now Aleko is dead, Eddie is dead, and seven other Tributes died because of them!"

Silence engulfed the group again, except for Dmitri's tears. Nobody could think of anything to say to that. It was all mostly true. "But he was still my son…" Mr. Remington said, tears falling from his eyes.

"Oh give me a break…" Amadeus' mother laughed.

"And my sister!" Chuck continued. "And you let them die!"

"And I'll live with that choice every day of my life." The Victor said before spinning around and leaving them.

She was done with District 6, but never with Amadeus or Sarah.

DISTRICT 4

The Fischer family received a formal escort to the Justice Building, courtesy of the District and Peacekeepers. While Peacekeepers had to escort a Fallen Tribute's family to the Tour, the District government didn't need to hold a little parade for them.

But they certainly did. How else could District 4 commemorate their newest hero, Cean Fischer?

Sirena had become use to this behavior over the past few months. Cean had been turned into a certified star and the District was dedicated to making sure everyone worshipped him as such. In a year where their trained Tribute, Mara, did so poorly, Cean had a been a refreshing surprise and, to everyone's shock, had been the most effective of the Career Districts. 4 had certainly done better than 1 and 2 this year.

It was still shocking to watch people fawn over Cean, pretending to have known him. The Cean in the Hunger Games was certainly not the one Sirena had known. The quiet loner, weighed down by his dad and sister's deaths. Now, Cean was a certified badass. Everyone at the docks spoke of him with pride and the kids at school all wanted to emulate him.

She was still unhappy with him, especially with knowledge that he had a crush.. or something… on her. She hadn't told anyone, not even her best friends, but she had a horrific feeling that if Cean had been able to kill in the Games, who knew what he would have done upon leaving them.

Especially to her.

Part of her was glad he died.

Not that she would say that to anyone, most of all to her now step-mom. It was a secret that Sirena was taking to the grave.

Their little parade came to an end at the Justice Building and the Fischer's were escorted inside, where the Bonavich's, who had received little fanfare, were already waiting. Pleasantries were exchanged with the Mayor as they waited to go on stage, but the Mayor was far more interested in speaking to Sirena's parents. She hung back, standing next to Mara's sister.

"Sirena." She offered, holding out her hand. The girl looked at it cautiously and then accepted it.

"Elpis." She replied, shaking Sirena's hand softly. "You're Cean's sister?"

"Step-sister." Sirena corrected. "You?"

"Mara's half- sibling." Elpis said. "She loved to remind me of that."

"I'm sorry about your sister." Sirena said half heartedly. Mara had seemed pretty cruel, but she was still the girl's family.

Elpis shrugged. "Nothing I or anyone could have talked her out of." Elpis said. "Mara only lived for the Games. Sorry about Cean."

"Don't be." Sirena said, easing up. "He was kind of a creep."

Elpis chuckled. "Seems like Mara hated him. But, she hated everyone."

The girls kept talking, enjoying being around someone they could vent to. Eventually the families were escorted out of the stage and the Tour began. The Mayor began by giving a long spiel about how both Tributes helpless District 4 rise to the levels of 1 and 2, enamored with them. From a opposite sides of the stage, Elpis and Sirena gave each other looks and suppressed laughs.

The Tour was ok, if dull. Victor Echeberría never looked at the Fischer family, even afterwards when they had their meet up. Some platitudes were exchanged, clearly well practiced now by the Victor, and she left.

It wasn't good enough for Sirena.

"Hey!" She said, running after the Victor, who stopped. "Cean sucked. I'm sorry for what he did."

Victor Echeberría eyed her carefully, anger apparent in her eyes. "Doesn't bring anyone back." She replied tightly before leaving with the Peacekeepers.

The families were dismissed after that, Elpis and Sirena side by side. "What are you doing for the rest of the day?" She asked.

Elpis shrugged. "Probably just relaxing. School is back tomorrow so…"

"Wanna get crab nips by the docks?"

Elpis paused for a Sirena, and the smiled. A friend? Out of all of this? "Are you paying?" She laughed.

"If you get next time."

Both girls walked off, their minds leaving their horrible siblings behind.

More unused plot points!

1.) David was supposed to be a Bloodbath, offed by Valdez. Then he was supposed to be killed by Valdez when he bumps into him and Estelle post-Daisy's death and Estelle hesitates to kill him. In the end, he couldn't escape Amadeus.

2.) The original Bloodbath contenders were: Reko, Poe, Mara, David, Millie, Ruddy, and Pan.

3.)The arena for this story almost had a complete overhaul two weeks before Bloodbath when I read that the 10th Hunger Games arena featured tunnels and Lucy Gray using poison. I freaked out and thought that people might think this story was too close to plot points from BOSAS, which I had never read or watched! The substitute arena would have a large luxury residence skyscraper surrounded by ocean water and a drowned city. Maybe that'll do for the next SYOT…

4.) Sarah was supposed to kill Amadeus. Why? Well I never really figured out why lol. I nixed the idea though when they began interacting in the Capitol. I couldn't see them betraying each other.
