Time: 2 A.M.
Flim Flam's eyes snapped open immediately in the dead of night. It wasn't the first time he had that nightmare, and it certainly wasn't going to be the last.
"Are you awake, Scrappy?" the young boy whispered in the dark of the night.
He waited for an answer, but there was none from the sleeping puppy.
He reached over and pet the top of Scrappy's head a few times before he opened his eyes and rolled over, slightly yawning.
"What?" Scrappy whispered, rubbing his eyes.
"Can I talk to you about something?" Flim Flam asked.
The puppy stared at him.
"Flim, it's 2 in the morning."
"And? You stayed up until 2 so that you could watch 'The Son of the Bride of the Ghost of Frankenstein' with me," the boy reminded him.
Scrappy rolled his eyes and sighed.
"Fine, you got me there. I'm here. What's up?"
Flim Flam laid there in silence for a moment, not knowing exactly how this would come out.
"Do you ever... think about your family?" he finally questioned.
"Well, I've been living with my Uncle Scooby for years so of course-"
"No," the boy interrupted. "Not your uncle. I mean, like, your parents."
The puppy's eyes widened and he paused for a moment.
"Oh..."
His head nodded a little.
"Sometimes I think of my mom and what she's probably doing in New York. I don't see her a lot since I'm always with my uncle. It wasn't long after I was born that I left her to join my uncle on his adventures, but yeah, I miss her," he said.
"That's sweet! What about your dad?"
Scrappy's eyes wandered toward the clock next to his bed.
"About who could he be? Sure. I've never met him. Mom never mentioned him and neither did any other of my family members. I don't even know his name or have any idea where he could be," he confessed. "So, I've got nothing to go on, but yeah, I do think about who he could be sometimes and why I've never seen him, why he's not in my life and never tried to be." He then turned his attention back to his friend. "Why are you asking? Are you thinking about yours?"
The child sighed and turned toward him.
"Yeah, kind of," he admitted. "I uh... I had a dream about them." A frown slowly faded into his face.
"Was it a nightmare?"
Flim Flam gulped.
"Yeah."
"You wanna talk about it, Flim?" Scrappy offered.
"I don't know if I wanna..." the boy responded. "I've never told anyone before, except Vince."
Scrappy nodded his head. It made sense that Vincent knew what went on first, as he was the first person Flim Flam got close to before meeting the others.
"Well, it's okay if you don't want to right now." The puppy turned over and lifted his blanket up. "Let's just go back to sleep."
"Wait!" Flim Flam whispered, making Scrappy pause for a moment. "I think I can talk about it..."
Scrappy turned his attention back to his friend, raising an eyebrow.
"But, just promise me you won't tell anyone, okay Scrap?" Flim Flam asked. "I don't think I can bring myself to talk about this with the others, at least not for a while."
The puppy nodded, and gave Flim Flam a hug.
"Sure, Flim. Your secret's safe with me," he told him before pulling away.
Present Day
That night kept playing in Flim Flam's head over and over again, no matter how hard he tried not to think about it.
Telling Scrappy about what happened with his parents was already difficult enough, and even telling Vincent wasn't easy either. So, how would he be able to let the others know? How could he look them straight in the eyes while telling them about the moment that changed his entire childhood and gave him so many nightmares for years to come?
He already began to suspect that everyone was worried about him, given his attitude, so he knew he had to tell them something soon.
And this was one thing he couldn't bring himself to lie about, even though he dreaded having to talk about it.
"Promise me you'll never leave me?" he remembered asking Scrappy that same night, and the puppy had promised.
But Scrappy had disappeared later that same year, and even though Flim Flam knew he would never run away intentionally, he had his doubts. At times, it felt as if the promise had been broken. He didn't want to, but at some points, he had lost hope that he would ever see the puppy again.
If he really lost his parents and then Scrappy for good, who says it isn't possible for him to lose the others too forever one day?
And then he would be alone again...
He shut his eyes and gulped in fear at the thought of it.
Losing them would be even worse than losing his parents. Losing Scrappy was already worse than losing his parents.
Was it his fate to always lose someone? Vincent had wondered the same about himself in the past quite a few times, and everyone knows that wasn't true. But what if it was true for the teenage boy instead?
His mind wandered with all these thoughts as he kept his gaze on the ground while traveling with the others.
"You know if you want, I could make you some smores later," Daphne told him. "Just for you. But only for today."
Flim Flam snapped out of his thoughts as he heard her voice and smiled.
"Just make sure Shaggy and Scooby don't get anywhere near them," he replied.
"Oh don't worry, I will," she chuckled.
He laughed a little at that as well.
Suddenly, there was a chill in the air and most of the gang shuddered as they felt it.
Asamad's eyes widened.
"That's her..." he realized. "Marcella."
And soon enough, the green mist slowly appeared all around them.
