Two weeks went by and the relationship between the two women didn't improved. The opposite happened, they barely talked to each other. They barely talked at all.
Arizona thought Callie was annoying, asked too many questions and could not really be quiet for more than an hour. Also, Callie kept forgetting Arizona's name. She would often call her 'blondie' or 'roller skater girl'. After Callie discovered Arizona's choice of shoes, the blonde annoyed her even more.
To Callie, Arizona was acting like a first grader. Why would people actually make these shoes for grown ups? She asked herself this question since quite a few days already. Without an answer tho. She thought the blonde was a self centered, childish annoying Person with the biggest branch in her ass then anyone could ever have. And the worst? Her mood swings! Allthough, thinking about it, Callie wouldn't call it 'mood swings', rather something like coffee monster (or something like that). The latina quickly discovered that the blonde was after every surgery in deep need of a coffee. When she freshly got her coffee it was the safest time for Callie to talk.
Just a few days prior, Callie had at the moment met with Dr. Taylor for lunch, Arizona didn't seemed happy at all. When the blonde came out of another surgery the office looked horrible. Callie's desk was full of paper sheets, her little coffee table in front of the sofa was too. And Callie was no where in sight.
When Callie had entered the office again, the papers were sorted on the coffee table. They may were sorted correctly but it meant that her work partner just went through the latina's paperwork. Not every paper was meant for the blonde to see. Callie wanted to yell at the blonde. But when she found her she sat crying in an on call room, telling her to get the crap out of there.
They didn't talked about any of what had happened before. Not the clean desk, nor the crying in in call rooms.
Callie took a deep breath as she was about to enter the hospital, with the knowledge that the blonde would already sit on her chair, wear headphones and would ignore her until Callie did something 'stupid again'.
However, when she walked through the door to the office, the blondes seat was empty. It wasn't unusual, sometimes she was doing rounds but today there wasn't any coffee standing on the table. Weird. A coffee usually always was placed on the table, why wasn't it today?
Callie didn't though much about it.
Two hours went by and the blonde was nowhere in sight. But Callie couldn't care less.
Meanwhile Arizona ran from the building that was only a few block away from her own towards her apartment building. When she woke up that morning she was in an unknown bed, with a naked woman laying next to her. She quickly got up and dressed herself in the clothes from the night before. It was already 10 am, she should've been at work since three hours.
When Arizona was done with her shower she quickly got herself ready and left for work.
The blonde was annoyed at herself for being late again. She knew she wasn't gonna be in trouble, considering she stayed at the hospital more then she should.
Arizona ordered herself one of those coffee's from the little coffee stand in front of the building, that tasted like seasoned water with black food coloring.
The blonde tried to save time by running up the stairs. Taking the stairs was always gonna be faster then taking the elevator and risking to stop at every floor.
This plan didn't worked out tho. She oversaw a step and crashed with a loud noice on the stairs.
After standing up she realized how her coffee was spilled all over her. "Crap!" She muttered angrily under her breath. She was drenched in coffee. Her body ached and if she could she'd just go home again. But she couldn't do that. Arizona had patients to attend to, a research (and a partner for that) that wouldn't do everything alone and lots of paperwork that would get done by it self.
As she wanted to continue walking she noticed how two of her wheels were broken. This day started shitty already, what was coming next?
She took the wheels in her hand and covered the huge coffee spot on her shirt up with her purse.
As she entered her office, Callie looked up at her. "Hey, you here as well?" The latina joked. Seeing the empty cup of coffee in Arizona's hand, Callie thought she could joke around. But when Arizona didn't even blinked at her she knew the blonde hadn't found it half as funny.
"What happened?" Callie asked, stopping with her laughter. Arizona, keeping the seriously annoyed look on her face, moved the purse, revealing the coffee spot. "I fell up the stairs." Came coldly as a response. Callie tried to contain her smile. But as Arizona slammed her wheels on the table, Callie couldn't help it. "And I broke my shoes." The blonde added annoyed. "That's not funny!" The blonde declared as Callie's giggles calmed down.
"Wow, somebody's pretty cranky today!" The latina said, regretting it as soon as it left her mouth.
"Somebody needs to shut up!" Arizona snapped back. She took off her shoes put on her substitutes.
At least Arizona knew she had always a set of change in her office. Actually it was meant for the case that she was puked on or if anything else happened. The blonde could only hope not getting anything on her shirt today.
She turned backwards to the latina while pulling her shirt over her head. Not caring if the latina looked at her or not, she needed for the sticky material of her coffee drenched pullover to be away from her skin.
"I'll get it washed and do rounds afterwards." Arizona told Callie. "Oh, before I forget, Dr. Taylor texted me, she wants to invite you to sit at lunch with her in the cafeteria." Arizona added.
"Why aren't you with them at lunch?" Callie asked, noticing the blonde didn't counted herself with them.
"I don't eat lunch here. Way too time consuming." Was a short response. And with that Arizona stepped out of the door completely and shut it.
A few hours later and the blonde was performing CPR at a little girl while being rolled into an OR. The girl was just 5 years old. Arizona had treated her since around one and a half. Layla, the little girl, had a ventricular septal defect. Which, with other words, was also called a whole in her heart. Layla's mother noticed her strange behavior and automatically rushed her to the hospital. Just a few minutes in the hospital, Layla crashed.
Now they were waiting for their cardio surgeon to get done scrubbing in.
It wasn't too long after, probably only around ten seconds, that he was there. For Arizona time stood still. Her patient was only five years old. She still believed in Santa Clause and the tooth fairy. This little girl still loved to play pretend, dressed up with her siblings and lived an (almost) careless life.
Well. Almost.
Dr. Lee got her heart under control again. It was beating. They kept operating, to cure the little girl from her disease.
As the surgeons were about to close up, Layla crashed again. Both, Zhang and Arizona started to perform CPR. Arizona had started the machine to save the girl.
The girl was again almost done with surgery.
"Time of death, 1:32 pm" Arizona whispered as she stepped away from the lifeless body. She took a deep breath, feeling a tear roll down her cheek.
The blonde slowly made her way to the scrub room. She didn't knew how, her body felt frozen, she didn't noticed anything until Dr. Lee put his hand on her shoulder. "It's not our fault, Robbins. Layla was seriously sick, it was a matter of time." He said and kissed her head on top of her scrub cap. "I know." She whispered.
Walking into her office, Arizona made her way to her sofa. She didn't cared about Callie being in the office. The blonde walked in and let herself fall with a deep breath on her sofa. For a moment all she needed was peace.
"I hope you don't mind but I repaired your shoes." Came a quiet voice from another corner of the office. Arizona opened her eyes as she supported herself on her elbows. "Really?" The blonde smiled. Not a Robbins - dimple - smile, but at least an honest one. Callie held up the wheelies to show it to Arizona. "Wha- I mean- How?" Arizona asked, being too stunt to speak. She tried fixing them so many times (and had to replace so many pairs because something broke). But always ended up unsuccessfully.
"It wasn't that hard, just had to replace some screws." The latina said, shrugging with her shoulders as if it was the easiest thing in the world.
That was something her mother had taught her. Always be happy, help other ones and never be mad at someone who has had a bad day. All they may could need would be a friendly gesture and it could lightning up their day.
Callie could barely finish her statement when she felt the blonde throwing her arms around her, hugging the latina. "Thank you!" Whispered the blonde. Callie soon appreciated the hug and hugged her lab partner back. "You're really welcome." She said. "Dr. Taylor told me about your surgery, I'm sorry." The brunette continued, still hugging the blonde. Callie felt how Arizona's arms thighed around her, changing the hug from happiness about the shoes to a comfort hug.
They stood like that in comfortable silence until Arizona slowly stepped away. She looked up to the taller woman and smiled. This time a Robbins - dimple - smile. Her hands were on Callie's shoulder. "Thank you again for the shoes. And thank you for caring about the surgery." Arizona said, looking in deep brown orbs. Brown orbs met blue ones, and for the first time Callie noticed how pretty Arizona actually was.
Of course, Callie knew from the first second that she saw the blonde that she was attractive, but now, having a closer look on her face, blonde waves in a low ponytail, and deep ocean blue eyes, she saw it even more.
The latina just smiled at Arizona untill the shorter woman looked down smiling. They stood in each other's personal spaces, for once finding comfort by the other person. "I should do the paperwork now." Arizona whispered, barely trusting her own voice. She had definitely felt something (and knew that the spark between the two of them was real), but she couldn't allow herself to do anything, to feel anything.
"Sure" Callie shortly answered, suddenly feeling disappointed.
They stepped away from each other, making their way to their desks to continue working.
Around two hours after their little moment (if you could call it like that), Arizona's phone made it self known, letting her know someone was calling her. "Excuse me." She said before she pressed the green button to take the call.
"Hey, hitting Fox's tonight?" One of Arizona's best friends, Olivia, asked.
"Sure, text me details?" Arizona agreed, happy to get some diversion.
Later that night, Arizona got herself ready. Olivia had texted her that they would meet around 8 at their usual table.
The two women used to do this on a regular basis, going to a bar with each other but leaving separated with a stranger. That stopped when Olivia had met her (by now ex) boyfriend. Arizona wouldn't go as often, rather visiting Lily and her family. But when Olivia had found out that Ryle (her ex boyfriend) had cheated on her she had broken up with him.
Ever since they started going out more together again like they used to do.
Arizona had a quick shower, getting all the sweat from today away. After, she had put on a red mini dress with a deep cleavage. Her hair was open and straightened out. Yes, today she just wanted to let go.
Like planned, Arizona met Olivia at their usual table, Olivia already having ordered wine for them. "Wow, you look hot! Planning on not going home alone tonight, aren't you?" Arizona shot her friend just a knowing smirk.
Olivia was her best friend, next to Lily of course. She had roots from Africa which made her skin have a perfect brown ish tone. Her curly hair, something Olivia wasn't insecure about, was something Arizona always envied on her. Mostly, Olivia was the complete opposite of Arizona. In both, her looks and their personalities.
While Olivia was rather out going (you could call her an extrovert if you wanted to), Arizona wasn't like that. Olivia would often just go sit next to a random person and talk to them. In fact, that was how the women had met. Arizona was head person, always did what sounded more rational to her, while Olivia listened to her stomach.
Like already said, two women, different like day and night. Some people couldn't imagine having someone of the total opposite of themselves as best friend, but Arizona nor Olivia could be bothered about it.
While Olivia was straight, she would also hear to Arizona's stories about the women she had met. Sometimes, Olivia would also ask for the rather 'deeper secrets' as they called it. Arizona would tell her everything. Obviously, Arizona had no problem with listening to Olivia's boy stories.
The two best friends drunk their wine and afterwards decided to get the harder stuff. They got themselves shots and soon were joined by some people. Some of them were strangers but Arizona didn't mind, neither did Olivia.
One woman named Emma couldn't seem to get enough from Arizona. But nor could Arizona. They kept making flirty comments and let their hands travel up each other's thighs.
"Wanna get more drinks?" Emma asked, pressing her front more then needed onto Arizona's back. "Yes please!" Arizona said, turning around to start walking. They held each other close, letting their hands brush together without minding.
"Hey, we need more shots!" Arizona told the barkeeper. The man just nodded before asking how much they would need.
"Give us ten, that should be good!" Emma said before coming closer to Arizona's ear. "I can't wait to get you home." She said, making sure it was loud enough for the blonde to hear but not loud enough to hear for someone else. To say Arizona was aroused was an understatement. Just as Emma wanted to leave a trail of wet kisses down Arizona's neck the bartender put the shots in front of them.
The women quickly made their shots back to their friends.
As Callie entered the bar, a smell mixed out of sweat and alcohol filled her nostrils. Yes, that was definitely what she had needed after a day like she had.
Thinking to start slowly, Callie went to the bar, ordering herself a beer. The latina glanced around in the bar, looking for some familiar faces. Five men were in a corner, playing darts while drinking what looked like beer and eating peanuts. In a little bit darker corner was some sort of bachelorette party. The women seemed to have fun, all of them were dressed in an aweful shade of pink and had a plastic crown sitting on their head.
Then there were what seemed like another friend group just casually having a night out together. She noticed how a brunette that sat next to a blonde, kept touching her. The blonde seemed to enjoy it, not being able to hold her hands to herself either. The brunette whispered something in the blondes ear, making her nod immediately. Once again, the brunette kissed up and down the neck of the blonde. Wow, Callie thought, they do need a room.
The brunette stood up, taking the blondes hand in her own and they quickly run into the other side of the bar, towards the bathrooms but also the back exit. Callie couldn't care less where they were going. They looked like horny teenagers, running away to go make out with their highschool sweetheart.
Callie refocused on her drinks, feeling the wish of her friends from Seattle to be here.
The brown eyed recognized some faces from the hospital, some nurses, some doctors.
"Take me to yours!" The brunette moaned as she came down from her high Arizona just gave her.
The blonde took her hand and pulled her behind herself out of the little bathroom stall. Emma followed her, running as fast as she can in her drunken state. They exited the brown door which connected the bar to the bathroom.
As they ran through the bar, Arizona's blue eyes met with dark brown ones. She knew those eyes, knew who they belonged to. The blonde saw them everyday at work, in her break, she even caught them watching her perform surgery once. But never had she seen them in this bar.
If it wasn't for Emma that pushed her out of the bar, Arizona would've been frozen on the spot. Like a walk of shame, the blonde let herself be pushed out of Fox's.
For some reason, knowing Callie saw her, running out of the bar about to have a hook up made Arizona feel really uncomfortable. It wasn't like Callie was her boss or anything, but her work partner.
Arizona would have to come to work the next morning, probably having Callie a knowing smirk on her lips.
Maybe she could lie and say she didn't remembered anything from this night, didn't remembered hooking up with Emma.
Arizona was an almost always private person. She didn't needed for Callie to know anything about her life. About her private life.
It was called private life for reason. Because it's private, not meant to be known by everyone. But in the end, Arizona was aware of the fact that it was her own fault. If she felt like hooking up with a stranger from a bar, she had to be okay with the fact that people would see (and maybe even judge her) running out with another woman.
So why would it be any different with Callie? The latina had to at least accept Arizona the way she was. They didn't needed to be best friends, but for the sake of the research they needed to get along.
Easy or not.
They just had to.
AN: I hope u liked this chapter! btw I took inspiration by Lily's looks by the new Wednesday series.
