"So you finally asked him," Mei grabbed another snack, slowly unwrapping it along the edge; she liked to open them without breaking its shell entirely.
"Yes", MK's answer came with the same monotone he used to answer when his mind was busy with something else, to be precise with the umpteenth videogame bought by his friend to distract him from what was bothering his thoughts during those weeks.
"What did he answer you?"
"Nothing. He just went away without sayin anything"
"What an asshole", the girl didn't bother to hide what she felt; as glad as she was that MK had become the Monkie Kid and happily supported him in all his reckless battles against Red Son and DBK, she couldn't stand the way Monkey King had treated him from the beginning. He had dropped all the responsibilities of his powers on his shoulders, as if he weren't an integral part of it, and then agreed to train him almost reluctantly, as if he was doing him a favor and it wasn't his duty to prepare him to face the same demons from his past come back to take revenge, like DBK and PIF. And now they discovered that he enjoyed doing who knows what in a brothel and she didn't even want to give him a shred of explanation.
"Mei please", MK let go of the joystick to be able to give undivided attention to his best friend, "It's his private life, he doesn't owe me anything".
"He owes you a good example and being a bitch doesn't help"
"Mei!"
"Come on, tell me I'm wrong!", she waved the half-eaten snack in front of his face as if to attract his attention, "I'm not saying that he shouldn't have fun like all normal people, but at least seeing you upset he should try to reassure you, to tell you not to worry about him… well tell you something! Anything! He can't just ignore you and refuse to see you for days!"
MK would have liked to answer her, defend his mentor from those accusations ... but in his heart he knew that Mei was right.
The way Monkey King was treating him wasn't fair at all. It was true that he had no right to intrude on his personal affairs, but a little explanation, as mentor to pupil, he believed to be deserved.
He sighed in defeat, returning to the game without really concentrating, still looking for a way to distract himself from thoughts of him.
Mei watched him for a few seconds before deciding to approach him and hug him from behind. "MK I'm sorry ok? I just want to find a way to make you understand that it's not right for him to disrespect you like that", she whispered after a while, placing a small kiss on his temple; MK welcomed that demonstration of affection with a small moan, relaxing in her embrace. "I know Mei, and I'll see about broaching the subject with him when things have calmed down a bit. I promise."
They stayed like this for a few minutes, one in the other's arms, each busy with his own electronic gadget (MK with the video game and Mei with her cell phone), until it was the girl who broke the silence.
"Wanna go see what Red Son is up to?"
"Let's go".
