For a woman whose life involved a lot of life and death decisions and action on the field when out in her capacity as the Senior Auror, and later the Director of the DMLE, being made to wait by the Portkey exit point without much to do had Amelia Bones tapping her feet in slight impatience. She had checked her briefcase three times to make sure the documents she needed for the upcoming meeting was there, fiddled twice with the thread on her uniform that resisted her repair attempts from the curse that hit her when she made Auror First Class, checked the etched runes on her uniform to make sure they were intact three times, and counted the tiles on the wall just to get her mind off work for a while. She was interrupted by a sigh by her side.
"When are they coming, Auntie?" Her niece Susan was seated by the chair, dressed quite smartly in her clothes that were modest, but still formed around her body enough to show she was growing up into a beautiful young woman that would turn heads, and reminding Amelia to buy a Beater's Bat for hitting boys if she had no wand to hex with. Amelia was about to answer when a sound drew their attention to a man a little younger than Amelia coming towards them with a young woman the same age as Susan by his side.
"Sorry for the wait, we got delayed by the lockdown coming on, and some people who insisted on getting my opinion on certain matters." The man huffed as he straightened out his suit.
"Anything worth noting?" Amelia's query got a handwave by the man.
"I will tell you later after we leave the ministry, we are running late as it is. We better leave before we get delayed any further by people trying one last time." The man moved to the exit point with the others following suit. The guard who was waiting on them looked relieved that they were finally moving and held out a rope for them to grab hold on.
"Cyrus Greengrass, Amelia Bones, Susan Bones and Daphne Greengrass? Two way trip to the Pacific Consulate?" The guard asked to confirm their details before continuing. "You four were cutting it close. It is leaving in 2 minutes."
"Blame the Kaiju." The man let out a very frustrated sigh while grabbing the rope, the rest spacing themselves to do the same. "They have been appearing quicker these days."
"I hear you, governor. This is what, the fifth time of the month?" The guard shook his head before checking the old watch. "Okay, leaving in 10 seconds. Brace yourselves." The group gripped the portkey tightly and braced themselves for the travelling process, and soon felt their navels being pulled and spun about with the scenery moving around them before they dropped unsteadily on solid ground with a man dressed in a decidedly military type of muggle uniform standing nearby in an area very different from where they just left. For one, it had a big window showcasing the ocean in the distance with several palm trees swaying lightly and some obelisks giving out pulses of light to a barrier outside.
"14:00 Portkey Arrival from Magical Britain. Cyrus Greengrass, Amelia Bones, Susan Bones and Daphne Greengrass." The man called out with a deep and firm tone that would tolerate no nonsense, confirming Amelia's theory that he was related to law enforcement. "Welcome to the Eastern Waypoint for the Pacific Consulate. Your next portkey transfer will be within the hour."
"We are not there yet?" Cyrus asked with slight disbelief and impatience.
"The Pacific Region is a hotspot for Kaiju attacks and for criminals trying to cross the region for smuggling. We have to make sure people coming through don't get a free ride to the minister or the high-ranked officers." The guard raised an eyebrow. "And we know plenty about your country's issues with terrorists."
"We understand." Amelia nodded her head and partially did it to stop Cyrus from speaking something that would jeopardise their mission for this meeting. They really needed support for this after the absolute screw-up Fudge had been doing to their ministry just to maintain control and access to his money bags, along with Dumbledore's intent to keep matters in-house. "May we know the procedures and how soon we can get there?" The guard opened his mouth when a klaxon alarm rang out in the facility.
"Alert! Alert! Kaiju sighted in the vicinity of Eastern Waypoint. Category Level: 2. Numbers: 5. All personnel and visitors are to make their way to the bunkers in an orderly fashion! I repeat, Kaiju sighted in the vicinity of Eastern Waypoint. Category Level: 2. Numbers: 5. All personnel and visitors are to make their way to the bunkers in an orderly fashion!"
"5 Category 2s!" Cyrus hissed as he grabbed hold of his daughter to keep her close with Amelia doing the same with Susan to assure her. Category 1 Kaijus were already hard to deal with for normal wizards, but Category 2 and above Kaijus need to have specialised teams to distract and draw away if not take down. And the Pacific Consulate had 5 Kaijus coming at them at once!
"Oh great, this is what, the eighth time this month?" The four turned to face their guard who incredibly looked bored at the news. "Oh well, follow me to the bunkers, I will get you to safety."
"How are you not panicking?!" Susan asked with a slightly higher pitch than normal. The guard looked at her with a bored expression and a raised eyebrow as he moved them out of the room.
"Young lady, we have Category 2s attacking us en-mass for years with the odd 3s. On average, we have three strikes per week. Almost all in the Pacific Rim Academy trained to get rid of the Kaijus one way or another." The guard explained as they made their way to the nearest bunker where people were queuing. It was also clear who were the local denizens and who were the guests with their behaviours and reactions towards the news of the Kaijus attacking the consulate. The latter were panicking and trying to force their way in while the former were slightly tense but otherwise calm enough to help the staff handle the panicking guests.
"In addition, the entire region around the Pacific is layered with multiple barriers, both physical and magical. And much of the Consulate and living districts are in domes and beneath the ocean so we do not have to worry about attacks unless they head for the openings or bore through rock, and even then they are heavily reinforced and guarded to ensure they are forced into a corner." The guard continued explaining while scanning some identification to grant him and them access to the bunkers. "This way please."
The group followed the guard with Amelia looking about the place with a critical eye and some reluctant acknowledgement for their security. They were certainly more equipped to handle Kaijus and possible human attackers if the number of wards they had just passed through this corridor alone were of any indication. The walls themselves appeared to be reinforced heavily and were a lot thicker than standard walls to support the weight, and they have different means of communication with each other.
"Here we go." The guard brought them to a room that was not yet occupied, lightly furnished with a window showing what was going on outside. "Please stay in here until they sound out the All Clear. I will return shortly after I get the details on the situation." With that the guard left the room, leaving them to their devices. The adults went to check the room a little before moving to the window to see what was going on while Susan sighed in her seat.
"Long day?" She turned to look at Daphne who sat next to her, looking as much a supermodel as she would on regular days in their school, with her dark hair pouring down her back like a veil while dressed in her two-piece suit with a thigh high pencil skirt and dark stockings.
"Probably not as bad as yours." Susan noted the slight strain around Daphne's jawline and eyes. "Your father said you were held up." The dark-haired woman sighed as she sat next to her friend.
"Let's just say that parents of a few mutual acquaintances have been pushing my father for his thoughts regarding certain bills to be introduced, and earlier with the lockdown, raised the topic of contracting me to one of their sons." Her expression said it all about what she thought about it. "Father has been dealing with the requests for quite a while now, and they have been ramping up the pressure when I had finished my OWLS early with Outstandings." Susan nodded in sympathy.
"I know what you mean. Auntie has been dealing with this for a while herself. There have been a few people asking about me, and she is not happy with any of them. She even muttered about buying a Beater's Bat to get them off me." Susan huffed as she looked down at her healthy chest with a minor glare. "Not helped when most of their sons or heirs keep looking at me based on these."
"Didn't Longbottom come to you on that?" Daphne's query had Susan wincing.
"He is fine and all, but his grandmother has been listening to Dumbledore for a while now, and she seems intent on getting Auntie to agree to a contract for the backup Boy-Who-Lived." Susan sighed heavily while slumping further. "And I do not recognise Neville lately. He used to be a sweet if not nervous kid, but now he is acting a little like Malfoy and Weasley in one package." Daphne shivered at that description.
"No offence, that is not a good image. He has better manners than Weasley and does not go around leering at girls like those two. They keep making me want to take a bath, and Tracey is also thinking of hexing them." Daphne answered. "And I will have to hold judgement on Longbottom when I see him next time."
"As long as he is not acting like those two or Smith trying to get into my room at night, that is fine I suppose." Susan sighed.
"Is that so?" The two turned to find their guardians back to them, Cyrus being the one who asked with narrow eyes. "Looks like I need to have a chat with a few young men when we return from the trip."
"Leave Smith for me." The expression on Amelia's face could be described as murderous when she heard about Zacharias Smith's attempt.
"Well, hopefully this visit can help alleviate some of the issues." Susan tried to diffuse the mood. The next alarm did a better job at that.
"Alert! Alert! 4 Category 2s have been defeated! Last Category 2 is currently engaged in combat with assault teams. A new Kaiju has arrived from the rift and is heading towards the Eastern Waypoint. Category Level: 3. All non-essential personnel are to move to the bunkers and secure the bunkers! Repeating alert! Category 3 Kaiju has arrived from the rift and is heading towards the Eastern Waypoint!"
That message drew fresh screams from those outside the room, while Cyrus and Amelia hugged their daughter and niece separately with paling expressions. It was one thing to have multiple Category 2s coming out to attack, but to have a Category 3 Kaiju coming out shortly after was a disaster. Entire nations would crumble from their power unless one were to employ multiple wizards to attack just one, or even use Fiendfyre in hopes of killing it, only for it to come out of the flames like the devil itself. And that was not going into the fears of a Category 4 coming out to play.
In the entire history of mankind and magic, there have only been two Category 4s released to invade the world, and in both cases, no one has been able to get rid of them properly until they left the world.
There was a reason why Atlantis, Magical Alexandria and the magical capital of Pompei were destroyed.
"Seriously, what is with our luck?" Cyrus groaned at the situation befalling upon them. "We need to get out of this place!"
"You can't." They turned to find the guard entering the room and walking up to them rather calmly in the situation, with a tightness around the eyes and jaws to show his stress. "Part of the safety regulations include anti-apparition to avoid possible sabotage from within. Depending on the situation though, we can drop it but that may not be necessary."
"How are you this calm?" Daphne's voice was getting a little shrill at the moment. "We have a Category 3 coming here for Merlin's sake!"
"Don't worry, we will be getting through this. Sure, today is a sucky time for your first visit to the Pacific Consulate." The guard shrugged carelessly before smiling. "But you are in for a real treat. Jaeger Teams Gipsy and Striker are already here to intercept, and they are a couple of the best to deal with Category 2s and 3s. And if what I heard on the radio is true, you might see someone very special later dealing with the number 4." He paused to look out the window. "Ah, there we go."
They turned and paled at the sight of the monster that was making its way towards them. Despite it being miles away, its size seemed to make the distance negligible and towered over them with the glowing blue veins that marked its nature. It was moving about on its four limbs that were heavily armoured with spikes protruding out of its back, with its tail having a bony attachment that had a mace at the end. Its head resembled a cross between a wolf and a dragon, and it kept moving the head about with its long neck, behaving much like a snake seeking prey to hunt. And more disconcerting were the eyes that seemed fixed on their spot as though it was aware that they were there, with the mouth open to reveal rows of sharp teeth in a manner like it was leering at their fear.
At least until a few bolts of lighting and fire hit the head, making it roar in irritation at the disturbance as it turned to face the two groups of people who had appeared on the beach far from them and began bombarding the monster with different attacks. The guard did something to the window to make it wider and to magnify on certain spots to show two pairs from both groups actually flying towards the Kaiju without any flying apparatus with swords at the ready.
"Are they insane?!" Cyrus gaped at the suicidal manner they were going at it.
"Jaeger Teams like Gipsy and Striker are the frontline fighters, they will take the action directly to the monsters." The guard explained as they watched the attackers move about swiftly to avoid the physical strikes by the limbs and flame attacks from the Kaiju. One of the attackers, a small girl that was comically dwarfed by the giant Zweihander, was using said blade to hack away at the toes of the back leg like a butcher, and doing a fine job at it. Another attacker, a young male this time, had what appeared to be chakram blades flying about him and using a pair attached to his legs to scale up the monster while cutting it up along the way, making the Kaiju roar in irritation at the nuisances stopping it from going towards the waypoint. It hunched a little before the spikes on its back started to glow brightly. "Oh, hold on a moment." The guard took up the walkie-talkie to speak into it. "Alert the Barrier Crew that they better up the shields, Kaiju is going to fire off ballistics."
The British guests were confused by his words, but whatever he said meant something as the space outside the window appeared to shimmer briefly before the Kaiju let out a roar to fire off the spikes from its back and send them straight at them. Cyrus and Amelia used their bodies to cover them from the incoming attack when they hit the barrier and disintegrated into dust. The Kaiju roared its displeasure at the barrier and proceeded to bulldoze its way towards the building they were in while ignoring the attacks being laid on it. With a giant leap, the Kaiju gripped both its front legs in a manner similar to clenching arms and sent it crashing against the barrier, the aftershock sending the humans crashing to the ground while its skin bubbled and cracked from the barrier stopping its assault on the waypoint. The blue blood that came out from the wounds splashed on the ground, eating into the earth upon first contact with it and making the British very glad to be away from it.
"Shouldn't there be other defences?" Amelia's query got answered by bolts of light hitting the Kaiju head on and forcing it back a few feet, a feat that was quite remarkable due to its size. But it was merely pushing it back a little and while the two Jaeger Teams were making obvious progress on the monster, they were not stopping it completely. They were merely delaying the inevitable result of the Kaiju destroying the barrier and then the building, and ending their lives.
At least, that was until the clouds split open to let a giant pillar of light descend from heaven to effectively smash its head into the ground.
"What in Merlin's Sagging Balls was that!" The others could forgive Cyrus's outburst as they too were shocked by that attack that was able to knock a Kaiju flat on the ground. The Kaiju in question was certainly feeling the pain as it pushed itself off the ground while shaking its head, the veins glowing brightly about its neck as it looked about and growled out in aggression. It got the answer in the form of another beam that it tried to block this time, only to be pushed further back from the waypoint with a third beam appearing from a giant magic circle that was formed in front of it. Then the image on the window shifted to show someone heading straight for the head with what appeared to be a staff in their hand to deliver a hard punch to the head that sent it back further.
"Did that person just punch a Kaiju in the face?!" Daphne had to gape at the ludicrousy of the manoeuvre. Something that appeared to be validated when the Kaiju roared before swinging its head hard and violently to knock the new attacker back into the air. That person flipped about before descending to the ground and dropping into a three-point landing position hard enough to make a small crater. Up close, the British could see that person was a young man roughly the same age as the girls with dark hair tied into a ponytail, dark tactical clothes that were functional with armour about the limbs, and a wizard's staff that had seen a fair amount of fighting. He stood up as the Kaiju let out another roar that blasted wind at him, causing both the clothes and hair to flutter and him to briefly turn to avoid the sand, and that was when they saw his face that had the girls slightly blushing unconsciously and the adults gaping.
"James?" Amelia spoke out at the sight of his face.
"No, it can't be. James is dead, and the eyes are wrong." Cyrus spoke with wide eyes.
"Don't know who you are referring to, but you can relax now." The guard spoke as he continued watching the action. "That is one of the Arcanes taking the battlefield."
"Who?" Susan asked at that statement. She got her reply from the alert.
"All personnel be advised. Arcane Septem has entered the battlefield and is assisting Teams Gipsy and Striker with the Category 3. All barriers are to be strengthened and available fighters assist with protection of the waypoint."
"You guys wanted good fighters to help with your problems in Britain, right? Well, you came to the right place." The guard gave a smirk as they watched the young man raise his staff to conjure up multiple magical circles in the air to fire off a torrent of beams that forced the Kaiju back before he vanished from their sight only to appear in front of the Kaiju to conjure what had to be the biggest blade in history to cut the monster's head off with one swing without much effort, thus ending the threat for good. The window zoomed in on the wizard as the corpse hit the ground with a loud thump that sent dust and debris flying about, displaying his face that had a sharp jaw, a pair of emerald green eyes and what appeared to be an old faded scar on his forehead.
"Welcome to the Pacific Rim, the birthplace for Kaijus and their hunters, Jaegers and Arcanes."
Author's Notes:
To be honest, this was meant to come out instead of the Pacific Academy idea, but I was having issues writing this one out, then it ended up splitting into two different versions. This version as you can see is inspired by the movie that features giant robots beating the absolute shit out of giant monsters and being awesome at it. But I am changing the hunters to be professional wizards and witches who could take on Kaijus and other criminals. And of course Dumbledore is the bad guy still. "Shrugs carelessly"
