Eddie shifted uncomfortably in her chair next to Jamie as she took a bite of her dinner. It was Sunday dinner once again and the family had gathered to reminisce about how their week went and to talk about the upcoming impeding birth of the triplets. Jamie and Eddie had found out weeks ago that they were having girls. Jamie of course was over the moon because now he had more girls to spoil. Putting his fork on his plate, he put a hand on Eddie's back when he saw her blow out a breath.
"Ed? You ok?"
Eddie nodded her head.
"I'm fine bub."
Jamie nodded but could see right through her. Eddie made a face and squeezed her eyes shut, dropping her fork onto the plate with a clang. She hadn't realized she was gripping Jamie's hand very tightly. She felt guilty that she hadn't told Jamie her water had broken earlier in the day. She thought she had time. But now she wasn't so sure. As the pain subsided, she opened her eyes to see Jamie looking up from his watch.
"That's every five minutes sweetheart. How long have you been having contractions?"
Eddie felt heat come to her cheeks as she looked at the faces around the table.
"Since early this morning. My water broke somewhere around 4am."
Instead of getting upset, he was calm and collected and nodded his head.
"Ok. Can you stand?"
Eddie shook her head no and stayed where she was at.
"No. But I feel like this first baby is ready to make her grand entrance into the world. She feels like she's between my knees."
Henry chose the moment to throw in his two cents.
"You know Francis, you were almost born in this house. Your mother almost had you right there in the sunroom."
Everyone at the table fixed a stare towards Henry. Jamie was doing his best to help Eddie get to her feet.
"Ed, look at me, try to breathe normally. That's it. Let's try to get up on your feet. Erin, Linda."
Linda and Erin didn't have to say anything. They were both on either side of Eddie, helping Jamie get her to her feet. Eddie groaned and tried to take a step forward, only shaking her head.
"Jamie I can't. I need to lay down. This baby really wants to greet the world."
Jamie could feel his mind begin to race. But it was Linda who brought him back to reality.
"Jamie, let's get her somewhere comfortable. This first baby will be here before the bus even gets here."
Eddie fixed a glare at both Linda and Jamie.
"I don't care if I give birth to this baby on the floor of the sunroom! I need to lie down! Ah! Oh god!"
By now, all four of them had barely made it into the sunroom when Eddie felt her knees go out from beneath her and all three holding her up had to help her lie down. Jamie reassured her as the three of them helped her lie down on the floor.
"Ok. Nice and easy Ed. Didn't plan on a home birth, did we? But we can't control where and when the baby comes. Erin? Can you get me some towels please?"
Erin nodded and scurried off towards the hall closet. Linda looked at Eddie and tried to keep her calm.
"Just keep breathing Eddie. Try and relax."
Eddie nodded but then looked at Jamie.
"Jamie? I need to push."
Jamie swallowed his nervousness and put his professional mask on. Erin came back with an armful of towel and set them on the couch behind Jamie. Pulling out a couple of pairs of gloves, he handed one pair to Linda while he pulled on his pair. He looked Eddie in the eye and placed a large towel over her knees.
"Ed, I need you to relax for a minute. Take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. I just want to check your progress."
Eddie nodded and bit her lip, breathing through her nose. She heard Jamie give his two cents.
"This first baby girl is already well on her way, she's ready to greet the world. I want you to give me three big pushes and her head will be out. Come on, I know you can do it."
Eddie nodded and let out a cry/groan giving another push. She felt like she wasn't getting anywhere until she heard it. Their first baby girl out of a set of triplets give her and Jamie a loud and strong cry. She heard Jamie's voice behind the towel.
"I've got her sweetheart! Who do you think it is? Keena? Or Kaitlyn?"
Eddie felt another sob bubble up and escape her mouth as Jamie held the screaming baby over the towel.
"Definitely Keena bub. Oh my god. Look at that full head of red hair! She definitely wants to be heard!"
Jamie could feel tears in his eyes and just as he was placing Keena on top of Eddie's chest after separating mother and daughter, he heard the doorbell. He was about to get up from his place in front of Eddie, but Frank walked past in the entryway.
"Stay there son. I've got it."
Jamie let out a breath as some EMT's came in rolling a stretcher. Eddie winced as the EMT's helped her onto the stretcher. Holding onto Keena, Jamie placed a kiss to her forehead.
"Welcome to the world Keena Elisabeth Reagan."
