"Hello, my name is Dr. Arizona Robbins." Her palms were sweaty. "It's nice meeting you, just not under the circumstances." Brown eyes were watching her every move. "Please have a seat." She said as she was done shaking hands with Aria and her husband. The three sat down, being closely watched by another pair of brown eyes. "Dr. Warlington mailed the scans, tests and ultrasounds already to me a few days ago but I'd like to order new ones if you're up to it. I would also appreciate if you would stay here during your pregnancy so I can deliver the baby and check up on it as soon as it's out." Arizona said with a straight face.
Aria nodded all along. She appreciated the doctors concern. "I'm up to everything. As long as my little baby is healthy." Placing her right hand on her bump and the left hand on the hand of her husband. With a firm squeeze Javier, Arias husband, let her know that she isn't alone in this.
"Mr. Rodriguez, you can either wait here in the office or walk around the hospital. I'll have someone take you the fetal ward." Arizona said after she had explained the following few months to her patient. They had signed everything that was needed and we're now ready to start with everything.
It wasn't too long after that an intern came to get Aria. "I know that face and I don't like that face." Callie said as she sat opposite from Arizona. Javier went out for a walk, leaving the two women alone.
"The scans are concerning. Comparing the scans from four weeks ago with the scans from two weeks ago. If the scans they take at the moment are worse than the last ones then I need to do an emergency surgery. They need to have a certain value. But I'd like to keep it inside as long as possible. Obviously." Arizona explained, throwing her upper body against her chair. She covered her eyes with her hands, aware of the staring latina in front of her.
"Would you need to do this thingy you've been practicing with those eggs?" Callie asked, making the blonde woman laugh a little.
"Yes it's almost the same procedure."
The day after Arias phonecall, Callie found Arizona sitting in the middle of the room. A plate with a raw cracked egg was placed in front of her and she kept sucking out the egg yolk without it popping. Afterwards she had pushed it back in, mixed with a little bit of blue food coloring to see if the egg would leak somewhere.
They had used the eggs for lunch making scrambled eggs in the attendings lounge. Their tongues were stained blue for another day, which both of them just shrugged off. Arizona even made fun of them, saying they were real life smurfs in human form. Her own joke had made her giggle. She had earned a slightly annoyed glare from her latina coworker, tried to stifle it, but as soon as she looked at Callie she couldn't help but fall into another fit of laughter.
Callie on the other hand had tried to contain her laughter. The joke alone wasn't funny at all, but watching her giggle, tears almost coming out of Arizonas eyes and her tongue stained blue were too much to handle.
Arizona was a grown woman. But sometimes Callie wondered if by any chance a nine year old was just stuck in a body of a thirty-two year old.
"Do you know the gender of the baby?" Curiosity got the best out of Callie in that moment. Arizona lifted her arm that was placed above her eyes.
"If I take a closer look at the ultrasounds I guess I'd be able to tell." Shrugging it off again and placing her arm the way it was just moments ago again.
Callie nodded, aware that Arizona couldn't see her. "And would you tell it to me?" She continued asking.
"You can't see the gender yourself?" Replied Arizona questioning. "It's simple mathematics. You take the angle of the bla-"
"Can't do it. Could you please just?" Callie begged the blonde.
"I can't. You work here too. Unless I don't have the order from your sister I can't tell you anything." Arizona replied, this time not actually lifting her arms. She was aware of the annoyed look she must be getting from the latina right now, seeing as she didn't get an answer.
After around thirty seconds, Callie asked again. "But I'm her emergency contact."
"Yeah, still not. It's a) not an emergency and b) why don't you ask your sister if you can know the gender?"
"It's Aria, she'd never agree to me knowing the gender of her baby before she does."
That made Arizona look up, let a small chuckle out and shake her head. "Totally understand her tho. If was pregnant I'd want to know the gender first myself too. Hell, I'd probably do the ultrasound myself, so I'd truly be the first to know."
"Controlfreak much?" Callie joked around.
"So? What if I am?"
Right as Callie was about to reply, there was a knock on their office door and an intern following quickly. "Dr. Robbins, the test results from your patient is back." He said. Arizona nodded, thanked him and then politely signaled him to leave the room.
"Are those Aria's?"
Arizona opened the scans while nodding her head, confirming that those were indeed Aria's.
Callie watched as Arizona looked at them. Her nose crinkled, her lip being bitten by white teeth. "Huh..."
"What is it?"
"It's..." Standing up, still reading the inside of the scans, the blonde made her way to the door.
She walked into Aria's room, leaving Callie behind. "Hey Mrs. Rodriguez. I just got your scans back. They don't look perfect but it's better then I thought it'd be. Still, I'd like to keep you here, monitore you, to make sure everything is how it's supposed to be."
Aria smiled at her blonde doctor. "Thank you so much Dr. Robbins. And please, call me Aria."
"I will." Arizona smiled. "Next rounds are at 8 pm today, so I'll see you later. Get some rest and if anything happens tell a nurse to page me." And with that Arizona was out of the door.
Meanwhile, Callie had received a call from her dad, asking her about the whereabouts of her sister. Callie and Carlos, her dad, had never shared a good bond. They called on Christmas, on birthdays, exchanged their wishes and hung up.
"She's being treated at the hospital I work at..."
"No, not in Seattle..."
"Uhm her doctor is one of the best..."
"She is the best."
"Yeah I do..."
"Why don't you call Aria yourself? She is capable of talking herself." And with that the judging from her father continued about how of a terrible, bad sister she is, to tell her dad to 'bothter' Aria when Callie was around. In the end (in her father's opinion) she sat in an office all day, drinking coffee and sometimes, when needed, went around the hospital, visiting her patients. 'You should've become a lawyer instead!' That was the sentence she always heard from her father. 'When your mother was your age, she was already married to me, you're not getting any younger!' another one of his judgement.
Another thing Carlos always tried was to set her up with another businesses man. He would talk about how perfect it'd be for him and his business if Callie would finally marry a wealthy man, cut the surgeon crap and get her life together.
But that clearly wasn't what Callie wanted. She didn't wanted to be set up with strangers, especially men, she didn't wanted to 'cut the surgeon crap' and become a lawyer, because she truly loved her job.
The latina didn't sat in her office all day, drinking coffee. No. She made bones out of scratch, saved lifes on a daily basis, made famous sport VIPs walk again, or make them play their sport again. She casted little kid's arms or legs when they fell from somewhere and helped amputees to get their perfect prosthetics.
What she did was badass. Way more badass than being a lawyer, or marrying a man she doesn't love.
How would she? That part of her was something barely someone knew about her. Mark knew. Meredith and Cristina knew. Joe knew. Aria and Ravier knew. That was about it. Her father however didn't. And it was something she probably would never tell him.
Why would she? To give him one more reason to hate her? To prefer Aria over Callie? Fuck no!
"Sí papá. Escucha, tengo que colgar..."
Arizona entered the door, only hearing Callie talk Spanish in a tone the blonde knew all too well. It was her 'dont get on my nerves now tone' and usually it was used against Arizona.
"Mi compañero de trabajo Acabo de entrar a la oficina..."
"No, ¿de dónde se supone que debo saber eso?..."
"Adiós papá."
And with that the latina hung up. Arizona sat on her desk. The blonde watched as the woman on the other side of the room closed her eyes in annoyance, maybe even in sadness.
Brown eyes snapped open, aware that they were being watched. "What?" Callie snapped at Arizona. Snapping towards her wasn't right at the moment, she knew that, but all the crap her father was giving her was just too much.
Arizona looked at her for a few seconds before shaking her head slightly. "Nothing."
Callie looked back down towards her paperwork, soon feeling blue eyes lingering on her again.
Arizona couldn't imagine what just happened to get Callie from her good mood to this annoyed 'look at me and I'll kill you' person.
"Robbins, what is it?" Her eyes were filled with nothing but rage and anger and maybe even a little hurt.
"I will only ask what happened if you want me to. If you need me to not talk about..." Arizona motioned with her hands between Callie and her phone that was laying right next to the latina. "Whatever this is about, then that's okay. But I will not let you treat me like I just made a huge mistake." Arizona made sure to use as much authority in her voice as she could.
Callie looked at her, not angry at her work partner at all. She wasn't able to respond at the moment, knowing she'd start a fight. Instead she pulled the little rubber on her wrist, letting it snap as a mechanism of letting her anger out as much as she could.
The latina was aware that Arizona didn't knew the breathing techniques that her therapist had teached her, or the rubber band technique to calm down her nerves. Taking three deep breaths, Callie looked up again, finding blue, awaiting eyes. Her therapist had told her to try and be calm and explain to others the way she sees things.
"It was a private call. Nothing work related." She felt bad about the way she treated Arizona right now but couldn't help it.
But the blonde wasn't dumb. If it wasn't something work related, and spoken with rapid spanish, it had to do something with Callie's sister Aria. "Was it about Aria? You sounded really annoyed." The blonde spoke quietly, trying to sound comforting. As she saw the annoyed, mad look on Callie's face she automatically stopped talking. If the latina needed space right now, Arizona wouldn't stop her. She took one last glance at Callie before continuing her reading she had started earlier.
Two days have passed since Callie got the call from her father. She wasn't quite sure if she was supposed to tell Aria about it, or maybe Arizona. She also could've called her therapist. But instead of talking to someone - anyone - about it she kept it to herself. Callie honestly was happy that Arizona hadn't continued asking her about the phone call. Instead the blonde had let it be.
And ever since she was quiet. They had a brief talk the day before, Arizona telling Callie to save herself a Christmas vacation so she didn't spend Christmas at the hospital. It wasn't Christmas for another five months, but according to Arizona it was important to save them early enough. So she did that. She took a few days before Christmas off until a few days after new years eve.
But right now, Callie was still pissed at the call. And it was obvious. Arizona had thought about confronting her but quickly let that idea slide. She didn't wanted to cause any trouble but neither did she felt like to bear with Callie's mood.
Her decision was made when she placed the latinas usual coffee order in front of her and received a grumpy "since when do you bring me coffee.?"
Arizona took the coffee from the table. "I'm done with your attitude! You're coming with me right now. You're grumpy and mad and annoyed due to a phone call? Okay, fine! But seriously, move your ass out of this door right now, I'll show you where you can let out all your anger!"
Callie just grumpily looked into angry blue eyes. Probably for the first time she noticed that they aren't 'just blue'. They had the color of the ocean. If Callie wouldn't know it better she'd say it's photoshopped.
A nod from Arizona pulled her out. She pointed at the door, her eyes saying 'move it'.
Callie stood up, already a little less grumpy than before. She stopped right in front of Arizona, leaving barely any space between them.
Her heart started to flutter, missing a beat or two. But she couldn't let it affect her. "Can I get my coffee back at least?"
Arizona looked into those deep brown orbs, trying to decide what to answer. But Callie standing that close to her has her brain not working. She put on a little smirk, bit down on her bottom lip before she leaned in a little, whispering in the latinas ear. "Not until you sit in my car." And with that she left Callie standing in the office while she made her way to the car.
Callie stood there speechless. The way ocean blue eyes had darkened a shade or two in just seconds amazed her but turned her on too. She stopped her thoughts right about there. Why did it turn her on? Mark was right, she did need to get laid. Soon.
But now she needed her coffee back. And the only way to get it back was to-
When she reached the blondes car, Arizona already sat inside, Callie's coffee standing in the cup holder, next to a smaller cup. The baby blue BMW was parked right in front of the entrance, the passenger seat door already opened, waiting for Callie to step inside. She let out a deep breath before actually climbing in. On the backseats were color books and pencils. A pack of gum and some lighters were in the center console. "Where are you taking me?" Curiosity got the best out of her as Arizona started driving.
"You'll see." Was the only response she got.
Not happy at all with the response, Callie took her, by now, cold coffee out if the cup holder.
They stayed in silence for about thirty minutes, Arizona sometimes trying to sing to a few lyrics she knew. Callie thought it was ridiculous. Maybe because the blonde didn't hit any tone or maybe because she changed the lyrics up.
They drove to a place Callie had never seen before. It was a hill that led into a forest. A bench stood on the edge of the hill. "This technique is something that I used to do a lot when I was angry, sad, or mad at someone or something. I would drive to a nearby quiet place to get all of my emotions out. I'll step outside to let you alone. Set a timer for ten minutes. In those ten minutes you can scream, cry, yell,... Whatever. Just please don't break my car. When the timer is over you'll have a minute or two to calm yourself down. I won't ask any questions. You can talk to me but I'm not about to pressure you into telling me something you're not comfortable with." Arizona spoke slowly and calm, making sure that Callie understood everything she said. When Callie nodded agreeing, Arizona opened the door to step out. "You see that bench over there? I'll sit there and wait for you. Just call me over when you need me or when you want to get some fresh air." Again, Callie only nodded.
Arizona gave her a symphatic smile before exiting the car, walking the ten meters to the bench and slowly sitting down.
Callie took a deep breath. Why would Arizona be so nice to her?
Meanwhile outside, Arizona had received a call from Lily, asking her about her researches with Callie. "We did discover something tiny, which we don't know yet if it's relevant. But we need to find a time to just sit together and go over all of our notes. My guess to start with the lab would be in three to four months."
"So around Christmas?" Dr. Taylor asked. "I need to report every little detail. Our sponsors didn't invest their money to have no outcome." She continued.
"Okay, I'll start journaling everything and will Dr. Torres do the same." She knew she could get Lily to be happy with this.
"Alright. And by the way, I received a call today. Medical International wants to have an interview with you. They wanna take pictures and ask you questions about your latest article."
Arizona knew this would be happening Sommer or later. She took a deep breath before answering. "No, I don't do interviews or pictures. I wrote this article anonymous for a reason. How did they even got my name?"
"I don't know but you'll have to decide soon of what to do. And before you decline, please take a little while to think about it."
"I will." It took Arizona a couple of seconds to respond. "Look, I've gotta go. Talk to ya soon." And with that she hung up.
