CHAPTER 38
After a delicious snack, all the children went home.
Nathan hugged his wife, showing how proud he was. His daughter hugged him and went to make tea for everyone, she too was very emotional about everything that had just happened. She had always admired Robert, but now this feeling was much greater.
Little Jack, after hugging Uncle Bill and kissing him, ran into Nathan's arms...
- Daddy... Daddy...
Nathan lifted him up and the boy immediately kissed and caressed him. It was a pure love, a love between father and son.
Nathan's love for his son is an indescribable feeling, full of emotion and tenderness. When he carries his son in his arms, everything around him seems to disappear, and his heart is filled with deep, unconditional love.
His father's arms become a safe haven for little Jack and for Nathan, the feeling of carrying this fragile and precious being is something that touches the core of his soul. Every movement is made with extreme care, as if the whole world depended on those firm, loving hands.
While holding the little boy, Nathan feels the warmth of his body, hears his soft breathing and feels the beating of his little heart, which somehow becomes the sweetest melody he has ever heard. He looks into little Jack's eyes, which are still small and curious, and finds himself lost in an ocean of innocence and possibilities.
Every look, every smile, every sigh from this little boy is a blessing that fills a father's heart. Nathan looks up to heaven and talks to God, asking for strength on this journey and giving thanks for his family and this beautiful boy. He commits himself to protecting, caring for and guiding his son throughout his life, knowing that he will be his rock, his role model and his best friend. He is willing to make any sacrifice to ensure that his son has a bright future, full of love and opportunities.
Nathan explained to Elizabeth that his father was at the hotel, and that he was worried about them, but that he preferred to wait until he returned home, as he didn't know how she would accept him there with his family, and that he had decided to bring his father-in-law along.
Elizabeth looked at her husband and said:
- What's up, my handsome husband... you decided to bring Bill along to help in case I get angry?
- Do you think I'd be silly, my love? Of course I needed to bring reinforcements, I needed to assemble my battalion, I know you're a good fighter.
Bill smiled.
- We just want to see you happy, Elizabeth. You once told me that everyone needs a second chance in life, and that's when you took me by storm and changed me completely. At least try to do the same now.
She lowered her head, there was a lot of hurt there.
- How are Mom, Viola and Julia?
Willian knew she was trying too hard to talk about it, it hurt to see the pain and hurt her middle daughter felt.
- Your mother and Viola, they're still the same. I'm not going to lie to you... they don't even know I'm here and they wouldn't agree either. As for Julia, she ran away from home over a year ago and married Charles...
Willian noticed her smile, then her tensing up, and saw Nathan holding her hand, squeezing it tighter and looking into her eyes.
She felt her heart beating faster, the fear that her family would try to interfere with her husband or her daughter, or her marriage, was enormous.
Nathan squeezed her hand once more, and the warmth of his love began to take over her body. She was no longer alone... she took a deep breath, closed her eyes for a minute and gradually managed to calm down.
- Beth, my daughter. I've made a lot of mistakes, just like our whole family. I can't make them see their mistakes, each of us has to bear the consequences of those mistakes. It's taken me a long time to analyze, to know and to accept everything I've done to you and Jack. Your forgiveness won't be won today, I know that... but I'd like the chance to have you and my grandson in my life and, of course, your whole family.
- Dad, I really want to..., but I have to be honest with you. I'm afraid. Afraid that you just want to deceive me, using my love for you and that in the end you'll try to humiliate or do something to my husband and my children.
- Beth. I... how can you think that of me? I'm your father. Willian was indignant.
- Yes; you are my father. And that's why I'm so afraid. You're the same man who humiliated Jack Thorton for being lower class and for being a mountie. Who humiliated his family and laughed at his father killed in battle. You're the man who tried everything to make his daughter lose her job, even sending documents signed by yourself, talking about my "immorality with several men" and not being worthy of looking after the children's school life. You transferred Jack from here to a post far away, using your friendships and wealth and if it hadn't been for Uncle Wynn, we would have had to move from Hope Valle, because I was going to accompany him, no matter how bad that place was, in the midst of Indians and gangs to which you sent him. They welcomed me in my mourning..., but...
