Chapter 22

Carson arrived with Bile and they came on horseback to go faster. Carson climbed the stairs, without even realizing that he was going up them two at a time... When he reached the door to the room, he was horrified, even as a doctor, he had never seen someone in this serious condition. There was a lot of vomit and a lot of blood, it had no color whatsoever. Nathan pulled her onto his lap to help Carson examine her.

-Carson, and I've seen this, it's digestive bleeding; I see the smell of the blood. My grandfather died from this...

-Yes Nathan! Assessing her head injury, he heard Nathan saying that her look was strange, it was a glassy look. Carson stimulated Elizabeth by proving pain so that she would react and open her eyes and when she did, Carson stopped breathing for a few minutes...

-I need to lay her down now. Rose bring her clean bedding and clothes quickly. Alien, I need you to leave for a moment... said Carson.

Alien looked at Nathan, I decided to obey.

-Rose could you go to your house, I need you to make a call and get Faith, I need intravenous medicine and medicine for brain trauma, and someone needs to get Faith as soon as possible because I need her help.

And so Rose ran away, with Alien close behind. Carson went and locked the door, looking at Nathan, he said:

-I know you're not married yet, but Rose wouldn't be able to see me doing what I need to do. I need to change her dress Nathan, this smell is only going to get worse. But I need to see part of her abdomen and maybe I need to do some procedure. As a groom I know you would take care of her and as a mountie you can help me with the procedures. I don't care what the gossips on duty will say, or the rules of society, I just want to save Elizabeth's life.

-Me too Carson, I can't live without my Lizbeth.

Elizabeth continued to vomit without stopping, a vomit of dark content with the presence of clots; Carson knew that he had given her certain medications that could trigger that bleeding. He placed her lying down, after he and Nathan changed her dress, they noticed her abdomen with a huge bruise, which was already completely purple, she was badly injured when she fell from the window and only now did they notice; But Carson was worried about something else...he re-bandaged his head, cleaning off all the blood that was dripping there. The few words she managed to say showed him that she was in a lot of pain in her head. Carson knew that the fall had been from a great height, for her two meters high was very high, in addition to the wound on her head, when she fell on a rock, she caused a TBI (traumatic brain injury). Carson knew that she had actually had a TBI because the pupils of her eyes were fully dilated and did not contract in response to light. She had dizziness, vomiting, intense headache, she had been showing the signs for more than twenty-four hours and only now was he able to find out and start medicating her. After the examination in the infirmary, he sent her home, with the recommendation that she return if something bothered her, but he now couldn't forgive himself...as a doctor he should have made a home visit and assessed her condition again. He needed to take care of her, he couldn't live if something bad happened to Elizabeth.

Nathan knew what was happening, he saw in Carson's eyes the seriousness of his fiancée's case.

Faith ran and entered the room, but did not allow anyone else to go up there.

In the room was Lee with little Jack in his arms, Rose, Bill, Abigail and Frank, they were in prayer and still didn't know how things were in that room; Alien sat at the door of the room, she loved Mrs. Thorton very much, she said prayers and cried a lot, "I can't lose another mother, protect her my Lord".

Inside the room, an intravenous infusion was placed in Elizabeth's arm and then with Nathan holding her, Carson and Faith began the surgery...a small incision was made in her head between the back of the neck and the middle of the back, where he placed a small straw and from there they drained black blood, Carson carried out the entire procedure while Faith administered sedation and controlled the cerebral perfusion pressure.

Nathan remained firm as a purple girl, he didn't let his feelings get in the way; his face showed nothing, but in his heart, he felt the pain of his Lizbeth, he would give his life for her.

The surgery went well, it was a four-hour procedure, but now she was stable, her vomiting had stopped, Faith helped Carson and Nathan change all the bedding and the patient's clothes.

She was motionless on that bed, her face was as white as paper. She was sedated, and Nathan asked:

-How long until she regains consciousness?

I don't know Nathan? It could be hours or days. I made a big mistake in not examining her more often, maybe she wouldn't get to that point. I don't forgive myself.

-Calm down, Carson. We know you would never allow her to be at risk. I trust you.

-But Nathan we have two problems to solve now.

-Say Carson.

-Firstly, if the news that you were here in the room gets out of this house, she will be judged by our city, and she will lose her job, as she will be considered shameless and the school committee and some parents will do everything to take away his right to teach.

-But Carson, is she sick?

Nathan was outraged, she didn't ask to be taken care of by him, she was unconscious.

-I know, Nathan, even though Faith and I are here, you can be sure that the gossips on duty will talk a lot, these types of people just wait for news so they can spill their poison, without thinking about the consequences. And another thing, Elizabeth will need a lot of help, after she wakes up she needs to rest for a few days and you know how stubborn she is. I think only you will be able to keep her quiet.

Nathan left the room thinking and making plans, he needed to clean up because the stench was horrible, but he needed to resolve some things urgently.
