Chapter 1: Sick
In the state of Illinois, there lived a family, the Shaws. There was Zeke, his wife, Honey, and their two kids, 8-year-old Sophie and 2-year-old Zack. They had a pretty good life, in a comfortable little house.
Zeke worked as a mechanic, and Honey worked as a beekeeper and sold her honey and honey products. They were a happy family, and soon they were going to be moving to a new city, because Zeke got a job offer.
Honey and Zeke had went to the new city, and picked out a nice reasonably priced house, and a school for Sophie. The move was going to be taking place in a couple months, and the family was getting ready for it.
But then, Honey began feeling off. She developed a cough, and started to feel tired. But Honey just brushed it off as stress and possibly allergies.
One morning when Honey and Zeke woke up, she was still coughing. After brushing her teeth, washing her face, and even showering Honey still didn't feel like herself. As she was getting dressed, she continued to cough.
"(Coughs)". "You okay, Honey? You don't sound good." asked Zeke.
"I'm still not feeling that good. I thought this cough would've gone away by now."
Honey tried to put on her favorite pearl necklace, but was struggling to. Zeke being the good husband he was helped her, and then put his hand on her forehead.
"Your head's slightly warm but not burning so you're not terribly sick."
"I'll probably make an appointment to see the doctor later this week."
"I'll help you with that. I'll get the kids breakfast while you get ready."
"Thanks, Z. (Coughs)."
Zeke left the bedroom, and went to Zack's nursery.
"Hey there, buddy." he greeted.
"Dada." Zack said, reaching out to him.
"Ready for breakfast?"
He picked him up, and left the room. Then he knocked on Sophie's door.
"Sophie, breakfast will be ready soon."
The door opened, and Sophie peeked her head out.
"Okay, Dad. I'll be down in a minute."
And with that, Zeke went downstairs with Zack. He got to work on cooking breakfast, and Sophie came down. Upstairs, as Honey finished getting dressed, she coughed again. She coughed so much, that she had to get a tissue.
As she coughed into it, but when she looked at the tissue she gasped. She quickly grabbed her phone, and texted Zeke to come upstairs. When Zeke saw the message, he headed back upstairs.
"Sophie keep an eye on your brother." he told her.
"Okay, Dad." Sophie replied.
"Fifi." Zack said in his baby voice.
Zeke came back to their room, and he saw Honey looking worried.
"Honey, what's wrong?" he asked.
"Uh, Zeke I think I'm sicker than I thought." Honey told him.
"What happened?"
"I was coughing into a tissue, and then I saw this."
She showed him the tissue that had speaks on blood on it. Zeke's eyes widened.
"Oh no, this could be serious. Finish getting dressed, I'm taking you to a doctor today."
"Right."
Not wanting to worry their kids, they quickly had their breakfast, dropped them off at school and daycare, and then went to the hospital.
They went to the emergency room, checked in, and waited. The two held hands, as they waited until finally they were called. In an examination room, Honey was looked over by a doctor and answered questions she was asked.
After going over her symptoms and doing some tests and scans the doctor came back.
"Well, Honey I have your test results." she informed.
"What is it?" Honey wanted to know.
"What's wrong with my wife? Why is she coughing blood?" Zeke asked.
"I'm going to put your minds at ease right now by saying you don't have cancer."
"That's a relief." breathed Honey.
"Thank goodness." added Zeke.
"The tests revealed you have TB."
"TB? What's that?"
"It's short for tuberculosis. It's an infection of the lungs."
"Is there anything that can be done?"
"There are antibiotics you can take that'll cure the infection."
"Well then give us a prescription and I'll go pick them up."
"Actually Mr. Shaw, the medicine can take a while to work. Honey it's been we admit you to the hospital."
"Admit her to the hospital? But we're about to move to another city soon. I'm just supposed to leave my wife here?"
"Zeke, please calm down. But it's true doctor."
"Hmm, well which city are you moving to?"
Zeke told the doctor where they were moving.
"Well you're in luck, I happen to know a doctor at the hospital where you're going that specializes in tb care. We can transport you there, and that way your family can still visit you, Honey."
"How long will I be in the hospital?"
"Yes how long?"
"Well since you only have a mild form of tb, you'll have to be in the hospital for about say a month and a half to be on the safe side."
"A month and a half? I don't know how Sophie will react to this."
"I assure you Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, that this is the best and most effective way to get this cured."
"Zeke, I think we should listen to her."
"Well, I do want you to get better Honey"
"So do I. And this does sound like the best way to do it."
"Then we best break the news to the kids."
Back home, Honey packed a suitcase for enough supplies for a month and a half. Zeke had gone to pick up the kids, and Honey was going over in her head how to tell Sophie what was going on. Zack was only 2, so he wouldn't fully understand what was going on.
When Zeke and the kids came home, Zeke put Zack in his room and brought Sophie to their room.
"Mom, Dad what's going on?" she wanted to know.
"Sophie, as you know your mom's been coughing a lot lately, and it turns out she's got TB." Zeke explained.
"TB?"
"It's an infection in my lungs." Honey told her.
"But what does that mean?" Sophie wanted to know.
"I'm gonna have to be in the hospital for a while, sweetie." Honey replied.
"Are you gonna be okay Mom? Are you gonna die?"
"I'm not going to die, Sophie. I'm gonna be okay."
"How long are you gonna be there?"
"About a month and a half."
"But what about the move?"
"Your mom will be transferred to a hospital in the new city, so she'll be close by." Zeke explained.
"But...I'm gonna miss you." Sophie told her mother, sadly.
Honey put her hands on her daughter's shoulders.
"I'm gonna miss you too, Sophie. But why don't you take this?"
She took off her pearl necklace, and put it around Sophie's neck.
"You're giving me your pearls? But you love this necklace, your just as protective of it as your purse."
"They won't do me justice while I'm in the hospital. Besides I'll need someone to keep them safe for me. Can you do that?"
"I suppose so. I can keep your purse safe too, you know Zack likes to dig in it."
"That's nice, but it's coming with me."
"Okay. But I'll keep your pearls close Mom, I won't let anyone mess with them. If I do a good job will you finally let me get my ears pierced when you get out of the hospital?"
"I'll think about it."
Then Honey and Zeke went to go get Zack, and Sophie went to her room. She couldn't believe what was happening. Her mom was so sick that she needed to go to the hospital for longer than a month?
After Honey was packed, the family piled into the car and drove to the hospital. Honey was quiet the whole way, and glancing at her kids in the back. Zeke noticed this, and held onto her hand, and squeezed it to comfort her.
When they arrived at the hospital, they parked, and all went inside. Honey checked into the hospital, and the doctor who examined her earlier escorted her and her family up to the patients' ward. After getting her a room, it was time for the rest of her family to leave.
Honey hugged Zack goodbye, and then said goodbye to Sophie. They two hugged each other tightly.
"I love you, Sophie." Honey told her.
"I love you too, Mom. Please get better." Sophie replied.
Honey then hugged and kissed her husband.
"We'll see you in the new city, babe." he said.
"Same here. Keep an eye on things."
"Love you."
"Love you too."
And with that, the three left the hospital, leaving Honey.
