"Have you ever been in love?" Harvey blinks a drowsy eye open at Donna's question.
His mind's hazy post sex and a long tiring day at the office. He doesn't want to be a typical Y chromosome but he had definitely been dosing off with Donna's fingers carding through his hair, his own hand limply across her waist. He frowns recalling her words, not making any sense.
Unlike him, Donna immediately catches on to his confusion. "I mean, before now. Have you ever been in love? Said it to a highschool sweetheart? Maybe a," Donna smiles coyly to herself as she trails her hand up his chest, snickering to herself "age appropriate female Ms. Garfield?"
Harvey chuckles lowly at the rib, not surprised shes already using the Garfield anecdote as ammo. He pauses for a second, thinking over her question.
"I never said it outloud. Not for real. Everything with my mom just… tainted it. Said it to my 3rd grade crush does that count?"
Donna squeezes his waist lovingly laughing at his attempt to lighten the mood. "Have you ever felt it before?"
Harvey stiffens slightly against her. He feels like this is a trap. If it was anyone else, he'd almost immediately be feeding them a line, dodging the questions with sweet talking them. But this was Donna, shes different. He knows that she doesn't mean to stir things up, her mind just works in mysterious ways, she was just curious, always wanting to unveil more about people, and he knows he's specifically a favorite of hers to unravel. And tonight was meant to be all about them, uncovering more about each other.
So he releases a breath, calming down and edging closer to Donna, caressing her shoulder and down her forearm till he links their arms together against her stomach. "Closest I ever felt it with was with Scottie." Harvey makes sure his eyes are on her as she nods reassuringly, not phased at all by his truth. Theyre both adults, both lived long and lively pasts. Shes not naive enough to think shes his f-
"I've only ever been in love with you, though." Donna feels her breath hitch and eyes widen just the slightest bit at his comment.
She tilts her head a little unbelieving despite the flutters in her stomach succumbing to his truth.
"C'mon," he teases her, surprised at her disbelief. "How can you not have known that?" He marvels at how she knows everything and yet this, the most obvious factoid about Harvey specter, arguably known by everyone from his close friends to mortal enemies- goes over Mighty Donna Paulsen's head. Her cute pout of confusion brings an even wider grin on his face. He pecks her forehead softly wanting to rid her furrowed brow.
"Well, I- but" Harvey kisses her properly smiling through it slightly as Donna falters a second before responding eagerly. He keeps it short, wanting to tease her some more. "Go ahead, keep stumbling. I'm liking this new trend where you're lost for words because of me."
Donna sighs finally gathering her wits about her. "Harvey," She's about to ask for an explanation through a lecture, he can hear it in her cadence and he beats her to it. "Donna, I've never been in love before you. I know I haven't because all the women I've been with have never made me feel so… content. Happy. Sure, some made me happy at the moment, or feel good but," he shrugs as he keeps caressing her cheekbone lovingly. "None of them ever made me feel," Harvey swallows down his hesitance at showing his vulnerability. "Safe. You make me feel so safe. Like I can just be me and that's enough. And no one's ever made me feel as much as you do. Of everything. Love, lust, happiness, annoyance, jealousy - any of it. All of it."
Harvey smiles wistfully as Donna's eyes water slightly, finally believing him.
"You're such a sap." Donna hoarsely responds before kissing him soundly and nuzzling her head in the crook of his neck.
He thinks they're both about to succumb to sleep when she speaks up again, her breath and soft tone tickling the side of his neck.
"I've said it a few times. I've felt it a few times with various boyfriends." Harveys bracing himself for the truth of the matter. Donna's had more serious relationship than he has, and it's certainly not a favorite past time of his to talk about them. Still, he doesn't interrupt even when the tingling of jealousy in his chest. "And I'm sure I was in love, at the time. But with you, it was… all consuming. Constant. It never really went away. Ever. And with the others it never felt like they were a part of me. Like my love for them was a piece of me."
Harvey can't believe the soaring level of pride that engulfs his chest, replacing his feelings of jealousy and making his love for his best friend somehow grow even more, which he didn't think was even possible.
Knowing he was responsible for even half an ounce of the love he feels for her, that she loves him back, makes it all the more stronger for him.
God, he's in love with her.
He says that out loud. She shifts slightly, putting enough space between them shes looking at him. Her eyes sparkle in a way they haven't yet, which is shocking considering they've both said it before. They insinuated it so many times over the years, and just a few days ago, the night he finally made love to her.
Still, he gets the feeling when she says it back. "I love you too." She smiles sweetly at him, bringing her hands around his neck, gazing at him for a moment longer, basking in their newfound reality that's familiar yet different in all the best ways. Harvey feels himself clamp up slightly, overwhelmed at everything and Donna nudges her chin before kissing him, keeping him on steady ground instead of letting him, either of them, spiral.
She hums into the kiss, and Harvey feels the the same inkling of contentedness consume him once more, as she settles back into his arms, head lying on his shoulder.
Donna's inquisition is clearly over for the night, snuggling into him as she slowly falls asleep to the rhythm of his breathing.
Harvey stays up for a few minutes longer, enjoying the feeling of safeness he has with her in his arms.
Yeah, he's in love.
